Title: Friday Night Lights
Post by: RegularKarate on October 10, 2006, 07:57:24 PM
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Friday Night Lights yet.
I haven't actually been able to catch a full episode yet, but the majority of the pilot and second episode and it's pretty promising.  The writing is just okay, but it's really well made.  It's going to piss a lot of people off because of the shaky camera work, but it's really well edited (the pacing is fantastic) and the music choices they've been making are a little surprising (Obviously Explosions in the Sky, but also TV on the Radio and a few others I can't remember right now).

The acting is pretty natural too.

I saw some of the pilot and said to myself, Isn't this just the movie all over again?

Yes, exactly.  But that ended with the pilot.  The second episode proved that it's not just a rehash.  If anything, the show is better -- richer, more real -- than the movie was.  And all of the teen actors are better.

I guess nobody (looking at the ratings) watched this show, but I hope it gets a chance.  It really is worth following through on.

Friday Night Lights Gets a Full Season... [RK Creams His Pants]
Source: NBC

NBC has given a full-season order for 2006-07 to its critically hailed freshman drama "Friday Night Lights" (Tuesdays, 8-9 p.m. ET), it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment.

"We're proud to reward an authentic, poignant series like 'Friday Night Lights' with a full-season order, demonstrating our confidence in it's appeal and quality," said Reilly. "Television critics and devoted fans have supported the show with well-deserved praise for the executive producers, writers and exceptionally talented cast."

Inspired by the book and the film Friday Night Lights, NBC's poignant series centers on the small rural town of Dillon, Texas, where the coveted state football championship rings are held in the highest regard. Dillon's promising high school team, its star quarterback, and newly appointed head coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler, King Kong, "Grey's Anatomy") continually feel the mounting pressure of the town's pride and honor riding on their shoulders as soon as the Panthers' new football season kicks off.

The strong cast also includes: Scott Porter as the severely injured team captain and first-string quarterback Jason Street; Gaius Charles as feared running back Brian "Smash" Williams; Taylor Kitsch as running back Tim Riggins; Connie Britton as Taylor's supportive wife, Tami; Zach Gilford as third-string quarterback Matt Saracen, and Minka Kelly as Lyla Garrity, Panther cheerleader and Street's girlfriend.

Also starring are: Aimee Teegarden as Coach Taylor's daughter, Julie; Adrianne Palicki as Tyra Collette, and Jesse Plemons as Landry Clarke.

The series is executive-produced by Peter Berg (the film Friday Night Lights, The Rundown), who also wrote and directed the pilot, as well as Brian Grazer (The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind), Jason Katims ("Roswell"), David Nevins ("Arrested Development," "24") and Sarah Aubrey (Bad Santa, The Kingdom). "Friday Night Lights" is a production of Imagine Television, NBC Universal Television Studio and Film 44.

Oh, fuck yeah.

Thank god NBC is desperate to become respectable again.  Last year, they would have dumped it after three weeks for "Celebrity Deal or No Deal", or some such nonsense.

It's about time we gave a whole thread to this show (even though me and RK might be the only people in America who watch it), because it went and became the best drama on network TV.  There is not a weak character, a weak actor, or even a weak line of dialogue on this show.  Free television has not given us a drama this real and this emotionally satisfying since Evan Rachel Wood made me cry in the last season of "Once and Again" (and that's including "Lost", which loses a few points for inconsistency).

Yesterday's episode was a revelation; not just better than the other shows on TV, but better than any movie in the theaters right now, and better than any movie nominated for Best Picture this year.  The people who make shows like "One Tree Hill" should make sure they don't have any loaded guns in the house when they watch "Friday Night Lights", because if I were them, I would kill myself.  If you can watch the show but don't, you're an idiot.  There will be a special room reserved in Hell for you, where "Criminal Minds" and "NCIS" play on an endless loop, and Satan plays billiards with your testicles.  It's that good, is my point.

