Title: Criterion Discs
Post by: Myxo on January 16, 2004, 01:14:40 PM
For all of you who own gobs of Criterion discs, give me your personal favorites. I'm going to buy Brazil this weekend, and I think I might buy one other Criterion disc. I had a chance to see "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" a few months back here in Portland during a Fassbinder series. I liked it quite a bit. I noticed Criterion released that on DVD.

Other suggestions?

I don't see a topic started for this? I'm asking people for their recommendations on Criterion discs. I don't have time to search through every single obscure post for page "xx" where somebody lists their favorites.

well we dont have time to RE-recommend to every person that comes along wanting to buy things they havent seen, so just take the time to look at our answers for the exact same question posed by someone else.

So don't post anything at all if you don't feel like recommending anything. It's your choice. There are others who I am sure feel like giving me their favorites.

Thanks though..

If you haven't seen anything you're interested in in the recommedations thus far, I doubt we'll be able to help you any further.

My advice, either browse the Criterion website or go to Borders and check out the foreign DVD section (if you're into that sort of thing).  Most of the foreign films are Criterions and most Criterions that Borders carries are foreign films.  Have to know what kind of flicks you like to give recommendations, though.

I bought Schizopolis recently.  STILL haven't had a chance to watch it (work sucks).  I'd go for a Bunuel, just 'cause I've always wanted to see The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, but haven't yet.  The extras on That Obscure Object of Desire aren't that great, if I remember correctly, but that's still an option.  So yeah, don't know what I'm rambling about.  Your turn.

Actually, for the "cheaper" Criterion discs, the Bunuel DVDs (That Obscure Object of Desire and Diary of a Chambermaid) got great treatments.  They feature video interviews with "screenwriter and longtime Buñuel collaborator Jean-Claude Carrière"... everything he has to say is fascinating.  The Bunuel films available through Criterion are all worth the money.

I think as far as introductory discs go for those who want to discover the type of films Criterion are all about, they should start here:

Grand Illusion
Seven Samurai
8 1/2
Cries and Whispers
Rififi
Band of Outsiders

My personal faves:

L'Avventura
Closely Watched Trains
Amarcord
High and Low
Geoge Washington

It's that time again to go pick up a Criterion.

I've saved up, and I'm ready to roll.

I feel like a kid in a candy shop.

Too bad the local Best Buy has crap for Criterion selection.  That is to say, they have very few to choose from.  I've scoured the DVD racks there quite often.

All they have (that I don't already own)...

Last Temptation of Christ
Time Bandits
Scenes from a Marriage
Seven Samurai
Samurai Collection
Hitchcock Box Set

So let's see...from that selection, what would you pick up if you were me? (and had 50 dollars, so that nixes out the last two)

Post by: ono on August 24, 2004, 05:50:59 PM
If your town has a Borders, skip Best Buy's crappy selection and go there.  Now THAT is a candy store.  Barring that, go with Seven Samurai or Scenes from a Marriage.

Neon, I read your post too late as I decided to end my anticipation.

(Does anyone else get as exceedingly happy to unravel the Criterion?)

So, I decided not to go to Best Buy.  Because, as I stated, the selection was ass.

I went to Suncoast instead (because the selection is...worse, yeah I know, but they're different).  So at Suncoast they had...

Last Temptation
Seven Samurai
Knife in the Water

and of course, the DVD I've wanted ever since I knew what Criterion was.  I had always admired it, and it seemed unattainable due to it's $39.99 price tag, but ladies and gentlemen, I am now the proud owner of

8 1/2.

And I have to say, it feels great.

I started watching it with my mom (who had the weirdest look on her face when he was like "Be more...more...slutty.")  I had to watch it, and she was in the room.  Oh, this movie blows my mind.

So, Neon.  My next film will definitely be LTOC.  Thank you for your suggestions and evaluations.

Why did I miss this wonderful  chat about beers? Oh right, I don't buy many DVD's these days.

Fernando,  my brother,  amen. Pacífico is the mother of all beers. It is from the town I'm from  and the brewery is next to my grandmother's house. That equals cheap beer.  You get  1L of beer for less than 80 cents of a buck.

Another personal mexican favorite:

Blind buying is what I prefer to do, and I don't know why.

Most rental places around here have shitty selection.  It's not like I have that much money to just blind buy whenever I feel like it, though.

I skip a lot of meals for the sake of films I've never seen.  I'd stop my system as soon as it stops working (so far, I've found a lot of great directors this way)
