I made this list with a few more rules for myself.
Only albums (not greatest hits) > This really had an effect on my top 10. It would be much different had I used greatest hits, and classier (w/ Prince, Beatles, Isaac Hayes, Rolling Stones, etc)

that's a pretty weird pick
The first three of theirs are pretty equal in my mind, but that one's the most underappreciated, so I always pick it.

Like everyone said, 10 is pretty tough, but it suggests a good sampling of everyone's taste, and music is a great way to judge someone's personality. My own picks of the moment, in no order and minus links to the covers...
The White Album (The Beatles)
Aquemini (Outkast)
The Boatman's Call (Nick Cave)
Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie)
Pink Moon (Nick Drake)
Belle And Sebastian (If You're Feeling Sinister)
The Cure (Disintegration)
Bjork (Homogenic)
The Velvet Underground (Loaded)
and the requisite Radiohead pick...Kid A
Wow, what a mellow list. Five years ago, Marilyn Manson and NIN would have been all over it.
In no order.
Radiohead - The bends.
Tool - opiate.
Del the funky homosapien - future development.
Nina Simone - blues
at the drive in - relation of command.
fiona apple - when the pawn
van morrison - moondance
dylan - blood on the tracks
zeppelin 2
aretha franklin - lady soul

greatest hits collection of singles kind of defeats the purpose of listing "albums".
Aside from that, I think your list is good. Alot of albums I enjoy on that list particularly Harvest. I would have left off Coldplay cause I feel they are a product of not having any good popular smart music nowadays so the next best thing will do, but I like your list. I feel the same way about Elton John. I like him but not enough to buy entire albums, his greatest hits is enough for me. Has it all in one package but it really can't be considered a favorite album, ya know?
the greatest hits stuff is because they've done a lot of great songs but they weren't on just one "album". so the greatest hits thing kinda works. besides there was no rule you couldn't have a compliation of greatest hits on your list so why not
1. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

1. Led Zeppelin II
2. Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
3. Radiohead - Kid A
4. Foo Fighters - Colour and the Shape
5. Rush - Permanent Waves
6. William Shatner - Has Been
7. Dave Matthews Band - Before These Crowded Streets
8. 311 - Grassroots
9. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
10. Tool -Aenima/Rage Against the Machine self-titled

That's all I'm listening to right now. That's not ten. The end.
covers are instantly recognizable, always. especially when they are two pixels wide.
yes, i can identify like 2 or 3 of those.
I wasn't really interested in the people who don't listen to the music. It's not like those covers are similar to other covers. You know them or you don't. People don't usually go "Hey I don't own that album but I really like it."

The reason we post big images is so people can read the title.
If the title is not present or you have small images, you post the name or album to clue us in. Now we have no idea what you're talking about, and posting that didn't mean anything to anyone.
Titles make a world of difference.
Alright. Then I challenge anyone to name my favorite albums.

dear life_boy,
you make the prettiest lists. you change font size, use itallics, bold, and then underline ...which is very underused. if you p.m. holden pike and get some color into your groove, you will be the best ever...but even still your lists are neat.

Thank you.
I was raised to believe a list worth making was worth making correctly. Confusion is the enemy of a good list.

Um..Yes i'm serious..At this moment in my life the killers album is the best out there in my opinion...i looked at your list..anyone who would pick radiohead's hail to the theif over Kid A or OK Computer is also obviously picking a current favorite rather than something more meaningful.
I do respect your comment though...and to answer Pubrick..picking the new Sigur Ros album is not invalidated, at least in my mind because based on that single song i've heard i can judge and include the new album anytime i feel like it.
I know my picks were not as obscure as everyone elses, but at least i'm being honest. With all the random assorted picks among the group it is clear that people are picking album covers and originality over the music.
Nice thread. Lots of good music, mhm.

The only way I can possibly narrow it down to ten would be to look at it from the viewpoint, what 10 albums would I want if I were to be stranded on a tropical island?
I'd have to say in no particular order,
The Beatles-White Album
The Beach Boys-Smiley Smile
Cherry Twister- At home with Cherry Twister
Bleu-Redhead
Pearl Jam-Ten
Superdrag-Last Call For Vitriol
Nirvana-Unplugged In New York
Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin IV
Fruit Bats-Mouthfuls
White Stripes-Elephant

That's funny... I love that album, and I've never met anyone else who's even heard of the guy. I covet his sideburns, as well.

Yeah I love that album. Highly underrated. I saw him recently at the Tap Room in the Knitting Factory in NYC. Drove from philly up to see him play only 6 songs :(. At least it was only 8 bucks. Great soulful voice live as well.

i don't know what to roll my eyes at more: that you're both following some sort of trend, or that one of you is clearly not following closely enough to get the damn title right.
nevermind, they're on the floor now.
The trend is that people are starting to realize how brilliant the album really is.
And for those keeping score at home, I got the title right.
(he sings "an" in the actual song, though)
Yeah, I got it wrong, I was thinking of the song.
It was amazing the first time I heard it, and it gets better everytime after that. It's just really, really well assembled.