i'm tired of shows being overrated. it seems like every other show is going to redeem mankind as soon as ppl start watching, Friday Night Lights, The Wire, Weeds, The Office US --- not to mention the ones that ppl do see, Curb, Lost, and ones that are mercifully dead, AD, or sadly dead, Wonder Showzen. and then there's a whole heap of brilliant shows no one ever mentions cos they're not shown in america - all the stuff Garam keeps pushing, and for my part i'll say anything by John Safran, especially John Safran Vs God. oh and then there's the shows still getting rediscovered, Freaks and Geeks, and the walking undead corpses of previously great shows, The Simpsons, and the resurrected saviors, Futurama. and many more to come i'm sure.

so yeah, it looks like we're in the golden age of television judging by what no one is watching. either that or some ppl here are overrating hardcore.

I wouldn't mind since those shows use a steady-cam and hold their focus.

man, sometimes i just cringe watching this show. some episodes are good, but others are like bad after-school specials...the whole steroid subplot was just tough to watch. come to think of it, any scene/story involving the tailback is terrible...that kid sucks.

the problem is, some of the stories are interesting (the qb in the wheelchair, his lady, the new qb and the coach's daughter) and some are worthless (anything involving the tailback, the lame story with the fullback and his dad, and that weird waitress girl who has seemingly no connection to any of the characters other than to pop up on the fringe of a story from time to time). the good stuff is good (and has kept me watching for the most part), but the bad stuff is really, really stupid.

and don't even get me started with the horrible football scenes. every play involves the qb, the fullback and the tailback...that's it. if it's a passing play, well, the fullback just splits out and becomes a receiver. a trick play with a bunch of laterals? the qb pitches to the fullback, who pitches to the tailback, who then throws it to the qb! man, would it be easy to defend that team!

haha, i guess i can cross this one from the illustrious list. now we need a real drug dealer, or drug dealer fan, to discredit Weeds. and a real mad cunt to discredit The Wire.

Except that this show isn't for people who like football.

Complaining about the football scenes in Friday Night Lights kind of makes you sound like Nelson after seeing Naked Lunch.

note, I'm not saying this show is "Naked Lunch" good.

or like that.

i'm not saying it destroys the show (the kid playing the tailback does his best to do that), but the football scenes can be embarrassingly bad. i'm not looking for spot on, perfect authenticity, but something resembling reality would at least not distract from the show. thankfully, the games aren't the focus of the show.

NBC orders 6 more 'Lights' scripts
Source: Hollywood Reporter

NBC's "Friday Night Lights" are shining brighter.

A day before the freshman series' season finale, the network ordered six additional scripts of the critically praised but low rated series.

While this is short of the early second-season order NBC recently bestowed on another acclaimed but ratings-challenged freshman series, comedy "30 Rock," the additional script order strengthens "Friday'"s chances for a return next season.

"Friday" is the second NBC series on the bubble to receive a six-script order this week, following a similar pickup for veteran "Medium" Monday.

NBC renews 'Friday Night Lights'
Low-rated football drama gets 2nd season

"Friday Night Lights" has scored a second season from NBC.

Also Thursday, the Peacock firmed up its drama plans for next season, giving the go-ahead to four new hourlongs: "The Bionic Woman," "Chuck," Journeyman" and "Life."

The "Friday Night Lights" touchdown came in the fourth quarter with just seconds left on the clock. News ends weeks of speculation over whether the critically acclaimed but low-rated show would pull off a last-minute Hail Mary.

The stats weren't stellar for the primetime pigskin player after all. Season to date, "Friday Night Lights" has averaged only a 2.3 rating/6 share and 6.1 million viewers overall. With those low numbers, an order for "Friday Night Lights" wasn't guaranteed.

But NBC Entertainment prexy Kevin Reilly has championed the show as part of NBC's "first be best, then be first" mantra -- and the net already renewed another highly praised but low-rated skein, the Tina Fey laffer "30 Rock."

Net wasn't ready to officially confirm the order Thursday -- preferring to make the grand reveal during its New York upfront presentation Monday -- but is expected to order a full 22 episodes of the drama. Move is sure to spur a spate of high-fives among the nation's TV critics.

