There was a post about some Japanese horror flick on the old board that everyone said was shocking or something, the cover of the video had a woman holding a needle... sorry this is vague, but does anyone have a clue what I'm thinking of? Thanks!
Hmm.. that's Audition.
True story, a friend of mine loaned it to me when I was on a date. He told me it's a good foreign chick flick. I thought, 'hey, maybe it will be great like My Sassy Girl.' It turned out to be on par with finding a two headed rat in the middle of your burger with it's eyes bubbling. As you bite into the head and chew on its brain, you don't realize that you have just eaten a maggot filled animal.
It's a shame you already know it's a horror movie though, because I stumbled into it not knowing what to expect, being met first with a mild romantic comedy drama, and then greeted by... Well, those who've seen it know what I'm saying...
I saw another movie by the same director which was perhaps the most abrasive, in-your-face film I've ever seen, called Dead or Alive. Really quite silly. I like how the guy mixes his genres though...
The director is called Takashi Miike, and in my opinion, he's a genius. "Dead or Alive" may look "silly", but in fact it's a brilliant film. Just think of the opening scene...THAT was the original movie, based on the screenplay. Now think about what Miike made of it. And the final scene is really unique experience...
I know, his films are..."sick" would be the best description. Nevertheless, I have never found a director who dares to make such mixtures between arthouse style and trash. Just watch "Visitor Q". Don't watch "Ichi the Killer" if you didn't like "DOA". Don't even think of it. :)
Have you ever had sex with your daughter? Have you ever been hit in the head?
http://www.xixax.com/viewtopic.php?t=538
Miike is pretty awesome.
i think it's a mexican film. it from the early 60s and not by Bunuel or anything. it was in black and white and was sort of a western, i remember there being a shoot out at the end and the main dude goes off running across mexican desert terrain with his chick, but she falls behind and he keeps on running. the camera pulls far back and that's how it ends.
i really need to know what the title is.. i keep thinking devil sumthing, devil, evil.. it's significant to many latin directors working today so it's not just a random thing i remembered.. any ideas? evil.. dark.. evil..
u hav 2hrs max. thanksabunch.
Well, I don't know the film myself, but I don't know if you know about the IMDb power search or not. It's been really useful for me in the past. I was able to narrow it down to 32 with the info that you gave me, though I don't know if it'll help you any.

Maybe you can go from there. I tried entering stuff like devil or diablo in the title, or gunfight in the keywords field, but that didn't turn up anything.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: And, I know a little Spanish if you want some translations of those titles, but I bet Vile5 would be better at that. Or, you can use http://babelfish.altavista.com/.
woah, thanks dude! just as i posted it i went to power search and did the exact search, i'm currently lookin through all of them but very few hav any plot description or director bios.
i can speak spanish tho, so translation ain't a problem.
i'm thinkin Time to Die (1966) might be it, based on the blurb about the director and his significance to mexican film. also i'm now doin cross checks of films with similar filming locations. eff my feeble memory.
is it EL TOPO by jodorowsky? very similar to some of Bunuel's earlier work...
nah that's not it but u reminded me that's a dope movie.
anyway, thanks everyone who tried. too late now, i'm dead.
do you rmemeber a movie from the 80s about some bad kids who are getting flown to like boot camp (maybe) and then either their plane gets hijacked or they hijack it??
probably just a dream

I really don't think so
Wow, that is weird. I was thinking about the same movie while watching Passenger 57. That movie was cool...just a bunch of kids running around in the plane....I have no idea what the name of it was though.
Remember anybody who starred in it?
yeah wasn't it staring sean austin and a couple other young hollywood stars, and their school was taking over by a bunch of terrorists, and it was up to sean and a few others to bring em down?
Wait, maybe you're just channeling the media frenza of 9/11's 3rd anniversary...

