Title: TOP 10 2005
Post by: modage on January 02, 2006, 05:14:12 PM
Best Of's are a tricky business, and for me this year has been an especially difficult one.  When even my favorite films are not without their problems, I've tried to weigh my experience watching the film with that of a more critical analysis.  This is the give and take that comprises my list because even though a movie like King Kong isnt a perfect film it still gave me a greater experience than watching Good Night and Good Luck, a film I didn't have any problems with specifically, but just never managed to give me that thrill that I wait for all year.  The films that did thrill me were as follows...

1. Batman Begins
While the Burton films are still my favorite, just seeing Batman taken seriously again onscreen was thrill enough to put this at the top of my list.  A great cast and great people involved all across the board, my only hope is that everyone will return for the sequel.

2. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
With many of my favorite filmmakers absent this year, 2005 held a few notable surprises, none bigger than this film.  I'm pretty confident this will be a huge cult favorite when it hits DVD and people have a chance to discover it but for the handful of us who were able to see the film in theatres I think we all knew we were witnessing something special.

3. Munich
Very powerful filmmaking from one of my favorite filmmakers of all time.

4. Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire
I'd been disappointed on some level with every previous Potter installment but during this film I learned to just enjoy myself and appreciate following these characters through their whole journey.  The darkest and most adult film in the series is also probably the best.

5. The Squid & The Whale
Another surprise was this film which beat all odds (and my Sundance prejudices) to become a very funny, very painful, very good film.

6. War Of The Worlds
Not quite as good as I had hoped it would be from Spielbergs recent sci-fi efforts A.I. and Minority Report, but a thrilling pastiche of his other films from a guy who could probably make this film in his sleep.

7. Kung Fu Hustle
Another huge surprise for me this year was this film which had me dying with laughter in the theatre.  I thought it was hilarious, the action was well staged and I'm shocked that more people haven't seen it.  A reminder: ""like Jackie Chan and Buster Keaton meet Quentin Tarantino and Bugs Bunny" How can any film geek NOT get excited over that?!

8. King Kong
An overblown film in every way, though it is a little rough around the edges and I wish Jackson had been given more time to tinker with the final edit of the film, it was a great ride and one that I hope sets the standard for action/adventure films to come.

9. Millions
It's a family film from the guy who did Trainspotting and 28 Days Later, what's not to love?  If I had watched the trailer I would never have gone to see this either, but since I didn't and it was released in the no-mans-land of March, this was my first 'favorite' of the year.  And as usually happens, has still managed to cling on to a spot in my Top 10.  Extra points go to films with the courage to come early!

10. Good Night And Good Luck
A very economical film proves that George Clooney has picked up a few tricks from Soderbergh and The Coen Bros. and just might turn out to be a great director in his own right.

11. The Weather Man
12. Wedding Crashers
13. Sin City
14. Star Wars: Episode III Revenge Of The Sith
15. Domino
16. Match Point
17. A History Of Violence
18. The Constant Gardener
19. Cinderella Man
20. Brokeback Mountain

NOTABLE: Sympathy For Lady Vengeance, Oldboy, Wallace & Gromit: Curse Of The Were-Rabbit, 2046, Bubble, Where The Truth Lies, Layer Cake, Thumbsucker, Elizabethtown, Night Watch, The Corpse Bride, Three...Extremes, Melinda & Melinda, Syriana, Jarhead, Me & You & Everyone We Know, The Descent, The New World, Serenity, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Hustle & Flow

I think now its the right time to start with the list... although I have to see a couple of films (Brokeback Mountain, The Producers, Hustle & Flow, Match Point, Walk the Line, Syriana)

Here is my Best of 2005 List

1. Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith: We know that this is not literally the best movie, or the best directed, or the best acted movie. But its special for me (and for many people I believe) as its the missing part of the puzzle. I loved the film, and it was all I wanted from it. I wasnt expecting more. This year didnt have GREAT films in my opinion, so in a few years this will probably be the 2005 film I will remember the most.