NBC Universal TV Studio and Imagine TV are behind "Friday Night Lights," which comes from exec producer Peter Berg (who wrote and directed the feature on which the show was based), as well as Jason Katims, Brian Grazer, David Nevins and Sarah Aubrey. Kyle Chandler stars as coach Eric Taylor in the show set in the world of small-town Texas high school football.

"We were confident but all experienced enough to know that anything can happen," Berg said of the show's prospects. "It was never a sure thing. All I can say is that Kevin Reilly and Jeff Zucker are men of their word."

Berg said he was told that "Lights" will most likely air later than its current 8 p.m. slot -- a move the producers have been advocating.

"Lights" already received a six script order last month, giving the show's writers an early jump.

NBC "hasn't asked for any changes," Berg said. "They've embraced the personality of the show. Hopefully, we can continue to grow."

"Friday Night Lights" also stars Connie Britton, Scott Porter, Gaius Charles, Taylor Kitsch, Zach Gifford, Minka Kelly, Aimee Teegarden, Adrianne Palicki and Jesse Plemons.

As for the new pickups, "The Bionic Woman," from exec producers David Eick, Glen Morgan, Jason Smilovic and Michael Dinner, stars Michelle Ryan as a woman remade into a techno wonder (on a show itself remade from a 1970s hit). NBC Universal TV Studio produces.

Josh Schwartz is behind "Chuck," a spy comedy/drama that stars Zachary Levi as a regular guy who accidentally learns government secrets. Warner Bros. TV produces; Schwartz and McG exec produce.

"Journeyman," from 20th Century Fox TV, centers on a man (Kevin McKidd) who travels through time to right wrongs. Kevin Falls and Alex Graves exec produce.

"Life" stars Damian Lewis as a wrongly imprisoned cop who decides to take his old job after he's released from prison. NBC Universal TV Studio is behind the show, exec produced by Rand Ravich and Far Shariat.

Comedy pilot producers were still waiting by the phone Thursday, but sure shots appeared to include "The I.T. Crowd." Other laffers said to still be in contention included "Lipshitz Saves the World."

'Friday Night Lights' gets a welcome reception
Source: Los Angeles Times

Been jonesing for some "Friday Night Lights"? Here's a little second-season scoop picked up this afternoon at the NBC panel for the low-rated critical darling:

We will encounter our favorite Dillon high schoolers eight months after we left them. Coach Taylor (Kyle Chandler) will be in Austin, Texas, coaching college football. His wife, Tami (Connie Britton), is about to give birth in Dillon. Their 16-year-old daughter, Julie (Aimee Teegarden), is raising some serious teenage hell. Jason Street (Scott Porter) has graduated but is coaching for the Dillon Panthers. Something will happen with Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) and Landry (Jesse Plemons) that will tie them more "intimately" together after the man who tried to rape her reappears. Everyone else is still in high school, playing football and hooking up.

Even though NBC has vowed not to promote the show as a "football drama" anymore — even NBC sports honcho Dick Ebersol complained at a session Monday that this is a disservice to the show — the writers will not keep football out of the fold, assured show-runner Jason Katims.

"The show itself as a show — the network has been so supportive of the show since the beginning ...we're not really trying to change the show," Katims said. "We're not saying it's not a show about football. We think it's a show for everybody. It's been a challenge for women to know that they would also like the show."

If you've never seen it, the DVD hits stores on Aug. 28. And a soundtrack is coming soon. The second season begins at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5.

Go Panthers!

I feel that the confusion of who directed the film hurt Reed's career in the long run when most people think of The Third Man they think of Orsen Welles and it being more of a Welles film than anyone else's. But Reed was an amazing director and he proved that with Odd Man Out and The Fallen Idol. But with the fame of The Third Man mostly going to Welles it makes it harder for Reed to be recognized today as the genius that he was... For Reed, The Third Man was his Citizen Kane.

And I heard that Criterion is Reissuing The Third Man and I hope "Shadowing the Third Man" will be on the disc.

I'm looking forward to this show.

I purchased the DVD based on multiple sources of praise, but specifically Patton Oswalt's - for some reason.

