Title: Quirky delights in Punch-Drunk Love... discuss them here
Post by: Marty McSuperfly on February 08, 2003, 03:57:04 AM
Just got back from seeing PDL for the second time (it was released here in the UK yesterday (Friday Feb 7) and I was amazed how many new things I noticed. Little quirky touches that PTA put in that but are not explained. They are just There.

Thought it would be interesting to find out what you folks have spotted in your repeat viewings.

Here's a few things to be going on with. (BTW I'm not saying I'm Mr Clever Movie Guy for spotting these, cos some are obvious now I've seen them, but I just didn't pick up on them the first time I saw it - maybe because it was at the London Film Festival and PTA was sitting six feet away from me!))

1) When Barry is walking through the supermarket and is looking for the perfect coupon offer (the shot leading up to his seeing the puddings for the first time) blurred and WAY in the distance behind him is a woman with a red dress on. She is walking parallel to him the duration of the shot. When he stops after spotting the pudding she continues walking and leaves the shot, disappearing behind an aisle. However a second later she takes a step back into frame (ie as though she is following him) and stands staring. Barry then nervously glances arounds and sees her. At that point she walks off again, disappearing from shot. Hints at Lena? Or am I reading too much into this? It's definitely deliberate, because the woman is definitely reacting to Barry's presence. Is PTA hinting that this could be Lena??

2) When Barry is bundled into the back of the truck and is driven away, a strange bright light sweeps along the road, almost like a UFO. I know PTA has spoken about how he sees sci-fi elements in the story. Is this one of them? BTW I'm not suggesting this is really a UFO, just love the fact PTA has included the UFO imagery.

3) The phone sex scene in Barry's appartment. Apart from being expertly filmed in one take, I LOVE the 'nudge' the camera does halfway through. Barry's head is down, the camera moves in close, blurring the image, then BAM the camera jerks right-to-left almost as though someone had bumped into the cameraman. Wow! Was it a mistake that PTA made the most of (the sound effects on the screen react to the camera move, so I suspect not).

4) Final thing is just a detail he didn't need to put in but did. When Barry and Lena are chatting in the restaurant (pre bathroom frenzy) in a background themanager can be seen forceably leading a customer out the door. At the time I wondered what it was about, but then all was revealed in the shot of Barry and Lena leaving. Standing outside is the guy, smoking a cigarette. He'd been thrown out for smoking! Again, not a big thing but great to know there are all these little touches in the background of the scenes.

Anyone else spot anything?

This isn't tough to spot (all you have to do is watch the movie) but I love that Barry has a Clapper in his apartment.  That just made me laugh.  I love it and I'm not completely sure why.

Great observations, on the old board there was tons of observations about the person in the red dress and outer space connections. Im sure somebody here can summarize it. Wow, I didnt even notice the guy smoking getting kicked out, good observation. Paul sure loves smoking....

i know i have some caps of the girl in the red dress/man in the red suit around somewhere, but on the old boards we had a big, stinking PDL faq list.  it was pretty useful, but you re-raise some interesting questions.

And Reed tripping up Rahads steps.

I saw PDL (for the 4th time) in Liverpool last friday night. Took a girl I've been hanging out with lately, she had not seen it. I was delightly surprised to get our seats in a packed theater. I was worried that some would walk out, hearing the many stories of this happening. My previous three viewings of the film have been with scarce audiences.

As I saw the Columbia logo come up, I could barely contain myself mentally as I eagerly anticipated the opening wide angle shot of Barry on the phone. It was a really cool, almost surreal experience being in another country watching a film I love with people who have never seen it. I fell in love with the movie all over again- the music, Adam, Emily- my favorite part is def. the scenes in the apt. building with Adam running around. The audience really enjoyed the film too, much laughter at 'the right parts.' No one walked out, in fact, most stayed in their seats as the credits rolled. It was just a good night. The girl I took really liked it too. She is more into literature than film, but even she couldn't get over the innovative sound effects/score and the cinematography. Thank you PTA.

I liked how there was no opening credits, just going from the studio logo straight into the movie.  Then, when you think there will be opening credits a little later, we get multi-colored abstract shapes instead.

Is there any other movie that doesn't have any opening credits whatsoever?  Probably, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

No, you're right... I think people have just gotten used to the fact that people make mistakes during movies.  It's just not very funny.

They should only show those at the end of movies when they're really fucked up or funny.  Like people's hair catching on fire.

Interesting tidbit for anybody who didn't know - Being There was the first movie to feature a blooper reel during the end credits. In 1980 I believe it was.

I especially enjoyed the bloopers during the end credits of Ordinary People and Gandhi.

But seriously -- I think Hal Needham pioneered this dubious practice, with Smokey and the Bandit back in 77.  Or Hooper in 78, or The Villain in 79, which preceded Being There.  Maybe I'm wrong.  Certainly there were bloopers at the end of Smoky 2 in 1980, Cannonball Run in 81, Stroker Ace in 83, Cannonball Run 2 in 84, etc.

I especially loved how there were little touches of Sandler goofiness in PDL that you'd never see in a PTA film.

e.g. Sandler walks into the door after trying out the harmonium/showing how unbreakable the plunger is by...breaking it/Sandler falls while running back to his office/Sandler randomly starts tap dancing in the supermarket/concentrating on chatting up Lena while all hell is breaking loose at work/the hilariously wimpy 'No,no,ow,ow,ow' as one of the brothers comes up to punch him/running around with a phone handle cause he doesn't realise he has it etc.

All very cool.