Yeah, nothing against Panic at the Disco, but I have the feeling that in a couple of years you're going to see that on your list and go, "WTF?"
You switched to the right Spoon album, though. We also would have accepted "Kill the Moonlight".
wait wait wait...Flickerstick...correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the band that won that vh1 contest years ago? Knowing me there is alot of room for error, but I'm positive that it is the same band, possibly different band with same shitty name...and i realize that my musical taste has changed alot, but the shit I heard on that show was in fact shit...I'm not one to knock, but i just pictured that band being garbage, and by garbage i mean shit...is it the same band, is the question?

10. The Chameleons - Script of the Bridge (This Might actually be higher)
Flickerstick IS the same shit band you heard on that shit show.
I'm getting a little tired of hearing about Neutral Milk Hotel... that album is good and all, but that shit came out ages ago and while it probably belonged on top ten lists for 1998, I don't think it's a number one ever material in the least.
Also, with some exceptions, most people's lists appear to only have albums that came out within the last few years. Can we get an age check here, kids?
This last year I've tried to let go of the pretentious aspect and just focus on stuff I enjoy listening too. As for the Panic! qualms, they're getting too overexposed and overplayed but their CD is really good and I enjoy repeat listens (as I have since before they were played mainstream). If you're knocking it out of contention due to it being mainstream now, well give some of the other songs a listen and see what you think minus bias. I like their blending of classical and mild electronica. The lyrics are interesting and vocals are dead on.
So what if 14 year old girls now like them. It doesn't affect my enjoyment.
As for Flickerstick I saw the crap show too and somehow got their album way back in the day. Recently I found it on my iPod and have been listening to it fairly often. That's why I put it on the list. The music is rock but it's certainly a different type. I find myself going back to it. Again, avoid the pretension and just listen to what you like. I think that's what my new list reflects.
My list was mostly the stuff in heaviest rotation lately. If I were to do a Top 10 Ever, it'd probably look something like...
10 - Brian Eno - Another Green World
9 - Sufjan Stevens - Greetings From Michigan The Great Lakes State
8 - Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral
7 - King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King
6 - Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
5 - Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
4 - Bjork - Vespertine
3 - Yes - Fragile
2 - Beatles - White
1 - Pink Floyd - The Wall
I'd better settle on that before I pick at it forever, but yeah, my top 10 overall would look more like that (and yes NMH still appears on it).

Radiohead - OK Computer
Tool - Aenima
Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
Feeder - Comfort In Sound
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Counting Crows - August and Everything After
Placebo - Black Market Music
edit: Honorable mentions = Stereophonics, "You Gotta Go There To Come Back"; Minibar, "Fly Below the Radar"; Something For Kate, "Echolalia"; Fiona Apple, "When The Pawn, etc."; David Poe, "David Poe"; Our Lady Peace, "Spiritual Machines"; Remy Zero, "The Golden Hum"; Ours, "Distorted Lullabies"; The Mayfield Four, "Fallout"; Black Lab, "Your Body Above Me".
Okay. So I couldn't remember everything I had put on my list, so I went back to see if it still holds up, and sure enough. I might switch a couple from my top ten with a couple of my honorable mentions -- specifically bumping Feeder and Placebo for Stereophonics and David Poe -- but this is a list I feel good about hanging my hat on at the end of the day.
And I don't feel an ounce of guilt about not having a pre-90s album on here.

I'm not sure that I fully understand this...what are you referencing? Zeppelin, Floyd, velvet underground, or what? I'm not criticizing what you said i just don't really understand...I'm sure it's possible that this wasn't directed towards me, but i wasn't sure what exactly you meant? the reason for this is because, if i would have made a list at 16 it would have been like: Ramones-Ramones, and Clash-Clash...and that was old, and that was age 8 for me...

you don't have to put a question mark at the end of every sentence? cos not everything you say is actually a question? it makes it look like you don't know what a question mark is for? i'm starting to think maybe you don't?

congratulations, that's a question too.