I've watched one episode... it's a pleasurably sneaky little show. Everyone seemed a little too "television pretty" to be taken serious at first. The cinematography seemed good, but a little too aware of itself. Like it knew what "art" was supposed to look like and was attempting to recreate it.

Then the show actually progressed and people interacted. Sometimes even the best network shows seem to have moments of soap-opera cliche, but I think that's more due to the medium and network executives impatience. Plus, all those little moments were outweighed by other moments that were much, much more involving and interesting. Then, even the cinematograohy that I criticized too early displayed a wonderfully intuitive quality for a television show.

Plus, it kind of reminds me of The Last icture Show, which is never a bad thing.

This is only based on one episode, of course, but I do look forward to watching the rest.

well, the whole season at 20 bucks is pretty damn good... considering heroes, 30 rock and others sell for 50, and the sopranos sells for 90! i think nbc is trying whatever possible strategy to get people to start watching this... maybe some people dont mind paying 10 bucks and getting a few episodes and then they can get the rest... especially (and not in a bad way) people who shop at wal-mart.

I'm very excited about NBC renewing this one... its geeky but I'm one of the ones who donated to save the show (sending thousands of mini-footballs to Ben Silverman's office. The show is really excellent, the acting is probably one of the best on TV these days, and the characters are great. Season two wasnt as good as one because it got cut in half, but hopefully it will be great when it comes back in the fall.

I've casually watched and liked a few episodes on TV, so I rented Season 1 and 2.  Truthfully, without overrating the show, it's extremely well-made entertainment.  Season 1 was outstanding, and I'm about to start Season 2 tonight.

The fans of the show probably know this, but Season 3 is supposed to run on DirecTV and then rerun on NBC a few days later from the premiere.  Its an awkward situation, but at least it got renewed.

Season 2 is excellent as well, although it was cut short cause of the Strike. It's only 14 episodes I think and its clear that many stories were left hanging.

The DIRECTV is a weird move but at least it got the show renewed, which is better than not having it. I dont have DTV but I'm sure the episodes will be available for download immediately anyhow.

Also, for the ones who care, SPOILERS for Season 3, Smash and Jason Street will NOT be regulars this season. Because they supposedly finished high school and are in college already, they have 'moved on'. So they will be part of the show in some recurring episodes but not as regulars.

Some BIG news and SPOILERS on the new season of FNL

NBC and DirecTV just hosted a little luncheon with the cast of TV's best drama series, Friday Night Lights, and as entertaining as it was, it was nothing compared to dessert: Shortly after the press conference, exec producer Jason Katims got into a huddle with a few select journalists and basically outlined his plans for the entire third season. Warning: Major, life-altering spoilers are below!

* If you're having a tough time coping with the impending loss of Gaius Charles' Smash and Scott Porter's Jason, wait until next year: Katims reveals that Tim (Taylor Kitsch), Matt (Zach Gilford), Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) and Lyla (Minka Kelly) are all entering their senior years this season. The knowledge that this may be their final year in Dillon will "add an urgency to [their] stories, but also a nostalgia." "It will be sad to leave," says Palicki, "but I think we were all kind of prepared for that on some level."

* When the new season starts, eight months will have passed since the Season 2 finale, placing the action at the start of a new school year. Among the major developments: Tim and Lyla are now in a serious relationship. "We think it'll be a tremendously fun storyline, which could ultimately become very moving," Katims says. "It's one thing to have this passionate, secret relationship, but once they're in a real relationship, they see how different they are. They're completely an odd couple... Also, they're both seniors now, so it's really a question of, Where are they going now? Where are they headed? Lyla really tries to get Tim to be the best version of himself. (She wants him to) get into college, get a scholarship... But the question is whether these two are destined to have very different lives."

* The hiatus has not been nearly as kind to another Dillon super-couple: Tyra and Landry. "Tyra in the past eight months has [realized] that, while she loves Landry, she kind of feels like he's not really The Guy," says Katims. "So it becomes a story about, Are they going to be able to be friends? And will Landry be able to accept that?" Probably not when he meets the new Guy in her life, but more on that below.

