Does anybody out there love this band as much as me? I particularly love Clocks, The Scientest, Warning Sign and Don't Panic. I think they're great!
I dont 'love' the band but I like it... I own 2 CDs and the last one is my favorite... and they bring a little bit of talent to our shit-saturated Music Industry
Been a big fan for years. Definitely in my top 5 of bands.
... and I can't believe there hasn't been a Coldplay thread yet.
i'd like to state that i like coldplay...
...but if their next record hits the highest pretentious level i will abduct chris martin.

I'll help you.
I'll third that, cos I'm getting worried.
Love the early EP's and singles. LOVE Parachutes. Liked Rush Of Blood more before I knew that every fucking teeny-bopper did.
"Warning Sign" has to be the most underappreciated Coldplay song. :(
That's a great tune. Really, they all are so far.
For underrated, I'd say We Never Change. "I don't have a soul to save, and I sin every single day".... chilling line.
i don't like them, it hink i have some sort of chris martin allergy

I don't know... it's not really the lyrics that I like.
I've heard good things about the "Scientist" video. Care to comment?

it goes backwards... http://entertainment.msn.com/netcal/?netcal=317
yeah, apparently it's the first time anyone's ever done that.
PS I WAS ROLLING MY EYES AS I WROTE THAT
i got Parachutes when it came out and enjoyed it. although the album has a handful of good songs i thought it was more of a 'song collection' and less a 'cohesive album', although so many debuts are. after yellow became SO HUGE i figured they would probably cave under the pressure and be relegated to one-hit-wonder status. when i first heard 'in my place', it had practically confirmed my guess as it wasnt too exciting and seemed to be a song that could've fit right in on their first album. however, giving them the benefit of the doubt i bought the album anyways and couldnt have been more wrong. they proved to be a better band than i thought they could be. i was shocked when i listened to it and kept playing it over and over going 'this is good. this is really good.' disbelief. now a year or two later they've become one of the biggest bands in the world and i look forward to what they do in the future.
also: i did get to see them when they were touring for parachutes and met them for a few minutes when they signed my cd. it was funny because at the time they were the 'not-quite-as-famous-as-travis' guys, (and where are THEY now?) there were even bootleg shirts printed up that said COLDPLAY that was a picture of travis and someone gave one to coldplay who thought it was very funny. the end of that story is when i saw travis a few months later at the same venue someone had saved/brought one of those misprinted bootleg shirts and gave one to travis who also thought it was very funny. end of amusing story.
I share Phil's allergy.

no, "Green Eyes"

I actually think that might be the worst song on the album.

I disagree, actually one of the best songs.

Argh common', that song is very down to earth and 'folkish' - Unlike most of the other songs.
Also, 'Clocks' is their best song!

This thing desperately needs an accompanying sound effect.
This is also one of my favorite bands. I love "The Scientist," but I don't really like the video much. A Rush of Blood to the Head, the whole album I think, is genius.
As for their EPs, listen to "Careful Where You Stand," because that song is just... really great. One of my favorite songs ever.
I realize that these days, even teeny-boppers love Coldplay--but the thing is: I don't care what teeny-boppers think.
green eyes is one of my favorites as well.
"Honey, you are a rock upon which I stand."
"I came here with a load, and it feels so much lighter now I've met you."
Now come on. That's a lot more genuinely romantic than 99% of the love songs out there.
But it's "The Scientist" that breaks my heart.
Being a Coldplay fan is like being in love with a fat woman . Sure you love her behind closed doors, but tell me you don't feel a bit of anxiety when you're friends start talking about fat women.
BTW, a rush of blood to the head is the best song a fat woman can make.
Thumbs up on 'Green Eyes.' It easily rivals Ben Folds' 'The Luckiest' as best recent love song.
I nearly came close to singing it at my wedding. How's that for sappy.
Alright, it's good lyrically, but it kind of annoys me musically.
I thought it was brilliant how they used Clocks with Peter Pan. Unfortunately they never put it in the movie, but it worked great with the trailer.
Quote from: QuoyleUnfortunately they never put it in the movie
Unfortunately? No, putting that in the movie would've lowered its quality. It was good for the trailer only.
Yeah, I think they wanted to make it as old-fashioned as possible without any modern-day material. I'm kinda glad they stuck with JNH's score.
I definitely love this band when i'm in a mellow mood. The three songs i particularly like are The Scientist, In My Place, and Careful Where You Stand.
Quote from: SoNowThenLiked Rush Of Blood more before I knew that every fucking teeny-bopper did.
That's no excuse... that's just no excuse. Every fucking teeny-bopper drinks water. That's not a reason not to.
A Rush of Blood was exactly what I hoped it would be in relation to Parachutes: a better album. I can't see them getting wanky on the next record. It just doesn't seem like them to do something like that. Chris Martin's a great frontman but I don't see him wanting to hog the spotlight like Bono or making people take notice of him avoiding the spotlight.
today was weird....at lunch, my friends and i were in a car and coldplay was on the radio, then we got to Taco Hut (Taco Bell/Pizza Hut) then when i got to back to school, it seemed like everyone was listening to Coldplay. it must've been a sign. so when i got home, i popped in "A Rush Of Blood To The Head"
this was meaningless, but just thought i'd share.
I just got the 2-disc live cd set. Their music sounds great in concert.
Yeah, it is awesome live (I wish I could see them). On that 2-Cd set, I particularly liked Politik.
i have some bad news for coldplay fans...they actaully suck ass and they are chessy as hell...........no offense but they really get on my nerves and the ugly lead singer has a awful voice .it really sounds like he is sucking a penis violently when he sings.[its so mumbled]..........i think musically they are aaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiighttttt.......but they are being exsposed for the fake U2 joshua tree cover band that they really are........
my advice for the currents fan are to get off the tenny bobber bandwagon and get into something else...b/c whens all said and done and 30 years from now if someones sees a coldplay cd in your collection you will look like a bastard or wosre "an achive of hip pop bullshit"........
Someone's jealous about Gwyneth Paltrow...
Neon, you are so underground when you say things like that.
I hate bands other people like, too.

