Who didn't see this coming?

'Balloon boy' mother admits it was a hoax

Source: The Guardian, http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/24/balloon-boy-mother-admits-hoax

The mother of Falcon Heene, the six-year-old American boy who sparked a major rescue operation after he was wrongly believed to have been carried away inside a helium weather balloon, has admitted the incident was a hoax, reports say.

Mayumi Heene told a sheriff's investigator that she and her husband, Richard, "knew all along" that their son was hiding at their Colorado home, according to court documents.

The papers, which were made public in the United States, also suggest the parents had told their three children to lie to the authorities and the media.

According to the affidavit, Heene said the plan was to make the family, who have appeared on the US reality TV show Wife Swap, more marketable to the media.

The couple called police and TV stations last week to say Falcon was in a homemade balloon that had accidentally launched from their backyard in Fort Collins.

TV news channels in the US and much of the world carried live footage of the silver, saucer-shaped balloon drifting thousands of feet in the air above rural Colorado, pursued by rescue helicopters, after authorities were told Falcon was seen climbing into the base of the craft shortly before it took off on 15 October.

But when the balloon eventually came down around 50 miles from Fort Collins it was empty. Searches of the Heene's home uncovered nothing, prompting fears the boy had fallen out mid-flight. But Falcon then climbed down from the rafters of the garage attic where he had been hiding.

An apparently straightforward good news story took a curious twist when, during a live CNN interview with the Heene parents and their three sons, Falcon was asked by his father why he had not responded to shouts from his worried family. "Um ... You had said that we did this for a show," Falcon replied.

The court document said the parents devised the hoax about two weeks earlier.

"She and her husband had instructed their three children to lie to authorities as well as the media regarding this hoax," it stated.

But Richard Heene has continued to deny that the incident was faked.

His lawyer and his wife's lawyer had not seen the document before it was made available to the public yesterday through the Larimer county courthouse, the Coloradoan newspaper reported.

The Larimer county sheriff, Jim Alderden, has said he would recommend charges including conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and making a false report to authorities.

Some of the most serious charges each carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a $500,000 (£305,000) fine.
"Should I bring my own chains?"
"We always do..."

Palin to Join Fox News as Contributor
The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee is taking up a spot as a regular commentator on Fox News Channel.

2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is joining Fox News as a contributor, the news channel announced Monday.

The former Alaska governor, whose book, Going Rogue: An American Life, became a bestseller weeks before it was released and remains No. 2 on the New York Times bestseller list, has signed a multi-year deal to offer her political commentary and analysis across all Fox News platforms, including Fox Business Channel, FoxNews.com and Fox News Radio.

She will also participate in special event political programming for Fox Broadcasting.

"I am thrilled to be joining the great talent and management team at Fox News. It's wonderful to be part of a place that so values fair and balanced news," Palin said in a written release.

Palin will also host periodic episodes of Fox News Channel's "Real American Stories," a series exploring inspirational real-life tales of overcoming adversity throughout the American landscape that will debut in 2010.

"Governor Palin has captivated everyone on both sides of the political spectrum and we are excited to add her dynamic voice to the FOX News lineup," said Bill Shine, executive vice president of programming.

Prior to joining Sen. John McCain on the 2008 presidential ticket, Palin was the first woman to serve as governor of Alaska, taking the oath in 2006. As governor, she worked on improving resource development, education, health and transportation and infrastructure development.

Prior to holding the office of governor, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla City Council in Alaska as well as two terms as the mayor and manager of Wasilla, and worked as an oil and gas industry regulator.

Owned by News Corp, Fox News Channel is a 24-hour general news service covering breaking news as well as political, entertainment and business news, and has been the most-watched cable news channel in the country for eight years running. It features the top 13 programs in cable news and can be seen in more than 90 million homes.

I've seen her apperances so far and I got the usual of what to expect from her, but there has been some constructive criticism of Palin by Fox viewers. Bernie Goldberg (a steadfast conservative) was being interviewed by O'Reilly and he admitted that she's not at a point where she is making intelligable points about a topic. As Goldberg explained, she still acts as if she is in campaign mode and just going over the issues she cares about, like that's all she can say. O'Reilly admitted she's still limited and his viewers have been writing in about that, but he thinks she will transition into the role and become better. I don't think she will.

The best part in the Palin to Fox experiment was when Juan Williams was on Hannity last night. He's usually gun shy about bashing Palin because he wants to be somewhat fair as a left leaning guy on Fox, but he went on and on about how he wants Sarah Palin to enter the election of 2012 because Obama would crush her. It was funny because Hannity acted outraged as if no one should dare slam his idol on his own show.

But I recommend everyone watch the Beck/Palin interview. It was beyond creepy. Beck talked to her like she was a prophet and when they exchanged comments about God and his importance in America, I wanted to yell out that Beck's Mormon God is not well liked by any Christian religion in America, but only in Fox's world is all religiousity the same.

I had forgotten about this thread and don't really get why the Palin stuff is added to this one, but the title "Breaking News (Fucking Kids)" made me think this title was some insensitive joke about a child-rapist.

This is what Palin was born to do though, right?  Be an idiot on television.

SUCCESS!

We'll use it whenever we want to discuss current breaking news. Or now another place to talk Polanski.

didn't want to make a palin thread... she's not currently in the running to be leader of the homeland... and it's in the headlines when i posted it (or so i thought... my phone didn't update the headlines for a few days and i thought it was fresh when i read it). it's a scary story, not a funny one, so i didn't put it in stupid news reports.

haha just looked a bit at her stuff...

