After having put a script on BlackList I started thinking about what other stuff I could try to write to see how I could expand my horizons.  It reminded me how masters tend to like to tackle all genres.  But what does that mean?  There are so many subgenres that it's impossible to touch them all.  So I started to put together a list of genres and subgenres and then categorize what PTA has hit and what he might hit next.

https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/guide-to-basic-film-genres/

Action - War, Military, Spy, Espionage, Martial Arts, Western, Shoot 'em Up
Comedy - Slapstick, Screwball, Parody, Black
Drama
Fantasy
Horror - Zombie, Folk, Body, Found Footage
Mystery
Romance - Historical, Romance, Romcom, Chick Flick, Paranormal
Thriller - Crime, Disaster, Psychological, Techno, Conspiracy, Legal, Spy, Supernatural
Western - Classic, Revisionist, Anti, Contemporary, Neo, Fantasy, Space, Modern, Spaghetti
Sci-Fi - Space, Time, Cerebral Science, Robot, Monster, Disaster, Alien

Hard Eight - Crime Drama
Boogie Nights - Mockumentary, Crime, Drama, Period
Magnolia - Drama
Punch-Drunk Love - Romcom, Thriller
There Will Be Blood - Epic, Western, Gothic, Horror, Period
The Master - Drama, War, Psychological, Period
Inherent Vice - Detective, Mystery, Conspiracy, Period
Phantom Thread - Romance, Period, Psychological
Licorice Pizza - Coming of Age, Romance, Screwball, Period

What genres would you all like to see?  What's likely next is a Jazz Musical, but that's just speculation.

Any feedback into genres I'm missing and categorizations of PTA's films I'm missing are welcome.  Personally I'd like to see him do something ridiculous like The Big Lebowski.  Or maybe a sci-fi film would be fun (although yeah, we get that Lena was an alien).

Montclair

PDL isn't a thriller, TWBB isn't gothic/horror and LP isn't screwball. Anyway, I'd like to see him direct a black comedy. One that's a period piece, like "Kind Hearts and Coronets."

Axolotl

TWBB isn't an epic, Inherent Vice isn't a detective, Phantom thread isn't a "psychological".

Anyway I'd like to see him direct a swashbuckler. One that's set in mediaeval europe like "The Flame and the Arrow".

Your attempt at a joke doesn't work because those movies actually are in the genres you listed. Pick yourself up and try again, except next time, try to actually be funny when you do it. Moron.

Oh no. That is devastating feedback coming from the funniest poster on this website.

I laughed so the joke did work

Yes

Slapstick comedy or parody.

Remember that offhand remark he made before about wanting to do some Anchorman-esque comedy about a Cleveland cable news team or something? Inspired by his dad. He said a "full-blown comedy"

Not huge on sci-fi personally and I don't think his interests apply there. I guess that jazz project whatever is truly next but we'll see. Getting Cotton Club vibes from it, whatever genre you'd call that

Sci-Fi in Space or a War Film - no specific period preference (due to the cost factor alone it 99% will never happen but let me dream)

Psychological/Supernatural Thriller - arthouse/cerebral/mind-bending approach, i believe it is in his territory of interests

Gangster Film - no specific period preference, i just think he could pull it off

Anything new from him will excite me. If I hear he's doing a sci-fi, a horror, a musical, a sports drama, anything, I'll be thrilled.

A sci-fi that's more rooted in reality would be right up my alley. When sci-fi's cross over to the realm of fantasy too much, they usually lose me.

Boring non-genre answers: I'd love to see him explore either the swingin', jivin' nightclub era when showy bandleaders were almost equal parts vaudevillian as they were musicians (a la Ricky Ricardo), or early sitcom production of the '50s & '60s. The '80s and '90s could be cool, too.

Stowaway cost 30m less than LP. Not an Sci-fi epic, but it's not impossible (sorry for giving you hope. :P)

Sitcom production film is what I'd want too. But your mentioning of a sports drama got me wide-eyed. He loves Bad News Bears, I could picture him doing something along those lines. Bring back Greg from LP, have like Joaquin or Sandler play the coach. Throw John C. Reilly a role

Jeremy Blackman

I'd like to see something in the fantasy genre like The Green Knight. Can you even imagine? And he doesn't have to worry about smartphones.

ono

He should do a LARP mockumentary of The Green Knight.  With smart phones.

I don't think the man is capable of making something truly in genre. It always turns out to be a singular PTA film that follows very little conventions, but boy would I love to see what the hell an action movie by PTA would look like.