Half-way through the album. It's decent so far. I'm listening to the song "X&Y," which marks a sort of center of the album, according to the interview that came with the album, and so the second half is supposed to be different than the first.
I just thought it was neat, this whole iTunes pre-order with exclusives thing. So I also get 2 bonus tracks and that bonus video. It was available for download at midnight. Pretty neat.
It's certainly very listenable, but doesn't grab me like Rush of Blood did immediately. But I'm only half-way through. Every song has been pretty good so far and there are a few standouts already (I like "Fix You").
There was a version of "Talk" that was posted in this thread and I had for a while. This song went through a lot of change. The final version on this album is different. It sounds similar, but much of the words are different, it seems like. I've gotten used to the old "Talk," but I like this "Talk" as well.
Worth the money if you're a fan, certainly.
I like Coldplay, but their new song is nothing to get excited about. I probably should buy the album before saying: no longer is their sound distinct, but rather, it's becoming redundant (but I won't wait to buy the album, I'll say whatever I want)
And for Chris Martin to say he wants to pick up where U2 left off, is saying he thinks Coldplay is in the same realm. Ugh, think again.
There's a radio show here on Sunday nights hosted by a music critic called "The Next Big Thing" and they played all of the new Coldplay and White Stripes albums sunday.
The Coldplay stuff is boring as all gettup. There's nothing to grab onto, it's justsozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
The host hated it to.
Experts Decode Coldplay's 'X&Y' Cover

The Associated Press
'Is Coldplay trying to tell us something with that multicolored symbol on the cover of their new album?
Cubelike images adorn the packaging, both on the cover and the liner notes, of "X&Y," the British band's much-anticipated third album that was released Tuesday.
New Music Express asked a number of top art experts to figure out what the geometric figure means. They've concluded it's a 19th-century telegraphic code known as the Baudot Code, or The International Telegraph Code Number One. It was used in teletype machines in the late 1800s.
So, what does it say on the album cover? It says, appropriately enough, "X and Y." The rainbow colors are there just to make it pretty.
A message on the back of the liner notes says, "Make Trade Fair." The band is politically active, and lists several Web sites in the liner notes at which fans can get involved in global affairs.'

Speed of Sound sounds a little too much like Clocks for me.
When they first came out with the hype and Parachutes, I couldn't get into it because I thought the lyrics were a little too simple, and the sound ripped from The Bends. Some time later I did decide to get the album and I think it's pretty good. I like how it was recorded. Very reverb-y, almost like a jazz record. Anywho, when AROBTTH came out, I streamed it through the website and I was just not impressed. The band seemed to be using every cliche' and repeating some of the things from Parachutes. There are two things that are in probably around half of all Coldplay songs:
1. strummed 8th note guitar utilized in Yellow
2. Chris Martin sings the word 'sing' and then hums a melody.
That being said, about half of the AROB songs were pretty good. I liked how they were probably trying to get a Kid A vibe with A Whisper, but I think most fans dismissed that as a weak track.
I recently streamed X&Y through the MTV Asia site.
It doesn't seem to me like they have grown that much.
I read an Entertainment Weekly article that said the band had originally come up with an experimental electronic record, but then scrapped it and kept working on the tracks. I would really like to hear this.
All this being said, I don't hate Coldplay. I just think they have so much more potential and are not utilizing all of their talents.

i know they're not cool or anything and their new album isn't as good as their last one but i just saw Coldplay at Madison Square Garden and it was pretty damn awesome. i hadn't seen them in like 4 years when i saw/met them at the Electric Factory in philadelphia and they've gotten a million times huger/better since then. really interesting to see a band metamorphos like that. oh, and seeing them play the new stuff made me appreciate it a lot more...instantly.

