Title: Dexter
Post by: gob on October 24, 2006, 01:59:21 PM
I have just recently seen the first 3 episodes of "Dexter" the show about a slightly friendly serial killer/forensics guy and I think it's fookin' genius. It's gruesome and funny and Michael C Hall is pitch perfect in the title role.

Anybody else like it?

'Dexter' promo to dye for
Fountains run red for Showtime

Showtime and creative marketing agency Pop2Life will be turning fountains red in 14 U.S. cities Thursday to promote the second season of Showtime's drama series "Dexter."

The network insists, however, that red was chosen because it is Showtime's corporate color and meant to get noticed and does not symbolize the blood spilled in the show about a blood-spatter expert for the Miami police who also happens to be a serial killer.

Fountains in New York's Times Square, at Hollywood & Highland as well as in Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Miami, Houston, Denver, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Phoenix will be dyed red from morning till night, and the sites will be cordoned off with branded banner tape to promote the premiere of "Dexter" on Sunday. Five of the 14 fountains are being custom-built for the promotion, including 12-foot fountains in Times Square and at Hollywood & Highland.

"We're not out there to frighten people," said George DeBolt, vp media and promotions at Showtime. "Red is an important color for the network. It's our corporate color. Whatever people take away from this is what they take away, but we're using the color red so that it's noticed.

" 'Dexter' is not a horror series," he added. "It's a series about a serial killer who happens to be in forensic police work. There is blood in the show, but we're not doing this to convey the notion of blood or horror because that would be off strategy with how we promote the show."

DeBolt said Showtime was unconcerned about any potential negative fallout from the promotion like that experienced by Cartoon Network in February. At that time, its guerrilla marketing campaign for "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" turned into a daylong terrorism scare in Boston, with police suspecting that blinking boxes placed around the city by the network were bombs.

"We are following every legal and city government procedure," DeBolt said. "We filed all the necessary permits, and we're not doing anything the cities themselves do not know about. This will be branded 'Dexter' and 'Showtime' so people will know it's a promotional stunt."

edit: they died the fountain in Love Park red. I might try to go down and take pictures later if I have time. There's caution tape around it with the Dexter logo on it.

I've been catching up on season 1, almost done.  I digs it so far, though it's a little sloppy sometimes on the mystery clues being too obvious, and the cinematography really blows - so many shots that looked like big-budget student films.  I think, like Lost, this show owes a lot of its structure to comicbooks, except, when Lost keeps on building up insatiable tension and mysteries through backstories after backstories and arcs after arc, Dexter seems intending on finishing them.

wanted to say that for the last few weeks i've been unable to wait for the next dexter after seeing the latest episode, and the feeling was getting more and more intense each week. i did not think last week could be topped for sheer "i want to know what's going to happen"ness, but it did. to the max. JESUS.

and apparently it was the most watched showtime episode ever (http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/10516). it deserved it.

JESUS is right. i am publicly apologizing for not gushing about this show sooner. there's like one person reading this thread so..

Doakes is a son of a bitch. and even though i'd love to watch Dex chainsaw him too, i'm sure he won't die... there is no way he will.

... fuck i really hope i'm jinxing this so he will.

Bought the first season on the board's recommendation. I'm really enjoying it... a nice surprise. It's good to see Michael Hall again.

Two really enjoyable recommendations this week. Dexter and Okkervil River. Keep it up, Xixax.

Oh I know.  Just watched season 1 and three episodes were about revealing who the ice cream truck killer was.  But it was blatantly revealed in the first of those episodes.  Sometimes the writing is really, really bad too.  How about when he's about to kill the shrink?  Is that how a serial killer would give his first ever confession, like he'd been keeping a birthday party a surprise?  And if you didn't get it:  Dexter poses as an ordinary person with a full range of emotions but he's just faking it.  Why, outside of the irony, is Dexter's profession a criminal investigator?  Because Mary Tyler Moore's was a reporter?

We watched the whole season though.  Pretty good.

'Dexter' picked up for 2 more seasons
Showtime orders 24 episodes of Emmy-nominated series

By Kimberly Nordyke
Oct 21, 2008
Showtime has renewed its top-rated drama series "Dexter" for two more seasons.

The premium cable network has ordered 12 episodes each for Seasons 4 and 5, with the fourth season set to go into production in the spring in Los Angeles.

Season 3 premiered Sept. 28 and is averaging 2.5 million weekly viewers combined across all airings, up 16% over the same period last season. When DVR and on-demand numbers are factored in, Showtime expects that number to exceed 3 million weekly viewers.

"Dexter," which stars Michael C. Hall as a complicated and conflicted blood-spatter expert for the Miami police department who moonlights as a serial killer, was nominated for five Emmys this year, including best drama series and best lead actor in a drama. The show also received a 2008 Peabody Award.

Showtime president of entertainment Robert Greenblatt credited the cast, producing team and Jeff Lindsay, author of the books on which "Dexter" is based, for the show's success.

"I thought at best we would attract a devoted cult audience but soon realized that, ironically, this show is so thematically rich and layered with humanity that audiences of all kinds have flocked to it," he said.

John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Clyde Phillips and Charles H. Eglee serve as executive producers for Season 3. Hall, Scott Buck and Melissa Rosenberg are co-executive producers.

That is great news, only for one detail that may fuck things up. The article says they are starting production in Los Angeles? Either they made a mistake, or the fucking writers are moving the show to LA, which would suck big time.

Could be. There are way too many Miami shots, places I recognize, etc... but maybe they do shoot most scenes in LA and some in Miami. It makes sense, as Showtime does not have offices here and they produce most of their shows in Cali.