* Matt and Julie will try and put the past behind them and become friends.

* As previously reported, Tami will be appointed the principal of Dillon High. "From the beginning, we wanted to find ways to get (Connie Britton) driving story as much as possible, and not just be the coach's wife," says Katims, adding that the new gig will lead to some serious tension at home. "Suddenly she (and Coach Taylor) may find (themselves) on opposite sides of some issues."

* Katims concedes that it was not easy placing the calls to Charles and Porter informing them that their runs on the show were coming to an end. "It was very hard to break the news to them," he admits. Smash and Jason, however, will be going out with "two of the most powerful storylines" this season. "We are not doing this in any unceremonious way. And, also, we want to very much leave the door open for both of them to come back to the show."

* A handful of new characters will be introduced, including a freshman named J.D. McCoy. "He's a phenomenal quarterback," Katims explains. "In the first arc of the season, there's a controversy over who will be the first-string quarterback for the Panthers." Additionally, an old friend of Billy Riggins' will make a play for Tyra. "He's a local rodeo star, so he's right in Tyra's wheelhouse. So Landry is not going to be (happy)."

* Matt Czuchry (Chris) and Benny Ciaramello (Santiago) will not be back.

* A renewed focus will be placed on the Landry/Matt friendship, a relationship Katims says got sidelined last season in the wake of the Landry/Tyra murder plot. "With that intense, secret thing between Landry and Tyra, we lost a little bit of Landry as Matt's buddy/sidekick/friend, and we're going to have that back."

You should watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do you remember a country band playing in the upcoming NBC episode?

I saw that James Hand - an Austin classic country artist - is supposed to be on it. Of course, he may be under a made up name for all I know.

YES!

I'm very excited about this because I think Peter Berg wrote/directed the premiere and they said it had the same feeling as the Pilot did, which was genius. I haven't seen it yet cause I had a crazy week traveling but I will this weekend. Downloading it of course, I don't have Directv.

This is such an amazing show. I love it.

I was thinking that I have the feeling Saracen's grandma is gonna die soon. He will end up going to that school in Chicago or something. I have no basis for this but I feel its coming.

I got two more episodes to go in season one and it's a pretty good show. I thought it was SPIKEtv type garbage, but it's more HBO.

The episode where Matt and Julie are going to have sex was the best. Matt says, "does this mean we don't have to have sex?" haha.

And it keeps getting better.  There are a few stumbles early in the second season, but it recovers nicely.  The third season is perfection, and the fourth season is equally great so far.

Minka Kelly is really pretty. Just stunning.

I just got to the part where coach Taylor takes that college football job. Turned it off because I want to watch the last two eps of the season tonight at home with some beers. I've been watching them on my iPhone at work. They're available to stream instantly on netflix. The first season at least.

I'm glad this thread is alive and you guys are starting to watch and get into it. This is by far my favorite show and I love every minute of it. Each episode is perfect and the characters are great.

I've never seen another show where they close arcs for characters so well and they introduce new characters also without making it abruptly so that everyone hates them.

Is this show done? What's the deal? This season has really been great but they haven't shown a new episode in over a month, it seems.

The last two episodes of season three coupled with the first episode of season four could be called perfect.

Supposedly there was a new episode tonight, so it should be hitting the torrents in a day or two.  And I totally agree with you; the second-to-last episode of season three in particular is as good as television gets.  It makes me sick that people still lump this show in with One Tree Hill.

Mad Men schmad men. This is my favorite show right now.

I recently caught up with this over Christmas. I don't know where they found all of these kids but I'd put this ensemble up against any other tv cast in the past decade. It's one of the most honest portrayals of high school I have ever seen. So compelling and authentic and well-written and not overdone and sweet and just totally awesome.

My only real beef (and perhaps this is the stumble you're referring to Polka, or perhaps not) is-

spoilies....

When Tara and Landry kill the rapist, and the subsequent police investigation. Felt very movie of the week and out of place.

