Wow, really nice work mod. I'm surprised by some of the films that made the 15.

Again, three K's, I'm so happy for The Shining and EWS.

Amazing presentation... I dont agree with all the results but I dont think they are very bad either.

The only one I dont think it belongs in the top 10 at all is Mulholand Dr.... but thats just me!

Good job everyone... and again very cool presentation!

But I mourn the loss of Dr. Strangelove.

mod, can you make up a #16 of the war room for me?  Just so I can see what it would have looked like?

Interesting list though.  Annie Hall above Taxi Driver... didn't see that coming.  And I thought Magnolia would have squeezed ahead of 2001.

Bizarre.  Eternal Sunshine is good but overrated.  Goodfellas and Apocalypse Now have no business on the list.  I'd say the same about Taxi Driver, 8 1/2, and Mulholland Drive, but that's part of Xixax, it seems.  Otherwise, I'm pleased with the list.  At first I raised an eyebrow at Boogie Nights, but the more I think about it, the more it fits.  And I can rest easy knowing that Spielberg was shunned, not to mention Lucas.  And at least there's no Vivre Sa Vie-esque surprise this year.  Nice to see Eyes Wide Shut get its due.  Too bad about The Big Lebowski, Amelie, and Persona (especially Persona).  Great work on the graphics, though.  :yabbse-thumbup:

If I could say anything about this list, it'd be that it's more "sophisticated" overall than the one of two years ago, and even though I disagree with some of the choices, as was expected, that's a good thing.

Looking forward to reading people's top 30 picks, whenever given the go-ahead.

Eyes Wide Shut at number three surprises me.

Eternal Sunshine is really the only one that absolutely doesn't belong on there (not that it's bad, it's just not top 15 material).  I think Apocolypse now is way overrated, but I understand people's love of it so I'm fine with it on the list.

Obviously, I'm pissed that Lebowski didn't make it, but I can deal with where it did make it (will you ever find out where on the list it ended up?  it's a secret... for now!!*)

*and possibly forever

The 3 Kubricks that were selected this time were his best ones, so I'm happy about that.  I am a little puzzled the ESotSM made it, great movie, but one of the 15 best of all time?

I can't complain much, though.  This list is much better than the last, although... there's only one non-English film, and I really doubt that the top 15 movies of all time were made in America.

Dissapointed with the absence of Its a Wonderful Life (I thought we had a chance) and a much broader age range of the films in general would have been nice. The only placements I strongly agree with are the Kubrick bookends, everything else is a jumble. Still its a fairly strong list and looks very cool, especially the 8&1/2 capture!

Although I love Eternal Sunshine and Boogie Nights, I don't think they're among the 15 best movies ever. Anyway, the presence of a Woody Allen movie made me cream my pants, so it's all right.

Films that lost its spot on this year deka:

Dr. Strangelove
A Clockwork
PDL
My life to live
400 blows
Seven samurai
Fight Club

Only Kubrick and PTA got their movies replaced, the others just didn't showed up, The 400 is truly the only one I miss.

New additions:

EWS - At number three can't really complain, as I was seeing the list was worried for a second that it didn't show.
Annie Hall - Nice Allen got some recognition
Goodfellas - Casino is better but I still love this flim
Boogie Nights - I completly agree with this one, after all, is the one flim that made greg start his pta site, in a way it brought us where we are now
Eternal Sunshine - Gondry is a master but it is out of place
Apocalypse Now - Too bad it wasn't The Godfather, that is a wonderful flim
The Shining - Looky here, where are the other better horror flims I wonder?  :finger:

Three directors have a total of 7 films on the list........

I should have remembered the distaste of last year's list before bellying for another one this year. Good showing on the process. Again XIXAX brings creativity to everything it does.

just a peek at the 1/2 switcharound is a hint at what a MASSIVE upgrade this is from the 04 deka. i'm quite pleased with these results, with the usual minor quibbles but i'm in a good mood right now so the mistakes don't even bother me that much.

all i'm gonna say is ANNIE HALL AND THE SHINING MADE THE LIST!   :-D

thanks, voters.

Adaptation should be replacing ESotSM
Casino is a bit better than Goodfellas, but they're pretty close
I still think that Boogie Nights is much better than Magnolia but that's just personal taste
Taxi Driver and EWS definitely deserve their spots
and it's nice to see The Shining made it.

too bad It's A Wonderful Life and The 400 Blows didn't make it (and The Life Aquatic and The Dreamers, but those are personal faves more than great films.)

Some quick thoughts.