BTW Season 3 is fucking amazing. It started a bit slow, but its really good now and Jimmy Smits is perfect in it. Anybody watching?

yeah, jimmy smith is awesome, i hated at first that he was in it mainly because it reminded me of the prequels but he's doing a great job. and yes, last night's was pretty good.

SPOLERS ahead

although obviously dex will live, it will be pretty interesting how they handle his escape/rescue and what will happen to miguel prado, guy is out of control and careless, i think maria will get very close to discover he killed that lawyer if dex doesn't act before she finds out. and i hope dex's dad has some screen time in the last two eps....

man i hope we NEVER find out about what happened with dexter, and books and movies are created trying to answer what the fuck happened after tonite's episode. absolutely the best season, which i attribute to a coupla reasons:

-less screen time for rita and her kids and everyone who's not important, really. fuck all those other guys.
-jimmy smits and his larger than life presence.
-this new absolute rivalry between dexter and miguel. someday, i want to make a story about enemies with this intensity and passion. reminds me of 'the prestige'.
-the sequences with dexter's dad create the fictional atmosphere the show needed since the first season. the problem of dexter, a serial killer, 's morality is waay surpased.

will post more when the new episodes come.
thank you dexter the tv show for being decent.

two more episodes to go, but like it says in a post before there are already 2 more seasons in the making!

its interesting to think where they will go. of course we still have to see how this one ends, but so far we have had him showing who he is, then him being hunted in season 2, then him finally sharing his secret now, and what is next? this experience may change him forever. i was hoping to seeing everything go crazy during the wedding.

I'm too lazy to find the link to the article, considering that nobody here gives a shit about this show, but John Lithgow was cast for Season 4. He plays a famous serial killer that relocates to Miami or something.

Season 3 was the weakest, but I liked it anyways and I think it makes sense. First one was about discovering the character, second was him being hunted, so this one presented a new challenge of following his daily life without something so extreme happening, which will also be similar in Season 4. However, I loved Jimmy Smits in this and I think their 'friendship' and all that made the season good enough.

the ending is being a little overhyped.. a lot of people predicted it. if you're going to watch the show, skip season 3. season 4 has been wishy washy but still had some pretty great episodes. i've slowly come to realize lithgow is one of my favourites.

yeah, wonder also how are they going to handle trinity's last victim, that may or not be interesting depending how they do it, also wonder if everything dexter did recklessly this season will bite him back (it should eventually). and it's great that this season dex's father appeared pretty often.

those of us who loved "The Warriors" sure are glad to have James "Harry Morgan" Remar appear moreso often...

My prediction for next season is that they'll flesh out the Dexter/Harrison relationship.  it seems like they skimmed over any interactions that he had with the baby, and with my sister and bro-in-law as new parents, i KNOW that the less-stressed Dexter is gonna find some love for that li'l tyke.

(ok, I say less stressed...I mean in terms of trying to kill someone all the time and running away to work etc, not less stressed in the familial sense)

I do hope this is the last season for Dexter, considering short-&-sweet is what this show always does best.

Julia Stiles in Talks for Dexter
Source: ComingSoon

Entertainment Weekly reports that Julia Stiles is in advanced talks to play a major, top-secret role in the upcoming fifth season of Showtime's "Dexter."

Showrunner Chip Johannessen previously told the magazine, "We're not going to have a single Big Bad this season. We don't want to try and top John Lithgow, so we're going to change up the forces that Dexter's going to be dealing with."

The role would mark Stiles' first major foray into television.

I bought Season 1 on Black Friday. Already watched all 12 eps.

In relation to the buying DVD thread - is there a way I can legally stream these for free?

If I buy the DVD sets, I'm sure I'll watch once and then they'll just sit there.

Spoils

Let me say that Up until the last few episodes my thoughts have been, "ok, how many times is a serial killer going to find himself within close proximity of Dexter and the Miami PD, only to see Dexter get to him first."

These last few episodes are giving me hope that they may head in an unexpected direction.  Don't get me wrong, amidst the redundancy jaw dropping moments occur, but this season is meat and potatoes.

Several friends finally convinced me to watch Dexter, and I've been making my way through it at various paces.

I've always had mixed feelings about the show, and I was fairly skeptical about it in the beginning. However, with Season 3, the quality and subtlety were cranked up significantly. It's like they finally said, "Okay, we're done with the silliness. This is a serious show." Season 4 was even better than Season 3, and I'm now about 1/3 through Season 5, which is really good so far.

Also, Michael C. Hall has held things together masterfully, even through the early stuff. He must rank with the best television leads. He's probably the reason I couldn't stop watching the show. It's a joy to watch him act.

The downside is that by comparison, nearly all the other actors are pretty meh. (This is kind of like the effect Tim Roth has in Lie To Me). Their material is never as good. Too much time is spent with office politics. The stories are rarely interesting enough. More Dexter, please.

But my main complaint about the show is Debra (Dexter's sister). Her endless romantic dramas are even less interesting than the office politics. I don't care about it, and I think I actually care about it less 5 seasons in. It also annoys me how often they try to shove down our throats how attractive she is (really?). Moreso, it annoys me how consistently and desperately they try to shoehorn sex into the show, as if to meet a quota. Debra is the main culprit, but it goes beyond her. Quinn's thing with the reporter was probably the weak point of Season 4.

Nevertheless, I can't stop watching the show, and I have high hopes for its future.