I'm not criticizing what you said i just don't really understand?
uh this isn't a question.. the answer to what you're saying here and onwards would be:
how the fuck should we know? do you or do you not really understand, are you or are you not criticizing what he said?

i don't know, were you? (a ridiculous word order to boot)

so you see how your grasp on the english language makes JG look like Godardian.
I think what Neil is trying to indicate is that he talks with a Valley Girl accent, in which his voice lilts up at the end of every sentence as though it were a question.
"So, like, I was down at the mall? And this guy walked up to me? And he was all like, 'Hi'? And I was like, 'Eww'? And then he, like, made this face? So I, like, stabbed him?"
So, as you can see, what you perceive as bad english might actually be great dialect. Neil could be the Anthony Burgess or Hubert Selby of our generation.
...
Or not.

i so am not.
I don't understand why you had to pit the two against each other, but Zeppelin does fall to Pink Floyd pretty badly. I mean, I know they're the most popular Floyd albums, but a band that produces masterpieces like The Wall and Dark Side places them really high up above a lot of bands, but they've also got albums like Animals, Wish You Were Here, and Division Bell.
Zeppelin's good, but they're no Floyd.

so his choices should have structure to it? While i don't agree with any of his choices, I'm glad he didn't let his choices affect each other.
I could be wrong, but if anything I feel these choices seem to be the most recent work of a lot of these artists. Almost like you got sick of their older work because you heard it too much and you chose stuff later in their careers because you have more of a stomach for it.
like for weezer, not the blue album or pinkerton? are you on crack with the red album? maybe this is the random pas means actually.
or modest mouse, you picked probably their worst album. I'd go the lonesome crowded west or the moon & Antarctica.
though weezer and modest mouse probably wouldn't make it on my list at all. i'mma have to think on my top 10 and look at my old lists.
well, without having ''structure'' per se, let's see on an album per album basis

Arcade Fire- The Suburbs-----> Very recent, very low shelf life according to my intial love and complete lack of care now
The White Stripes- Elephant----->Defendable
Beck- Sea Change----->Defendable
Eminem- The Slim Shady LP ----->Fine if you put other hip-hoppy shit on the list, but alone in there, weird
The Beatles- Rubber Soul ----->Bam! My own favorite Beatle album too, but between Eminem and Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath- Paranoid----->Defendable... if it wasn't the only remotely rock album on the list
Franz Ferdinand- Tonight----->I can't name a single song on this album even though I own it. Completely forgetable.
Nirvana- Nevermind ----->Ok I guess
Modest Mouse- We were dead before the ship even sank ----->Worst album by this band ever, and I have Moon and Antarctica as my top 3-5 ever probably
Weezer- Red Album----->Worst album by this band ever
I ain't defendin shit, that's my list and I'm stickin to it.
I agree with you, Pas, the list doesn't suit my taste either, however, it's his list and your assessment of its falterings is laughable. By your logic, he should have more hip hop on there to justify the one hip hop album, and more "rock" (which, Black Sabbath isn't rock, it's proto-Doom) to justify Sabbath.
Though I do agree, Modest Mouse's newest album is aptly titled and should be barred from any top 10 list.

Fixed. Also: I like WWDBTSES.
I do like how in Pas' analysis of why it's the worst list ever, there are only two albums out of ten that he really has fundamental problems with.
Hahaha but it makes no sense! I didn't say the album sucked, I said

It's like a wild ride through the musical tastes of 4 different people. People who like Black Sabbath so much don't like Beck just as much. Or Eminem. It doesn't follow logic!

He'll delete that list once he gets older and pretend it never happened. Just like I just did with my list from 6 years ago. That never happened.

mod and I agree twice in a week? Whoa. Beardpocalypse!
Seriously, We Were Dead is one of MM's best albums. I know it's no Long Drive, but nothing is. MM has no bad albums. And I'm including Tube Fruit. :P
I agree, Reelist's list is not that bad. The eclectic nature of the list redeems it, if anything.
The Red Album had at least a few very good songs (Greatest Man, Heart Songs, maybe even Angel), but the rest of it doesn't work for me at all. I would also choose an earlier Weezer album. I think most people agree that the Green Album (which I still loved) was followed by a steady decline. Although I'm sick of most of its songs by now (Sweater Song and Say It Ain't So, especially), the Blue Album has some of the most incredible pop songwriting ever. "Holiday" and "Only In Dreams" are underappreciated.
That said, I named this thread 10 favorite albums for a reason. Favorites change. I know my current favorites list would definitely include albums from the last 2-3 years. I think a new album is a completely legitimate choice for a favorites list as soon as you've let it properly sink in.
Funny that Reelist's old post has sparked an entire semi-controversial conversation. Don't stop!
My current favorite 10, limit one per artist. Some of these I don't listen to nearly enough; others, way too much.

4. Sigur Rós - ( )
5. Imogen Heap - Ellipse
No More Stories and The Hazards of Love have been my two most favorite albums for years. They have stood up to an absurd number of listens and have grown on me more than I imagined was possible.
I could have chosen something else for #5, like a Bjork or a Múm or a Beatles. But I have to be honest and let the list relflect that I've listen to Ellipse many many times.
I might have even included a Paramore album, but none of them are consistent enough. If I could put together a Paramore compilation with "Hallelujah," "All I Wanted," "Careful," and "Be Alone," that could take #4.