After Adam Sandler beats up the bathroom he's in his office and there is a shot of his hand, I believe as he dials or answers a phone call, and the cuts on his knuckles SPELL OUT "L-O-V-E"

I got a good laugh out of every "Yeah no,..." sentance - that's something I do on a fairly regular basis.

When Barry and Lena are sitting at the table in Hawaii, right between the lines "You got me out of my hotel room.  So nice." and "It really looks like Hawaii here," a man in a gorilla suit walks across the beach in the background.  Why?  Beats me, but I've gotta love an inside joke that PTA knew only a couple people would pick out.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Apollo space mission footage is on every TV.

"What, is it like a secret pudding?" is an incredibly funny line - I have no idea why, though.

Carter's phone extension is 215.  Lena lives in apartment 216.  Why?

While I'm writing details, apologies to Paul at 818-775-3993.  It's Barry's phone number in the movie and while a Paul does answer the phone, it's not the Paul we would want to talk to.  Same goes for Eckhart Auto Body - I figured the number was on the sign so I'd give it a call.  Turns out to be a real body shop that's not too interested in discussing film over long distance.

There's also some amusing stuff in conversation chatter, though not all theatres had audio good enough to make it clear.  At Barry's sister's house, in the chatter immediately before the glass doors get smashed, there's some good stuff - all at Barry's expense.  On the right side of the shot through the glass, the smiling photo of Sandler always got a laugh as well.

It kind of fits with PTA's "sci-fi" feel, though sci-fi would be much better than vintage NASA shots.  I suppose it works pretty well with the metaphor put forth that Lena is the first "visitor" from her planet that has reached Barry (just because they drive on the left dosen't mean THAT much, does it?).

I don't know - mabye when the PDL DVD that actually has commentary and special features comes out there will be some better explanations.

Do you mean the opening crash scene happening on the left side of the street,
followed by Lena entering the driveway from the left side of the street?
I took that to be the subtle connection.
Crash = devastating divorce
Harmonium = discarded broken love
Then because Lena is on the wrong side of the street....she's the one.!
Title: Re: Quirky delights in Punch-Drunk Love... discuss them here
Post by: av8raaron on March 05, 2003, 07:11:48 AM
Actually, I was going for a stupid reference to the fact that Emily Watson and therefore Lena (presumably) is British.

I've agreed with the Lena's love=harmonium metaphor, that's one of only a few obvious harmonium references.  I'm not totally convinced that there's anything to the Jeep being on the left side when it flips or Lena's Geo pulling in from what appears to be the left side of the street.  That seems like it could easily be that way simply because it looked right at the time or somebody thought it would be cool and quirky to do it as such.  Especially since both the taxicab that actually drops off the harmonium and the Atlas "Relocation at it's best" moving van both drive on the right side.

"There's a piano in the street."
"Uh, yeah."

I was obviously on the lookout for Magnolia-like tiny delights the second time round and came up with kind of a weird one: there's this really prominent bright blue bottle of cleaning fluid in Barry's appartment, sitting on the table, as he's making his phone sex call - and the exact same bottle is in Phillip Seymore Hoffman's place of business at the end. Now: what does THAT mean?! I have no idea, but I like it anyway...

There's actually a pretty good amount of stuff that appears both at Barry's office and home and in Dean's office.  Most of the stuff has been covered in forums and at places like ptanderson.com, but there are things like their "first dollars," a harmonium in each, and even a Ukelele in the back of D&D Mattress Man which we only see after the Hawaii sequence.  At Dean's office, there's certainly some "adult entertainment" going on as the phone sex operators are in the next room over, with a few bits of things seen at Barry's business (harmonium, etc.).  At the Funger place in L.A., it looks like the workers have taped up a few nudie photos - they're on the wall above the computer and phone in the warehouse.

there's a copy of this book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0201479656/) on barry's desk at work and I think, I may be hearing things, that the noises the truck makes when turning, when barry and lena are leaving the restaurant, are the notes from the music that's playing in the scene.

I saw it again a local dollar theatre (so happy, was I), and I noticed first of all that Lena has boxes in her apartment with the logo of the moving van that passes them as they leave the restaurant.

Another larger thing I noticed:

Barry's ties match Lena's outfit from the last time he saw her.  He starts out with a blue tie to match his blue suit.  He meets Lena, and she wears an orange/peach sort of thing, right?  Something like that.  Next day, Barry has an orange/gold tie.  Then Lena (with his sister) shows up wearing a deep purple.  Next day, on their date, Barry wears a purple tie.  On the date, Lena wears a red dress.  When Barry goes to Hawaii, he wears a red tie, and it stays that way, since he has no change of clothes, and then at the very end, we don't see his tie, so we don't know.  But I thought it was kinda cute.

One thing I noticed that seemed too odd to be unintentional was in the quick shot with Barry on the plane going to Hawaii, with the person next to him.

The person next to Barry has a look, a little smirk on his face that totally reminded me of the guy who sat next to William H. Macy at the bar in Magnolia.  It was the first person that came to my mind.

Tell me I'm not the only one who thought this...

It's also kind of weird how that shot of Sandler on the plane in PDL resembles the opening shot in the trailer for "Anger Management"

This isn't the exact shot that I wanted, I was looking for the shot of Sandler opening his eyes as he hears the "bong" of the stewardess' announcement. But still, it's an interesting coincidence anyway. OR IS IT?????

It makes sense that his tie is yellow in the plane. Calling it a continuity error would be like calling the final scenes of 2001 with the dude getting older an error also.

I think due to Barry's unrelenting clumsiness, when the flight attendants were passing out drinks Barry spilled his lemonade on his tie. He bought a new one at the Duty Free Shop when he got to the airport.

