If I could move the night I would
And I would turn the world around if I could
There's nothing wrong with loving something you can't hold in your hand
You're sitting on the edge of the bed, smoking and shaking your head
Well there's nothing wrong with loving things that cannot even stand
Well there goes your moony man
With his suitcase in his hand
Every road is lined with animals
That rise from their blood and walk
Well the moon won't get a wink of sleep
If I stay all night and talk

Yearly reminder that the Oscars are always bad and there’s no point getting worked up about it.
That's what fiction is for. It's for getting at the truth when the truth isn't sufficient for the truth.

Agreed, but just a few quick complaints...

Uncut Gems was utterly robbed, which tells you everything you need to know about how boring and predictable these voters are.

Knives Out should've gotten a lot more love.

Joker leading the pack makes me want to punch things. Joaquin winning for it, and not the other amazing work he put out last decade, is shameful.

Willem Dafoe definitely should be up there for Lighthouse.

1917 is the boring choice and will probably win, and its fine. It's The Artist of this year. The great ones will live on regardless of Oscar attention.

I still think it was a particularly strong year for film.

i know it’s not you guys, but there is a general consensus among Safdie fans that Uncut Gems isn’t their strongest. i was worried it’d be just me but no it’s common. frankly Uncut Gems noms wouldn’t have elevated the platform and would have in fact fit in perfectly well along with other boring and predictable noms

I actually agree. Much as I love Uncut Gems and Good Time, I still think Heaven Knows What is their strongest. Not sure how many others would agree, but it's my truth.

I'm just slightly less disinterested in the Oscars this year than last.  (Last year was awful.  I literally didn't even watch the ceremony for the first time.  Ever.  In my life.)  I think there was only one or two films last year I was interested in, and this year there are 3 or 4 or 5 I could work up a little thrill for a win.  Jojo, Irishman, Toy Story 4 were the nominees I responded the most positively to.  Ford & Ferarri and Hankies Mr. Rogers were mostly entertaining...   (No noms for "Maiden" or that nut butter raptor, tho.)

I've been yelling at Oscar choices since "The Artist", I think.

A few this year I haven't seen yet (1917, Little Women, a few others.)  So many I found overrated:  Hollywood, Gems, Pain, Marriage, Parasite.   Finally watched Joker.  Thought it was mostly...OK.  I guess I went into it with a "show me" attitude after all of the praise and vitriol it received.  Wasn't as good as the praise, nor as awful as the outrage.  [shrug]
"Trying to fit in since 2017."

in the big picture your support of nut butter raptor was essential and meaningful
