Title: Humorous creations
Post by: Axolotl on November 10, 2020, 05:11:08 AM
[admin edit]

A newly-merged thread for written/produced comedy! Mostly sketches and longform things.

- TV shows should go in The Small Screen (https://xixax.com/index.php?board=38.0), but one-offs may be more appropriate here.
- Humorous videos that are less produced can go in the YouTube thread (https://xixax.com/index.php?topic=10548.0).
- Stand-up comedy can go here (https://xixax.com/index.php?topic=3857.0) if you're comfortable with the superlative thread title.

This is old news, but ICYMI, Scott Seiss's videos are essential viewing.

This is amazing. I'm about an hour in and fully intend to finish. It's the most realistic courtroom thing I've ever seen, and it's brilliantly constructed as fiction. Each new piece of testimony or argument does an enormous amount of worldbuilding.

LOL!! Didn't expect the post's content from this subject title. This iz one of my favorite long-form films. Is it filmed theater? An Adult Swim comedy epic? It's a multimedia climax event that puts Endgame to shame.

Don't know if you know this JB but everything they're referring to actually "happened" along seasons of their On Cinema At the Cinema series. So it's kinda not world "building" as much as referencing previous instances of [AS]/OnCinemaAtTheCinema lore? Technically this was like the mini-series ending to season 9.

So fucking funny when the Dekkar music is compared and how Tim will say thank you to getting overruled.

"Approach the bench?
Approach the bench?
...
Approach the bench?"

Okay, interesting. That makes sense.

The thread title is terrible, couldn't think of anything better.

I stayed up way too late watching this. Just constantly stunned by its brilliance. Do you have any more background info? How many non-actors am I watching? Because I'm genuinely confused how their performances are so authentic. How much is improvised?

The only info I have really is what any On Cinema fan might know - but that's more just being familiar with their "form." I'd say it's safe to assume everyone's an actor on some level out here in LA/The Valley even if small roles or extras, usually. I would assume that for each "Day" of the trial everyone had a beat sheet and that the dialogue is nearly totally improv, staying in character as their On Cinema roles. Everyone that's called to the stand was at some point a recurring character in the series, so they've had scripted episodes within the On Cinema series before.

Edit: Yeah most of these actors have headshots on their IMDB profile, so they're at the grindstone in some form out here.
If you're curious why i mentioned Multimedia, check this out JB : https://oncinematimeline.com/

A MAJOR highlight of On Cinema at the Cinema + I Think You Should Leave + Curb Your Enthusiasm:
you get to see "small-time" actors from out here have big-time laugh riot roles.

I was most curious about the judge and lawyers. Like, either that's a real judge who also does some acting, or he studied a lot for this role.

It actually reminds me of the old Onion videos.

I guess this means joke tweets are fair game in this thread.

I've recently gone down a Tim Heidecker YouTube rabbit hole and found this... it was great. His commitment to something most people will never see is astounding.

Also came across his comedy special. Didn't even know he had a comedy special.. and when he came out and fumbled with the mic for 2 minutes, I almost expected that to go on for an entire hour. It wouldn't have surprised me.

His pissmans mustard spots are pretty great too.

I put Tim up there with Andy Kaufman and Norm Macdonald... True originals.

I showed "Trial" to my sister to see how long it would take her to figure out it's not real. That moment occurred when the prosecution starting talking about how many people died and showed the photos of the victims.

Been trying to get into "Tim and Eric awesome show, great job" but man, it's hit and miss for me. Some of the skits are great but others are a little to absurd for me.

But I have been watching "Tim and Eric's Bedtime stories" and enjoying it.

Even tho they're great together, I just prefer Tim doing his stuff alone...

I've only just started this, but it appears to be another long-form work of genius. And the timing couldn't be better for a Joe Rogan parody.

Haha I just watched about 5 mins but that'll be a fun one, thanks.

Oh my God I did not expect this level of specificity and precision. It's absolutely spot on. I'm dying. (Half hour in.)

Somehow Tim even manages to pre-parody the thing Rogan posted a day later. ("It's all an infinite cycle...")

They nailed the mindless pontification of it all. After listening to countless hours of that blather and now considering myself a "former Rogan listener" this really made me laugh.

Heidecker has such a weird brand of comedy. Most of the humor only works if you have listened to like hours of Rogan lol (which I have unfortunately)

I listened back to hear Tim fawning over "Kyle Maxim". He's making fun of an amalgamation of Rogan dudes: 1: Bert Kreischer-  who takes off his shirt every standup set he does 2: Brendan Schaub: retired MMA figter who became a standup under Joe's advice and every comic resents him 3: Ari Shaffir: who's still been known to flash himself onstage in a post-Louie's cancellation world.

I was hoping (and somehow believed) this was actually 12 hours long, but it's 1 hour 8 min, looped. All the more reason to watch it though! It's a masterpiece of improv, parody, and satire.

This definitely added some helpful context before I got to that part.  :yabbse-thumbup:

Where my piss drinkers at?!?!

A great alternate version of Skynyrds Free Bird. If Free Bird was about drinking piss...

Tim Heideckers' a god damn genius.

As this is a Tim Heidecker thread now, I just want to shout out Celery Man and the trailer for The Comedy, which used to be my favorite things on YouTube for a while.

At one point I was so deep in the rabbit hole that everything on television came across as some weird parody. I could be watching MasterChef and be thinking "this is funniest thing on TV right now!". It melted my brain.

To be fair, MasterChef is essentally self-parody, so you're not wrong.
