Colorado shooting at 'Dark Knight' opening leaves 12 dead
Colorado police have revised the death toll to 12 in the Aurora movie theater shooting at a midnight showing of 'The Dark Knight Rises.' The suspected gunman is in custody, but police are searching for explosives at his apartment and the Aurora mall.

A gunman opened fire early Friday at a suburban Denver movie theater on the opening night of the latest Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," killing 12 people and injuring at least 50 others, authorities said.

The gunman, who is in custody, entered through the emergency exit, stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. MDT at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora.

"Witnesses tell us he released some sort of canister. They heard a hissing sound and some gas emerged and the gunman opened fire," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said at a news conference.

President Barack Obama released a statement Friday morning, in which he says he is "shocked and saddened" by a deadly shooting at a suburban Denver movie theater. He is urging the nation to "come together as one American family."

Police, ambulances and emergency crews swarmed on the scene after frantic calls started flooding the 911 switchboard, officials said.

Officers came running in and telling people to leave the theater, Salina Jordan told the Denver Post. She said some police were carrying and dragging bodies. The Denver Post has a live blog following the events.

Officers later found the gunman near a car behind the theater.

"A gas mask, rifle, handgun at least one additional weapon (were) found inside," he said.

The suspect was taken into custody, but no name was released. Oates said there's no evidence of any other attackers. There was also no immediate word of any motive.

The suspect spoke of "possible explosives in his residence. We are dealing with that potential threat," Oates said

Police were at the Denver-area apartment and had evacuated other residents of the building. Oates did not say whether any explosives had been found.

He said police also checked for explosives in the parking lot and at the Century 16 theater and secured those areas.

Moviegoers spoke of their terror as violence erupted and people around them fell victim.

Bejamin Fernandez, 30, told the Post that he heard a series of explosions. He said that people ran from the theater and there were gunshots as police shouted "get down!"

Frenandez said he saw people falling, including one young girl.

Jordan said it sounded like firecrackers until someone ran into Theater 8 yelling "they're shooting out here!"

Hayden Miller told KUSA-TV that he heard several shots.

"Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming," he told the station.

Hayden said at first he thought it was part of a louder movie next door. But then he saw "people hunched over leaving theater."

The police chief said 10 victims died at the theater and four at area hospitals.

At least 24 people were being treated at Denver area hospitals.

Eleven people were being treated at the Medical Center of Aurora for gunshots and ranged from minor to critical condition. Two others walked in to be treated for tear gas contamination.

Denver Health had seven victims — one in critical and the rest in fair condition.

The youngest victim reported was a 6-year-old being treated at Children's Hospital Colorado, where a total of six victims were taken. Their condition wasn't known.

Two people in critical condition were rushed to nearby Swedish Medical Center, spokeswoman Nicole Williams said.

Aurora is on Denver's east side and is Colorado's third-largest city with 327,000 residents. It is home to a large Defense Department satellite intelligence operation at Buckley Air Force Base, as well as The Children's Hospital, the University of Colorado Hospital and a future Veterans Affairs hospital.

So sad. This will taint the whole experience of the movie for me- I probably won't even be able to see it in a theater. Thanks a lot, asshole.

They've cancelled the Paris premier that had been planned for tonight. No word on any statement from Nolan or any of the cast yet, and hopefully there won't be. This shouldn't taint the movie they made. Response from Warners is enough.

I do wonder though how/if this will effect the box office? I can imagine that lots of people will probably want to give it a while to disassociate the film from the sickening news. I'm probably not going to see it for a while anyway because I'd rather wait until the proper IMAX near me has it, but this makes me in even less of a rush anyway because I don't want the experience of the film to be tarnished by this.

Very terrible what happened. I hope the mass murderer wasn't inspired by the shootings in Norway last summer though. On sunday it's one year ago it happened.

last month i watched peter bogdanovich's targets for the first time. it's about a sniper who goes to a movie drive-in and starts shooting random people. it was deeply disturbing, and the idea of it becoming a reality is truly nightmarish. my deepest condolences to the friends and families of the victims.

on the question of box office, it doesn't seem likely that the movie will significantly suffer from this event. the film has already sold so much on pre-sale tickets and, frankly, prolonged periods of buzz and hype is likely to dominate an isolated incident for such a movie. some people won't go for the first weekend, but cancelled screenings is likely to cause the most harm. personally, it's not a movie i have much interest in.