Finally listened to X&Y or whatever the fuck it is called all the way through. Don't like it nearly as much as "Rush of Cold Blood..". The first track is outstanding but for fuck's sake, what is up with Chris Martin's obsession with rhyme? Every fucking song is like:
What if there was no time
And no reason, or rhyme
What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side
That you don't want me there in your life
What if I got it wrong
And no poet or song
Could put right what I got wrong
Or make you feel I belong
:yabbse-undecided:
When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse
When the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace

Britain's Coldplay working on new album
Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin said Sunday his band is working on a new album featuring what he called a quintessential song that everybody should hear "before we die."
Martin and his band spoke hours before the final concert of a Latin American tour that took them to Chile, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.
The band said it plans to return to the studio after a two-year hiatus to record an album that will have a different sound from "X&Y," which has sold more than 2 million copies since it was released in 2005.
"I think for a long time people felt like we were a band in black-and-white, and now we feel like because we have this incredible job, now we can do whatever we like and try all kinds of new things," Martin said.
He added that the record will include what could be Coldplay's best song yet.
"In order for us to get excited about a new album, we have to have one song that we feel like everybody has to hear ... before we die, otherwise we'll be terribly depressed," Martin said. "So luckily with this new record we're going to make, we have that one song."
"I can't tell you about it, but it's basically genius," he joked.
Martin, who celebrated his 30th birthday on a Mexican beach last week, also said he is proud of Coldplay's activism to raise awareness about free trade practices around the globe and support poor farmers in developing countries.
Martin is a spokesman for the British aid group Oxfam's "Make Trade Fair" campaign, and Oxfam volunteers provide information on free trade and distribute petitions at Coldplay's concerts.
The singer said he has hope for the future with less than two years left in President Bush's term. "I think we're all excited, everyone in the world is excited about the American elections next year," he said. "Sometimes it's easy to give up all hope."
Coldplay Go To Church, Say New Album Will Be Blessed With 'Hispanic Theme'
'The sights, sounds and flavors of Latin America and Spain have definitely been infused into this album,' band says in post.
Source: MTV
Coldplay's fourth album is shaping up to be quite the affair: Brian Eno behind the decks, recording sessions at church altars and — apparently — a "strengthening Hispanic theme."
That's according to the bandmembers themselves, who posted a handwritten message on their site detailing the recording of their follow-up to 2005's X&Y, which they're working on in Barcelona, Spain. But before you get all excited for flamenco guitars and paeans to paella, remember, this is Coldplay we're talking about.
"The sights, sounds and flavors of Latin America and Spain have definitely been infused into this album. The band visited Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Mexico earlier this year. Chris [Martin] then came up with the idea of recording in Spain," the post reads. "The music and lyrics have begun to reflect the strengthening Hispanic theme. No maracas or castanets, but a vibrancy and colorfulness that owes much to the atmospheres of Buenos Aires [Argentina] and Barcelona. The effect is subtle but important."
See, subtle. That's sort of been the theme Coldplay have employed for album number four. After all, the "announcement" that they were working with Eno didn't come via some wordy press release, but rather through an offhand comment the producer made in a BBC Radio interview back in February (see "Break's Over: Coldplay Tap Super-Producer Brian Eno For X&Y Follow-Up"). And that news came on the heels of the announcement that the band wasn't working on an album at all — rather, Coldplay were settling in to enjoy "a much-deserved break," according to a spokesperson for their label, Capitol (see "No Five-Year Hiatus For Coldplay — But They Are Taking A Break").
And for their upcoming album, they're even keeping their travel subtle: trekking from church to church, recording on the fly. It's a manner somewhat unbecoming for one of the biggest rock acts in the world and its mega-famous producer, but according to the post, everyone seems to be enjoying the whole "under-the-radar" shtick.
"We've been traveling light — an acoustic guitar, a couple of mics, a laptop and some headphones. We're recording in Barcelona, moving from church to church, setting up where we can: in front of the altar, under the pulpit," the post continues. "We've been playing at the feet of archangels. It's an odd scene: a host of saints look down impassively upon four unkempt bandmembers, circled around a single mic stand, singing loudly together as recorded guitars reverberate around the church. They're laying down backing vocals. Brian often joins them: group singing is one of his greatest joys."
Funny, we always pegged Eno for more of a song-and-dance man. Anyway, earlier posts on Coldplay's site also indicate that Eno's longtime collaborator Markus Dravs is also along for the ride, and that the band has been working on 25 "pieces" of music for the new album. But there's still no release date or title, and Capitol had no additional information about the project when contacted by MTV News.
