:? It had a limited release December 13, which at least gives it Oscar eligibility. And I'm pretty sure Amelie was released November 2001.

I liked Frida and About Schmidt, but yeah, not too many other movies I really liked in 2002. Pretty weak year overall, although I should still probably see Chicago, The Pianist, The Hours, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and The 25th Hour.
So far, my list is...
1. About Schmidt
2. Lantana
3. Punch-Drunk Love
4. Far From Heaven
5. Thirteen Conversations About One Thing
6. Solaris
7. Adaptation
8. Chicago
9. Moonlight Mile
10. 24 Hour Party People

1. Adaptation
2. Punch-Drunk Love
3. About Schmidt
4. Bowling for Columbine
5. Catch Me If You Can
6. Changing Lanes
7. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
it seems that these are all that i have this year... missed a few of the recent releases though... so there could be more.
I really won't be able to post an efficent top ten list til maybe august or july because so many of the films I am still really dying to see (Invincible, Talk to Her, City of God) won't be available for me to see til video. But of all the films I was lucky to see, I can put a good top 5 list up with their being the top three movies being the real great masterpieces I've seen this year and all really could be number one so consider them a tie.
1.) Minority Report
2.) Punch-Drunk Love
3.) Spirited Away
4.) Changing Lanes
5.) Y Tu Mama Tambien

Do top 10 lists mean anything to anyone? Aren't they just things lame critics do?
Quote from: cbrad4dDo top 10 lists mean anything to anyone? Aren't they just things lame critics do?
For me, top ten lists are a personal thing. I use them to gauge whether I've made the full effort to see enough great movies. If I can make a list of ten movies I really loved, I know I've done my best.
1-PDL
2-Adaptation
3-Minority Report
4-Bowling for Columbine
5-Two Towers
6-Gangs of New York
7-Y Tu Mama Tambien
Not much thought into it yet... this is the temp list- haven't seen About Schmitt or Spirited Away yet.
I'm sure more will come to mind later...
2002 was a good year for film. Keep in mind, I still haven't seen Chicago, The Hours, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, World Traveler, The Pianist, Solaris or All or Nothing. But here's my top ten:
un - Punch-Drunk Love
deux - Rules of Attraction (finally, an honest look at college life)
trois - Adaptation
quatre - About Schmidt
cinq - Far From Heaven
six - Gangs of New York (somewhat of a disappointment)
sept - Igby Goes Down
huit - One Hour Photo
neuf - Good Girl (who knew Aniston was this good)
dix - Auto Focus (nice escapist fare from Paul Schrader)
just missed: Storytelling, Bourne Identity, Full Frontal, Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys.
Worst Film: Changing Lanes (ugh)
I WOULD LIKE TO ADD IGBY GOES DOWN AND TALK TO HER SOMEWHERE TO MY LIST.

Was it entirely necessary to spell out the numbers? You're keyboard should be equipped with a number key pad on the far right. I know mine has one.

Oh man your list it a mess. If Gangs of New York was a disappointment, why is it number six?
The Rules of Attraction was an erratic, self-indulgent mess with muddled motives and a script not half as smart as it thinks it is. I'm not sure what college you went or go to, but being in college and having studied and visited many other colleges, I can safely say that this movie is the most UNrealistic, romanticized look at college life. I don't think that was the intention- to portray a realistic view of college, but if it was it was a failure.
Changing Lanes was an excellent film, very well written. The Rules of Attraction was your number 2 pick and Changing Lanes was the worst movie of the year? Please tell me you were on heavy doses of xanax or opium when you wrote this.

You know, movies are a subjective experience. People like movies for various reasons. Don't mean to speak for soixante, just wanted to say what I thought about that statement.
Film is a subjective expreince? I think everyone who doesn't like the movies I like should be shot.
Well, that's one way to look at it.
Cbrad4d, why do you feel the need to attack everybody today? Maybe he was disapointed by Gangs because he was expecting too much....
I didn't mean to attack him, just his top 10 list.
Look, its all in good humor. I do apologize if I was a bit crass. When Greg's site closed I started hanging out at aintitcoolnews, and those people are really mean, so I guess they have rubbed off on me.
I'm sorry, no hard feelings.
nooope. you said changing lanes was an excellent film. apology not accepted.

