since he has shorts and docs and music videos as well we're excluding those to make our lives easier, this will be the list we're working from:

Silence
The Wolf of Wall Street
Hugo
Shutter Island
The Departed
The Aviator
Gangs of New York
Bringing Out the Dead
Kundun
Casino
The Age of Innocence
Cape Fear
Goodfellas
The Last Temptation of Christ
The Color of Money
After Hours
The King of Comedy
Raging Bull
New York, New York
Taxi Driver
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Mean Streets
Boxcar Bertha
Who's That Knocking at My Door

jenkins

i haven't seen all of them recently enough to be able to rank all of them. here is how i'd rank the ones i've seen recently enough to rank them:

Taxi Driver
Silence
Hugo
Mean Streets
Bringing Out the Dead
The Wolf of Wall Street
The King of Comedy

i sort of have to put Taxi Driver there because of how i've talked and felt about it for so long, although one day it might not sit at the top any longer

I'm increasingly convinced that After Hours is his masterpiece, but Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are up there. Then you've got a lot of middle, then you have Wolf of Wall Street.

I'm only really sure about the top two, the rest will vary massively based on how recently I've seen them:

After Hours
Taxi Driver
Goodfellas
Silence
Casino
Raging Bull
The Wolf of Wall Street
Bringing Out the Dead
Mean Streets
The Last Temptation of Christ
Hugo
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
The Age of Innocence
Cape Fear
Who's That Knocking at My Door
The Aviator
The Departed
Gangs of New York
The Color of Money
Shutter Island

jenkins

honestly i figured i had to put The Wolf of Wall Street since it came after Hugo and i knew i was going to put Hugo which i saw twice and adore. but i barely remember The Wolf of Wall Street, just sort of its excess, not its nuance. i'm making up the list as i go along really

also, i believe i've seen Goodfellas between The Wolf of Wall Street and now. the cocaine addiction side-effects hitting amid the helicopter noises is a scene in Goodfellas i strongly remember, for example. but i remember Leo going to his car acting like a lunatic in Wolf as well

yeah After Hours is a good one. is it the best early20s-nightlife film ever made? it is perhaps better than its contenders i'm remembering, for example Into the Night is surprisingly garbage, and Miracle Mile has bravado but lacks grace, it's barely similar, like what does Modern Girls have to do with this, okay i didn't reach a conclusion here

not even 24hrs and Taxi Driver is dropping for me. the signs were there. so i watched The Aviator today and i got so into it. i'd like to redraft my list

Silence, this is where it belongs
Hugo, it's the most adorable movie he's ever made
Mean Streets, you see him both breaking into cinema and exploring the world he knows
The Aviator, this might be when he kicks into high gear, not actually yeah i still have to rewatch Gangs of NY too
Taxi Driver, it's the streets i adore, the buildings, the score, the night, the atmosphere
The Wolf of Wall Street, i remembered Spike Jonze and idk it's just probably pretty good actually
Bringing Out the Dead, this has three great sequences
The King of Comedy, is trash but it's still not as bad as Boxcar Bertha if that makes you feel better

Alethia

The Irishman (adding it bc I can, also not sure it will stay at #1, I'm just really feeling it atm)
Casino
Raging Bull
Silence
Goodfellas
Taxi Driver
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
The Wolf of Wall Street
The King of Comedy
The Aviator
Bringing Out the Dead
The Last Temptation of Christ
The Age of Innocence
Mean Streets
The Color of Money (underrated)
Gangs of New York (some of Marty's worst scenes but DDL ultimately makes it worthwhile)
The Departed
After Hours
New York New York
Cape Fear
Shutter Island stinks

I have not seen Hugo or Boxcar Bertha or Kundun.

Something Spanish

too many movies to rank, i'll just list the ones i consider greats/favorites in some order of favor

Goodfellas
Mean Streets
Taxi Driver
Bringing Out the Dead
Casino
The Wolf of Wall Street
The Departed
Raging Bull
The Aviator
After Hours
King of Comedy

Been forever since i've seen Last Temptation, NY, NY, Kundun, or Boxcar (easily the most forgettable), but none of those really did it for me. The remainder I actually have seen/revisited within the past few years, and are either **1/2 to ***. I like Shutter Island a lot, AOI is good, Alice is ok, Color of Money ain't bad, Cape Fear a functioning thriller.

His segment in NY Stories would probably rank right under King of Comedy. And Hugo is the only one I have never seen.

Drill

Gangs of New York, Shutter Island, and The Departed are awful. Wolf Of Wall Street was like a Scary Movie parody of his work. Cape Fear and Casino aren't good but they're fun. The Aviator is mediocre. Should have just picked one of the plotlines and made a whole film around that. The Age Of Innocence fails because DDL and Pfeiffer have zero chemistry. They looked like they didn't even like each other.

After Hours is excellent. GoodFellas and Raging Bull are great. Should rewatch Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore but I remember it being good. Probably inspired a lot of slice of life indies.

polkablues

I always forget about Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore because it's so different from anything else he's made, which is also one of the reasons I love Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

Cape Fear

It feels weird to say that people nowadays don't talk enough about Raging Bull. I feel like some have retroactively written it off because the LaMotta character is a bit one-note but as a piece of filmmaking it's about as perfect as you can get. Every scene is executed to perfection.

I think the last four are the only ones that don't really work for me but even they have strong elements. I need to revisit Silence to figure out where it stacks in here, have a feeling it'll be pretty high.

yeah totally. and that's really well said because it addresses that lamotta doesn't posses what one might call expansive insight into the human condition. so it's really impressive how expansive the movie feels

this is how im ordering the ones ive watched past roughly-month

Raging Bull
The Aviator
Casino
Gangs of New York

there's also widespread Scorsese agreement about how much Gangs of New York sucks. with the top there are five or whatever contenders and with the bottom there are: Who's That, Boxcar, Gangs of NY, Shutter

quite clearly De Niro has been overall more helpful than Leo
