Douglas Trumbull, the special effects supervisor for Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, is working on a new documentary, and it will have a dizzying amount of never-before-seen material.

In this era of behind-the-scenes documentaries on every DVD, it's easy to summon a "so what" at the prospect of yet another one. But there are few films as influential as Kubrick's 2001, which was produced back in 1968, before the behind-the-scenes documentary became par for the course. As such, there has been much written about the making of the masterpiece, but little seen.

Now, in collaboration with archivist David Larson, Trumbull is aiming to rectify that with 2001: Behind the Infinite -- The Making of a Masterpiece. The two have secured unprecedented access to Kubrick's archives, where they've found a treasure trove of impeccably preserved images of the production itself, as well as set photography and design schematics.

They also arranged more than 40 new interviews with the surviving players -- including stars Kier Dullea and Gary Lockwood -- and will be using some of that archival photography as CG background plates in a fashion that'll allow the interviewees to "interact" with the past.

Behind the Infinite sounds like a mammoth undertaking -- one that befits the first science fiction film to endure as a work of art.

Seriously looking forward to this, but show-don't-tell, guys.  What a boring intro to something that could be really great to see.