I like to shop at the duty free shop.

That scene is hilarious, even though the clapper is sooo 15 years ago, hehe...

Little stuff I liked.....

-When 'Georgia' calls Barry back the next morning, Barry walks (slowly) further and further away from the camera as the conversation proceeds...
-Barry's little 'No thanks' when threatened on the phone.
-How he is all pleasant at the party but we notice his smile fading more and more as the camera slowly closes in on him.
-'And bye bye, you stupid motherf***er'
-Tells Lance that he's gotta talk to him about some 'guy'.
-After he tells Dean to go f*** himself, Dean tries to keep his cool, then explodes- 'f***!'
-That sleek kick in the gut/slam in the face that he delivers to one of the brothers (looked so damn cool).
-The bit where he try's to find Lena's apartment again (almost on the brink of tears).
-When he absolutely goes off at his sister over the phone 'I'm gonna f***in' kill you!!! You want that?!!!
-Buys shitloads of pudding so that he can fly to see Lena straight away (so happy about it that he's tap dancing) before it cuts straight to him being told over the phone that the info won't process for 6 to 8 weeks....
-Is more freaked out about a harmonium that's dumped on the street than the car that crashed infront of him just seconds before...
-When ordered to leave the resteraunt after destroying the bathroom ('Sir, I'm gonna crack your f***in' head open') he tells Lena 'I don't like it here, we should leave'....
-Those little glances that Lance does...

I gotta see that movie again.....soon.

That wasn't scripted. Actually, in relation to those bed scenes, Barry's quirk was that he was supposed to be a sleepwalker, waking up dressed in different clothes. Lena wakes up to watch him changing into a hotel bath robe.

small funny things noticed:

After Barry breaks the funger and takes the call from his sister in his office, Lance is in the background whacking 1 then 2 fungers against the bench (which don't break) ..... when he plays the harmonium (just before he walks into the door) someone is sweeping up the broken funger.

When Barry is on the phone trying to cancel his credit card, he asks the operator what her name is. Then in the next cut, when he is finishing off the call, I believe he is talking to a different lady operator! Kinda as if he pursued her for more personal info so she put him onto a different operator. Probably a stretch, but just an interpretation.

I may be scraping for mine, but there's gotta be other Sandler references in this film.

Three things that haven't been mentioned that I loved -

- Barry walks into the living room.  "You have rice in your hair."

- Barry's first trip to the supermarket - Andersen's Soup.  Anyone else notice this?

- The way Lance is looking at Lena when she's asking Barry out.  Like he's assessing whether she's good enough for him or not.

Another thing that probably everyone has noticed - that little red dot moving over the phone booth when Barry is trying to get hold of Lena.  When I first saw this, I thought Barry was about to be taken out by a sniper!

this thread is insane! i love it... anyway, like someone else mentioned before i love the part where barry turns off his lights by clapping! ha ha! i was rolling on the floor! and i also thoroughly enjoyed the part when barry's in his warehouse and he's looking at his harmonium and then the sliding doors doors open up and barry has this insanely scared look on his face. it's pretty hilarious! kinda reminds me of the 'ow ow ow ow ow!' part when one of the brothers is about to hit him. i also enjoyed the part where barry's running from the brothers and you never actually see them until they catch up to him and tell him that they know where he lives. and why they don't run him over with the truck is beyond me. and just killed him there instead of going to his house and trying to do him in there. but anyway, yeah and before barry's running down the street he dives over this railing thing and it's so awesome you don't expect it and then all of a sudden he's airborne and you're like 'wow!' and then he falls out of the camera and then you see him really small at the bottom like he fell a long ways! it's insane! but anyway, yeah i LOVED that part when lance's chair breaks! ha ha! it was just too much and i keeled over and died! it was that funny! but yeah.. . this is all. oh yeah and i felt so good for barry when he was yelling at his sister in hawaii. i like 'yeah!'. i also enjoyed when he broke the glass doors. notice that he broke the first one with his bare hand! what a hero! and the third one comes crashing to the ground. 'twas excellent! and when he was talking to lena on the phone and when she answers and the phone booth lites up! i was screaming! it went crazy!! and the last time i was watching it my buddy jonny told me that he thought this one guy was never gonna move cuz he was kinda blocking barry's face. yeah i heard that parade wasn't supposed to happen and so they did it the next day and there was a parade going on and they just shot it there. but anyway.... enough of my loser antics

ok since this ole thread is being written in again I thought I'd take initiative and ask anyone if they notice this:

right before Barry goes to Hawaii, he starts to follow Red Things. yeah, like the dress Lena was wearing the night of their date? Damn straight!
-Barry runs out of his warehouse to follow the big RED truck

-Barry gives his ticket to the stewardesses at the airport, the stewardesses dressed in RED! oh!

-See, I don't know if the cab Barry hailed was red (probably not, but I'm too lazy to check on a Friday night), but

-The people in the parade were dressed in RED! (coincidence, probably because it was an accident the parade was happening in reality)

-And that little red dot on the phone could have been an accident too, but it was still RED! AH!

that's dumbgad alls I gots to say tonite. go drink now.

When the brothers run into Barry and Lena, one may note that the back left tire of the car has fallen off it's axle.
Questions: Did PTA just leave that the way it is for the hell of it?
Or is it a strange coincidence that the brothers attacked with a tire-iron.
I doubt they walked to the hospital.

Anyways.

calm down, calm down, yes i know it's an old thread.
with no Search feature, sorry if i'm repeating something.

Watching Goodfellas on TV last night, has anyone noticed that Barry cries exactly like Jimmy after Tommy is whacked? Down to the sound and even how he buries his face in his hands and bends over.