Holy crap was I right... Season 5 was not only the best season of Dexter so far, but one of the best seasons of TV I've seen period. Even Deb's story got interesting, which is quite an accomplishment. They must have hired new writers, new directors, or something, because the quality was fantastic. SPOILERS That scene when Deb was talking to them through the plastic... so masterful, so intense. Also, I hate to say it, but the show is much better without Rita. Until she left, I didn't realize how much she dragged things down, how much suffocation she caused. Not just for Dexter's extracurriculars, but for the show's emotional possibilities. Look what they were able to accomplish this season—they managed to pull new things out of the Dexter character, who quite frankly, with the amount of overexposition that was going into the scripts, should have been exhausted by the end of Season 1. Julia Stiles was pretty much pitch perfect through all the crazy stuff she had to pull off. I think she's the best actor we've seen on the show next to Michael C. Hall. Speaking of whom, man, he had some good material to work with, and he chewed every piece of actorly goodness out of it. I know Dexter will go on killing, because that's the show, but I think some interesting things could happen before the series finale. Key line from the end of the season finale: "They make it look so easy—connecting with another human being. It's like no one told them it's the hardest thing in the world." He's realizing more fully (which we know by now) the artificiality of Harry's creation, and that he is not what Harry thought he was. To what extent he's not is something they should explore next season...

So are we going to talk about this?

I have such mixed feelings about Dexter, but I can't stop watching it. So much if it is crap, and good God is the dialogue horribly-written sometimes, but there are some truly transcendent moments. These moments all have something in common; Michael C. Hall dominates them. Even after all these seasons, he completely fascinates me. He carries the show.

The material that does not focus on Dexter is consistently weak. There are exceptions, but that's the general rule. I'm worried about this season, because it's probably not going to capitalize on the developments that Season 5 made with the Dexter character. In fact, they might pretend that Season 5 never existed. I loved Season 5 for all its intensely Dexter-centric content. I doubt they'll do anything like that this season.

Dexter is good to the extent that it takes the Dexter character seriously. Sometimes it doesn't. This season, it may not.

Oh man, I second THAT.  I used to like the side stories, like back when Doakes was around, or when Batista got attacked in Season 1.  Now we've got "big brother Angel" in some hackneyed C plot with his sister. "You're JUST like DAD!" Oh hah-hah.  In the end, that's what I agree is EXACTLY where Dexter tends to lose it on the writing side: trying to fit in plots for its multitude of characters who they had no plan for in the first place.
Admittedly, though, I'm still a sucker for whatever they do with Masuka.

Positve Points:  I really really really forgot how darkly funny Dexter could be before this season opener.  I really like the idea of people with a code having to stand up to Dexter and his code...not only that but they have GOD on their side. At least they can convince themselves that they do.  I'm not into the whole "mysterious agenda using biblical imagery" thing, but I'm interested to see where they go.

Worst season ever. And uncontroversially, from what I've read.

It's just bad. Worst villains ever, worst subplots ever, worst Dexter introspection content ever, worst Dexter side projects ever (mostly nonexistent), worst everything.

I feel dirty for continuing to watch this. I need to re-watch Season 5 when this is over.

I told my girlfriend that I'm kind of lukewarm on Dexter this season.
It seems like last season didn't really know what to do with itself, seeming to jettison characters and stories with their short window with a guest star.  It was spinning its wheels with every character except for Dex.
This continues this year.

I said to her "I still love watching Michael C. Hall, but that's about it!  I don't really care about any of the other characters right now"

"Fine! I'll watch it alone then."

And similar PolkaBlues, I was okay with that.
and I'm not saying I don't like any of the actors and their previous work on the show, I just don't like their plotlines.  If we just want to watch a performance come to life onscreen despite horrible writing, I watch Dexter or Masuka.  Dexter because MCH is really fun to watch and Masuka because C.S. Lee's character doesn't need to be taken seriously.

Basically, watching Dexter is no longer an event for me.

I call this the Adam Sandler Effect.
How many of us though Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore and The Wedding Singer were all works of comedic genius? Be honest!
And then came maybe some snippets of that same off-the-wall yet heartfelt joy, like Big Daddy, but otherwise....you know what I'm talking about.

I also think of the band Goldfinger, if you guys recall them.
They had a good, fun first punk album that was fast and kick-ass, then a genre-hopping ska-punk album, followed by a contemporary take on 80's music-meets-punk...and then the 4th album hit.  And it was abysmal.

Like Adam Sandler and Goldfinger, Dexter has been flapping its wings trying once again to fly, and despite its twists and approaches to presentation, we aren't going to get the kick-ass Dexter we know and love back.  If and when we do, it best end right then because Showtime doesn't need to castrate itself any further.

I enjoyed the first two seasons but thought the third was incredibly boring. From there it got kind of weird. Lithgow was great and last season was the first time Julia Stiles hasn't annoyed me, but this season is just plain bad.

Did anyone not see that twist coming?

I mostly disagree about that... last season was my favorite by far. Yes, it focused on Dexter, but that was its strength. It had the best Dexter introspection content of any season along with the best performances from Michael C. Hall (which are my favorite parts of the show). Most of that was possible because the show had finally unburdened itself of Rita. It even had the most interesting and most plausible "will Dexter get caught?" storyline, with Quinn and Debra. Sure the bad guy was nothing like Lithgow, but it intentionally diverted from the "big bad villain" formula. What it did was far more interesting. When Dexter brings Lumen into his world, and when she first (with his guidance) sinks a knife into someone's heart, that's some of the most chilling and oddly exciting stuff I've ever seen. What a dramatic contrast to the plainness and inept philosophizing of this season.

You know, I think that's it.  Dexter seems to be thinking thoughts on a subject he is just discovering as if he's thought about the subject his entire life. I DO like that season 5 focused on Dexter, but it kind of let everyone else flail for a bit as characters.  I like that this season is putting Deb to the test.  Again, everyone else, I'm like "eh" now.

