Yearly reminder that the Oscars are always bad and there's no point getting worked up about it.

Agreed, but just a few quick complaints...

Uncut Gems was utterly robbed, which tells you everything you need to know about how boring and predictable these voters are.

Knives Out should've gotten a lot more love.

Joker leading the pack makes me want to punch things. Joaquin winning for it, and not the other amazing work he put out last decade, is shameful.

Willem Dafoe definitely should be up there for Lighthouse.

1917 is the boring choice and will probably win, and its fine. It's The Artist of this year. The great ones will live on regardless of Oscar attention.

I still think it was a particularly strong year for film.

i know it's not you guys, but there is a general consensus among Safdie fans that Uncut Gems isn't their strongest. i was worried it'd be just me but no it's common. frankly Uncut Gems noms wouldn't have elevated the platform and would have in fact fit in perfectly well along with other boring and predictable noms

Alethia

I actually agree. Much as I love Uncut Gems and Good Time, I still think Heaven Knows What is their strongest. Not sure how many others would agree, but it's my truth.

I'm just slightly less disinterested in the Oscars this year than last.  (Last year was awful.  I literally didn't even watch the ceremony for the first time.  Ever.  In my life.)  I think there was only one or two films last year I was interested in, and this year there are 3 or 4 or 5 I could work up a little thrill for a win.  Jojo, Irishman, Toy Story 4 were the nominees I responded the most positively to.  Ford & Ferarri and Hankies Mr. Rogers were mostly entertaining...   (No noms for "Maiden" or that nut butter raptor, tho.)

I've been yelling at Oscar choices since "The Artist", I think.

A few this year I haven't seen yet (1917, Little Women, a few others.)  So many I found overrated:  Hollywood, Gems, Pain, Marriage, Parasite.   Finally watched Joker.  Thought it was mostly...OK.  I guess I went into it with a "show me" attitude after all of the praise and vitriol it received.  Wasn't as good as the praise, nor as awful as the outrage.  [shrug]

jenkins

in the big picture your support of nut butter raptor was essential and meaningful

(There's even an Easter Egg in there directed right at me. )

I'm fairly happy overall with how the evening went. As predicted, Brad won, and it was pleasant - not surprising but definitely not certain - that Parasite won as much as it did.

But my God, was that the worst Oscar show in recent memory or what? It was extremely tedious and unentertaining. This show desperately needs a host, and ideally one that loves cinema and wants to celebrate it - and even cinema beyond the current year's highlights. Recently, it seems the show is way too interested in social media moments, it needs to course-correct and become unabashedly a celebration of movies beyond all else. Billy Crystal used to be great at this, but he's way too outdated these days as was evidence by his last turn. But when Steve Martin showed up at the start, it made me think that maybe him and Short hosting together might be a way to go. Hopefully next year's show will move to the new Academy Museum's theatre, and that'll give it the shot in the arm it needs. But my God... The show reeked of desperation to be inclusive and diverse after all but 1 best acting nominees was white, it was painful too watch. And FYI, those shots of the audience jamming to Eminem did nothing to decrease the idea of #oscarssowhite. Any why was Eminem there anyway? There was already too much live music performances. Next time, just make it a medley of the best song nominees and please leave it at that. Make the focus movies. Make it fun. The In Memoriam segment was also awful this year, they skipped through everyone so quickly, and the whole thing was broadcast of a camera looking at the screen. It all felt very rushed, sloppy, and disrespectful. A horrible show, but at least I'm satisfied with who a bunch of the awards went to, given the nominees.
He held on. The dolphin and all the rest of its pod turned and swam out to sea, and still he held on. This is it, he thought. Then he remembered that they were air-breathers too. It was going to be all right.

Drenk

If Bong hadn't won Big, it would have been the most dreadful ceremony of the century so far, yes. He brought life to a zombie.
Ascension.

At least we can all forget 1917 now

Thank god for that.

Overall I think the awards were about as good as you can except from an Academy that gave best picture to Greenbook last year. Parasite sweeping and making history like it did was a fun watch. JP gave an earnest but nonsensical speech, but Brad did good. I wish Marty/Irishman had won something.

Holy hell does this show need a host though. Maya/Kristen and Will/JLD were all so great, how much fun would it have been had they hosted throughout.

Rooty Poots

I thought Janelle Monae was incredible, and loved her "Oscars is so white" moment of rebellion. That and Parasite's win were the best parts. And Maya & Kristen would be awesome hosts. Or Maya & Will.