They also say "So that's that," or some variant when it cuts back to the overhead shot of Tommy dead on the floor with blood pouring out, which, as we know, is a repeated phrase in PDL.

I weirdly wonder if Sloth is dead all the time  :yabbse-undecided:

well, had anyone noticed the Goodfellas/Jimmy laugh/Barry thing?

i guess the difference between me and some people here is that it's always about movies, i don't care about board politics.

the pure reason for this post, any post, is to make conversation for/about a film and stanley kubrick's favorite nightie.

so many quirky delights! i wanna watch it again as well.

here're a few others that i enjoy:

- barry and lena leave the restaurant and just walk to the car in silence, giving each other awkward glances

- barry, all excited as he arrives at the airport in hawaii, walks rapidly, then starts running, then slows down immediately and keeps walking, then starts running again

- barry at the phone booth in hawaii, asks lena all these questions, then she finally says 'do you want to meet up so we can talk?' to which he replies 'sure. where are you from originally?'

love love love

When he starts playing the piano for the first time, the lighting changes in a middle of a shoot. It's very dark at first but while the camera slowly zooms in on his face the lightning changes to a much warm and bright light. I love that.

I think it could be cool with a thread where we take screenshots of our favorite shots in PDL and then discuss them.

what's creepy about it?

and since you're the only one who's ever made this association in three years i fail to see how it was a "quick" transition..

there's no rule saying you have to use it so a "ban" makes no sense either. i think it's perfectly acceptable just as any other abbreviation we've been using for years, eg. PDL, boogie, maggie, peedy, hardy. or for other directors there's Mully D, EWS, the shin, barryndon, clork. seems quite normal to me.

After reading this thread I decided to stick PDL on last night. Didn't get far into it (will have to watch in it's entirety again soon), but just the very first 10 minutes calmed my 4-week-old. No mean feat, I can assure you. Gonna be playing him the soundtrack to sooth him from now on.

AND, in a continuation of the motif whereby the score melds with the sound-world of the film, when the light switches on we get a "PING!" on the soundtrack.

Barry walking backwards out of his office before he turns and says: "I don't know" then the colors fill the screen. In Sydney, Sydney does a similar movement as he looks around in an exterior shot, the casino lights in the B.G. and turns a complete 180 in his place. I think that's really cool. It's like a little character dance. (Daniel's limp in CMBB is like a constant dance) it's probably been pointed out in this thread but after Barry smashes the plunger and rice flies all over. Before they have dinner one of his his sisters asks if he's been using the dandruff shampoo she bought him.

Redlum that's a lovely drawing. Thanks

Just watched this again a couple days ago.  Rebought the Superbit after making the mistake of loaning out my original (yeah, never do that unless you're willing to never see it again).  Got sick of waiting for the Blu-Ray to come out, and hey, this was only $8-ish new! Also: the computer "final cut" random order extras thing was an interesting novelty I didn't remember from the 2-disc DVD.

It's hard to know if I'm repeating anyone else.  Quickly glanced this thread, but who knows if it has been said elsewhere.  I probably said it before a long time ago in my paper, but the compositions in this film are nothing short of stunning.  One that always stands out for me is when Barry's sisters are making fun of him, he's shown in front of a china cabinet before he smashes three windows.  Bull in a china shop and whatnot.

Much has been made of the fact that he has seven sisters.  Not as much has been said about the fact that he employs no women (though the same conclusions can be drawn and expanded upon).  Also Barry's business employs the use of cheap Mexican labor.  No wonder he's looking to/can afford to diversify.  Again, proving PTA is clearly racist (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=5590.0).

there's a shot where Barry gets back in his vehicle after keeping Lena safe from the brothers and they have the camera mounted on the door.  So, when he shut the door the camera slams with the door, thus pulling the shot into a close up.

Pubricks comment recently about PTA's love for Huston made me realize this exact shot is in WISE BLOOD!!!

Neat nod.

I absolutely love that shot, it's like manic up until when the door slams, like a crescendo, and then it calms the scene down, exactly how Barry is trying to calm Lena down.
That exact shot is in Sexy Beast (2000) aswell btw

I'm sure these have been mentioned before... But my favorite are:

- He's in Hawaii and the phonebooth lights up when Barry hears Lena's voice  (Also the way the cheering increases in the background)

- When Luis Guzman's chair breaks HAHA

- The Signs throughout the film, at very specific moments... "exit" "Relocation at it's best" "we''re open", etc...  Reminds me of that Part in MAGNOLIA right before the rain of frogs, there's a sign that says "Exodus 8:2" and another that says "Everything must go"   :yabbse-smiley:

This is true. Does PTA have any say on this? He must. It's like how woodsy allen can't be bothered releasing his movies on anything but the most barebones of discs, and David Fincher always goes above and beyond on the home releases.

Maybe he thinks he got it right the first time by insisting on that special "superbit" thing that no else ever bothered to do. Maybe that was his quirky delight. It'd be a good interview question to ask anyway.

While it's far from the same, PDL IS available in HD on Netflix streaming. I watched it a few weeks ago and the transfer was pretty decent and the colors are deeper and crisper than the DVD even if it is a bit more digital looking.

I do find that when something hits Netflix streaming in HD, a bluray release often follows. I'm hoping for this and Thief.

thanks for the tip! I was getting ready to watch the DVD this morning and I remembered this. It looks really good.

I had never noticed this, didn't see anyone else bring it up.