I figured out what I mostly see as the differences between HBO and Showtime shows.  HBO will take a society or landscape and focus on it as a character while it fleshes out its characters as an extension of such settings (Deadwood, Oz, The Wire).  Showtime, on the other hand, seems to take one character and then make up other characters in support of their story (Weeds, Nurse Jackie, Dexter).  That leaves Breaking Bad as an anomaly for me then.  I have no idea why I just chose on this rant.  Oh well. Too late.  Must--Post.

did you guys liked the finale?

SPOILERS

the whole season for me was almost unbearable, Dexter has always had a lot of plotholes but this one takes the cake, my only hope for having a better season is that Deb FINALLY knows about him and that could make the show pretty interesting...
Title: Re: Dexter
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on December 19, 2011, 11:22:39 PM
Yes, this season has been tragically substandard, even by Dexter's lowest standards. The finale doesn't really change that, but I still very much liked how it ended.

SPOILERS

I appreciated that they set up the quasi-incest subplot and then crushed it so severely. Clearly the best thing they did all season. I mean really, how can Deb react with anything but horror? Even long-term. The way Dexter was talking, the whole setup of his kill, the way he effortlessly drove the knife into Travis's chest... it all screams serial killer. She must also realize that this is what Dexter is always running off to do, that this is his personal time, etc. Surely she would also put the pieces together concerning mysterious Dexter-related things (including serial killers disappearing) from previous seasons. Which would definitely include realizing that he's the Bay Harbor Butcher (of which the show reminded us just a few episodes ago, in Dexter's voiceover when he talked to Louis).

This has the additional benefit of revealing to Deb that she's in love with yet another serial killer, and even that perhaps she subconsciously knew/sensed that Dexter was a serial killer, and that started all of it. She may even have a suppressed memory of witnessing her dad training Dexter or something like that.

I'm really not sure how they can solve it. Deb is already unstable. Is she going to have a complete breakdown? More interestingly, what will Dexter do? "Deb, I can explain!" Uhh no... you can't.

Any ideas?

My theory... Given the show's alarmingly high turnover of show runners, I'm going to assume the current one wrote them into a corner and is now going to quit.

Also... setting up his kill room in the crime scene was a bad idea. In a crime scene where he knew his sister might expect him to be. Dexter (the character) has been oddly inept this seasons. After all these years working at Miami Metro, is the stupid rubbing off?
Title: Re: Dexter

SPOILERS

Despite not liking this season on the whole, I look back and figure maybe I was just being picky and had a vision about the show that the show itself didn't.
These last 3 episodes were actually pretty cool, maybe because I wasn't expecting my mind to be blown.

The Finale, though, I'll admit, offered a bit of mind-blowing.  Especially the final moments.

Since the first ep., I always thought the beauty of Dex and Deb's relationship is that they wouldn't fall for each other because they're siblings, right? Even adopted ones.  Even as a fan of "Royal Tenenbaums" I didn't want to see this happen.
So I don't really like it, but I do have to give the writers respect for letting it be so gradual and make sense when it came along.

I'll stay on as a casual viewer, watch the Season 7 premiere, and hope that the fans like my girlfriend still enjoy it.  She even admits that her internal commentary on each episode is "Duhr, Dexter kills people. Yay", so that's cool with me.  It'll never be "The Wire" or "Breaking Bad", and that's alright.  It just takes some frustration to get over that.

Title: Re: Dexter
Post by: AntiDumbFrogQuestion on December 20, 2011, 11:53:15 PM
what's starting to really shine thru the cracks of this show are the episodic contrivances.

Harrison gets sick ---> Dexter gets to hear a soliloquy by Brother Sam ---> Harrison is fine by the end of the episode

Dexter almost gets gassed ----> Dexter loses his grasp physically at a pivotal moment ----> Next episode he's fine

I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting about, but oddly enough, another show has done this lately.  The Office has seemed to forget character development in order to try and shove established characters thru "interesting" situations.  Someone knocked one of the supports out beneath the stage these shows are on, one obviously being Steve Carrell, the other maybe the Dexter showrunners?

Anyways, things don't seem to hold as much weight when they happen on Dexter nowadays because I think they feel they can't take any real chances.  They fell back on reminiscing on seasons past with Rudy and Jonah Mitchell in a single episode.

I'm sure there's more I can whine about, and you're right Jeremy Blackman, I am being a bit easy on Season 6. Usually I'd say "What Do Kids Know?", but I think you're spot on there.  I hope Season 6 goes down with Season 3 as the two crappiest times for Dexter.
Title: Re: Dexter

You're right, Season 3 wasn't the best. Just not very memorable. I still really enjoyed it, though. I remember it being a totally welcome shift into subtlety from the insanity and silliness of Season 2.

And yes Dexter after the gas really was dumb. We've never seen this character being this dumb, over and over again, all throughout a season. Part of me thinks it's intentional, to make the final scene more plausible. Remember Dexter dropping his slides early in the season?

I agree, generally Harrison is just being used as a writing device. This quote from the AV Club summarizes something from the finale rather nicely:

SPOILERS

"Regardless of how one feels about the technique of imperiling a child to force the audience into caring about what's going on in the story, it didn't work here because at no point did I feel like Harrison was in any real danger. In fact, at no point in the episode did I feel like anyone was in any real danger, which is a reflection of the season on the whole..."

Just watched the premier, and I was impressed. Dexter could actually have a good season.

For whatever reason, when the show has a plotline that's really difficult to pull off, the writers typically step up to the challenge and bring the show to that next level. Which seems to be the case with this current story. (SPOILERS!) They're handling Debra especially well. It's 100% true to her character. She's disturbed by the situation, and highly skeptical of Dexter, and she has to get to the bottom of everything. Dexter's reactions to her various reactions were also spot-on. It's a good choice to not drag out the full reveal, too.

