For a fun side thread  how about we try to recast Paul Thomas Anderson movies. The main course here is that we can make our alternative casting calls through any age.  You can make an alternative Hard Eight based off the time of release or a version that came out in say 1982.

For The Master in 1954 if I were calling the shots I would pick Marlon Brando for Freddie Quall and Orson Welles for Lancaster Dodd. Not confident about the rest of the cast but I'll try working on it when I ponder more on this reshoot.

I love the idea of Brando and Welles in The Master.

I'll go for Punch-Drunk Love, 1950, James Stewart and Celia Johnson.

I was going to say Jimmy Stewart for PDL. With Alec Guinness as Mattress Man.
He held on. The dolphin and all the rest of its pod turned and swam out to sea, and still he held on. This is it, he thought. Then he remembered that they were air-breathers too. It was going to be all right.

Brando is a great choice, but I’d have loved to see Montgomery Cliff as Freddie with Orson as Dodd.

If Inherent Vice was made in the 1970s:
Elliot Gould as Doc.
Robert Duvall as Bigfoot
 Jane Fonda as Shasta
Barbra Streisand as Sortilege

A couple of random recasts I thought of:

James Mason as Reynolds Woodcock.
Jack Nicholson as TJ Mackey(like 1970s peak Jack)
Jack Lemon as Jim Kurring
Edward G. Robinson as Sydney

I agree with Monty Clift as Freddie but Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand as Shasta and Sortilege? I can't see that at all. Tuesday Weld as Shasta if IV is made in 1970.

1932
The Master

Paul Robeson as Freddie Quell
Emil Jannings as Lancaster Dodd
Joan Blondell as Peggy Dodd
Clark Gable as Clark

1932 is before WWII but are we imagining or are we imagining

If Boogie Nights was made in the mid-late 70's John Travolta would have owned it as Dirk Diggler.  Faye Dunaway would make a accompanied Amber Waves.

John Cazale would be fitting for either of William H. Macy roles if BN or Magnolia were filmed in the early part of the seventies.

Remake of Sydney in which...

Samuel L. Jackson is now perfect for the role of Sydney.

John Boyega as John
Awkwafina as Clementine
Mahershala Ali as Jimmy

In cameos, Josh Brolin takes the Robert Ridgely role, Jesse Plemons takes the Philip Seymour Hoffman role, and Philip Baker Hall plays the "Sydney Cinematic Universe" version of Jimmy Gator.

Late 60s version of Punch-Drunk Love starring Jerry Lewis as Barry, Anne Wiazemsky as Lena, Dennis Hopper as Dean the Mattress Man, Sal Mineo as Lance, Elaine May as Elizabeth, Timothy Carey as Walter the Dentist.
Everyone has a heart and it's calling for something
And we're all so sick and tired of seeing things as they are...

So many things here that I hate so much, but this is pretty good:

Punch Drunk Love (1973):

Dustin Hoffman as Barry Egan (Adam Sandler)
Lynn Redgrave as Lena Leonard ( Emily Watson)
Gene Wilder as Dean Trumbell (Phillip Seymour Hoffman)

(Should be Sissy Spacek as Lena, though)