When Lance first enters he's like "What's with the suit?" and can't take his eyes off of Barry, sizing him up. The next day when Barry comes in, Lance is in a suit. He holds out his arms like, "Check me out" but Barry is too preoccupied with the phone scam to notice. The next day Lance wears no suit. Poor guy.

In Blossoms and Blood, Barry is going to pick Lena up for their first date. The apartment he goes to is 217- number of the haunted room in The Shining novel. IDK, but this old lady seemed a little too eager to open her door to a stranger. If Barry didn't have a better head on his shoulders and got lured in, he might not have gotten out of there without sustaining some serious trauma. Isn't it funny how her apartment building is like a maze to Barry? Completely deserted too. Something to mull over...

after the 'Thank Yous' in the end credits, it says "Boom - Bang - Larrabee - 91 Hunjee - Hi there - Bye There - For TD"

WTF? I think the 'TD' stands for Ted Demme, but that's the only thing I understand. 91 hunjee?

Wasn't sure if this needed a new thread or not.  Thought I'd leave it here.  Nice essay and some behind-the-scenes stills I've never seen before (as well as the script and some video links) at Cinephilia and Beyond:

'Punch-Drunk Love': The Hilarity of Anxiety and Blossoming Love in Paul Thomas Anderson's 'art house Adam Sandler film'

According to Paul Thomas Anderson, the self-taught San Fernando valley wiz-kid now entering the second half of his storied career, love is what happens when you're busy buying pudding. The general audience has often missed the tender hum of humor coursing through many of Anderson's feature films, as it seems when moviegoers are most turned-off by or non-responsive to his movies they are, in some ways, missing the joke. He has spoken about most of his movies as if they could secretly be comedies; inside jokes between him and his collaborators and friends. His singular characters give him a chance to put a spotlight on the peculiarities and randomness of personality, and while his movies jump between different eras and subject matter, the not-so-phantom thread that ties them all together is Anderson's unflinching humanist gaze, with a wink. You can picture Paul sniggling in the corner to himself as he watches some of his favorite actors and long-time friends bring to life his eccentric, vibrant, sometimes strange characters. Kicking himself that, after fantasizing about it since he was a boy with celluloid dreams, he's actually making movies with Daniel-Day Lewis, Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Philip Baker Hall, Leslie Manville, John C. Reilly, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Emily Watson, and Adam Sandler. Just happy to be doing what he loves, hoping it lands with others. Anderson isn't a man who takes things too seriously, a question that has been belabored while making his interview rounds for his most recent movie Phantom Thread, as he's asked how much he identifies with the solemn, workaholic Reynolds Woodcock. He gives the impression that, sure, he has his Woodcockian moments, but since his family now uses the name "Woodcock" to describe someone being Scrooge-like or grumpy, his natural sympathies clearly lie on the other side of grumpiness, where they always have. The side that can't get enough of The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy, or Happy Gilmore. The side that, during an interview with Rolling Stone on the heels of making Magnolia, obsessively praised an actor most had discarded as being the prince of dumb, bro-y humor: "'Are you aware of Adam Sandler?' he'll ask, intensely serious, his tone practically quivering with the joy of discovery. 'I mean, are you truly fucking aware? He is headed for a level of genius in creation and acting that I just cannot wait to see keep going.'" It is this same side of Anderson that came upon a story in a newspaper of a man acquiring over 1 million flyer miles by purchasing just over $3,000 worth of pudding and felt a burning urge to meet that guy and turn his story into a movie. If you don't find Punch-Drunk Love funny, maybe you're being somewhat of a Woodcock yourself, failing to respond to the cheeky empathy that draws Anderson to make movies about these unusual, tormented souls. Maybe Anderson's character studies are too subtle or bizarre to ever earn him Marvel money, or, more to the point, maybe people don't find people as cinematic or funny as Anderson does. Nevertheless, the matchless blend of laughter and compassion and the genius casting of Sandler in his first "serious" role have made PTA's fourth feature film a cherished favorite among both his and Sandler's fans.

Punch-Drunk Love earned Adam Sandler his first and only Golden Globe nomination, for best actor in a musical or comedy, and won Anderson a Best Director award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the coveted Golden Palm. Producer Joanne Sellar, who has produced all seven of Anderson's feature films since Boogie Nights, said that "After Magnolia, which was a huge, dark, challenging movie, I think Paul wanted to make something that was contained, uplifting and sweet."

The power of Punch-Drunk Love may be in its ability to bridge two distinct worlds together. Anderson has described the movie as an "art house Adam Sandler film," and it is this marriage of avant-garde cinema and Adam Sandler's flair for the moronic that make it such a special moment in 21st century American cinema. Roger Ebert interviewed Anderson at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival and noted, in a piece he wrote for the Chicago Sun-Times, that Punch-Drunk Love was the first Adam Sandler movie he liked. Upon hearing the good news, Sandler replied "I will have to tell my parents, so they can watch your show again," as the Sandler clan was very much aware that Ebert had negatively reviewed each of his previous movies. Punch-Drunk Love surely validated Sandler as an actor capable of more, full of a deeper reservoir than his previous movies let on. Or, perhaps we just weren't paying attention. Maybe we watched his previous comedies with somewhat of a Woodcockian mind; judgmental, constricting, and rigid. Anderson aimed to make a movie for everyone to see in Sandler what he sees: a jovial, silly, nothing-but-good-natured lug in oversized t-shirts and shorts capable of real on-screen emotion. Anderson told Ebert, in the same interview, that after "coming out of making Magnolia and living with that for a while, I went, 'God, I would really like to take a left turn and make myself happy, get rid of all this cancer and crying.'"

