Couple of real odd announcements came about today. I'm starting a thread to keep track of these. Never thought these would come about...

Early Julio Medem Films Heading to Blu-ray
Independent distributors Tanelorn Films have revealed that they are planning to begin releasing on Blu-ray in Q4. The distributors will release three early films by acclaimed Spanish director Julio Medem (Lovers of the Arctic Circle, Chaotic Ana): Vacas (1992), La ardilla roja a.k.a The Red Squirrel (1993), and Tierra a.k.a Earth (1996). Preliminary release dates are yet to be revealed.

do they feel obliged not to pick their big films since they're releasing an obscure one?

Robert Mulligan's The Nickel Ride (1974) is being released with John Frankenheimer's 99 and 44/100% Dead (1974) on DVD on December 13, 2011. I've heard The Nickel Ride mentioned in the same breath as crime flicks like Point Blank (1967), The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Outside Man (1972), and The Outfit (1973). Both films were previously unavailable on DVD.

Awhile back I tried watching Lips of Blood on Netflix, but it didn't have subtitles. That was weird. Looking forward to seeing these.

^ Marquee. That is perfect out of context.
He held on. The dolphin and all the rest of its pod turned and swam out to sea, and still he held on. This is it, he thought. Then he remembered that they were air-breathers too. It was going to be all right.

Wow those guys sound like total dumbasses.

At least the guy being interviewed. He says he and his co director had never heard of the national film registry before 2008,  then you think ok they must be noobs, they must know nothing about films, but then they reveal that they considered themselves quite knowledgeable about film!

Not only that, they could have been excused as just a couple of dumb kids who don't yet know what would be considered knowledgeable.. Then it's revealed they are in fact in their FORTIES. And they say they knew nothing about Facebook or twitter etc either and that their 26 year old niece had to educate them.

I don't see a long career in filmmaking for these guys.

Sleepless

Randomly, I happened to catch the last hour of These Amazing Shadows on PBS yesterday afternoon. I didn't really rate it. For unchallenging Sunday afternoon viewing it was fine, but otherwise I wouldn't bother. Essentially it was a catalogue of clips from films which are in the registry. Here's Christopher Nolan listing three films from the registry which inspired him. Here's John Lasseter doing the same. Here's a guy laughing about Let's All Go To The Lobby. Pure fluff.
He held on. The dolphin and all the rest of its pod turned and swam out to sea, and still he held on. This is it, he thought. Then he remembered that they were air-breathers too. It was going to be all right.
