Title: Inside the actors studio
Post by: Stringstroker on July 12, 2003, 12:54:35 AM
I think we should petition Bravo/NBC to put this series on DVD.  Maybe two actors per disk.  There could be great extras.  Outtakes, Extended editions (you know they have cut stuff out they wanted to leave in for time.)  Filmographies, bios, and other cool stuff.  I know it wouldn't be a huge seller, but it would be cool to own a few of your favorite actors interviews.  Plus if your favorite actor did one and you missed it, they hardly ever replay the old ones.  Your thoughts?

Good idea, but two actors per disc isn't much.  DVDs could hold three per disc at least.  They have the space.  Those interviews are only about 40 minutes long, no?

I've only seen a few of 'em but the ones I have seen have been great.  My favorite is Julianne Moore's interview, and from the thread here I think a lot of people really liked that one.  I saw a bit of Francis Ford Coppola's interview last week, and it was alright, too.  He seems a bit egotistical, though.  But maybe that's just me.

Edited they are only 40 minutes long.  I heard the Robin Williams went on with the students for 2 hours.

can't you just write them and they send you videotapes of them for $20 or something?
Title: Inside the actors studio
Post by: ono on July 12, 2003, 02:05:45 PM
Probably, but that would probably only include what was aired.  Plus, $20 is incredibly overpriced for one episode you could just tape off the air for free (minus the cost of a VHS tape).  With the proliferation of DVD players, and the moderate popularity of the show, it would behoove them to at least look into it.  I wonder how long it'll take for them to realize it.

I have this burnt on CD and have never gotten to see the actual stand up, but it is funny as hell.  Cross seriously sounds like he is crying while doing the climactic ending: "and thank you to god, for making me the vessel through which he speaks.  I am the greatest, I am JAMES LIPTON!"

Did anyone see the absofuckinglutely despicable documentary on The Hamptons from last summer I believe?  There was a great moment of James Lipton hitting on some random waitress that made him come off as the sleaziest old man.  I was lucky (?) enough to meet him that same summer (big namedrop there).  He's quite troll-like in person...

Also, I like the music they play right before commercial.  It makes it seem like whomever they're interviewing has died...

I believe David Cross mentions Julia Roberts in his explanation of Lipton, which is hysterical, because he says it with such contempt, as if the idea of this woman being considered a successful actress is beyond him...

Cross did indeed do his scathing Lipton impression on "Mr. Show" (he starts washing the feet of the young Affleck-like subject by the end of the bit). He calls the character Cyrus Castilla Tetly, but it's clearly Lipton. It's one of the last episodes, #409, "Sad Songs Are Nature's Onions". And the HBO stand-up special where he does the rant is called "The Pride is Back", which originally aired in 1999.

And a best-of "Primetime Glick" is available on DVD through the Comedy Central website.

It was alright. Didn't know he was that heavy into drugs as well as selling which lead to his imprisonment on attempted murder, all at around the age of 13. Gave respect to PTA and praised Julianne, who he said was just like that mother figure to him. Said that PTA wanted the prosthetic cock "bigger" and "harder." Didn't spend a lot of time on Three Kings though.

Yes. He said that, after Three Kings, he would have done anything to work with David O'Russell again. He also said that about 80% of that character is him because O'Russell would ask him questions about "anything and everything." He continued that he understood all the philosophical questions after the fifth screening.

Ahhh screw you mac

EDITED OUT THE MIDDLE PART  and then put it back in cause I was paid

<that quote from whatshisface>

Only that he was more than happy to do it, he said he'd work with O'Russell even if he wasn't an actor in the film he just likes being around him when he's in his working mode and all the creative juices are flowing. Told about how O'Russell made him talk to him and by the end of the film O'Russell knew him better than he knew himself, O'Russell even had him going to therapy.

When Lipton asked Walberg if he understood all the existential detective stuff Walberg said only after he watched the film six times. (mac says 5, he's probably right)

I was surprised to learn that he is the youngest out of NINE children! Holy damn!

What gets me about Insides The Actors studio is James Lipton. When he'll ask the actor a question and they will provide an interesting answer but Lipton will just move on to his next question. He never goes into any depth.
Ex.
Lipton: "Tell me about your childhood?"
Actor: "I used to get beat up a lot, so I wound up killing someone"
Lipton: "Okay. How long were you at acting school?"

hahah Lipton just goes on no matter how interesting the answer. He sticks to the questions he has on those trusty blue note cards.

haha what if someone went in there before the show and jumbled his note cards around. That outta set him straight.

