Title: Do I even like movies?
Post by: Derek on September 09, 2003, 08:18:23 PM
A loaded question, but having accumulated 200+ dvds, I find myself lookind at some titles and wondering why I purchased them. Perfectly respectable movies too, like the two-disc Lawrence of Arabia, which seems like a chore to watch. Other titles like Witness, The Usual Suspects, Terminator 2.........etc., etc..

I feel insecure when I think I want to get rid of these,( I'm not hard up for money, its just that I don't watch them) that I really don't appreciate movies as much as maybe I have deluded myself. And then I say, what's the point of getting rid of them? You have them anyway. Is it okay not to like Lawrence of Arabia?

Moral support, please.

p.s. If you don't have anything nice to post, please don't post anything at all.

I feel the same way at times, but only because I've usually just watched a couple of the wrong movies, and they depress me or piss me off and make me wonder what I see in movies in general.  But then I just look at or think about something from one of my favorite movies, and that's all the reminder I need.

There are a couple movies I wonder why I bought, but most of the ones I have in my still-small collection I own and watch for a good reason or several.  Sell the ones you don't want if you don't think you'll watch them again; otherwise, what's the point in having them?

You ask as though you need permission to dislike it. At the end of the day, movies are still art, and like all art comes taste. If a Lean film like Lawrence of Arabia, isn't your bag, then that's that. It doesn't mean you think its bad and it doesn't mean you think its good. It means its not your kind of movie. You don't dig it and we dig that.

Derek:
I know exactly what you mean.  I myself had a collection somewhere in the league of 200 dvd's, plus a shitload of laserdiscs.  I would stare at them every night and think 'what should I watch?' and end up deciding I don't like any of these movies, I've seen them already, then I watch nothing.  I hit rock bottom financially and needed some quick cash to dig myself out of the hole... so I sold the collection.  I made out pretty well all considering... but it probably was one of the worst decisions I've ever made.  I SO REGRET selling the collection.  There were a lot of good titles.  Sure, there's always a couple iffy purchases in the bunch, but hold onto to the stuff.  You'll be happier later.

SUCKS is an understatement.  Plenty of OOP criterions to boot.  The place where I sold them were initially telling me they couldn't take the movies, then after 5 minutes of looking through the box said "oh wow, you have a good collection.  Don't worry though, they're replaceable."  Well, it's been well over a year and I can't bring myself to re-buy anything I previously owned.  I managed to sell a few choice titles to some friends, but seeing them in their collections just feels... dirty.

Derek,

I understand. I bought discs on a whim before, then sold them later (T2 was one of them.  I also sold the OOP Criterion Robocop, [I was hard up for money and really regret that one]).

But out of curiosity, could you make a list of the discs you're thinking of selling?

i bumped this up after looking at my dvd collection and checking the "i just bought thread" and was wondering for the people who have 100+ dvds how do you decide what to watch?  has there even been a dvd you bought and only watched it once?  whats you're roptations?  do you always go through your dvds like watching the film [of course], then listening to the commentaries, checking otu the behind the scenes shit and stills galleries, etc...?

i am askign this because at one point i had a collectionnearing 300 titles and i realized that, while most [if not all] were great films, i just didnt watch them, so they sat on my shelf and colllected dust.  and i sold about half of that collection with only keeping my very very very favorites.  so now i am a bit more selective with what i buy.  i already rerad through the replies n this thread but i wanted more feedback  please.

I don't dislike 3 hour movies, but they're not always what I buy first.  Most of my collection is 90 minute movies or so.  I own those because to me that's short, and I usually watch those all the time.

I know what you're saying about it losing meaning after having so many, the one perk to having them all is I can lend them out and show great films to other people.  How much cooler can you be than to turn people on to some classic directors or to get people involved in film by just showing them movies?

I recently sold all of my non-special editions because I would be getting the newer editions sometime, and with the scratch, I picked up some new movies.

The cycle of life.

I was really broke earlier this summer and sold the majority of my DVD's. Around a hundred or so, but just the stuff that i knew I could always rent. I didn't get rid of any of the criterions. I kind of regret it, just cause it was nice to look at, but it's all superficial, and I still have the good and hard to find ones, plus I was able to buy booze.

And I know exactly what you are talking about, for years I tried watching movies that I didn't even like but thought I was supposed to. Now I just watch whatever I feel like. When I go to the video store I rent whatever I want and not what is supposed to be good but doesnt interest me. I've found alot of really great movies this way.

Oh the pain... I did the exact same thing back in May.  I was going to LA for the summer and I was desperate for cash, so I hocked my entire collection.  I'm so fucking pissed at myself for doing that.   I even sold out-of-print Criterion titles.  Curses.

Sometimes I think we blog ourselves down with foreign films and older films that we are consumed with watching what we should watch rather then what we want to watch.  It's a time like this when you need to pop in something like Jurassic Park and remember why you love movies.