Play nice, or else I'm going to lock you all in a room and make you watch Jennifer Lopez movies non-stop until you get everything reconciled.

Shortest GT post ever.
It is possible to be disappointed by a film and still put it on your top ten. I was expecting Gangs of New York to be better, but even with its many problems, it is still better than most films. The acting was great (especially Day-Lewis). I guess the point is, Scorsese on an off day is still better than most directors.
My college experience in the 80's was very similar to Rules of Attraction. It seemed like everyone I knew was doing lots of drugs and fucking anything that moves, and sometimes showing up for midterms. I also enjoyed the ensemble of actors that Avary used. I also enjoyed the fact that I couldn't tell where the story was heading at any given point -- it had a fresh, unpredictable feeling to it, unlike most movies.
Changing Lanes was a piece of shit. I hate movies in which the main character can't make up his fucking mind about anything. I thought the whole escalating feud between Affleck and Jackson was absurd. The ending was like a bad TV commercial. There was a final shot of Jackson, gazing at something across the street. I thought to myself, don't tell me it's his wife and kid. Yup, it was. Plus, I don't buy Affleck's character -- one moment, he's destroying Jackson's life, then he has second thoughts, then he does something bad again. I can't believe Michael Tolkin, who wrote The Player, wrote this idiotic script. Plus, Affleck's character discovers half-way through the movie that the firm he works for is really corrupt -- wasn't that done in The Firm?
that review makes me like changing lanes even more
~rougerum
I hate doing Top Ten's, but I think if I made one, "Changing Lanes" would be somewhere in that list for the year.
The best thing it had going for it was its theatrical quality to it, and I'm sure that was no mistake since Tolkin was an ex-playwright. The dialogue was very Mamet-like, which is always a huge plus for me.
One thing I was wanting the movie to do was go further. I mean, I wanted these two guys to go at it brutally. Fight, stab, shoot, anything. The two characters had a lot of built-up rage that I felt never got out by the end of the movie. I wanted to see them just snap. Other than that, the movie was better than I expected.

I included it without hesitation...it's definitely the best recent Spielberg movie...little bit better than CMIYC.
I put City of God as one of the best movies ever made imo, but I am putting it for 2003. With my seeing it only recently and the feeling the tide of what to see in 2002 gone, I feel it can get a lot of better notice in 2003 mentions.
Actually, one movie that I recently saw and loved to death and will be on my final top ten list very likely is Brian De Palma's Femme Fatale. I thought it was one of his best movies yet, and like usual, De Palma is one of the very few directors who have a pure mastery of directing a subject with an understanding. But it never really operated as just a thriller of his that gets mention as being comparative to Hitchcock. There is a great ambiguilty in the film to what some characters really actually mean and who they are, or more importantly, who they could be. Spirited Away was the very best movie at playing with identities in it that was never meant to explaining but really just enticing to the possibilities of what they could mean. With Femme Fatale, I remember hearing so much of the negative on it when it was released and it is nowhere on any of these lists in this post, but I found it to be amazing.

I was just realizing what a great year for movies 2002 was...didn't wanna start a new thread, just wondered if you guys thought the same...what do you think?
The best since 1999, but not as good as.
Hmm, 1999 & 2002, both years with Scorsese and PTA films...
My damned list has changed yet again. Another Phillip Noyce film, too. Rabbit-Proof Fence was mind blowing. As an Australian I expected it to be full of political messages. But it wasn't. It was moving, brilliantly acted, and astounding to look at.
I am just wondering whether to put it above or below The Quiet American, which is also [of course] by Noyce...