I don't know, somebody asked me that on AIM and I posted it here

When I was a small kid I saw a film (it might be a tv show, like an amazing stories episode or something) that scared the living shit out of me, but I can't remeber who starred in it, nor the title. Anyways, what I do remember and still dream of ocasionally:
It's very dark. big house, a man and a woman, and theres a white statue that looks like the venus de milo. at some point, the they start fighting over something, and the man chases the woman through the house, probably intending to kill her, up a staircase and finds her in the room where the statue is, he runs to her, and she dodges him, and he ends up grabing the legs of the statue and then he himself slowly turns into chalk.
Does anybody know what the hell I'm talking about?
While we're on the subject, does anybody remember a movie about this small school with a female teacher, and the school is taken over by dudes in wierd masks. I think the teacher and her class is kidnapped and then they escape and are on the run from these dudes. I remember one scene where they're in this cave and they have to swim across a river and the tough fat kid can't swim. Ring a bell?

i have this faint memory of some movie that probably came out in the late 80's maybe early 90's. anywho, i think there are a group of kids and they fight all sorts of monsters like werewolfs and vampires, etc.
i want to think there is a scene where a kid kicks a werewolf in the balls.
i want to say there is talk of silver bullets, but i'm pretty sure it's not the movie Silver Bullet with Corey Haim.
does this spark any kind of memory with anyone?
i've been redirected here.
someone mentioned Lost Boys, but i don't think it's that.
i think it's younger kids. i almost want to think they were going for a Goonies-ish angle, but with a horror element to it.

I remember seeing this movie when I was a really little kid, and lately I've just been trying to figure out what it was exactly.
I can't name any of the actors in the movie, nor who directed it, or when it was made (though it's definitely inbetween 1980-1994). The scene which really freaked me out, this fat kid is standing on the ground yelling to these other kids standing on top of a small cliff (who, if I remember correctly, were shirtless and dressed as if they lived in the wilderness). While the fat kid continues talking to the kids on top of the cliff, the kids manage to push this giant rock off the side of the cliff and onto the fat kid below, who of course is squashed and killed. Because of this, the kids on top of the cliff start to laugh and clap.
Later on in the movie (The end?) there's some kind of chase through the woods, and the main kid who's being chased runs up all the way to an ocean, and an older man comes into shore on a boat. And that's all I remember.
My memory is really hazey so I may be wrong on a few of these details but... yeah... anybody know?

everyone i know remembers that scene, if nothing else. it was pretty traumatic.
i've been doing a bunch of internet searching of older tv shows/movies i watched when i was younger. as i was doing so, memories of two things came to mind:
1. the first was a cartoon that aired on ABC i believe. i thought of it when i was reminded of ABC Afterschool specials, but i believe this might have been shown as some type of Saturday morning special. it involved a bumbling knight and a dragon. i remember there was a lot of orange in the coloring. maybe even the knight's suit or whatever was orange.
2. some movie where there is a crane in a muddy pond/swamp that is thought to be a dinosaur or like a lockness monster.

obviously if it has anything to do with movies, specific or otherwise, it doesn't go in idle chatter. if this is a game then it goes in News and Theory, if you don't know where the quote is from then there's many threads this can merge with.

Also, technically, the quote is, "The
greatest thing in the world is to love,
and be loved in return."

I know that I only have like two posts or something but I'd really appreciate if someone could help find out what this film is.
I don't really know much about it other than a few aspects of the plot, or what I remember them to be anyway. There's some kind of lottery, but the people that win it don't get money right off. They have to compete in this thing where they have to find and kill the other people who won, or something like that. I think the last person alive gets the money or whatever the prize is. All that I saw was the trailer for this on a vhs of some movie that I'd rented probably around 5 or 6 years ago. And I think that the title has some numbers in it.
I've tried using the plot search on imdb a few times and never really found anything. I might be wrong about the lottery or something else. Thanks?

Okay. This has bugged me since around 1988, which is the year I saw (or I was perhaps at a dollar theater, which might take us very well into 1989 given the run of) Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Now, the thing is that I didn't go to see that movie, I went to see some either sci-fi or horror movie, there were creatures, and the movie scared me so I went and watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit instead.
What was the movie that scared me.
Try this. (http://us.imdb.com/ReleasedInYear?year=1988&country=USA&&nav=/Sections/Years/1988/include-byreleasedate)
Scroll down. Maybe Phantasm II? Just a guess at first glance, but your flick should be on that list.
Does Phantasm II have creatures? Or some big creature? My memory, though obviously not too clear, is of a creature or something fucked up enough to make my kid mind think it was a creature. The plot I can't remember at all. I want to say that it was in sterile colored rooms, like a space ship or labratory or something. I remember the color grey, a creature, and me being too scared to continue. I went and watched the remaing portion of another movie, so the creature came early or halfway. Not at the very end you know.

