So What Now Then?

The million dollar question; What next for PTA? I guess we still have the PDL DVD to look forward to, but I wish PTA worked a tad bit faster.

I remember reading an interview on Greg's site with Johnathen Demme who said that he loved PDL but wished Paul would get out of the Valley and do something different. Paul agreed that he would on the next one. He also commented on how it might be fun to adapt a book one day, which would be interesting.

I understand and respect his pace, I mean, not everyone has to be like Soderbergh and make two movies a year. I have a feeling that the next PTA picture will come much faster than PDL did after Magnolia.

I sure hope so. Im afraid that since PDL did less than stellar (financially) it would be harder for PTA to get a movie out, or at least a comprable budget. Maybe its best for him, but I hope its not another 3 years.... Hopefully he has a sense of anxiousness to get another made.

typo, must have been drunk.  Studios love it when their movies don't turn high profits, -lol. I'm going to stop talking now.

actually, PTA films do make tons of money in rentals---magnolia made more than it did in stores than in theatres.  films with more awards tend to be more popular at rental stores.

So let's all pray that PDL will be a HIT in rentals :P I doubt that, well... maybe the few losers - the general BOXOFFICE audience, let me rephrase: 75% of the people - that rent at blockbuster see the name of Adam on the cover and think its a nice one to rent....

PTA's movies don't turn huge profits, and studios love that.

Studios love that he doesnt turn huge profits? hmmm. I think what you mean to say is they like the notoriety and prestige he brings the studios. I am sure they want to still make a profit. Say they gave him $60 mil to make a movie and it only made back $2 mil, I think they wouldnt have a problem giving another director a shot over PTA after that. Remember what happened after Spielberg and 1942?

Remember on Greg's board, that Marvin The Martian guy said that PTA's next would be that animated "Jurassic Park" in space thing, didn't he? But anyway:

Let's take the case of director Victor Salva. 'Who?' you may ask.

Victor Salva wrote and directed "Clownhouse" in 1988, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival. But...

Also in 1988, he confessed to five felony counts of sexual relations with a twelve year old boy who he videotaped in sexual situations. He was then convicted as a child molester.

Then in 1995 Victor wrote and directed "Powder" (which Disney financed, by the way). And went on to write and direct "Jeepers Creepers" (with Frances Ford Coppola as an Exec. Prod., who is Victor's mentor, helping him get "Clownhouse" made) and is now doing its sequel.

I don't think PTA has anything to worry about.

Of course you make the case of 'you're only as good as your last film', but Scorsese's films haven't been box office hits either ("Kundun" anyone?), and the man continues to get films made 'cause people want to work with him, actors and producers, as is the case with PTA.

Yeah, but all of us here in the Bible Belt know that everyone in Hollywood is going to hell anyway, so naturally those hellfire-smoke-smelling fire-breathing degenerates are going to forgive him of something like that since they all do that anyway, don't they?

He's probably a Democrat, too.

So....what you're saying is that there won't be a "Land Before Time" meets "Apollo 13" project in PTA's future?

Thank you,
you know how many people I've tried to tell this to and they won't believe me?
"they'd never let someone like that work again".
but it DID happen.

If PTA ever does 'fall from grace' I hope he doesn't come back to make shitty horror films.

It will be interesting to see what PTA has in store for us...I think all of his movies have differed so greatly that it's hard to tell.  Ummm, maybe a bad example...but look at the movies Ed Burns has written and directed...they are all kinda of the same, about relationships and how people deal with them, generally speaking.  I personally love Ed Burns films.....I am probably in a minority there though.  Anyways, my point is....What constants do you find in a PTA film?  None...except maybe the setting (with the exception of Sydney).  Sure the films are based in the great Valley...but other than that there aren't a lot of distinct themes.  Sure relationships in a general sense, but his films aren't anywhere near the same plane, as say Ed Burns' films are.  And now look at PDL...gotta love it....but how would you place a genre on it....a romantic comedy?  I don't think I could place it anywhere.  It's a comedy, a drama, a good guy/bad guy, or even has some musical feel to it (without the actuall singin'...lol...doesn that even make sense?)  So Now Then.....I think no matter what PTA does he will surprise the shit out of us all, and I am convinced he can take anything and make it great...the guy loves and knows good movies and it shows tremendously in his work.

my 2 cents