I can't wait for the season 4 finale, and the inevitable Lion/Panther showdown (and by the way, what a ballsy and awesome move they made at the start of season 4! This is a perfect example of how a show can take a new turn without jumping the shark).

Oh also, I just found out two of the writers on season 4 (Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald) are long-time writers on Weeds, my other favorite show. And I remember in an episode in season 5, alanis morissette's character tells Andy on their date she'd rather curl up in her PJs and watch a box set of FNL. Hah.

That's the one.  They handled it as well as they could have, and they wisely moved on from it like it never happened, but the whole thing felt like something out of an entirely different show.  The only upside was we got to see lots of Glenn Morshower as Landry's dad.

Thanks.

Pretty lackluster episode but it's all building up to an epic finale. You know the E. Dillon is going to play the Panthers this season. I just wonder how it's going to happen. Is E. Dillon going to be terrible all season or do they get good and play the Panthers in a meaningful game? Can't wait to find out. Also, I hope Matt comes back. He helped make this show genuine. I can't wait to see where this seasons ends up.

Kyle Chandler is so good in this show, it's easy to forget how forgettable he's been in everything he's ever done before this show.  He's so tuned into the character, there's never a false moment or bad choice in his performance.

Other shows you would assume things work out at the end, but not here. Anything can happen. I think something good will happen though cause this season has been depressing and nothing worked the way it was supposed to, so the Taylor's need a break and the Panthers need to miss the Playoffs and fire the coach.

The Riggings thing looks pretty bad though.

Yeah, this isn't the end for sure. The 5th season is confirmed and shoots in June. That one though its pretty much confirmed also to be the last one and it will premiere on DTV in October.

As good as some of the new characters are, I think its good that they start closing the story now that most of the regulars are gone. Obviously Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton are the heart and soul of this, but with no Tim Riggins, no Saracen, etc it is definitely not the same.

Honestly, I'm dying to come up with a good pitch for a new series and take it to Kyle Chandler. It's tough to imagine him as another character that is not Eric Taylor right now but that dude can act.

So because, and only because, of you guys I've started watching this show. And i'm pretty much hooked. It can get SOOOO fucking cheesy though and feel like something straight out of Dawson's Creek but Kyle Chandler is so fun to watch and am genuinely interested in what happens to these characters. What's the best season? Does is get monumentally better from here? I hope so. I'm gonna stick with it.

funniest/most ironic part so far:

Riggins is bullshitting with his dad and says something to the effect of "So what do you think of Parcells is he gonna stick around?" To which his dad replies "Parcells? Screw that. The cowboys? Might as well root for the Saints."

haha

Season 2 was weak compared to the others and it also had the writers strike so they had to cut it short, but its still good. The first one is probably the best season overall, but 3 and 4 are excellent as well. One of the few examples of a show that may get better with time instead of jumping the shark.

I'm with Stefen.  Season 3 was non-stop amazing, and the last few episodes of it were probably the strongest of the series overall.
Title: Re: Friday Night Lights
Post by: Stefen on February 15, 2010, 12:17:33 AM
Is it confirmed that there will definitely be a season 5? I hope so.

I think it will set up the ultimate Lions Vs Panthers season with both teams being good and it would be interesting now that Tammy is teaching at E. Dillon.

Who's going to come back? You gotta have Riggins since he's almost the heart and soul, but he's in the slammer, it appears. Gotta have Matt and Julie too but I don't know if that would work. Would it just focus on the E. Dillon characters like Vince, Luke (prob. my fave new character) and Jess?

Whatever it is, I'm sure the writers will do the right thing. They always do.
Title: Re: Friday Night Lights
Post by: Kal on February 15, 2010, 12:25:22 AM
Sorry to rain on your parade but neither Matt or Riggins is coming back for the final season. They are hoping to get them for a couple of episodes, but its unlikely. Matt is gone almost for sure and Riggins may have a two-three episode closing arc like Street and Smash had last season.

I'm sure they will come up with something great. They always do. I think the new characters were great this season, but I was surprised we didn't get to see much of JD McCoy. After the first episodes when he was a total douche and we thought the rivalry between him and Matt or Luke would become more evident, he just disappeared.