those movies used to scare the shit outta me as a kid.
a man and a woman are to share a bed. the dude shows up with a sword. she's scared at first. he explains some story about a knight and a woman who had to sleep together. he put his sword between them in the bed and promised not to cross over to her side.
it feels REALLY obvious and i'm going to want to hit myself in the head with a brick when i find out, but i can't make my brain work.

Hmm.. that's Audition.
As you bite into the head and chew on its brain, you don't realize that you have just eaten a maggot filled animal.
dude, you've seen my sassy girl? now go check out "crying out love in the center of the world" and then congrats you're a total sap!

I will delete this thread as soon as I've got an answer, or as soon as I remember myself....but there was a recent movie in which a boy pretended to saw a girl in half as a magic trick, and she started screaming, as if the magic trick had gone totally awry...only to reveal later that she was joking. This was a flashback, and then the boy and girl meet up as adults later on. I also remember it being a crappy (or at least not very good) movie, but I don't remember anything about it. I'm just wondering, because a script I'm working on has a scene with a girl getting faux-sawed in half, and I want to make sure it's not too similar to whatever film is barely there in my memory.

it is totally not crappy! watch it again, be amazed at how good at is.
Thanks, Mac! It's all flooding back!
I still haven't seen it a second time, but my memories of it are really mixed. I love some of what I remember, but hate other elements. I guess I should see it again to decide.
a middle-aged German man came into the store and said he'd just seen an advertisement at another store for a sci-fi Eddie Murphy movie in which "he's being chased by a beautiful woman in a space ship." i suggested Pluto Nash but he said it definetly wasn't that.

i've been doing a bunch of internet searching of older tv shows/movies i watched when i was younger. as i was doing so, memories of two things came to mind:
1. the first was a cartoon that aired on ABC i believe. i thought of it when i was reminded of ABC Afterschool specials, but i believe this might have been shown as some type of Saturday morning special. it involved a bumbling knight and a dragon. i remember there was a lot of orange in the coloring. maybe even the knight's suit or whatever was orange.
2. some movie where there is a crane in a muddy pond/swamp that is thought to be a dinosaur or like a lockness monster.
odd. talking to my mother today this popped into my head again. i remembered this thread for finding out about Monster Squad, but had no recollection of asking about this..........deja vu-ee-oo-ee-oo!

and of course it's not officially on dvd....
admin edit: fixed a munted quote
so, this (http://imdb.com/title/tt0104870/) had the featured quote on imdb today, and it brought back a FLOOD of memories, particularly my delight in flipping through the cable channels as an eight-year-old and finding out that star josie bisset of my favorite tv show melrose place was in a movie about an eight-year-old that kills his dysfunctional family and his subsequent foster families. in attempting to show this film to my cousin at the video store, my aunt claims she saw a black man in the parking lot with a gun (keep in mind, this is post-rodney king verdict. and my family is racist) and she calls the police. we wait in the video store for over an hour to see the outcome, and the violent movie is deemed inappropriate for the evening.
i know where $27 of my paycheck is going this week...

Hmmm... My guess by that description would be:

I think the movie was about an evil guitar or something. My brother swears there was a scene involving someone getting hurt in a trans-am or Camaro, but I don't remember it.
Any ideas?