So, Paul gave himself the gear-shifting task of making a 90-minute comedy starring Adam Sandler. Sandler, as Barry Egan, doesn't move normally and he mumbles in completely incomplete sentences, fighting through fits of emotions as people attack him in words and expectations. He works at a lowly warehouse as a plunger salesman, where he goes from one asinine phone call to the next. He has seven sisters, who delight in reminding him how they used to call him "gay boy," and, when Barry smashes one of his sister's windows at his own birthday party, they erupt in a hyena-like chorus of "you retard, Barry!" Barry is certainly a special berry. He is a paranoid outsider who couldn't even tell you where the inside was if you asked him, all he knows is he isn't in it. Barry is less looking for things as he is bombarded by things, dominated by people and a reality that he doesn't gel with, to the point of sensory overload and over-feeling. Barry is a man swimming against the current heading nowhere, with no clear path or direction, no stability or certainty. The only thing he is sure of is he must escape, wherever he is, whoever he is, and whatever his career is, it's not working.

Judd Apatow, who wrote and directed the 2009 "serious" Adam Sandler movie Funny People, reveres Punch-Drunk Love as one of his all-time favorite movies. As movies continue moving more toward the block-busting, movies-as-rollercoaster-rides, Anderson remains happily devoted to his particular blend of people-centric cinema. His genius lies in turning character into cinematic marvel, and with Punch-Drunk Love, Anderson created a whole new genre of Adam Sandler movies. Not bad for a $25 million movie that almost broke even making $24.6 at the box office.

Where almost all of Quentin Tarantino's characters are blessed with the unifying gift of gab, with a notable exception of De Niro in Jackie Brown, Anderson's characters speak more individually, with unique syntaxes, cadences, and rhythms. Barry Egan, just like Doc Sportello in Inherent Vice and Freddy Quil in The Master, isn't a talker. Where Barry generates his laughs is in his frustrated physicality reminiscent of Jacque Tati, and his behavior, and the very fact that he has difficulties with communication. Barry doesn't have the words to say anything funny, and he'd never be cast in a Tarantino picture because he's a mumbler. He isn't in control of his moods, his rhythm, or his words, He's a kind of a lost man-child going from tantrum to tantrum, smacked back and forth like a ping-pong ball between different people and events.

Sandler waddles more than walks, perhaps as he's always done, this time in a sort of Charlie Chaplin way with a cup of coffee seemingly stuck to his hand. This odd man in the blue suit, the blue suit being inspired by Jean-Paul Belmondo's character in Godard's Pierrot le Fou, is a businessman, and businessmen drink coffee. You can sometimes see the anxiety and frustration course through his body as Barry squirms in agony trying to navigate and adapt to a world he doesn't understand. If you were to ask a room of kids what's "wrong" with the twitchy, restless-body-syndromed Barry, they'd yell that he has to go to the bathroom. In a 2002 interview with Variety, Anderson said of Barry "I think he's a bit confused, he's a bit angry, and a lot of it has to do with how he grew up. It's about that feeling when you can't say something, and you just start to throw punches."

At one point during a DGA talk dedicated to the career of Francis Ford Coppola featuring Anderson, Catherine Hedwick, and David O Russell, Coppola turns the spotlight on Paul and asks if he knew what he was doing when he made Punch-Drunk Love, stating that it's one of his favorites of Paul's movies. Paul, in his typical nervous shuffle, erupts into laughter and squirms out his answer that no, he was just "tryin' to get through every day." In the same talk, Anderson muses that he thought he made a hit: "I think I made a film that every single person is gonna see and is gonna make like 500 billion dollars, you know, I finally did it. And no one saw it, and some people really like it but..." In a similar fashion, in 1964 Jean-Luc Godard described his intentions for making Bande à part as wanting to make a movie out of a "sure-fire story which will sell a lot of tickets." Bande à part, like Punch-Drunk Love, didn't sell many tickets.

Emily Watson, as Lena, speaks so well with her love-locked eyes. She says, in an interview at the Cannes film festival with Anderson, Sandler, and Hoffman, that Paul's main request or direction was that she do "nothing," which took some getting used to. Lena watches Barry as he fumbles over words and trips on emotions in ways that resemble Tati or Inspector Clouseau; the endearing fool who can't quite get in society's stride. Lena and Barry are locked into an entirely different orbit from other people, and seem to feel each other's vibrations, communicating through their rocky anxiety-fueled rhythms and undeniable synergy. When they're together the medley of dancing colors in the animations, made by the artist Jeremy Blake, seem to harmonize and calm, and the lens flares of love, by Anderson's long-time cinematographer Robert Elswit, bless the couple with a warm, shiny kiss from the sun. Rarely are emotions, and their transformations, so explicitly shown. For Anderson, quite literally in Punch-Drunk Love, emotions are special effects.

The definition of "punch-drunk" is, in a word, confusion. It's a term commonly used to describe boxers rendered confused and unable to talk or move normally as a result of too many blows to the head. The title is undoubtedly also a nod to Radiohead's song "Punchdrunk Lovesick Singalong," released in 1995. Of course, this is only the first of Anderson's many connections to Radiohead as Jonny Greenwood, the lead guitarist and best hairdo wearer of the band from Oxford, has become somewhat of a John Williams to his Steven Spielberg. Jonny would work with PTA on his next two features after Punch-Drunk Love, the incomparable American epic There Will Be Blood and the crooked Scientology buddy-flick The Master, and most recently Phantom Thread, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Score. Anderson has also shot several dreamy music videos for Radiohead.

