Trying to distract myself from the anticipation for his next feature..... I was wondering if you could help me put down a list of books/authors that PTA named as influences of his during his whole career.

I will start with the one listed on the reddit AMA: Thomas Pynchon, George Orwell, John Steinbeck, Caroline Blackwood, Shirley Jackson, Chester Himes.

Also obviously Upton Sinclair's Oil.
He mentioned being a big fan of JD Salinger in an early interview.
Mentioned David Goodis as well in the same interview.
David Mamet for the first part of his career.

I guess you guys can come up with lots of stuff more

He mentioned John O'Hara, specifically the short story "Bucket of Blood", as part of his research on The Master.

He mentioned Don DeLillo on his WTF interview, and writing an essay on I believe White Noise in the class taught by David Foster Wallace.

Oh and of course L. Ron Hubbard, and Dianetics in Limbo by Helen O'Brien.

A great little book about a lost&found boy, a little like Freddie, little like Eddie... maybe a bit more of whatever PSHjr. ends up doing...
I believe he had written a screen-adaptation of it, not necessarily to be made but more of an exercise.

I hadn't seen this list before, that's cool he mentioned Caroline Blackwood, she's so good. I know that for Phantom Thread he mentioned MR James, Daphne du Maurier and Anya Seton.