Some Steve McQueen stuff? Bullet, The Getaway (both on Blu-Ray)
Okay, see if anyone has any idea what this one is.
I have a vague memory of a Christmas movie I saw on TV as a child. There was a scene in it where a boy wakes up at night, only to find a glow coming from outside his bedroom window. He opens the curtains and Santa's reindeer are all there.
I have no idea what it is. For years I thought it was "........ Saves Christmas" It's no Ernest. And it's not "The Boy Who---" either. I just suffered through that on netflix thinking it was, but nope. Thought it may possibly be "Flight of The Reindeer," but a search on imdb said nada.
This ring a bell with anyone? It's driving me mad just trying to figure out what it was.
You're certain it's a little boy?
There's always Prancer (which was on TV the other night).
Whether or not it has a scene similar to that, I'm not sure.
A good place to get questions like this answered in the main IMDB board - usually it's a very fast moving board and any time I've posted asking about a film it's been answered pretty quickly.
This is the one movie I've never been able to find, and I don't remember anything about it except one scene: A man is eating in a restaurant, and there's a pool on the roof, which sinks down into the middle of the restaurant and has glass on all sides so patrons can see into it like an aquarium. A woman up top strips naked and goes swimming in the pool, oblivious (?) that the guests eating dinner downstairs can see her.
I think that's what happened. Saw this probably twenty years ago. Any ideas?
No idea where you'd begin, but this might be a start:
http://www.imdb.com/search/title?keywords=swimming-pool&release_date=,1993&title_type=feature
That is, if the keyword swimming pool was used for this movie.

I seem to be picturing a movie where someone goes in a house, maybe to a party, and you can see someone swimming overhead in water. You only see a hallway width of a pool above with a clear bottom that people below can see through.

sounds italian right? or american 60s
A shark in an (indoor) public swimming pool attacking people. It breaks through a vent or something to get in there.
Anyone have any ideas where this is from? I'm sure I didn't make it up. Thought maybe it was from Jaws or one of the sequels, but after reading the plot of each I don't think it was. Maybe a cheap knock-off instead then? Anyone have any ideas?

I'm convinced I've seen a scene like that from a more recent film. I even remember the tables at the restaurant. But maybe it was an aquarium, and there was a person swimming in there incidentally. It was either from a gangster or spy movie, or a comedy. But the aquarium/pool didn't "sink down" into the restaurant; it went all the way to the floor.

The closest thing I can think of was the scene from the opening of Leonard: Part 6, but that was an outdoor pool, it only attacked one person, and it was a trained assassin rainbow trout. It's literally the only scene I remember from that movie.
Apparently there's also an episode of CSI with a shark attack in a swimming pool: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1640833/

Seriously, it looks like the same house, but it's probably not, because pool ceilings (and apparently pool ceiling hallways?) are a thing.
Just so people know I'm not crazy, I'll quote from recaps of that episode:

That's the one I was talking about. I haven't seen the entire movie, but it was making rounds on the movie channels and I probably saw this scene.
This is reminding me of another unique pool in another movie - it starts off inside, a woman is in her swimsuit, part of the pool comes into the room, there is a glass wall to the outside and you have to duck/swim under and it opens into an outside pool. There's a good chance it was some TCM Underground movie, but I DVR a lot, no telling.

ATTENTION
i need yalls help with this.
i've been trying to remember this movie for a ridiculously long time, like more than ten years.
tonight i heard one of the songs from it, in something else. i distinctly remember the way the scene looked and felt now, with the music, but nothing else to go on.
i need yall to list any movie you know that contains this song, i've looked up on different sites and none of them are it, and the lists are incomplete as well. any help will be appreciated.
All I can find is The Aviator, a season one episode of American Horror Story, and this movie I've never heard of. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181868/?ref_=_16)
i heard it in the ahs episode last night.
i've actually seen treasure island. it's a really strange black and white noir set in ww2 about the secret sexual lives of some code deciphering specialists. also nick offermans first actual film role. yeah.
i'm thinking at this point that i've crossed over memories of that song and it triggered the wrong thing, because i'm ALMOST positive it's not treasure island. it's fairly difficult to get ahold of, but i'm going to try to rewatch it to make sure.
it's definitely not the aviator.
ps: its a great song, so continue to list movies which have used it, because its awesome and i know its been in more movies than those listed.

