Title: So Far This Year, Vol. 5
Post by: MacGuffin on July 02, 2007, 10:58:08 AM
It's that time again. We're half-way through the year. What are your picks so far?

Grindhouse

Didn't see 28 Weeks Later, Knocked Up, Hot Fuzz, 1408, Bug + more...

Edit:

I am adding *Zodiac (because I forgot about it with all the shit I've been seeing recently) and so far for my number one, *Paris, je t'aime
(even though I just came out from seeing it tonight, I realize that more fortunate individuals may have had the privilege of seeing this gem closer to its 2006 release date... so it may not count)

How/where did you see this?! Insanely jealous.

Zodiac, Knocked Up and Ratatouille are the only films worth remembering so far this year that I've been able to see. Hopefully Rescue Dawn will live up to my expectations on Wednesday.

Does Killer of Sheep count?  hey mod.  i'm not feeling listy, but zodiac and ratatouille were excellent, as was hannah takes the stairs.  i didn't love brand upon the brain! like i thought i would have and grind house was terrible. its been a pretty lame year so far, but the second half of 2007 looks really great.

Is Inland Empire this year?

In no particular order... some of the films I liked this year so far are:

- Knocked Up
- Mr. Brooks
- Ratatouille
- Sicko

I could put 300, Breach, Oceans 13 and Fracture there too but for sure they will not make it to the end of the year. Still, we have a long way to go...

Does Killer of Sheep count?

Definitely, since it was never released at all until this year. It's at the top of my list, followed by

Syndromes And A Century
Zodiac
I Don't Want To Sleep Alone
Knocked Up

And, as yet unreleased but seen at festivals,

Low And Behold
The Unforeseen
Frownland

Haven't seen Ratatouille yet, but I'm sure it'll be up there. And I think Inland Empire can count for this year, since that's when most of the country saw it.

Best:

1. Inland Empire
2. Grindhouse
3. The Hoax
4. Brand Upon the Brain!
5. Ratatouille

Worst:

1. Spiderman 3
2. 300

A Movie I Didn't Mind Paying For:

1. PotC: At World's End

It's been a painfully slow year for me.  Whatever I liked in the theater, and I can't quite remember anything I really liked in the theater, hasn't made much of an impression.

Oh man, I forgot that I saw that. Yeah, it's really good. Need to add that to my list as well.

If you haven't seen anything else by Shane Meadows, check out "A Room for Romeo Brass." Paddy Considine's first role, and he comes out swinging.

I'm adding invisible waves to mine.  it's another movie starring tadanobu asano, directed by pen-ek ratanaruang and shot by christopher doyle.  a lot of the same peeps from last life in the universe.  it's not as good as last life in the universe but it's got a better story.

Title: Re: So Far This Year, Vol. 5
Post by: pete on December 17, 2007, 07:33:38 PM
I haven't seen paprika, but I loved the comics to begin with.  the movie is just so beautiful, and I love its mixture of urban grit and magical realism.  its depiction of this friendship between black and white is beautiful, and, despite a relatively large backdrop and plot, the film never lost sight of their friendship.  I loved how they could ride an elephant at a laundromat or see swimming fish when dying or the animated color pencil sequences with the flower.  the action scenes are cool too, but mostly I am just moved by the interaction between the two boys.  that scene when White is crying in the police car is one of the saddest things I've seen all year.  great acting and animation.

black's hallucination is beautiful too.  I dunno, I feel like all the sequences are done really well, the three fights, the chase with the alien dudes, and when (super vague spoiler) that guy whacked that other guy.  the city also feels very detailed and beautiful.  I can't say I feel nostalgia watching the depiction of the city, but I feel something!

Yeah, there was screening of it during the AFI Dallas Festival last year and I've thought about it quite alot since then. Insanely well put together and a wet dream for anyone with at least a passing interest in design let alone typography. Did you Netflix it or did you have a chance to see it during it's insanely brief theatrical run?

Is there something you have yet to see that would change your mind? If not, why wait. And actually, you've already done it.

But you really think this has been a down year? I think it's easily the best film year of this decade...whatever that means.

I wanna see persepolis, atonement, and diving bell and the butterfly, and that one called like four days three hours or whatever the hell it's called, but aside from that, the films didn't really move me this year.  I'm waiting for the herzog documentary to come out soon, but I haven't heard nothing about any kind of release.

::stares at a melitng ice cube in his cup::

actually .....the best year will be 2007......its allways the repitition of the number seven.....

starting from the 1900's............

1907-1917-1927-1937-1947-1957-1967-1977-1987-1997-2007.......

so, combining my previous two posts, and a few others:

tekkon kinkreet
the darjeeling limited
there will be blood
once
paris je'taime
no country for old men
lust, caution
linda linda linda
the king of kong
invisible waves

I have soft spots for films that can make me cry and can blindside me, though.  all of the films this year are pretty much as good as I expected them to be.  I'm gonna catch up on my Asian films this week, maybe something will jump out and bite me in the ass.  I'm praying.  I'd love to knock no country and lust caution from my list.

i'm sorry but you guys are on crack. what exactly are you wanting to happen, how many "masterpieces" must be released in a given year for you to declare it truly great? you might want to consider lowering your standards a bit, or making one of your 2008 resolutions to be less cynical, b/c this has been a great year in cinema.