There were at least 2-3 major plot holes in the episode, but it's Dexter, so I'm not going to let them bother me. (But seriously, unless it was some Lynchian twist, why did they have Deb watching herself on "LIVE" TV?)

yeah, this episode was better than the entire S6.

only part I didn't like is that he cought and killed the ukranian IN A FUCKING AIRPORT!

and the excuse for his needles:

dexter: got diabetes
airport security guy: go ahead honestman face

other than that, this season cant be worse than the last.

MORE SPOILERS

I'm really wondering if they'll continue to handle Deb's complex reaction process deftly. They might be able to pull it off.

She will have sympathy for Dexter, at least on some level. There is precedent for it. Very recent precedent, if you pretend last season didn't exist (which is really best for everyone at this point). In Season 5, she was so disturbed by the rapes and had so much empathy with the rape victims that she was basically cheering on the vigilantes (Dexter and Lumen). And when she eventually stumbled across them, she let them go and essentially condoned what they were doing. I should go back and see exactly what she said, but yeah, hopefully she finds out who she was talking to through that plastic curtain.

Bold prediction: Next season, if not sooner, Deb will be deploying Dexter as her secret weapon.

last week's episode packed a punch, even with the silly "i'm going to kill this guy in a semi-public area" thing.

I think this is a sign that all good television shows should agree on an end game/ "last 2 seasons" type deal as soon as they begin flailing creatively. While last season may have been interesting, if not "meh", many of my friends thought that a sixth season should have been the last. Even if you don't like "Lost", their deal to break only 3 additional seasons caused the writing to become tighter and that oddly enough gave them time to play around more with their presentation (flash-forwards, time travel, etc.).  I hope tonight's episode has us all on our seats just the slightest bit too.

So far so good. Oh, and judging by the teaser for next week (SPOILER ALERT?), it looks like this is already happening:

Quote from: Jeremy Blackman on October 02, 2012, 04:52:35 PMBold prediction: Next season, if not sooner, Deb will be deploying Dexter as her secret weapon.

It's only a matter of time (maybe lots of time, but still) before Dexter's "help" turns darker.

I guess the organized crime thing is decent enough, but I'm more interested in the Louis plot right now. How on earth will Dexter deal with him?

Quote from: AntiDumbFrogQuestion on October 07, 2012, 02:26:24 PMEven if you don't like "Lost", their deal to break only 3 additional seasons caused the writing to become tighter and that oddly enough gave them time to play around more with their presentation (flash-forwards, time travel, etc.).  I hope tonight's episode has us all on our seats just the slightest bit too.

That's not a bad theory. I guess it never occurred to me. (Although, the beginning of Lost Season 3, when Damon Lindelof says the writers felt like they were in jail along with the characters because they were waiting for that deal, is one of the most intense stretches of Lost episodes in the entire show.)

But yeah. Last season should have been skipped; they obviously just threw up their hands and phoned it in. They shouldn't even put it on DVD. Season 5 to Season 7 would have been a natural transition. Season 5 had loads of substance and the best Dexter introspection content of any season. That would segue nicely into what's happening now.

Agreed. There were only four things I liked about Season 6.
1) The idea of Dexter dealing with spirituality. Executed kinda okay, but not seeing the lasting effects in this season.
2) Mos Def's performance.
3) The idea that Dexter isn't the only one whose mentor appears from beyond the grave.
4) Batista and Quinn gettin' high.

I think people tend to underplay Season 5 because it had to live up to the bar of Season 4's suspense and surprises.
I dug it thought. Especially Peter Weller.

Lithgow brought a nice dynamic, but I haven't really been into the show since Season 2. This season has been great though, it feels completely different than last season. Dexter's monologue at the dinner table is the kind of thing this show does well, especially capped off with Deb's "you are crazy" response. It's fun to watch again.

Dexter has pretty much established itself as a cartoon in my opinion. Mostly lots of bad people without shades of grey getting killed. Apparently since it's more convenient for the main character to have a soul, he's got one.
I liked how the finale brings us into new territory, and this was a pretty good season until Jim Beaver showed up playing an AWESOME asshole...he was good in it, just saying, of COURSE he was going to be a bastard. That's the only way Dexter would be able to kill him! Duhrr!
Sometimes this show is like reading an 8th grader's fan fiction. I'll still watch it, about 1/2 the performances are still quite good.

Dexter Is Getting The Ax! Officially Ending After Season 8!

The Ice Truck Killer, The Skinner, Trinity- no one can stop Dexter!

Oh, except maybe Les Moonves!

The CBS CEO, who also runs sister network Showtime, let the body parts out of the bag at an investor conference in Palm Beach on Monday.

When discussing the future lineup for the edgy premium network, Les said:

"We have Ray Donovan coming on with Liev Schreiber, which comes on with Dexter's last season starting in June, and then we have Masters of Sex."

We can only assume Masters Of Sex is a more fun version of Masters Of Horror, but the most important word in that sentence was the one he may not have meant to say — last!

It seems the serial killer serial is wrapping up like one of Dexter's kill rooms after season eight! Bummer!

But hey, at least we have a whole season to tie up all the loose ends! We're hoping for one crazy amazing finale!

- dexter will kill deb and then he gets killed maybe.
- harrison harrison? yeah no sh!t
- we get a bunch of awesome redux flashbacks to doakes and he says motherfæcker a few times.
- this will be the best season ever possibly.
ALSO:
- has anyone ever used 'the end begins' before? not the end of the beginning or vice versa. (sorry for so many tenses)
- deb has gradually bettered her acting over the seasons, this seems to be her peak. and my god she is finally hot. it sucks she had to be stoned to do so.
- the doctor story is already awesome. someone correct me if i'm wrong but we havent seen a dexter enemy as original as this have we?