i fugged this message up. i should have written the more detailed request here by the look of it. so continuing. when the church doesnt give her the money she kid naps a girl the church is keeping. i think shes the sicko priests sex slave.
the other story is of a dude with a beard who is a teacher who's missus goes off with another woman so he hooks up with a student of hes but flips out when there about to get it on and then later on in the film he gets sodemized by a assassin woman who i think was hired to take out the woman who kid napped the girl in the church.
was a twisted film but riverting
What happens when the head of the church refuses to give it to her?
she kid naps a girl the church are holding. my question didnt get posted in its entirety for some reason. i also wrote there was a guy who's missus hooked up with a woman so he goes off with a student of hes who has a crush on him but he freaks just when it starts getting juicy but then later on gets sodemized by a bounty hunter
Well, I'm pretty positive I haven't seen it from your description. You don't remember a single actor in it?
no. from what i remember the head guy of the church was the only dude id seen in a different movie but have no idea he's name. i was certain it was a tarantino film but it cant be if it aint on the net.
thanks for your reply though. appreciate you taking the time. hopefully someone will know and let us both know and u can check it out. pretty intense
I don't know, kinda sounds like it sucks.
I tried searching IMDb with a bunch of different combinations of keywords, and came up empty. Unless you can remember more details about it, this one might have to stay a mystery.
Was this high budget? Low budget? A crazy foreign film?
We could think about Tarantino-esque directors, but perhaps there were too many to count in the early 2000s.
I'm not sure if this is about kidnapping or kids napping? :yabbse-grin:
Oh! I remember..it's Christmas With The Kranks

thanks for all your efforts guys and trying to helpme out with this but non of the titles are correct. im sure i didnt imagine this. what i will do is wait until i see that 1 actor who i had seen in other films pop up in another film i see and get hes name and go from there. cheers everyone

This is funny. The Millennial version of "The Day The Clown Cried" or entirely a figment of their imagination? I grew up watching a lot of Sinbad movies and knew him as an actor before standup comedian. Though I can't specifically recall such a movie, it seems entirely plausible to me that it would exist. What I wonder is how much these believers have investigated early 90's Sinbad movies where he might've just looked like a genie because that's how he always dressed?
Racist-ass 90s kids can't tell Sinbad from Shaq.
I just rewatched "Something Wild" because of obvious reasons, and that slow-mo shot of Aurdey throwing the gun down the storm drain felt extremely familiar. I feel there's a really similar shot in another film that either inspired this or was inspired by it, the shot just felt way too familiar, and I haven't seen the film in over ten years. A slow-mo shot of a gun sliding down a storm drain, while the shots around are normal speed.
Anyone?
Isn't that shot in Hard Eight?
Bingo!
Turns out it wasn't slo-mo, but it was certainly this (https://youtu.be/ouDAgxBrl7c?t=3449) shot I was remembering.
Thanks :)
Hello everyone, I'm Ady a total movie-a-holic from Herts in the UK. My brother has given me a movie to find and his description goes like this:
15-20 years ago (1997 - 2002)
lad in prison, befriended the prison guard-guvnor
was let out on experiment - with the agreement that he return (game of trust)
went out every day - return by a certain time
got to know this girl, met her every day, got a bit comfy one night and didn't come back, the guard got angry
with him, but he let him off, film pursued in that direction, with him being let out
NOT "The Night Visitor"
Any ideas are a big help! :)
?. the details are different but that's what happens with memories
Elements of the description remind me of Borstal Boy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0221838/).

Pretty sure it's neither of those two films. Thanks all the same though. :)
One more long shot possibility:
The United States of Leland (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301976/?ref_=kw_li_tt)

YES! I think I just found this one! "Red State" 2011 - Reverend guy is played by Michael Parks, who was in QT's "Dawn Til Dusk" seems to fit. :yabbse-smiley:
Nice attempt at viral marketing, Kevin Smith.
I mean, it's as good a guess as anyone's come up with, but it really doesn't fit the bulk of the description either, beyond having an evil reverend character.
All of this is just reminding me that Michael Parks' death was never mentioned in our croakers thread.
Shame on us

Is it Pass the Ammo?
Sounds a lot like The Pleasure Drivers. It's got Billy Zane in it and it bored the shit out of me.
Has all those things you described though.
"The Pleasure Drivers" lays out three separate interconnected stories involving an adulterous therapist, a young sociopath call girl, a vicious lesbian hit woman, a white trash kidnapper, and a brain-damaged ex-cult guru. It's described as funny, sexy, edgy and dangerous. The Pleasure Drivers energetically explores the shadow side of Los Angeles and how it gleefully relates to the gasoline of libido.

My god, you did it.