The harmonium in Punch-Drunk Love can be seen as Anderson's version of Kubrick's monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey, a seemingly random object glowing in big fat vibes of mystery, making Barry somewhat of a head-scratching-monkey. When he first encounters the harmonium, after a truck drops it by the curb in front of his work, Barry stares at it in a two-shot showdown. He then picks it up and runs it inside as if it were seconds away from exploding, dropping his coffee mug as he see-saws and sways his way back to work. Is the landing of the harmonium a symbol of the love about to walk into his life, is it a symbol of the impending phone-sex scandal, is it a beacon of change, or is it nothing at all, a gift delivered to the wrong address, picked up by a paranoid, blue-suit-wearing pudding-buyer? Whatever the harmonium initially was, it definitely becomes a symbol for something for Barry. Probably something he doesn't understand, but feels, just like everything else.

The score by Jon Brion, who previously scored Hard Eight and Magnolia for Paul, blossoms the movie into a love story with jagged edges. The music perfectly crescendos and climaxes with the rise and fall of Barry's anxiety, overwhelming emotions, and paranoia throughout, and the score is so tightly entwined with the rhythm of Barry and Lena's emotions and interactions, at times it feels like they can hear the music. To call Punch-Drunk Love a musical wouldn't be too far off, it's just that no one ever sings. One of the only songs with vocals is Shelley Duvall's "He Needs Me" that Anderson ripped from Robert Altman's Popeye, a nod to one of his favorite and most inspirational filmmakers. Brion's score verges on the avant-garde, as a kaleidoscope of electronic sounds form a maddening, dizzying sonic representation of Barry's confusion. The more unconventional pieces sound like computers trying to talk to each other, with a driving mixture of clicks and beeps and swooshes that surely echo the topsy-turvy reality that is Barry's life. Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character is the loudest character in the movie, but even he doesn't sing, he screams. Hoffman's most underrated skill may have been his screaming ability, and the tirade of bleeped this-and-that he throws at Barry over the phone, waving his hands around like a lunatic because his phone-sex con isn't going so hot, may be his most memorable scream. Hoffman goes from a desperate and humiliating Dirk Diggler fanboy in Boogie Nights, to a good-hearted caretaker in Magnolia, back to being a prick more like his role in Hard Eight as the tool who beats Sydney at a game of craps.

Anderson relishes movies that change gears, like Jonathan Demme's Something Wild; capable of shifting from one mood to another with the flip of a switch, and Barry's volatility allows Punch-Drunk Love to operate on a level where anything can happen, as fear, anger, and sadness are all a mere poke away. Comedy, melodrama, romance, crime, and family issues all tip-toeing around each other, swirling into a concoction so maddening it'd make anyone want to buy bundles of pudding and fly away.

In her last book of interviews "Afterglow," published in 2002, Pauline Kael notes that she had an "awfully good time" with Anderson's Magnolia, enjoyed the first half of Boogie Nights, and describes his movies as being "fun to watch." She then goes on to say, while discussing various contemporary stars and movies, that she doesn't "get Adam Sandler at all" and doesn't understand "what makes him funny to people." Perhaps Punch-Drunk Love could've worked its magic on Kael as it did with Ebert, and converted her to see the Sandler-light, but that's one we'll never know. Punch-Drunk Love reaches to people on both sides of the cinematic isle, trying to soothe the nay-saying elitists into realizing that it's O.K. to enjoy a Sandler movie. Nobody will judge you. The final shot of the movie shows Lena with her arms lovingly folded around a serene Barry as he sits playing his harmonium. Lena whispers into his ears "so here we go," and the relationship takes off with one last blossom of blue light.

Written by Adam Buffery. Born in 1990, Adam grew up on musicals, thanks to his Israeli mom and British dad, and wanted to be Gene Kelly after seeing Singin' in the Rain. He would like to thank Spielberg and John Williams for giving him a lifetime fear of sharks. Adam's favorite filmmaker is Paul Thomas Anderson, and he recently moved to Los Angeles where he's writing his first feature film.

Great thread --
Something I've yet to see mentioned, and it ties into the UFO light flash + Paul mentioning the film has shades of sci-fii: Harmoniums,  (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/7489150-the-creatures-reproduce-by-flaking-the-young-when-shed-by) as well as being musical instrumentz (featured in Junun, too!), are  a species in the caves of Mercury  (https://aliens.fandom.com/wiki/Harmonium)

Hi guys i don't remember if we have a Punch Drunk Love thread so I thought I would just put this here. Its an interview with the owner of the Punch Drunk Love location and the film's location manager. Fascinating stuff. I always knew that shooting was loose and sort of wherever we go as he does now but hearing some of the stories is fascinating.

I only just realized that the restaurant where Barry and Lena have their first date and Barry beats up the bathroom is only a short walk from my apartment, on Lankershim in North Hollywood. So, that's fun. Formerly Le Petit Chateau, now Le Petit Comedy Club.

Wish I could now. Last few days, a lot has changed. Newest roommate turned out to be a total asshole who essentially took the place over and is now running a fucking start-up real estate company out of the common area - had zero respect for our privacy, threw big maskless parties throughout which total strangers would use my private bathroom despite my politely asking them not to and putting a sign on the door (he later aggressively argued with me about it, insisting it was no longer just mine to use, despite those being the terms when I moved in), was a total slob, booze and drugs all over (I'm sober and he knows it), had his "boys" squatting there from day one, constantly blasted his insufferable music morning/noon/night, on and on. Myself and another roommate backed out of the lease and moved out within a day of each other this week. Now that the landlord is wise to it, she has been very apologetic and is going to redraft the lease, releasing us and making him solely financially responsible for the sudden vacancies. (I even sent her a check for May rent figuring it was the right thing to do, and she's insisting on sending it back to me.) The guy didn't even pay a deposit. The apartment was so peaceful and lovely until he showed up. Now it's Bro Central. Hopefully he gets evicted soon. He doesn't deserve that place.