Perhaps the Panthers want Taylor back now after these idiots failed to make the Playoffs? Who knows...

I hope Eric stays at E. Dillon. I'm loving the idea of him turning these kids into champs. Especially if it's coming at the Panthers expense.

I'm sure this next season we'll get a lot more of the McCoys acting like jerkoffs.

Season 5 premiered as of this past Thursday.  You can find it now on your local torrent.

I think we all know the arc for this season will be the Lions winning the championship, the question is what other sorts of things will happen along the way.

I still like the show, but I really loved the first season.  I miss those original characters and feel like the writers haven't had quite as much of a handle on where things are going since then.

For me Season 1>2>3>4, so far.
Title: Re: Friday Night Lights
Post by: Kal on October 30, 2010, 07:54:49 PM
I don't know if I can rank them so easily. Season 3 and 4 are great. Two had some issues with the SPOILER  "Landry murder stuff" and it was cut short because of the strike so they couldn't wrap up the storylines well.

Anyways, I'm very happy its back and sad that its the last one. I think although the Lions will get good and thats part of the storyline, it will be mostly about wrapping up the arc of each character. I know some old characters will come back and they will tackle some unfinished business. I predict lots of crying, on their part and ours.

Season 5 thoughts?

I like it, but I don't love it. I miss the old cast but this cast is growing on me but it's hard to become attached knowing there are only 6 or so hour long episodes left. Julie is the weakest link. Should have just let her go off to college and be done with her. Her story offers nothing. Liking Vince and his arc with his father and I like the Luke and Becky storyline. Hate Billy Riggins sticking around but I see why they have to have him. Curious where this goes and how they end it.

I've been very impressed with how well they've transitioned to the new group of characters. I can't wait for the shit to hit the fan between Coach Taylor and Vince's dad. More than anything, I can't wait until after the show is over for good and I can watch all five seasons in a marathon. It doesn't get the notice that Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Lost or whatever have gotten, but this show could make a strong case for being the best on TV.

loved seeing matt seracen show up at the end of the last episode. still have yet to watch episode 9, the fact that there are 5 seasons of this show is a gift. it's too bad it wasn't a bigger hit because they transitioned casts very well. there was one episode this season, i think it was the one where the team played the away game that really sold me on the new cast.  i like that every play doesn't have to involve matt seracen or tim riggins, it seems like more of a team this time.

it'll be interesting to see how it ends. the show could've easily ended after Season 3 and called it a day so the fact that we have these two seasons is a nice victory lap. making the Dillon Panthers the new nemesis was a stroke of genius.

I didn't like the episode from last week, but this week's was great.  I guess my problem with it still is that they have two episodes left but the arcs are like mini-arcs: the school budget crisis came up two weeks before the finale, as did Tim Riggin, etc. etc.  they're not building any drama or tension in that manner.  the first season has that beautiful momentum; one injury creates 26 episodes' worth of conflict.  this season doesn't have much of that, it seems like the writers are just scraping together whatever to throw at their characters

Title: Re: Friday Night Lights
Post by: Stefen on January 28, 2011, 05:44:10 PM
the min-arcs could just be setting up the finale. I mean, the cuts having to happen gives Taylor and family an easy way to take college jobs while not letting down the students who want them to stay.

Does anyone else think the Taylor's baby is ugly?

They had said before that this season was to close arcs on all the characters, including the ones that have left. That's why that short moment of Smash Williams was there, and they are bringing everyone back. We'll for sure see some more surprise guests in the last couple of episodes. Wouldn't be surprised if Landry, perhaps Tyra and a bunch of people show up for State.

Sad this is almost over.

Good second to last episode. Really set up the finale perfectly. Do the Lions win state? Nobody cares. What happens with the Taylor family?

