Was this ever released on DVD? I went to Amazon and it looks like they are out of stock. They "list" the DVD, but it says that it is "Not yet released". Why are they listing it then? Is there a release date?

One of the more frequently requested DVDs among our readership is Kenneth Branagh's 1996 film Hamlet, where the then-36-year-old actor/director played the teenage Danish prince in a complete adaptation of Shakespeare's play, every last word of it. A lot of folks have wondered about that one.

Well, an industrious Branagh fan site wrote Warner Bros. to ask and Warner responded, saying the company is planning a 10th anniversary DVD release. So we double-checked with Warner and indeed that's the case. So, expect Hamlet, 10th Anniversary Edition in 2006.

Warner has just finally confirmed the release of Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet: 2-Disc Special Edition on 8/14 (SRP $26.99). The set will contain the remastered film in anamorphic widescreen video (transferred from the original 70mm elements) with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, a new introduction to the film by director/star Kenneth Branagh, audio commentary by Branagh and Shakespeare scholar Russell Jackson, the To Be on Camera: A History with Hamlet featurette, the 1996 Cannes Film Festival promo and a Shakespeare movies trailer gallery.