Also, I find myself buying movies so I can show others a movie I want them to see (that I liked).

it's not even that ppl are buying things that they are "sposed to like" and find themselves not watching them. the biggest crime as i see it are the ppl who buy everything that is released every week. u know how in the I Just Bought thread there are like 10 posts in a row sumtimes with the same movie?

yeah.. dvds will never fill that void.

thats why i hav like 30 dvds, and 2 of them are doubles i'm trying to get rid of. buying things u will only watch once, if that, completely devalues ur collection. it makes a mockery out of it.

I think it's about the same with music.  I always look to my collection and almost waste more time thinking about what I'm in the mood to listen to than I do actually listening to it.

To remedy that problem, I just put all my songs that fit certain moods into playlists and just toss that bitch on random... unless I really do want to listen to a specific song.

But yeah, like SHAFTR said, I like to have rare DVD's so I can show them to people, especially people who are into film and have never heard of some of the hard to find titles... and sometimes man, it's nice to have loads of crap like commentaries and documentaries for when you've got a big day of relaxing and you just want to toss something in.

I still haven't watched some of my DVDs or some of the extras on some of my DVDs.  I don't have much cash to burn so I mostly buy what I want to keep.  The other day I looked at my collection to see if I wanted to get rid of anything and I came up with about 5 titles out of 40-50.

I do have a few that I have only watched once so far.  It took me forever to get around to watching LOA, since I wanted to watch the whole thing in one sitting.  I do know one thing, though.  I am buying Raging Bull.

well, as far as addictions go, it's not a bad one to hav.

but i always think, especially when we had that big penis size contest about all the movies ppl own, that if anyone actually saw all the movies they hav on their shelf, there is no way they could NOT be geniuses afterwards. i feel that just with my kubrick collection. enlightenment would be inevitable.

Unless I really love a movie, I don't buy the DVD if I can rent it easily. If I own the VHS from years back and don't care to have it improved to a widscreen DVD, I don't update my VHS. I actually prefer having movies like The Fugitive, Jurassic Park and American Pie 2 just on VHS. Thus the majority of my collection are the films I can't get a hold of easily. They are a lot of Criterions and other DVDs that I could never dream for the life of being able to rent anywhere. Also many times I cherish the DVD not just because of the film, but because of a commentary or documentary that goes along with it. Considering I am going to a film school soon, having these DVDs in a surplus I find to be very helpful. Just using Nextflix wouldn't be the same because if I had to write a paper or something with just a two week notice I may not always be able to get it in proper time. And also the mind is just fucking impulsive on wanting to watch a certain commentary.

in a conversation similar to this, i once compared films to cars(despite my genuine apathy towards the subject of them), and said that a person would not prefer a mechanically sound and technically 'perfect' vehicle to one, the backseat of which, they lost their virginity in. and my point through this metaphor was that you can find definite fault in a film, and compare two films with fact instead of opinion in order to define them as textbook 'bad' and 'good', but if you have no direct natural chemistry and emotional relationship to the film then it is like an adopted mother or a rich boyfriend your father approves of.

I don't even go to the movie theatre anymore, unless it's the cheap flicks. It's the price coupled with the fact that I am so afraid I am going to spend another 8 dollars on a shitty movie. And no movie is safe anymore, it may even be a movie by a trusted director, a movie with your favorite actor, there's just no guarentee that that my eight dollars will be put to good use. I realize I am being bitchy, and sometimes it's my own damned fault. (like going to see dude where's my car in theatre, not a proud moviergoer moment, i know, i know)

yeah once a year i like to look over my collection and do a little spring-cleaning.  i usually find 5-10 that i don't want anymore and i pawn them, you know a film or two i bought on a whim that sucked, or one that i really should have never bought because it wasn't nearly as good as i remember or even the odd dvd that is just a shame i bought in the first place.

lol, maybe i'm materialistic with the dvds but it feels cleansing.

I tried to do this recently and found that I didn't have that many DVDs I didn't want anymore.  Perhaps there have been 5-7 in all the DVDs I've bought since 1999.

This thread has inspired me and I am going to sell some DVDs based on this criteria:  Does the movie in question have something which I would like to see repeated in a film, either one of my own or another's.  Or:  can I say that another film does not better say what this film says?

Any that doesn't fit the bill is gone.  If I go through my collection with this mindset I feel like I can get rid of classics I am hanging onto for only the reason that they are classics.  Also I need to get rid of foreign films that do nothing but prove that I own foreign films.  Adios The Crime of Padro Amaro.

I somewhat believe in selling DVDs that have little value anymore to me, but I'm too much of an enthusiast to do so. I care enough about my collection where one day I'll surely be John Cusack in High Fidelity and catalogue my collection chronologically to when I bought them or saw them.