*Sad that 400 Blows didn't make the list
> same goes for the lack of Bergman and Leone
*I wish Citizen Kane would be higher.
*Too much PTA & Kubrick (not that there is anything wrong with either of them)
*Eternal Sunshine is strange to have that high.
*Happy to see Annie Hall & Vertigo on there.

I'm a little surprised "Dancer in the Dark" and "Amelie" didn't make it on.  They both seemed to have the momentum.

But it looks like we've gotten better at this list thing, all in all.

Am I the only who's happy with Eternal Sunshine on the list? I think it's one of the best modern films, in terms of all of our modern elements, special effects, post modern storytelling, amazing acting, seriously....there are a million and a half reasons why this movie is great, despite the fact it's so popular.

I can't believe how pleased I am with this list, nothing is wrong with it. It reflects the zeitgeist of the board in so many ways. I'm just happy there's no Fight Club. Maybe it's just the way Mod presented it, the list seems so palatable. (absolutely fantastic images, btw Mod)

i'm very proud of the board right now.

great presenation, weak list.  i'll write more after 24.

one thought:  where is It's a wonderful life and 400 blows?

EDIT:

My first thoughts:  thank god there's no fight club.   i guess i have to revisit vertigo, cause it seems to get so much acclaim, i don't remember thinking it was that great (a four star movie, for sure).  the only kubrick choice i'm unsure about is the shining.  i prefer strangelove.  but then again, i haven't seen any kubrick since my favorite director was tarantino.   speaking of which, pulp fiction is WAYYY too high.  i mean i know we all love it, but that much?  the more and more i think about it, the more and more i almost like jackie brown just as much.    Magnolia should be that high.  Annie Hall -- yay!  The more and more i think about this movie the more and more i appreciate it.  earlier this month even i wouldn't have said it deserved a spot on the list, but what the hell.   just seeing the presentation for it makes me appreciate it so much more.  maybe i'm fickle, i just think my tastes are constantly evolving and maturing.   as for eternal -- come on.  citizen kane -- about right.   thank god there was none of the overrated godard crap.  but damn, no 400 blows?  how can you not love that movie?  wait, i just realized something, no wes anderson, right?  that's a relief.   another thing, is raging bull not on the list!?   i suppose the scorsese selections are good enough, but raging bull is still his best movie.    Stiill not sure if 8 1/2 is better than la dolce vita (la strada is still the best), but i'm still happy we have a fellini on there.

oh yeah, and i've never seen mullholand drive

in conclusion:  although i'm not too happy with the top 15, i've realized that i need to revisit kubrick's life works and see more david lynch.

Postscript -- way to overuse italics, JimmyGator

It's a fine list.  Sure it's weird to have Eternal Sunshine on there but I guess something had to represent the current decade.  Maybe it got a lesser quantity of votes but the votes it did get were weighted more.

Nice work on the images, modage.

I do like some Godard, but certainly not enough to put it on a top 15 list.  If we were just trying to compose a list of some of the most influential movies on there, then sure, godard could be on there.

It wasn't so much the dekapenticon as the xixax boards in general.  When I see people who have similar tastes to me (or should it be mine) raving about a director I really don't know too much about (while I have seen his most essential works), it kind of makes me think I need to get my shit into gear.

here's the thing. eternal sunshine is this beautiful movie full of hope and it ends very bittersweet. you can feel every little push and pull in this relationship of theirs, you learn about it all in reverse, secondhand, and it's still incredibly moving. Fight Club feels bratty and immature and hopeless for no reason. when you back up and say that a man with a mental disorder couldn't stop what he didn't mean to start, it lacks a humanity that eternal sunshine offers. if it boils down to the fact that fight club doesn't make me feel or think like ES, then that's ok, and if you like it that's fine.

anyhow, i'm glad fight club's not here because to me it definitely wouldn't fit. I have massive respect for ES, but not Fight Club. However, if perhaps Seven or The Game were here, that would be a very interesting choice. I just don't think Fincher has made one of the best movies of all time, whereas Gondry and Kauffman definitely have. It's the culmination of all this great talent.

All of Haneke's post 2000 work is far better and more important to cinema than anything that was in the running to make this list (from this decade). Too bad I didn't watch him sooner to make a push -- not that it would have made any difference.

So you who haven't yet: there's a year ahead of us, watch more Haneke and Godard and Tarkovsky and Bergman and Bresson and Bunuel. And if you don't like it... watch it again. You missed something.

