Title: Coffee and Cigarettes
Post by: El Scorchoz on February 23, 2004, 08:38:12 PM
Anyone see this new Jim Jarmusch film at any film fest? The film's basically a bunch of black and white short improv pieces with a really diverse group of actors/celebrities.

Some parts of it are pretty funnny.

Wouter Barendrecht's Fortissimo Film Sales is heating up the Coffee. Fortissimo has picked up the worldwide rights to Coffee and Cigarettes, the latest effort from helmer Jim Jarmusch. The film will be screening out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival and is also now slated to screen at the Toronto Film Festival.

The project began back in 1986 and features Jarmusch's friends and colleagues discussing various world issues over coffee and cigarettes. Among the topics discussed in the black and white film are the Elvis conspiracy and Paris in the 1920s. Roberto Benigni, Steve Buscemi, Cate Blanchett and Iggy Pop are some of the stars that appear in the film.

I think he filmed a few more. There's one with Cate Blanchett, one with Bill Murray and RZA & GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, one with Alfred Molina and Steve Coogan and one with The White Stripes.

I saw this at South By Southwest.

It was one of the best films at the fest.  I also went to a Q&A with Jarmusch.

He's been filming these since the mid-eighties, between films to keep busy.

There are eleven shorts... they aren't shown in the same order they were filmed, but the first three were the first three he filmed and the last two (including the Bill Muray, RZA, GZA one that is fucking brilliant) were the latest to be filmed.

Anyway, see this movie.  It's got some great moments.

oh, and Meg White is a shittttttttty actress.

Most of the shorts are really great and a lot of them reference eachother very very subtly.  The two most brilliant casting decisions were Bill Muray with RZA & GZA and Roberto Benigni with Steven Wright (Strange to Meet You).

What makes this different from most movies that are like this is that the shorts are actually really short.

Saw it last week. It works more in terms of observing Jarmusch's progress as opposed to it necessarily being a real movie. You can clearly see his writing and directing growing (as well as his budgets). The episode I was most impressed by was probably Kate Blanchett's. She gave brilliant dual performances.

The Blanchette shorts is one of my least favorite.

It's good, it's just the most obvious and cliched, it doesn't really feel like a Jarmusch story.

I'm gonna go to the San Francisco International Film Fest in April.  Coffee and Cigarettes is playing there but I'm so sure that it'll be packed... actually, I think it might be opening the festival... in which case there's no way I'd be able to get a ticket.

But if somehow it works out and I get the chance to, then I'm definitely interested in seeing it.  The trailer looks funny.

This movie is just all around understated greatness.

My favorite: the last one, with Bill Rice and Taylor Mead. It's the most meditative of the bunch, and it's just lovely.

My next favorite: Tom Waits and Iggy Pop. That's about all that needs to be said about that.

My other favorites: Steve Coogan and Alfred Molina was the slickest and most generally pleasing, and the one with Cate Blanchett is stunning not because of the content but just for her performance(s); it's hard to believe they're both her.

I appreciated the shout out to Joe Strummer at the end of the credits. Jarmusch's taste in music is impeccable. As is his filmmaking.

saw this tonite, not because i really thought it was theatre-worthy, but because i'm moving out of this crummy town tomorrow and i wanted to go to the great arthouse one last time.  i thought the coogan/molina one was the best, then the cate blanchett, then iggy pop/tom waits.  overall though as a film it wasnt very good, certainly not worth anyones 9 dollars.  it's the sort of thing had he put them up separately on like, jimjarmusch.com or something i would've probably watched them and smirked.  maybe showed my girlfriend, maybe not, clicked off and never really thought about them again.

as a whole it really doesnt work as a film, as some of the shorts were good and some were downright boring.  if the shorts had been conceived as a whole film from the start, perhaps he could've made more of a point to the whole thing, but as it stands he sort of tried to weave a few of them together at the end and it didnt really do much. so, other than sort of going 'hey, its bill murray!', and getting the same sort of cheap thrills seeing what celebrities will pop up as flipping through US weekly and seeing laura flynn boyle walking her dog, the movie is NOT RECOMMENDED.

Citizen Kane is a 5 and Coffee and Cigarettes is a 4?  okay, i cant argue an opinion.  but i really didnt see this as much of a movie.  it was a series of almost unrelated 1 act's, some of which were badly written and acted and assembled together into a film which was not cohesive or consistent.  there were a few shining moments of comedy, but they were all pretty slight.

u hav to recall duderino's rating system, which used to put Goodbye Lenin in the same category as Magnolia..

Quote from: Chest RockwellWell I think the point he's getting at is you're giving Goodbye, Lenin the same grade you're giving Magnolia. You're giving Goodbye, Lenin...the same grade...as Magnolia.

that's back when he was using letters. i think numbers are even harder cos u can only hav 2 levels per number. without having seen this i'm pretty sure it'll be a 3.5/5 at best, or a B-. i can assign these ratings cos they're completely meaningless.

You're so right. Some of the vignettes felt like weak student films; with the cheap production design and no direction (see: progress), plus the simple set-ups and what felt like cutaways. The "Renee" one had some sense of intrigue, with her getting the coffee just right and looking through the Guns And Ammo-type magazines, but there was no payoff. The ones that seemed to work better played away from the whole coffee and cigarettes hook.

The last one with Bill Rice and Taylor Mead is the best. Taylor Mead is so delightful and utterly charming.

The rest of the vignettes I felt were riding too much on who the actors were. But I like the leitmotif of the checkered cloth/table/tableware. It was like a reference to a game, how we play verbal/social/etc games over a cup of coffee...

Not to resurrect this messiah, but I just watched it. Also foray, leitmotifs, I believe, refer only to musical motifs, basically they're theme songs for characters. Visual motifs are just visual motifs.

Waits and Iggy, what a hilarious dynamic. I think it's interesting how most every conversation relied on extreme social awkwardness. The best ones did: Molina/Coogan, Blanchett/Blanchett, Waits/Iggy. The White Stripes, well Jack was cool, Meg sucked. The Tesla coil was there to add a gimmick, because there delivery was gonna sound hammy to begin with. I did laugh aloud when the guy from the kitchen (the evil twin from earlier) names what a GFI is and then gets offended.

Molina and Coogan were brilliant. RZA, GZA, and Murray, not so great. I love how Jarmusch attached bits of dialogue from the early shorts to the ending shorts. Made the film almost seem important, when really Jarmusch is just a goofy bastard. The guy with the dice, he was intriguing, as Mac put it with Renee.