I'm also sick of him complaining about his wife not letting him get a tattoo. What a pansy. Be a man, put your wife in her place, and go out and get that tattoo!

Another thing I want to share- this semester in my tv production class we had to do an interview for a project. I offered to be the interviewer. I had to interview a Ben Franklin impersonator. Damn right I stole those questions Lipton asks his guests at the end. Ben Franklin's favourite curse word is "horse shit."

I saw the one with John Goodman over the weekend. It was pretty good. He's a funny guy. For instance, James Lipton asked him what it was like to work with Halle Berry on the Flinstones. He was all like, "Oh, it was awful! The experience gave me nightmares... the kind where you gotta get up and go to the bathroom!"

It's the editing.  The interviews go one for a few hours and they chop 'em down.  I wish you could watch them in their entirety too.  Basically the show is a tease, but I still like it.  Natalie Portman was good.  Smart, funny...

Checking on the  bravo site (http://www.bravotv.com/Inside_the_Actors_Studio/upcoming_premieres/), I find they mention the upcoming guest, and these are the new shows, in the upcoming guests list are Colin Farrell, Redford, Cameron Diaz and O. Wilson. No Marty, so expect this to be a rerun.

They really dropped the ball with Morgan Freeman. He needed a two-hour show. They just went to the 'tentpole' movies, not spending much time on each one. Se7en got one question asked about it, and it wasn't even related to the film. After a huge audience reception to Shawshank, all was asked of Freeman was if he read the book (he didn't). CUT TO: commercial.

You know you're in for a good interview when your subject says, "I was sexual in Kindergarten."

Angelina Jolie was very open and honest; from her obsession with cutting, her loves, her fear of motherhood, etc. Lipton had a field day talking with her about flying and tattoos.

I did.  It was quite wonderful, actually.  I don't usually watch this show, but Chappelle was very honest, open and insightful.  He would be the first to say that Half-Baked wasn't good (it didn't live up to what he saw in his mind, he was disappointed with the direction).  Actually none of his movie work is that good.  He is proud of Block Party, though, I believe.  He explains how he feels about his place as the $50 million man the while back when he went to Africa.  Stuff like that.

He's a very smart and funny guy, and his general honesty cancelled out the general ass-kissing on that show.

Alright, now we're back pn track:

Dustin Hoffman Recalls Audition

Dustin Hoffman is a lucky guy. He got his big break in 1967's "The Graduate" despite his audition.

In a two-hour edition of Bravo's "Inside the Actors Studio," set to air June 25 (9 p.m EDT), Hoffman recalls the experience: "I went to shake the prop guy's hand and all my subway tokens fell out (of my pocket). And he picked them up and handed them back to me saying, `Here kid, you're gonna need these.'"

The 68-year-old Hoffman, who won best actor Oscars for 1988's "Rain Man" and 1979's "Kramer vs. Kramer," is the 200th guest on the program, hosted by James Lipton.

"A friend told me to take acting, and I asked him, `Why? I don't want to act,'" Hoffman recalls. "And he said, `Because no one failed acting.'"

While preparing for his role as Ratso Rizzo in 1969's "Midnight Cowboy," he found inspiration on the streets of New York.

"I went out looking for a limp a limp that was so graphically described in the novel," he says. "And then I found this guy on 42nd Street and I was following him for the limp and then the light changes, and he's the first to cross. Even with his limp! And I thought, `That's my guy.'"

Hoffman, who portrayed a man impersonating a woman in 1982's "Tootsie," also reveals a shallow side.

"If I had met myself at a party (as a woman), I wouldn't go up and talk to myself," he says. "And I thought, but I was very interesting! I'd be a very interesting woman. And look what I'd be missing out on."

When asked what movies affected him when he was a child, Hoffman says, "Oh, I identified with `Dumbo.' He had the ears, but I had the nose."

His upcoming films include "Stranger Than Fiction," also starring Will Ferrell and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Thanks Wilder! I peeped Harvey Keitel's last night. He's been on my mind a lot after I recently watched  'Smoke' and 'Blue In The Face'

Next up: Mike Nichols, Billy Bob Thornton, Charlie Sheen should be interesting...

and I have to watch Ben Affleck's just to see how he comes across.

any suggestions?
