John Waters can currently be seen peeking out from the pages of Entertainment Weekly's "Top 50 Cult Movies" with, perversely enough, his fave "tasteful" movies by the likes of Visconti and Bresson.

""Money doesn't come into it. It never has. I do what I do because it's all that I am." - Morrissey

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

What's next for you?

JW: I'm writing this movie about sex addicts, because I haven't had one with any sexual themes in a long time. I like it, because all sex looks surreal. Anyway, it's about sex addicts in blue-collar America and their search for dignity called A Dirty Shame, which is something people's parents say a lot in Baltimore. If they hear about something bad, they'll mutter, "Well, that's a dirty shame." And I like that expression, because it's really old-fashioned. People would say, like, "Do you know so-and-so? It's a dirty shame." "She's a whore." [Laughs.]

I will always adore John Waters for acclaiming Woody Allen's Interiors, too. He's a very dapper and refined gentleman, in his way (this actually has not much to do with the Interiors thing, more with the things he's said/written and the way he is in person).

I also watched Desperate Living again recently. Not my favorite John Waters movie, but well worth revisiting.

i've never seen a meyer film, but i'm fascinated with the idea behind them. i'm looking for them on laserdisc on ebay and just lost an auction for faster pussycat and motor psycho, but i've said before that come june, beneath the valley of the dolls is coming to the big screen. i hope it lives up to my expectations.

waters is, has, and always will be the greatest. i'm really tired.

New Line is Putting on Some More Hairspray
Source: Variety

New Line Cinema will produce a feature remake of Hairspray, completing a 16-year full-circle journey from the modestly budgeted John Waters cult movie, starring Ricki Lake, to the Tony-winning smash Broadway musical and now back to a big screen musical. New Line co-chairmen and co-CEOs Robert Shaye and Michael Lynne confirmed to Variety that the new film will be a priority development project aiming for a 2006 release.

Set in Waters' beloved native Baltimore during the 1960s dance TV craze, Hairspray centers on zaftig high school hairhopper Tracy Turnblad as she graduates from outsider to celebrity trendsetter. Along the way she stars on "The Corny Collins Show," wins the heart of resident hunk Link Larkin and kicks down the barriers for black and white integration on local television.

Based on Waters' original script for the 1988 movie, the play's book was written by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, with musical score and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. O'Donnell and Meehan will adapt their existing book for the screen. In addition to composing the score for the film, Shaiman will produce the songs and serve as music supervisor. The next step will be to attach a director.

Isn't Meyer the guy who edited his own films? They were all like B-movies, right? Kinda like a Jack Hill kinda guy. Like the stuff Roger Corman produced.

Yes, he made lots of low budget films featuring women with abnormally large breasts such as Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Faster Pussycat Kill Kill and Vixens.  He made his film debut in 1959 with 'The Immoral Mr.Teas', the first 'nudie' film (soft- core sex film) to make a profit (over a million dollars), which led to a string of self-financed films that gradually became more bizarre, violent and cartoonish.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.