I'm watching. Haven't watched #3 yet, but it's pretty good, and Charlotte Rampling is the highlight. Meltdown Deb is entertaining and is pretty much the logical conclusion of her character.

I do feel vastly less emotionally invested in the show than I did in say, Season 4 and 5.

How Dexter is going to end is much more difficult to predict than say how Breaking Bad is going to end. Dexter hasn't been building toward anything. Dexter's character arc has become much more ambiguous as the show went on instead of focusing with the show ending. We've seen him kill or be involved in the murder of innocent people so he is no longer the "good guy" murderer as the he was when the show began.

The show has been emphasizing Dexter's emotions and reactions to situations are different to how Evelyn expects from a psychopath. I would guess the Dr would continue to talk to Dexter and try cure him of his dark passenger. While I can see Dexter being helped it's hard for me to see Deb getting better with Dexter still being around. Continuing with Dexter not having emotional coldness of a psychopath, I see the show ending with Dexter having to make some sort of sacrifice in order to help/save Deb. He might have to let himself be put on a table with pictures of his victims. Or Dexter will take the blame for LaGuerta and admit being the Bay Harbor Butcher freeing Deb.

I have two options:

1. he gets caught and somehow manages to run away and goes on hiding.

2. same as above but instead of running away he commits suicide, how? he injects himself to pass out to drown at the bottom of the ocean where most of his victims reside.

I guess I do have one prediction. Notice how Rampling's character keeps remarking with curiosity on things Dexter says or does that are not typical of a psychopath. "Hmm that's strange, psychopaths usually don't express love in that way" etc. etc. Are the writers simply winking at the audience, who know that Dexter does have a conscience and could probably stop killing? I mean we all know that, right? Are they going to blow that wide open finally? They've played with this halfheartedly countless times, but they almost really did it in Season 5, which I found immensely effective. Would they ever actually commit to that?

Woops, I missed your reply.

Yeah, those are all decent options. I feel like something big needs to happen (this is obviously their last chance), but I just don't see the pieces being assembled for anything that ambitious. And let's face it, with Dexter you can usually see the pieces being assembled. This is why Rampling's "omg why are you not behaving quite like a psychopath" bits really stuck out to me. Those moments definitely resemble the foreshadowing we've seen in previous seasons.

I can imagine the show ending without anything major happening... meaning things sort of go back to how they were in season 1.

Or he would die. Not sure if suicide or how... but it will be to save Deb and for her to have a chance of a normal life.

And she will probably end up with Quinn.

And Dr. Rampling will be dead.

I was surprised by the conclusion of the story line. It now seems as just a set up to get Dexter, Deb and the Dr together as a new family. It made me wonder why they didn't do this for the previous season. But this is Dexter and they go season by season and by guest star and guest star. They really haven't been heading towards anything without any thought to anything past the season finale.

I have no idea what is going to happen next. I still don't entirely trust the Dr. She comes off as a overly protective mother to Dexter. It also seems stupid for both her and Dexter's father to think it was fine to record themselves talking about creating Dexter. Maybe the Dr filmed Dexter's father without his knowledge.

There was more set up in last couple episodes of Dexter having to make a sacrifice for Deb. When Dexter tricks the killer to coming to the hospital for his father, the killer removes his father's breathing tube to make his escape. The only thing is that this was all done in the first quarter or third of the season. If they plan to have Dexter sacrifice himself for Deb, will it still be as relevant since the set up was done in the first quarter or third of the season.

I know what you're getting at, but I'm not expecting anything like that at this point. The show has struggled to achieve any kind of elegant complexity since Seasons 4 and 5.

Hannah is probably one of the show's best characters, so I appreciate that. But this entire season is spontaneous and disoriented, like they decided which way the plot would go by flipping a coin. There's no particular vision anywhere. And the production value is possibly the lowest it's ever been. (Seriously, what was with that awkward softcore porn scene?)

I feel like the show is aggressively hinting that Vogel herself is the brain surgeon. This would be absurd, but in the Dexter universe that doesn't make it less likely.

The more sensible candidate is the guy who dated Cassie. This would explain why he (purposefully?) didn't identify Zach from the picture. Perhaps he was hanging out with Cassie to get closer to Dexter.

I thought about that option early in the season but there was a shot of her opening her front door finding a piece of brain in a jar. She would be staging that event when no one was around. But there is something really off about her. Vogul is constantly telling Dexter how he is unable to show empathy towards others but she shows none towards anyone that has been killed. She only shows empathy towards the murderers. That dinner scene weirded me out for some reason I can't pinpoint. Maybe Vogul has another adopted serial killer son and she is working with him and they're both the brain surgeon.

Title: Re: Dexter

Yeah, I was also getting some weird vibes from that dinner scene. It felt like she was about to reveal Titus-style that they were eating human flesh, or she had just poisoned all of them. So strange that absolutely nothing happened. But it was subtle enough that it might have been an accidental result of the poor production value. (That's how good this show is now!)

That's funny, I had the exact same experience. From that point on I also eliminated her as a suspect.

The Vogel hints have been so heavy-handed... It's hard to tell if it's misdirection or hamfistedness. The show is known for both.

You're right, it is more likely that she's working with the brain surgeon. That would actually be semi-consistent and not altogether surprising. She's at least a little nuts. (He could still be the guy dating Cassie. Everyone wins.)

I guess I was expecting some sort of crazy reveal at the dinner scene too. It speaks a lot about the show that the creepiest scene all season could have been accidental.

Speaking of the poor production value. I don't remember seeing a clear shot of the body in Dexter's apartment. I didn't realize it was Zach until after the show when I read it. I don't know how I missed it. I remember trying to think of why that song was playing. Maybe I was too focused on the song that I missed the reveal of the body.