I'm spending the summer in NY and returning to LA in the fall. Sorry for the long post, it's been a huge bummer whirlwind.

But yes, totally should have taken a giant shit in Le Petit Chateau. Missed opportunity. Maybe next time.

Edit: not the appropriate thread for this rant, obviously. I'll move it soon.

but also the sheer surface material of your moving to LA saga (compounded with the plague and a movie production) has the ingredients necessary for a robust movie script. as in, well, I of course would picture it as a 70min long pre-code movie, although contemporary austerity asks for 110min, and going the limit is over 2 hours, and a whole thing is over 3 hours, but however you spin it you have the existential reallife experience you need to write a script

it's PTA talking about straight faced humor for example Peter Sellers. then it's Emily Watson saying the production felt unique and Sandler isn't used to unique but he felt fine about it being made up as it went along: simple but musical

PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE at Eckhart Auto Body - July 10th, 2021

Delayed by Covid (from last April), this awesome idea for a PDL screening came off without a hitch tonight.

Highlights:

Overhearing a gentleman describe how the harmonium that Sandler ran with was a 'fake'--they were concerned about dropping or damaging the 'real' one.  When I asked him if he worked on the film, he said, yes, he was a P.A.--one of his first jobs.  More questioning revealed that he's worked on most of PTA's films since.  Said he was on the camera department for Soggy.  Introduced himself as Aaron.  Turns out he's part of the 'extended family'.  (His last name turns out to be "Tichenor".   Yes, Dylan's baby brother.  He's listed in the credits on PDL as PTA's Assistant.)

Seeing the owner, Mark, again.  He gave me a personal tour last year, and he's still as nice as ever.

Met a couple that travelled from Chicago (!!) for this event specifically.  Turns out he's an r/PTA and fellow-Xixaxer who'd reached out to me for suggestions on where to stay in the Valley.  Super nice guy with an adorable sister.  Mark gave them the VIP treatment...

Found it interesting that the film was (digitally) projected from behind the screen.

Learned some interesting factoids:  The code-name for the project at the time was "X-4 Project" (Paul's 4th feature.)  The name of Barry's company was ""Bargan International" (BARry eGAN)

A fun moment was when the organizer introduced Mark--who then ran the length of the property carrying the cardboard harmonium that they parked out on the curb for the event.  (They could not find an actual affordable harmonium to buy or rent!)

It was a great night--well worth the 15 month wait!   :bravo:

[edit] TL;DR   No.

He didn't offer, and I sort of instinctively know not to pry too hard.   In retrospect, I might have asked if he has heard how post-production is going and/or if he's heard any rumors of a crew screening--but it's unlikely someone in the camera dept would be privy to any of that stuff.

(The one question I beat myself up for NOT asking!:  "Is your brother editing this one?")

I joked that we should have recognized each other, since I had visited locations so often.  He counter-joked that without our masks, no one would recognize anyone since then...  :yabbse-grin:  (He's not wrong.  He's the only one that noticed the Soggy-related item I was wearing, too.)

I didn't know his lineage during our main conversation out on the sidewalk--just that he'd worked on several PTAs since PDL.  I only pieced it together a couple of minutes later after searching the crew credits.  He looks just like his brother, too.  That should have clued me much sooner.  He and his now-wife had just started dating at the time of PDL.  She was very impressed he was working on a PTA, she being quite the PTA fan at the time herself.

Just watched on HBO Max, for some reason the scene where he's walking up to the Mattress Man store is completely silent? I'm not crazy right, "Lonely Blue Boy" is supposed to be playing there? Is this just me or a weird HBO Max thing, why would that be

Yep, Lonely Blue Boy is definitely supposed to be there, then carries over into the interior as source music.

Aren't music rights the bane of releasing movies on future media?  Has to be related to that somehow?

It's funny cause I noticed I could sort of hear it in the background during the confrontation scene, but very soft. Like they tried to dim it or remove it without being able to fully do it without messing with the dialogue. And as for the rights thing, yeah, that must be it. But it's so strange to me that they could just release a movie on their platform without having the rights to all the songs in it. Not like that song is an insanely crucial part of the movie or anything, but weird that people watching for the first time on HBO Max just have no idea the song is even in the movie. Also makes me question other things I've seen on streaming services, how many times have I watched something that is lacking something memorable/arguably important like that.

Boogie's 24th anniversary few days ago, PDL today... what a month.

I first watched PDL after Blood came out. I was a major fan of Sandler and vividly remember the weird TV ads for it, but never got around to it. Ironically, the Magnolia TV spots and trailers were ingrained in my memory as well for almost 10 years. And I of course knew what Boogie Nights was. But the Oscar buzz and hype for Blood made me check it out immediately. After that, I plunged right into PTA's work and the rest is history.

Good timing because the following year after my deep dive was when The Master was announced (2009). I read the leaked script around then, too. Although it was a long wait that payed off, it was perfect time to become a fan.

PDL had a major impact on me. Never experienced a depiction of loneliness like that for a mainstream film. The colors, the music, the "He Needs Me" scene.. I was hooked

After Boogie and Magnolia, seeing PDL absolutely sealed my fate in terms of PTA Fandom.   It was both comforting and DIScomforting to see how much of myself was embodied in Barry.   I knew exactly what he was feeling--because I had felt much of it myself at certain points in my life.