I never really thought about selling my DVD's, then I read the "I sold all my DVD's" thread and figured I could do without a few of them.  I pawned off a bunch, and then picked up some movies I had been meaning to buy.  I think it's better to have a sharper, tighter collection than keeping every DVD that comes your way.

The only one I'll miss is the Crying Game, which my small print clearly said will be purchased again in collector's edition form.

The rest are a combination of not good, overrated, and only marginally entertaining.  In the case of Platoon, American Graffiti, Deer Hunter, and the Exorcist - all of the above.

What kind of film snobs are you guys anyway?  The classics are meant to be questioned.  You guys are like a group of conservatives calling the critiquing of government policies un-patrioitic.

Look I was using snob as a compliment, or rather the lack of snobbery as an insult.

Also, there were many non-classics in the group I sold.  Do you think maybe I own more that I like?

Also, it is only coincidence that most of the movies I got for the trade-in are subtitled (don't know if you noticed The Third Man or not), seeing as how they are all, with the exception of Shoot the Piano Player, expensive, three of them Criterion and one a box set.  I bought Shoot the Piano Player because I already own The Breakfast Club.

Now go count your goddamn dvd collection and stop being a fucking ass about these non-important issues.

I've used the word snob twice here, I think.  That is pretty excessive.  And both times it was meant in a light-hearted, playful fashion.

Quote from: Losing the Horse:What kind of film snobs are you guys anyway?
in ur crash review:
Quote from: Losing the Horse:Just to be sure, I brought along the old parental unit (impervious to artfilm snobbery and a glutton of hype)
and on ur second day of posting, from the Criterion news thread:
Quote from: Losing the Horse:Can a film snob give me a Hoop Dreams overview?
so yeah u do seem a bit obsessed with the word. besides, the joke is on u. no one has been talking seriously here, no one is attacking u as personally as u seem to be attacking everyone else. that makes u a psycho, sumone with a neatahwanta-level of unfounded hostility.

clearly u havn't been around long enuff to know who, if anyone, is a snob. yet u continue to generalize:
Quote from: Losing the Horse:
QuoteThat goes for the two who have already spoken, and those who wish to speak after.
Pretty sure I was clearly only talking to two people and a party of people yet to be decided.
"part of ppl yet to be decided"? so, basically, anyone who replies to u. hmm, is that a generalization that could potentially include everyone? yeah. take ur own advice, dude. relax, and

Quote from: Losing the Horse:stop being a fucking ass.

Okay but what you still don't seem to be getting is that I think the word "snob" is funny, as many people think the word "core" is funny.

But yeah.  I was taking things personally.  A man's movie collection should be not talked about, much like the Mrs.

I never thought this thread would go to 5 pages but here we are. It is really getting vicious in here. Losingthehorse-you will find quite the dirverse community here at xixax. Most of the time we make fun of each other, but it is all in good fun. I made the mistake early on for putting 'I agree' way too many times and now I'm labeled as that on here. So, what I do here is basically get information about movies and read the jabs that others take at me, especially Pubrick, I don't take it seriously because I know it's not the end of the world. I really hope you enjoy your stay here and I hope none of us have really offended you in any way.

By taking it personal I just meant that I thought some people were seriously trying to make an argument or enforce their opinions.  I wasn't offended.

Quote from: Walrus?I never really thought about selling my DVD's, then I read the "I sold all my DVD's" thread and figured I could do without a few of them.  I pawned off a bunch, and then picked up some movies I had been meaning to buy.  I think it's better to have a sharper, tighter collection than keeping every DVD that comes your way.

agreed!

but seriously LTH how could you sell north by northwest and the excorcist.  some of the others sure, but i watch those two at least once a year.

I got rid of the The Exorcist and I already regret it. My problem is that I'm much more likely to keep obscure foreign films over great domestic films, during the times when I do slight winnowing of my collection. I just can't part with the stuff that nobody else has ever heard of!

Two stories, one sarcastic and one true:

Sarcastic:  One time I went to watch The Exorcist, only I accidentally put in a video of my root canal last fall.  I didn't realize my error until after about thirty minutes in when I was like "hey, this is when I should be getting incredibly bored."

True story:  The first I saw The Exorcist I rented it from Hollywood video.  My sister and I had really wanted to watch it so we get all ready, wait for the night, turn off the lights and put it in.  Only it wasn't The Exorcist, it was Striptease.  The DVD had The Exorcist sticker on it and everything, but it was Striptease on the DVD.  Super weird.

As for North by Northwest, it's just not nearly my favorite Hitchcock.  Not nearly.

That's pretty exaggerated... Exorcist wasn't that bad...

Because my original post was a cheap shot.

Also, articulation is "2: the shape or manner in which things come together and a connection is made."  The way he expressed his idea through words to convince me of something.  You guys don't have that word across the ocean?