It could be the guy that was dating Cassie. He did give kind of a weird answer when Quinn questioned him.

There are four episodes left and still doesn't feel like the show know how it's going to end.

agree with both of you about the lack of plot direction and the low production value, why did it plummet like that?

these writers could learn a thing or two from breaking bad's, are they just lazy and like fuck it, lets just end the damn thing?

at some point of the season I thought Quin was going to be all over Dexter's activities (ala Hank?), that doesn't seem the case now but if they chose to tell that story I'm sure it would be far better than what we are seeing, also, Harrison has always been useless as a story devise, with no purpose whatsoever in this universe, I can only remember one time where Dexter had to deal with him alone (this season where he goes to hunt Deb's guy at a motel), even now that Jaime moved with Quinn she can have him 24/7.

still hope these last four can give us an interesting closure.

Harrison was interesting in Season 5. Remember Dexter had to drag him around? That was funny.

Season 5 remains my favorite. It's the most exciting and meaningful the show ever was. Season 4 is close, but Rita dragged things down. Ending the show with Season 5 would have been dignified and fairly coherent. Dexter was starting to figure out the nature vs. nurture thing, that he possibly doesn't "need" to kill, etc. That was great stuff. It was even subtle. What an insult to follow that up with Season 6 (the "hello, whore" season).

I like how they started to reprise some of those themes (Vogel realizing that Dexter may not be a psychopath) and now they seem to have dropped it entirely for what I'm sure will be another "Hannah in peril" plot.

well, your prediction came true at least for episode 11 where Dex just couldn't kill Saxon and instead he called Deb, obviously that had to turned bad when the US Marshall showed up and cut him loose just to be stabbed by Saxon.

btw, I thought the finale would be Dex struggling with two nemesis, the US Marshall on one side and Saxon at the other, both good and evil against him, but the Marshall is done (i think) since he was stabbed in the heart.

then there's Deb, she's alive and probably make it....or not, either way Dex will seek vengeance for this no doubt and that may finally be his downfall....could that be his Mike Ehrmantraut moment? (leave granddaughter and save himself). in Dex's case could be avenge Deb or run away with Hannah....

Ill predict this, no fucking way Dex leaves with Harrison and Hannah to live happy ever after, even if Deb dies.

and god, Harrison could take acting lessons from baby Holly White, he is the worst! (mainly referring to episode 10)

This is how poor the writing has been:

Hey, Hannah, don't go outside or you'll be spotted.

Next scene...

Harrison cuts his chin. Looks like Hannah has to go outside and be spotted
.

---------------------

Deb: I need pens. Let me go look in Quinn's desk and find the ring that he's hiding here for no other reason than for me to find for plot purpose.

This has nothing to do with Breaking Bad. It's just bad writing. Too many unnecessary characters (Masuka's daughter; the annoying nanny) that took away focus on the ones that matter.

That episode was horrible. If there weren't only 2 or 3 episodes left, I would have stopped watching the show. I don't even feel like spending the time to write out all the stupid shit that's been going on.

One episode.
Then Showtime wraps the show in plastic and takes it out of it's misery.

Does anyone think that maybe the show would have been tighter if it had brought it's endgame up sooner? As if they weren't already struggling to give characters arcs, they have to throw logic out the window to elongate it's run

Like Season 4? Yeah.

It peaked at Season 2 and a few of the episodes at the end of Season 4 were damn interesting. Also they actually killed my favourite character (Doakes) in Season 2 so fuck this show.

What a let down. The writers did a total disservice to the character. This entire season he was never in any peril or given a threat. I was never given a reason to care.

Probably one of the worst finales I have ever seen.

SPOILERS

This should was never incredible but it did have some amazing moments. First season was great, Ice Truck Killer, Doakes, Bay Harbor Butcher, the Trinity Killer, even Colin Hanks had some good moments. The whole idea of Dexter getting caught, or how it would end was always what kept it interesting. All those clowns at the Police Department had to find out at some point, right? Something had to happen.

Instead nobody found out shit. The last season had no suspense. Nothing about him getting caught, people knowing the truth, him learning anything or making a forced change, or anything fucking interesting at all.

Deb died in the most stupid way anyone can die and I hope she's pissed about that. She was a badass the entire show and died like a nothing. Masuka and the entire Police Department didn't even exist or matter. Quinn? Angel? What the fuck? Nothing at all. Dexter ended up alone with a shitty fake beard suffering in silence. What was the fucking point? If you want to live like that just kill yourself. Or try to change and start a new life with your son. His existence is fucking pointless. Everything he stood for and everything he did was meaningless with that ending.

It was the laziest, stupidest and infuriating ending possible. It's like they couldn't finish this and get home fast enough.

It's strange, but I almost completely lost interest in the show since my last post and had to force myself to watch the last 3 episodes, which I finished last night.

I'm not even sure how to react. In a way it was sort of a bold choice on the surface and I have to respect that, but it was so botched and unsatisfyingly strange that I don't feel they deserve much credit. The whole final act, starting with Deb's brain death, felt like a series of alternate endings from Dexter's DVD extras. Like "these are some ideas we had" or "this is what we might have done." It feels like the actual finale has yet to happen.

Execution problems aside, consider the problematic message. At first glance it seems like they're punishing Dexter, but that's not what's happening. Deb sets it all up in that hospital room scene, when she literally absolves Dexter of all his sins and pleads with him not to feel guilty about anything.

But indeed, as they've been hinting at all season (and as they did in Season 5), Dexter is not a psychopath, does not actually need to kill, and has a conscience. And now everything is weighing on that conscience. When he sacrifices himself, we're supposed to be like "Noooo Dexter, don't! You didn't need to do that! Oh my gosh, he's so selfless!" (Which is morally ridiculous even within the show's universe.) Then when we learned he's disappeared, our reaction is supposed to be "Oh wow, he's going to suffer his whole life, just to protect his loved ones!"