They proceed to have a strange, hot, funny blind date. Just as things start to get serious she turns back into the first woman, who is now extremely upset.

Haha! 2004!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm looking to figure out the name of this strange eastern European movie I saw back in '97 or '98. It was from a video store, so it's at least older than that. It was in color. From their clothes, it didn't seem that old. Probably not before the 80s, but it's hard to gauge clothing period in a foreign country.
The problem is that it had practically no plot. What fascinated me about it, however, was how they managed to take what would seem really innocuous, even pleasant, like a walk through a sunny meadow, and make it feel fraught with danger. I guess it could have been the music, but I'm not actually sure there was any music at all.
-------------------------------
So, the whole thing reads like a dream sequence, but here goes:
This guy needs something. I think maybe his daughter is sick or something. He can get what he needs by going to this Special Spot in this Mysterious Area, but it's so dangerous to go there that people rarely attempt it, and you absolutely need a guide to get you to the right place. It's this sort of abandoned industrial area that's so overgrown that it's more like being in the wilderness.
So he gets a guide, and they take some day-packs and they go in. It's a bright sunny day: flowers, butterflies – you get the picture. It's really bucolic, but the guide is like, "Walk exactly where I go, and don't stray from the path, no matter what you see." It's implied that you might be killed, or disappeared, or maybe go insane. You won't make it out. Somehow they make this really scary, even though I don't even recall him being tempted by anything that made sense.
Later they get to a sort of tunnel – but it's only partly underground, and there are numerous breaks in the ceiling which let in plenty of light, and the end of the tunnel is maybe only 100 feet away. As tunnels go, it doesn't look to be that daunting, but of course they manage to make it so. This is probably the scariest part of the movie.

They both make it, but every step of the way is tense as fuck. Finally they get to this concrete structure. It looks like... maybe it used to be the ground floor of a parking garage, but the walls are all gone, and you can see the wilderness outside. One part of it is covered in a shallow layer of water. The guy goes and stands in the middle of this water, and silently... asks his question? ... makes his wish? Nothing appears to happen, and they both leave.

The last scene in the film is just a tiny bit with him back at home, looking at his daughter. She's staring at a glass, and it starts to move by itself, as though maybe she's developing psychokinetic powers. Is she recovered, but with weird side effects or something? I couldn't tell from the guy's expression whether he considers this a good or bad outcome, or whether it was intended or unintended.
-------------------------------
You can see how this would be difficult to find any information for, and I apologize for the vagueness of the description. I figure someone out there must have seen it; had the sort of taste in movies that leads one to randomly sample a strange sounding foreign film on a whim.
This seemed like the most comprehensive forum I could find, so I joined up just to ask this question.
Thanks for any help or hints you may have!
Yep, Stalker.
It just got a criterion!

I hope he doesn't get weirded out but I really liked that dude's post. It really made an impression on him. A very popular title amongst movie dorks but this dude randomly caught this film nearly 20 years ago and he was entranced by the images and feelings of the film that he held on to them and described them the way he did.
Yeah, I'd never heard of the film nor do I know Tarkovsky's work very well but his description alone makes me really want to see it.
I feel like this whole thread is just a long con by Criterion to get us to buy some sweet DVDs
the journey to this particular post has been unusual in general but usual for me, which is my style.

QuoteEvery six months I would have my Quentin Detest Fest, where I would stay up all night and go through all the things that were wrong with my life, why I wasn't doing what I was supposed to do, like you're a fuck-up, you know? It actually always, like, helped me push forward. So I was, like, "you're judging your rate of progress by your friends at the video store, and compared to them, you're doing a shit load, but they're not doing anything as far as, like, a career is concerned. You have got to get the fuck out of the South Bay. Go quit Video Archives. You need to move to fucking Hollywood because that's where it is happening. If you run with the fast crowd, you will run fast, even if you run last. By the end of the night I had decided that was what I was going to do."
annd i edited out the typos i made in the quote previously
Someone just asked me this and it sounds so familiar but I can't think of a title:
"Do recall ever seeing a film in which a small boy walks down a very white hallway, perhaps the hallway of a space ship or space station, and as he goes trails a pen or a crayon on the wall next to him?"