And for what I would like to say, Magnolia dropping a spot is good.  I think it's going to be the La Dolce Vita of his catalogue, I think that in time and with viewings some of us aren't going to be able to help but find it overly melodramatic.  I think the lightness of Boogie Nights will carry it through, and I think that the beauty and imagination of Punch-Drunk will carry it through.  But, hell, La Dolce Vita sits the top of many lists, as will Magnolia I am sure.

Eyes Wide Shut at number three surprises me, but not in a matter of disdain, just a 'what the fuck, really that high' kind of way.  I share the regret in not having Dr. Strangelove crack the list.

Did anyone say Pulp Fiction deserves to be at number four?  It does, probably.  Or one or six or eleven or fifteen.  It deserves to be on the list somewhere, and the number may be negotiable by the year.

Annie Hall isn't my favorite Woody Allen drama or my favorite Woody Allen comedy.  But I guess that it's a bith of both will suffice.  I think perhaps maybe people have that nostalgic attachment to it, as it was probably their first Allen, or maybe they buy the hype, or maybe they just plain fucking love the movie.  Looking at his catalogue objectively I can't possibly consider it his best.

I'm pretty sure I voted for Taxi Driver to be at number one.  I think it's the ultimate seventies movies myself - it's Scorsese, Schrader, and De Niro coming together at a time in which they were all in their peak.  I don't know any other film that quite captures what it is to be anomic, faceless, and malcontent; certainly not with the beauty of cinema behind it as well.  Fucking Bernard Herrmann too, goddamn.  It's a bit 'poster in the frat house' but what's that got to do with me got to do with the film.

Honestly from the list I have the least experience with Mulholland Drive.  I'm going to watch it again soon.

I don't like Eternal Sunshine hardly at all.  I do think that Gamblour is making a fine case for the film.

Maybe some of these comments conflict each other and then the wizard reveals that it is indeed all taste.

Let me say it one more time:  next year Peckinpah please.

Also, it's cool this place holds Eyes Wide Shut in such high regard.  Almost everyone I talk to hates it with a passion.  Salut, Xixax!

yeah, i am talking about the monolith, and i'm sorry i missed it-- it just looks like a black photoshop rectangle with a soft glow behind it. i saw 2001 for the second time today (library's copy both times, which is kinda scratched up, but mostly in the beginning of the mission to jupiter scenes) and i didn't see anything that looked like that pic. i assumed it wasn't a cap.

furthermore, i fully admit that not using the word "monolith" was a very stupid mistake and makes me look like an idiot. the end.

I dig all of the movies on the list and everything.  But I must admit I'm a bit disappointed.  I just wish that there was more diversity (at least in directors represented) and the inclusion of a little sci-fi film from 1980, among others.

Not a bad compilation, I voted for...some of the movies up there. Just a miner complaint, I just want to throw this out there: The Shining. What's the deal with that? Such an awful, uninspired, well, just a plain yawn fest. The miniseries with the dude from "Wings" (No, not Thomas Hayden Church) was vastly superior in my humble opinion. It was a lot scarier. Like when the fireplace just turned on by itself. That really scared me. I still have nightmares about that. Oh, and for the record, 217 is a much better room number than 237. Just my feelings on the subject. Oh, and nothing with Stallone on that list. That upset me.

I like this list a lot. I wish I'd participated. . . . I'll agree with RK and (I think) some others that Eternal Sunshine seems most out of place, not that it's a bad film or anything. It's the quirky "flair" of the list, I suppose. So happy to see three outstanding Kubrick films on there (and 2001 at the top!) and ecstatic to see Vertigo, which I think is Hitchcock's best and is in my personal top 10 list of all time. . . .

Great showing in the selections, and gorgeous presentation, too!

I think it will be great if we can get an animated film on there one of these years. Maybe Spirited Away or Grave of the Fireflies...

An even greater longshot, I know, would be getting recognition for a documentary someday.

Fight Club needs to be on the list.  It's one of those films that just gets better with each viewing.  It's A Wonderful Life, Do The Right Thing, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Graduate ... pass.  They have no business there.  But still, I'm definitely interested and glad to see the "second fifteen" as it is.  I wonder where Fight Club and Amelie ended up.  Things sure have changed in two years, and it'll be interesting to see where they go in another year.

My list is below.  I'm not entirely happy with it.  There are too many films I've still yet to see, and too many films I don't think fit, but put on anyway in order to fill out the 30 that were at least somewhat meritorious.  Though I nominated Eternal Sunshine, I still think it's out of place in the Top 15.  It won't hold up, and its flaws and coldness will come through in the years to come.