In other words, they didn't punish him, they martyred him. Anything less would have been insufficiently heroic.

The writers apparently actually believe Dexter is a hero. From the AV Club (http://www.avclub.com/articles/make-your-own-kind-of-music,101569/):

QuoteAfter reading one of last week's comments, I decided to catch up on Sundance Channel's The Writers' Room, which features candid conversations with the writing teams behind television's most daring, clever, observantly written shows... and also there's an episode about Dexter. Watching the Dexter writing team discuss the show confirmed all my worst fears about the thought process that goes into creating this world and gave me a new framework for understanding why this show never reached its full potential.

The former conventional wisdom about Dexter's difficulty hitting its stride was that it was a victim of its success; because it was such a draw for Showtime, the network held its creative team hostage, never allowing the writers to start thinking ahead to a satisfying ending. At the beginning of season seven, when Showtime's executives began suggesting the end was near, the episodes seemed to bear out that theory. But by that season's end, it became clear what the real problem was, and it was confirmed by The Writers' Room. Scott Buck and his team are too enamored of the character to create a compelling show around him.

Dexter's writers go to unbelievable lengths to keep Dexter suspended above everything else because they see him as a superhero, a man who has bravely taken responsibility for vanquishing evil in the world and whose only real flaw is his need for human connection. Essentially, they think of Dexter as a low-tech, plain-clothed version of Christopher Nolan's Batman, charged with a vital duty he's too heroic to abandon, and forced to carry the weight of the chaos it causes around him.

Also, this could be the most mindblowing scene in the history of the show:

Did they intentionally edit this scene for comic effect?

Probably one of the worst finales I have ever seen.

I think it's by far the worst finale i have ever seen. I don't think it would be possible to make a worse finale for a show without actually trying to do so. The season has been terrible but the finale actually worsened my opinion of the season as a whole. The best way to describe it would be amateurish. It feels like it was written by a high school creative writing course. I never read Dexter wrap ups/reviews but glad I read the one from the AVClub. It sums up my opinion better than I could.

Why would you put to rest your beloved sister in the same place you discard the horrible people you've killed?

The treadmill incident was predictable and just stupid writing. The execution was even worse. There are moments in the season that just stand out as poor direction/execution. Quinn is having a conversation with "whats her name" about moving to Atlanta. The scene ends with him just getting up and walking away without an explanation. How do you end a scene like that? It's something you don't expect to see in a high level production. In the Finale, Dexter confronts Saxon in the hospital. Angel with officers show up, take Saxon into custody. Angel walks away with Saxon without acknowledging Dexter is even there. He doesn't tell him that his sister is brain dead. He doesn't say "Hey we got him." Again, its something you'd expect to see in an amateur production.

The original Show runner gave an interview telling how he envisioned ending the show. He would have pitched the show ending with Dexter opening his eyes and he's on execution table about to be executed by the state of Florida. The entire show would have been his life flashing before his eyes before he died. Also, the writers may have wanted to keep Dexter alive to leave to possibility of a spinoff.

haha, you may be onto something here, a showtime movie?

anyway.

yes, this finale was awful, even worse than I could imagined, maybe deservedly so to a horrible season, none of the other ''main'' characters got any closure:

- Batista let slip that it was crystal clear that Dex plotted to kill Saxon, wtf was that?

- Mazuka and his daughter, that didn't go anywhere

- Joey just mopped and sided with Dex too

I'm sure we could gather here a better team of writers and plot a better ending, although that wouldn't be a challenge.

I wonder what the actors thought of it...they must know it was a shitty season right?

this is why you don't waste time on a show that is not 100% perfect.

just wait til the walking dead ends in a similar whimper.

Showtime told Dexter writers they couldn't kill Dexter, forcing them to go with only other possible ending

While everyone left the Dexter finale satisfied—having at last seen the story of a serial killer who's secretly working inside a police station reach the conclusion it had been naturally building toward for eight seasons, by having everyone inside that police station still think Dexter's awesome while he goes off to become a lumberjack—it turns out this was just one of several endings the show could have had, some of them possibly not even involving lumber. Vulture spoke to Dexter executive producer John Goldwyn, who revealed that in the writers' room "there were a lot of endings discussed because it was a very interesting problem to solve, to bring it to a close." But there was one solution that Showtime did not find as interesting or as fitting a climax as Dexter sailing into a hurricane on his boat, then emerging on the other side with a beard.

"They won't let us kill him," Goldwyn said of the network's constructive note for the show that was once thought to be predicated on the suspense that its character might end up dead or in jail, until we all realized it was really about the suspense of whether he'd get to be in love or in the lumberyard. "Showtime was very clear about that. When we told them the arc for the last season, they just said, 'Just to be clear, he's going to live.'" With this creative suggestion in the form of a network mandate—which is definitely in keeping with Showtime's insistence that Dexter is Batman, and its attendant hope he could similarly just go on forever—the producers were forced to find some other ending for what Goldwyn called its "very core loyal following," one that provided the only logical conclusion to the story they'd been watching.

Fortunately, it found it in an ending where Dexter's secret dies with the character whose body he unceremoniously dumps into the ocean—leaving every single other person who cared about her haunted by her disappearance forever, yet still believing that Dexter was super cool, despite his always being really weird and aloof (because donuts)—and Dexter is at last able to pawn off his son for good on some poor woman, this time a fellow murderer. Meanwhile, he goes off to live in the woods, having officially learned nothing, but definitely a little sad. This satisfied Dexter's very core loyal following of total masochists.