Even eerier to think he might have been inspired by Bane. He was wearing a gas mask and body armor.

No, but similarities like the one I pointed out above will severely tarnish the image of this film as 'just harmless entertainment.' People will still go, but goddamn is it going to be a different experience from now on..

"Dark Knight Rises" director Christopher Nolan just released the following statement regarding the massacre in Colorado:

"Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of 'The Dark Knight Rises', I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community.

I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime.

The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me.

Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

Yes, that movie sticks with you.
There is a place in this area that has those big tank things like the ones where the guy starts shooting people on the road and every time I see those I think of the scene in Targets.
I am Torgo. I take care of the place while the Master is away.

are there gun rights people right now advocating for the rights of sikhs to bear arms which could've prevented the temple shooting?

I thought that Dane Cook's joke was really stupid and insensitive. Not even worth repeating...

but Jeff Ross made a funny comment to Seth Green on the Roast of Roseanne. It won't be aired out of respect for the victims and their families. So, worth repeating:

“Seth, congratulations. This is actually a great night for you,” Ross said. “You haven’t gotten this much attention since you shot all those people in Aurora. ... I’m kidding. You are not like James Holmes. At least he did something in a movie theater that people remember!”

A copycat of the Auroa shooting almost happened  at a night showing of TDKR a few days ago in ohio. A man was caught entering the theater with a bag full of ammunition and a 9mm hand gun. He said it was for protection.

New Haven attorney arrested for taking loaded gun to ‘Dark Knight’ screening defends actions

A prominent New Haven attorney arrested for bringing a loaded gun to a late showing of the “Dark Knight” Tuesday turned the incident into a referendum on the city’s police department.

Sung-Ho Hwang, 46, showed up for a late night screening at the Criterion cinema downtown with a gun in his waistband, raising suspicions and fears that a copycat killer was ready to strike.

Hwang, who lives in downtown New Haven, is a well-known immigration attorney in the city and the President-elect of the New Haven County Bar Association.

In a statement emailed to the Daily News, Hwang said he has a permit to carry a weapon and felt he needed a gun for security while walking home alone at 1 a.m.

Hwang added that “no posting at Criterion states that weapons are not permitted. As far as the law is concerned, I have a right to carry there.”

Hwang’s actions come in the wake of the shooting attack at a midnight showing of the “Dark Knight” July 20 in Aurora, Colorado that left 12 people dead and 58 wounded.

A potential copycat attack at an Ohio theater was thwarted Saturday when police intervened before a man sitting in a “tactical position” could cause any harm.

But Hwang defended his actions declaring New Haven ‘the murder capital of Connecticut,’ which prompted him to carry the weapon for his own safety. But he found few supporters at City Hall. “Just because its legal, doesn’t make it right,” New Haven Mayor John DeStefano said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon, adding that there should be a gun registry program for cities.

After receiving multiple complaints from patrons about a man openly carrying a handgun, theater staff called the police. Cops searched the theater asking moviegoers to exit with their hands in the air while being searched, according to the press release.

When they located Hwang, they took action.

"Officers identified the suspect and with weapons drawn, ordered the suspect to put his hands up," the press release said. "He remained in his seat while using his cell phone. He did not comply with the officers commands, and was taken into custody by force. Officers removed a loaded handgun from the small of his back.”

Hwang was then handcuffed and removed from the theater.

“Everyone in the theater responded to the requests of the police officers except for the individual involved, the police had to take action,” New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman said in a Wednesday afternoon press conference.

Current Bar Association President Irene Jacobs did not reply to a message left by the Daily News asking for comment.

“There still are behaviors permissible under the law,” said Mayor DeStefano, “we, as a community, need to discuss our priorities as a city.”

Hwang faces two charges stemming from the incident: interfering with police and breach of the peace.