2. Munich: This is the closest to a masterpiece I saw this year. Speilberg at his best.

3. King Kong: I wasnt dissapointed. The movie was beautiful and very well done. However, it didnt blow my mind. I dont know if I would have changed something or not. I would definetly would have wanted more NY CIty focus and not su much Island, but I cant complain.

4. Wedding Crashers: The best comedy of the year.

5. Cinderella Man: I just saw this last weekend and was shocked on how much I liked it.

6. Lord of War: A lot of people didnt like this(here or outside). But I liked it a lot. The story itself, and the acting.

7. The Island: Ok probably everyone is going to laugh, but I thought this was pretty good. The story is good, the special effects are good, and I liked the Bay/Johansson/McGregor combo.

8. Batman Begins: This was much better than expected. It wasnt 100% what it could have been, but it was a good comeback after the last ones. I look forward to the sequel and The Joker.

9. Tiempo de Valientes: I talked about this movie before. Unfortunatelly is not out here, and I have no idea when it will be. I will definetly get a copy soon and be glad to pass it around here to whoever is interested in watching it. I think because Fox bought the International rights, we might see it hitting here sometime this year.

10. Two for the Money: Ok I know... this definetly shouldnt be here. But it was a crappy year, and I still have to see a number of movies that would probably make the Top 10. However, this is my type of movie. Mathew McConaguhey rules (he also did in Sahara).

So I guess I will revise the list sometime when I finish watching the films mentioned on top. Other than the first 3 films of my list, the others are really nothing special. I just liked them, and when you start doing these lists its amazing how you figure out that this year sucked. Hopefully 2006 will be much more exciting... and we are all looking forward to it!

5-10. I don't care.

Do you realize how extremely non-specific your insult is?

You didn't list your top 10, you didn't say who was wrong, or what they were wrong about.

You have effectively presupposed that a mistake was possibly made by someone somewhere.

pfft i was simply clarifying what pozer already meant. I'm waiting to post my list, after I see all the films from this year that I can, something you clearly didn't do by including Two for the Money and The Island, calling this a crappy year.

You forget that this is about TASTE... each person is different... not all films are made for everyone. So leave my list alone.

I did clarify that there are some films that I havent been able to see and that may be in my Top 10 list. For the ones that I did see, those are the 10 films I liked the most. I dont think there is anything wrong with them.

Two For the Money wasnt very good, but I enjoyed it a lot. It wont be a script that I will get, or learn from, or watch the special features of the DVD. But it was really entertaining, I like the topic a lot, I like football, I enjoy betting in general, so it worked for me.

i'm pretty sure he was talking about Meatball's list which was above his post. meatball then deleted it after pozer made his incisive remark.

it was vague enuff to be funny because it was open to interpretation. it was funny if we got what he was talking about, that was the risk. if he had just quoted the list he was talking about the joke would hav sucked. again..

Right. The first, best example that comes to mind is Fred Willard in Waiting for Guffman, when he dances with that ribbon and rubs it down the ladies, but comes to Levy and says "Forget about it", then does it again, explaining what he did.

Making lists should come with requirements. Everyone thinks certain films are up for ridicule and certain ones are up for praise. I disagree as much with the Hollywood blockbuster lists as I do with the indie ones. Explain yourself people. Marking yourself intelligent based on how good you think your taste is just looks dumb.

Asshole comment, I know. I really have no ill will toward anyone but the abuse on the first page was dreadful.

My list, never-to-be-completed, as I usually find some unexpected film that I love from the year waaaay after listing season is relevant. But still, I love this list and these movies as it is.

1. Good Night, and Good Luck.

I saw this the day after I saw King Kong. After seeing a movie like that, which drones on and on for 3 hours, and then to see a movie like this, which couldn't be more than 90 minutes, I found it to be such a more rewarding and worth-while experience. I loved the movie and was left wanting more (in a good way). David Straitharn gives the best performance of his career and I think his portayal of Edward Murrow is the finest acting of the year topped only by Philip Seymour Hoffman as Truman Capote.

2. Capote

I'd say that basically these first two movies are tied. Capote was so great, and so much better than I expected. I figured it would of course be a decent movie with a great performance by Hoffman. Well, the performance was great, but so was the movie. Everything was perfect. You can mark my words right now that PSH will win the best actor Oscar this year. I also hope that Clifton Collins Jr. gets a nod for best supporting actor, and Catherine Keener for supporting actress.

3. The 40-Year-Old Virgin

When I first compiled my list of 2005's best I had this around number 8 or 9. Then, I bought the Unrated DVD and just fell insanely in love with it, watching it over several times. It has so many likable and fleshed-out characters, who are all halarious in their own unique way. It's The Godfather of raunchy sex comedies as far as I'm concerned. It's immature at points and innapropriately halarious, but it has a good heart and it all comes together amazingly well. In 2004 the world recognized Steve Carrell in his halarious supporting role in Anchorman. Now, he has his own movie, and it is honestly one of the best comedies I've seen in my life ever.

4. Brokeback Mountain

Surely the running candidate for the Best Picture Oscar (Ang Lee being a best director lock at this point), Brokeback Mountain succeeds so greatly because of its overall honesty and legitimacy when it comes to its subject matter. It takes its gay love story seriously, it's not a side note (ala Far From Heaven), it's not done cheaply or preachy (ala Philadelphia), it is what it is. Yes there have been homosexual movies before but it's not like Mulholland Dr. with two hot lesbians solving a mystery, or a true story about an interesting person that happens to be gay. I knew while watching the last few scenes that this was an instant classic. A very landmark movie. It lived up to its buzz much better than something like King Kong, which was the only movie that had more buzz (I didn't hate Kong BTW).

5. Walk The Line

This bio-pic would have to get my vote for best heterosexual love story of the year! lol If this was any other movie than the Johnny Cash story, I'd probably praise this as the greatest movie evar w00t. But, my expectations where so high that it drops down my list. Honestly, this is the only case I can think of that I would say an excellent 10/10 film was dissapointing, but it's only because I love Johnny Cash. Still, a great movie with great performances. A wonderful, getting-rarer-by-the-year type love story.

6. Batman Begins

Yes, let me be the umpteenth person on the internet to join the praise for Batman Begins. This was a great movie. The filmmakers had the courage to do this as a legitimate film and it paid off enormously. I loved it and I actually went to see it 3 times in the theatre.

7. Lord of War

Notice how cage always jumps from very Hollywood Jerry Bruckhiemer flicks, to not-so-Hollywood gems such as this? I think National Treasure made approximately 8.3 bajillion dollars, while Lord of War was generally overlooked by audiences. It was a very interesting movie about one man's quest for power, and the American Dream. His little speech at the end to Ethan Hawke was great, and really sums up the movie well.

8. Sin City

Another great comic book adaptation, yet so much more than that. I'd compare it to Pulp Fiction. We get so few movies like that and this year we got it. Oh yeah...we got it good. Chicka. I'd say this was one of the most unique and thrilling film-going experiences of the year. I still need to buy the goddamn DVD!

9. Syriana

Many of this year's standout movies where very haunting, and Syriana takes the cake in that category. Also in its subtle chaos and urgency. It was a very exhausting but satisfying film experience for me. Top-notch performances all around, particularly by George Clooney.

10. A History of Violence

This stunning movie was based on a graphic novel, so I guess a theme of some of the year's best movies is developing...Anyway, this has to be the year's most cerebral film. It asks the viewer to really think about certain things: nature vs. nurture, family values, (*spoiler*)leading double lives and which is the true self(end*spoiler**), etc. etc. all of it is done in a great cronenberg fashion. It also has great performances by Ed Harris, William Hurt, Maria Bello, and of course Viggo Mortenson, who probably had many viewers saying, "Lord of the wah?"

1. The New World. I was only able to see the shortened version (the wide release) of The New World, but I doubt it would have mattered. This film stands out as possibly the only film of the year I was lucky enough to see that in some way advances the art of filmmaking. Much like Barry Lyndon, I hope Malick's latest can withstand the general malaise it is receiving and gain its deserved appreciation as time passes.

2. 2046. Wong Kar-Wai remains an inspiration. Although 2046 does not eclipse In the Mood for Love for me, it is a wonderful companion.

3. The Squid and the Whale. What can I say? I love direct and indirect film, music and literary references in movies. It is almost like an inside joke for cinephiles. The Squid and the Whale delivers in that regard...and many others. Jeff Daniels was/is indescribably brilliant. And I loved how his oldest son would mimic, to his own detriment, his father at almost every opportunity. So real.

4. A History of Violence. Cronenberg treats violence like a nasty virus and no one has immunity. This movie also stuck with me because of my upbringing in a conservative, Midwest family with a solid, religious foundation. The filmmakers go to great lengths to show that solidity is anything but.

5. Brokeback Mountain. The sadness in this film is an anchor. I think we all have those moments we wish would never end and those we desire to relive. Ang Lee captures these feelings brilliantly.

6. Cache
7. The Constant Gardner
8. Munich
9. Batman Begins
10. Grizzly Man

Does Downfall qualify for '05?
Yes.  It goes by the theatrical release year of whatever country you live in.  It would be unfair to not have it be on your '04 list because you had no way of seeing it and then not have it on your '05 list because it played in Germany earlier if you really felt it belonged on your top ten list.

It's my number one of '05.  But The New World isn't playing here (extremely angry face)!

1. The New World
2. Munich
3. Brokeback Mountain
4. Batman Begins/WoW
5. The Squid and the Whale
6. A History of Violence
7. Syriana
8. 2046
9. Good Night and Good Luck
10. Last Days

Honorable mention: Jarhead, Capote, Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Corpse Bride, Elizabethtown, Grizzly Man, Layer Cake...

Didn't see: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Constant Gardner, Broken Flowers, Downfall

I didn't include Revenge of the Sith, which otherwise would have sat at the top of my list.  I feel that my fandom of all things Star Wars probably gets in the way a bit when judging it.  I'm sure it will be my most watched movie of 2005 in the years to come.  And seeing it with a large large group of friends and family (many of whom I haven't seen since) will be one of my lasting memories of 2005.

Also, I at first had WoW in my honorable mention list.  But that just wouldn't suffice.  I'm not sure about it being in the number four spot, but pretty much everything not in the top three can move around depending on my mood.

even though 2005 we didn't get bombarded by documentaries like 2004 with the political ones or the year before with the cute ones, I think overall this year's documentaries are much better in quality in general.

I keep putting this off but there's really nothing else I want to see although perhaps a few I should see.  Fuck it, I'm done with 2005 until I dig it up later in a time capsule which I've buried in my film yard.

one.  the new world.
two.  save the green planet.
three.  brokeback mountain.
four.  downfall.
five.  kiss kiss, bang bang.
six.  good night, and good luck.
seven.  mysterious skin.
eight.  cache.
nine.  four brothers.
ten.  land of the dead.

I need to see Where the Truth Lies sober, for those who remember and are confused as to where it is.  If any.  Whatever shut up.

Runners up include other movies that didn't make the list.

5. Me You and Everyone We Know
6. A History of Violence
7. Broken Flowers

The problem with that comparison is that Garden State was a harmless little personal movie, while Crash threatens to destroy the very fabric of reality, one hack scene at a time.

Maybe that's an overstatement....

Nope.  Fabric of reality, destroyed.  I mean seriously, watch the part where Tony Danza's talking to Terence Howard and tell me that shit's not damaging the universe.

i dont hate on crash as much as most here do...i think the score and cinematography are both quite nice...some of the dialogue is bad and i am not a fan of most of the actors in this film...i liked ryan phillipe/cheadle the most...and i thought that sandra bulluck looked very hot in this film...i do to give crash props for doing something different with the stereotypes/races...spoilers..............................like, in most films african-americans are portrayed as martyrs and the white people are the devils...but in this film a few of the black characters ended up having no redeeming qualities...thats very unusual...in most hollywood films the racial trumpt card is always given to the minorities...and i like how they threw my ass for a loop..when out of all the characters that i related to the most and felt their situations....ryan was who i was pulling for to have a happy ending...and he fucked up...and i like how they made cheadle fuck over his own race to better himself...end of spoilers...........

maybe cine's right..ths iaint that bad.....
its pretty much anit-hollywood in a way...i'll be pulling for munich though

'Brokeback' Author Peeved About Top 10 Loss

Annie Proulx, whose 1997 short story inspired the film "Brokeback Mountain," has penned a scattershot blast in a British newspaper unleashing her anger over the film's Top 10 Number One slot loss.

Proulx criticizes Xixax poster Sigur Ros in the 1,094-word rant, which appeared in Saturday's issue of The Guardian, a liberal paper boasting 1.2 million readers daily.

The Top Film of 2005 went to "Voksne Mennesker," which focuses on finding yourself in life.

Sigur Ros is not only "out of touch not only with the shifting larger culture and the yeasty ferment that is America these days, but also out of touch with his own segregated city," Proulx writes.

"For those who call this little piece a Sour Grapes Rant," Proulx concludes, "play it as it lays."

Calls by the Associated Press to Proulx's Wyoming home and her literary agent, Elizabeth Darhansoff, were not immediately returned Tuesday.

Do Oldboy and Saraband count as 2005 films?

Does it matter when it was released more globally or released at all?

it's not an award show, you can post whatever you think is relevant here.

Because it was not released in the U.S. until last year, I counted Saraband as a 2005 release.

It would go by when the film got a theatrical release (film festival showings wouldn't count) in your respective country. In this case, both films got a theatrical run in the US in 2005.

Oh.  Well damn, I should've asked that question before Nominations (though I don't think an extra vote would've put Saraband up into Best Picture or Oldboy into Best Editing.

With that in mind, here is my top 10 or so of last year

10. doom house
9. mirrormask
8. sin city
7. batman begins
6. jarhead
5. oldboy
4. a history of violence
3. saraband
1. brokeback mountain (tie)
1. me and you and everyone we know (tie)

Man... I need to see more 2005 films.

You know, I got into such a craze trying to see all the films from 2005. I did see most of them, but it sucks that cinematic experiences will pass me by. I forget who said it, maybe Scorsese, but how this generation and future ones will miss out on so much cinema because there's just too much to digest and take in. I'm finding theater experiences more fulfilling and have managed to make them almost a routine, ie every Monday I've seen a movie for about three weeks now...V for Vendetta, Slither, today Brick. But I find modern movies mostly redundant. Catching up on earlier films and real cinema of the past, that's always much more fulfilling. Anyhow. Here's a list.

Junebug
Paradise Now
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Downfall
The Squid and the Whale
Grizzly Man
Rock School
Batman Begins
Munich
Walk the Line

This year (06) I've made a promise to myself that I'll see every movie I want to see that is getting decent-to-good reviews in the theatre.  it's pretty important to me because a cinematic experience is so vastly superior to watching it on DVD.  i missed out a few key ones in 2005, most notably the new world and kiss kiss bang bang.  since i wont see all of them until mid-summer, here's what i got so far:

:yabbse-thumbup: :yabbse-thumbup: :yabbse-thumbup: :yabbse-thumbup:

1.  The Squid and the Whale - the one that I'll probably rewatch the most over the next few years.
2.  Downfall
3.  Me and You and Everyone We Know - easily the biggest grower on the list.
4.  Brokeback Mountain
5.  Munich - the best immediate response I had to a movie all year.

now, in no particular order:

:yabbse-thumbup: :yabbse-thumbup: :yabbse-thumbup:

Capote
Good Night and Good Luck
No Direction Home
Batman Begins
40 Year Old Virgin

I can't help but feel like I'm missing something, so you can expect an edit.