I predict Lions win state by a slim margin (it's TV) and then the Taylors move to Pennsylvania so Tami can take the Dean of Admissions job and Billy Riggins is put as head coach (LOL) of the newly formed Dillon Panthers. Tim Riggins passes out in a ditch, wakes up, bangs some hot girl, has the worst day ever then realizes it's the best day ever, then Luke gets admitted to a good college and Becky comes with him, cut to Buddy Garrity, still in Texas as he talks some sense into someone, anyone, and then sells a car to them and reminds them they're making the right choice then Lyla comes back, reminds everyone shes hot but hasn't done a movie since this tv show, end credits as Coach Taylor grabs a packed box from the back of his Chevy Tahoe that now has Pennsylvania plates instead of Texas plates. Saracen helps.

I just want it to end awesome and good. Stuck with this show for awhile. I want it to end well.

I like your ending Stefen. I also hope it ends well. Makes me sad its over. It's really one of the best shows on TV and it has been amazing every year.

I don't think Lyla will show up, considering that she would come to bang Tim Riggins and he is already back with the other one. Plus she is in that movie with Leighton Meister and she'll be in the new Charlie's Angels, so she's got shit going on.

Saracen is awesome. He will probably propose to Julie or something.

And what happened with that stupid McCoy? They moved somewhere else? I don't think those actors were too busy to come back.

Lyla's amazing but Tyra's a hell of a consolation prize. I think they wrapped up Lyla's story last season when she came home from school. I like that they're creating real conflict with the Taylor marriage, although Tami is being extra shitty about it (that whispered "18 years" was a cheap shot). Also Eric just turned down a huge oppurtunity.

I hope it ends well. For some reason I though this past one was the last one but i'm happy there's one more. I like that it doesn't even matter who wins state in the end.

would you not be shitty if you were in her position? after how shitty eric's been about it?

She's done everything for Eric's coaching career, and then she gets, pretty much a bigger opportunity than Eric has ever gotten (Dean of Admissions beats Quarterback coach at a college) and Eric is giving her a hard time about it. I'm on her side this time.

And Tyra and Lyla are opposites. Tyra is freaky sex hot, but Lyla is wifey material pretty. It just depends on what kind of day bi-polar Riggins is having. Does he feel like getting rowdy, getting into dustups at the local watering hole, breaking the law, etc or does he feel like buying some land, settling down, starting a family, living happily ever after? It changes hourly with Riggins. He needs to see a psychiatrist. Get some pills or something.

I just want Landry back for the last episode.  I miss that kid.  They just need to have a scene of him and Saracen hanging out.  Or the final scene after the Lions win State is that everybody celebrates by going to a Crucifictorious concert.

I want all the season 1 kids back in a room together.  Or on the field.  Then I would cry.

I dunno if they made a good balance between setting up the season 1 kids' endings vs. the current kids ending, who knows maybe the finale will be a good wrapup.
stefen - I never thought Tyra was hot - she's like the Busy Phillips character (Kimberly?) from Freaks and Geeks.  Layla is something else.  remember when she showed up in last season for two episodes just to fuck Tim?

Epic finale. Just amazing.

This show has entered my top 5 shows of all-time. It belongs there with shows like The Wire and Freaks and Geeks. The characters, storylines, writing, acting, plotlines, everything, was just really, really good. When I wish I could erase my brain and watch something again for the first time ever, it belongs on some list; any list. Put it on all of them.

last thirty minutes were otherworldly. wish there was going to be a 6th season, so much more story to tell with these characters.

This is a great read.  I miss this show so much already.

Caught the last 15 min of the finale today on NBC... so amazing...

And did you guys read the rumors about a movie in the works? Usually its bullshit but apparently this is actually being considered and written. Only problem has to do with book rights for a second movie, which Pete Berg doesn't have. I don't know what could happen if they did a movie but I would watch these characters do anything...

This weekend I got to two-step and slow dance with Becky (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2267725/). She's been hanging out in the town I live in since she started filming this movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1894561/) around here. Was at this hick bar watching my friend play in this bluegrass band and i was a-hippie dancing and so was she and (being from oklahoma) i initiated the two-step (i can two-step like a mother fucker.... not really) and it didn't hit me until much later in the night when a friend mentioned it that, "Holy shit that was Becky!" Riggins' is gonna kick my ass!
