just in case anybody hasnt seen this list.  i thought you tarantino fanatics might be interested to know the mans Top 10 (well, technically 12).  but if you wanted to get a hint of his influences here they are...

-THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY (Leone)
-RIO BRAVO (Hawks)
-TAXI DRIVER (Scorsese)
-HIS GIRL FRIDAY (Hawks)
-ROLLING THUNDER (Flynn)
-THEY ALL LAUGHED (Bogdanovich)
-THE GREAT ESCAPE (Sturges)
-CARRIE (De Palma)
-COFFY (Hill)
-DAZED AND CONFUSED (Linklater)
-FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH (Chang)
-HI DIDDLE DIDDLE (Stone)

interesting that Howard Hawks is QTs favorite director.  this list is from Sight and Sound.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

I think it is hilarious that he voted for Coffy on Sight & Sounds list.

yeah, it is.  but its kind of cool that he doesnt try to put on a snobby like "foreign films are the only films" type thing and just gave his HONEST top ten favorite flicks.  very cool.

In all fairness, my "top ten" changes every time I say it. Not that I like the earlier movies less...its just I name off the first 10 movies I love that come to mind. I'm sure it's the same for QT. Before he said that, they were discussing Blow Out which is no doubt why it was on his mind.

Blow Out was such a dissapointment for me.

Punched out. And almost peed on.
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

As a note: A lot of people voting for Sight and Sound never really give their personal top ten lists because they know many movies they think are the best stand no chance with this poll and alter their list in accordance to what has been popular in Sight and Sound past so their vote counts more.

Blow Out is a great film and I always recommend it.

Blow Out is De Palma's best film and one of the best films of the eighties, an era where not many had the imagination to goof on Hitchcock AND Antonioni and create something so full of zesty cinematic life in the process.

Nancy Allen was like a breath of fresh air from another era; a snappy comedienne possessed of both sex and a great sense of humor.
""Money doesn't come into it. It never has. I do what I do because it's all that I am." - Morrissey

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."