21 Grams
Amelie [5]
American Beauty [6]
Annie Hall [4]
Before Sunrise
Boogie Nights
Big Lebowski, The [8]
Citizen Kane
Clockwork Orange, A
Dancer in the Dark
Dreamers, The
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Eyes Wide Shut [2]
Fight Club [7]
George Washington
Ghost World
Ice Storm, The
Magnolia [1]
My Dinner With Andre
My Own Private Idaho
Naked
Persona [3]
Pulp Fiction [9]
Punch-Drunk Love
Red (1994, Kieslowski)
Schizopolis
Sex and Lucia
Singin' in the Rain
Short Cuts [10]
Spirited Away

Though I nominated Eternal Sunshine, I still think it's out of place in the Top 15.  It won't hold up, and its flaws and coldness will come through in the years to come.

COLDNESS?!!?!??!

Seriously?

Yep.  I do greatly admire the film.  It's technically accomplished.  Very well done.  But it's cold, and that is its key problem.  I've watched it so many times, because at the time, it was the movie I was waiting for, the movie that seemed to be on the tip of everyone's tongues.  And that, in part, was what I think everyone loved about it.  But the more I thought about it, the more I realized Eternal Sunshine merely points to ideas that everyone has wanted to see expressed in a film for so long.  It doesn't capture them.  Everything seems synthetic, not organic, not natural.  And that results in that cold feeling where I know I'm supposed to feel something because all the elements and ingredients are there, but they don't quite add up.  This is where the direction fails.

I've read the screenplay a couple times, too.  Kaufman did a great job.  The thing starts out, "It's gray," and I think that first little direction is one of the most compelling and telling of all.  Maybe it might be a bit of a language barrier for Gondry, how he, in my opinion, was unable to fully, successfully translate the heart of Kaufman's vision to screen -- I don't know, I haven't seen Gondry's other flicks, so I doubt it.  I think it's more Gondry's technical prowess gets in the way of the emotion behind the material.  I think if Kaufman was able to direct this, we might have had an even more powerful film.  Something was lost in the translation.  The link is not there.  I keep on thinking of all these memorable scenes that I did love.  Hit after hit.  Clem and Joel under the covers.  Joel bashing the bird.  The regression to his childhood, and his (read: Kaufman's) fascination with a woman's crotch.  Kaufman hits on all these key, archetypal elements of relationships.  All these pointers, classic.  But they don't seem to be grounded in anything, and that's where the link fails.  I could go on, but it's been about a month since I've seen it.  Maybe move this to the actual thread.

i think most of your critisism didn't actually mean anything. for example, you say there was no link between the script and the movie, and then that the link fails because the pointers "[don't] seem to be grounded in anything."
Title: Re: The 2006 Xixax DEKAPENTICON
Post by: ono on February 10, 2006, 09:49:00 PM
"Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man."

You say my criticism didn't mean anything and then you go on to recap what it meant.  Heh.

I think I see the problem here.  Your last post seemed to believe it was pointing out a flaw in my logic, when really it points out a flaw in the film.

Quote from: picolasfor example, you say there was no link between the script and the movie, and then that the link fails because the pointers "[don't] seem to be grounded in anything."
no link = failure to establish a link.  Next paragraph yet again elaborates on why.

My criticism meant just what it said.  Kaufman and Gondry had ideas they wanted to express.  Kaufman got on it, wrote a killer script, but Gondry is a technical director first and foremost, and when it comes to emotion he's lacking, and so is the film.  If you'll go back and read the Eternal Sunshine thread, you'll find many people saying they were wowed technically, but it left them breathless but a little detached.  That's exactly the point here.  Gondry didn't have the chops to connect emotionally with the material, and that there is the missing link.  What we get here are, again, pointers to emotions, moments in relationships, rather than the actual heart that makes these moments so significant.  The material needed a more emotional director than Gondry is capable of being, and that's why I feel the film is overrated.  GT once made the criticism for a certain movie that the script is a blueprint for a better movie than the one that was actually made.  That's a perfect criticism for this one here.

i gave an example of what i thought was meaningless and i didn't explain what it meant.

i also think it's meaningless to say there are lots of "pointers to emotions ... rather than the actual heart that makes those moments so significant." if something would've made a moment much more significant, it wouldn't be so hard to describe/vague.

Plastics.

Seriously though, the Graduate was the 60s expression of anomie (maybe nihilism), just like some say Coming Home was that for the 70s (an opinion I don't share, but merely refer to because it popped into my head).  Skip the 80s, that expression is found in Fight Club for the 90s, and in the present day, I have yet to see a film to fit the bill, though I'm sure there are many (maybe Ghost World -- I'd have to think on it more).  The difference is, Fight Club remained true to its message to its bitter, ironic end.

Benjamin is an everyman unhappy with his life and unsure of where it's going.  He finds love with this older woman, and lives throughout the film as a rebel.  Yet, when all is said and done, he settles for security in the arms of a girl who really isn't all that interesting.  This film preaches to do your own thing and then betrays that message with an ending that has the most likely, conventional pairing heading off into the sunset.  While there are plenty of memorable scenes, they are betrayed by an ultimate message of conformity.  It's been a few years since I've seen the flick -- and I've seen it twice -- so I can't comment any deeper than that right now, but one thing that makes a film great for me is if it holds up to repeated viewings.  Three decent films that don't are Goodfellas, Do the Right Thing, and The Graduate, and those are a couple reasons why.

i disagree on the repeated viewings part.
everytime i watch it, i love it more.
the editing, cinematography, music, sound design, etc x infinity is top notch.
i love the long contemplative non-dialog sequences set to music.

you have your chance to watch it again.

I'm a lil embarassed about my top 30 cause I forgot some really good ones (for example:  Network).  Here's my top 10, which I'm still pretty happy with.

1.  Raging Bull

5.  8 1/2
6.  Taxi Driver
7.  La Dolce Vita

10. Barton Fink

It's really interesting to see everyone's list -- it makes me realize how many movies I need to see.   Pubrick, can you explain your fascination with Casino and why you consider it superior to other Scorsese films?  I'm interested...

I don't know what is happy about it.
yes, i was going to say that.  ono, you need to rewatch that.  perhaps in the book its a more conventional happy ending but the way nichols lets it play out holding on their faces as they go from happiness to sort of a 'now what?' and the bus drives away it leaves a lot more uncertainty then 'they ride off into the sunset'.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i had made a list of 50 films that i was happy with but in order to chop off 20 of them i took a politcal approach and left off all the films that i was pretty sure would make it without my help.  films that had made it on the first Deka 15 were left off for the most part.  Magnolia, 2001, etc.  i also limited myself to one film per director.  i think i own all of these but 2...

1.  Aliens
2.  Amelie
3.  Annie Hall
4.  The Apartment
5.  Bride Of Frankenstein
6.  Bringing Up Baby
7.  Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
8.  City Lights
9.  Casablanca
10. Casino
11. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
12. ET: The Extra Terrestrial
13. Eyes Wide Shut
14. The Graduate
15. It's A Wonderful Life
16. Jerry Maguire
17. La Dolce Vita
18. Moulin Rouge!
19. Night Of The Hunter
20. Once Upon A Time In The West
21. Raising Arizona
22. Rear Window
23. Rushmore
24. Singin' In The Rain
25. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
26. Sullivan's Travels
27. Touch Of Evil
28. Toy Story
29. Treasure Of The Sierra Madre
30. Wizard Of Oz

likewise my TOP 10 List was also totally politcal trying to champion films i thought would need the help and leaving off some of my favorites.  the only exception being Magnolia which i slotted at number 10 when i got cold feet thinking "if everybody is using this strategy, it might not even place?!"  and it deserved a spot.  my actual 10 favorite films would probably be very different.

1. It's a Wonderful Life
2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
3. Psycho
4. Raiders of the Lost Ark
5. Singin In The Rain
6. The Graduate
7. Once Upon a Time in the West
8. Sunset Boulevard
9. Rushmore
10. Magnolia

No, which is why I'll use visual aid...although I hate they're uneven images.

I had a really good list. Actually very proud of it. Just in the time I made it and now my computer went to shit and I lost it. Too bad. If MacGuffin still has the list I sent into him, great, but doubtful.
Can you at least try for a reasoned representation of what you probably submitted?  I've been waiting since the original spark of the possibility of a Deka Redux to see the GT list of greatness.  Don't disappoint.

not that i haven't been aware of these movies, i just haven't gotten around to watching them.
i'm really surprised by The Shining being on so many lists. i've always loved that movie, even before i was a cinephile.

I bet for sure MacG owns Safe. Which, by the way Fernando, I'm really impressed that you've included in your faves. It's easily in my top 10 of all time, and it's my favorite film of the 1990s. It gets its share of love from the good critics, but it's criminally underseen and underappreciated by most of the film audience. I also love Husbands and Wives, which I don't think ever gets its share of the love. I always feel vindicated when Woody assesses it as his best film, because I completely agree.