I always put myself on the line in the past to try and tell people that George W. Bush wasn't "a moron" per se... that it would be quasi-impossible to get so powerful while being moronic.

Well, I guess I was wrong, because Sarah Palin got pretty high while seeming to be extremely moronic.

krugman also wrote a great piece about Obama's mistakes, which combined with Stewarts lacerating comments absolutely boggle my mind. it's so obvious what needs and needed to be done to set america in the right direction, but the dems and obama are just too big a PUSSY to actually fucking do it.

The Democrats won their elections by being Democrats, and now they're trying to hold onto their position by being moderate Republicans.  And they're surprised that it's not working.  Do the shit you were elected to do, and people will keep electing you.  Fail, and they will replace you.  It's that fucking simple.
The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong in the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.

How about this -

K2 mirrors marijuana; on the rise in St. Louis area
By Joel Currier
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
Thursday, Feb. 04 2010
Some know it as fake pot.

Users say the leafy green herbal blend gives them a high similar to marijuana.

And for now, it remains legal in Missouri and Illinois.

It's called K2. Police say the brand of "herbal incense" is growing in
popularity among teens and young adults in the St. Louis area.

But a proposed K2 ban in Missouri aims to kill the buzz about the herb before
it really fires up. Meanwhile, police and school officials say they are
concerned about its unknown health risks as it becomes more widespread. Kansas
could soon become the first state to outlaw it, after its House followed the
Senate and approved a bill Wednesday targeting chemicals used to make K2.

Missouri state Rep. Ward Franz, R-West Plains, has introduced a bill to add the
chemical compound in K2 to Missouri's list of illegal drugs.

"We've got to do something, because somebody's going to be using this, driving
a vehicle and killing somebody," said Franz, who says K2 use is widespread in
the Springfield, Mo., area.

The dried herbs come in 3-gram packages of various flavors, including "Blonde,"
"Pink," "Citron" and "Summit." At least three shops in the St. Louis area sell
them for about $30 per pack.

"It's taken off like wildfire," said Joe Kuhlenberg, 40, co-owner of the
Hypnotized smoke shop in Florissant. Kuhlenberg says he has carried K2 for
about four months and estimates he sells at least 100 packages a week. "The
stuff just flies off the shelves."

K2 herbs contain synthetic chemicals that experts say imitate marijuana's
effects on the brain. Other herbal blends such as Spice, Blayze II or Red Bird
are available, but merchants and users say K2 is the hottest brand now because
it packs a powerful, relatively cheap high.

"It's real popular," said Zach Baumstark, 19, of Lake Saint Louis, who recently
bought three packs at the South 94 Bait Tackle and Smoke Shop in St. Charles
County. He says he smokes it because it's a legal alternative to marijuana.

"I get an equal high (to marijuana), and it doesn't make me cough as much," he
said.

The Missouri Highway Patrol crime lab in Jefferson City tested K2 samples
submitted by police in Columbia and Springfield and found no THC, the narcotic
in marijuana, or any other illegal substances. But one of the samples tested
positive for synthetic cannabinoids JWH-018 and JWH-073, developed in the
mid-1990s by Clemson University researchers conducting lab experiments on mice
to test the compounds' effects on the brain.

Clemson professor John W. Huffman, whose initials give the compounds their
name, said the effects on humans have never been studied. Research on the
compounds suggests they are at least three times more potent than THC.

"I emphasize that this compound was not designed to be a super-THC," Huffman
said in an e-mail to the Post-Dispatch. "It should absolutely not be used as

a recreational drug."

Drug investigators with the Illinois State Police and the St. Louis city and
county police departments say they know little about K2 and don't believe it
has become widespread in the St. Louis area. St. Charles County sheriff's
deputies began researching it recently after finding a discarded K2 wrapper in
the parking lot of Francis Howell High School, said Sheriff Tom Neer.

"I'm hoping it's just trendy," Neer said. "If this compound has any effect
similar to marijuana, then it's certainly a concern."

Leonard Naeger, a professor at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, said
potential dangers of smoking K2 are not clear.

"I don't think it's gonna kill anybody," Naeger said. "But nobody knows what
this K2 stuff does, because it hasn't been out long enough for there to be any
documented studies on it."

K2 will be a main discussion topic at a meeting today of St. Charles County
school resource officers at St. Peters City Hall.

Authorities are concerned that the manufacturer of K2 remains a mystery.
Investigators say the blend first became popular in parts of Europe in 2008.
According to the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, some European and Asian
countries, including France, Austria and Germany, have outlawed some products
which contained the compounds JWH-018 and JWH-073.

Linda Weber, owner of the Vise shop in St. Peters, says she has been selling K2
to those 18 and older for about a month and knows people are using it to get
high.

"I tell them, 'If you feel like you're growing a third eye, you might want to
cool it,'" she said.

The packages, labeled "not for consumption," lack any information about where
it's manufactured. Doug Franklin, 50, a Springfield, Mo., supplier to several
vendors in the St. Louis area, insists K2 is a safe product that gives
marijuana users a legal alternative. But he won't reveal where he buys it.

"We are producing such an ungodly amount of sales from K2 that it's beyond
comprehension," Franklin said.

Dan Allder, 27, of St. Charles, began smoking K2 a month ago after hearing
about it from friends. But he's not surprised police and lawmakers want it off
the streets.

"It's just an alternative to weed is the way I look at it," Allder said. "It
would be nice if the government could just keep their fingers out of it."
