i thought "oh wow, how'm i going to make this list?" there are loads of great 60s movies. i traveled to the helpful-as-always criterion.com and, confirmed:

i'm not close to listing all of the 60s gems --

2 or 3 things i know about her
the exiles
red desert
2001: a space odyssey
il posto
faces
au hasard balthazar
the leopard
lord love a duck
jules and jim
daisies
loves of a blonde
lola
the knack…and how to get it
i am curious (yellow)
therese and isabelle
david holzman's diary
peeping tom
fists in the pocket
cul-de-sac
eyes without a face
the naked kiss
danger: diabolik
je t'aime je t'aime
at midnight i'll take your soul
fighting elegy
army of shadows

*curious note: kes is 60s. i listed it in the 70s, so don't trust me, imo

viewer support for the 50s to appear

[edit] i mean, i was trying to remember what i left out, and i left out 2001 in the first draft. ffs. you can help me people

Oddly I feel like the 1960s is the decade I’ve least explored. Personal faves:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Army of Shadows
Cape Fear
L’Eclisse
Fail-Safe
The Graduate
Last Year at Marienbad
Lolita
Midnight Cowboy
La Notte
Pale Flower
Playtime
Point Blank
Psycho
Red Desert
Rosemary’s Baby
Le Samourai
Satyricon
Seconds
The Silence
They Call Us Misfits
The Trial
The Warped Ones
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Yellow Submarine

and more and more...

101 Dalmatians
The Apartment
The Battle of Algiers
Billy Liar
Blast of Silence
Bonnie and Clyde
Cruel Story of Youth
Le Deuxiemme Souffle
Le Doulos
Dr. Strangelove
Elmer Gantry
L’Enfance nue
Faces
Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!
The Fire Within
Funeral Parade of Roses
Gertrud
A Guide for the Married Man
Hiroshima, mon amour
The Hustler
I Am Cuba
Incubus
Ivan’s Childhood
Knife in the Water
Last Summer
Leon Morin, Priest
The Leopard
A Man Vanishes
The Moment of Truth
Mr. Freedom
Once Upon A Time in the West
Persona
Purple Noon
Rapture
Splendor in the Grass
The Swimmer
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?
Through a Glass Darkly
Winter Light

I want to see Sergey Bondarchuk’s 8-hour, 70mm adaptation of War and Peace (1966), but will hold out because the current SD transfers are less than stellar. There was an 8K restoration effort underway at some point but word on its progress has dwindled to zilch.

The following is a series of clips from the film set to Ravel — the sheer scale of the scenes in the latter half of the video is mind-boggling:
