Am I seriously that out of touch, or are these really that bad?

BULL-SHIT.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

I'm glad to see In Bruges get some love for Colin and Gleeson, but when Cruise and Downey Jr. get love for the awful Tropic Thunder, it just cheapens any and all love anyone else got.

cruise/rdj doesn't bother me. they were both great.

what does bother me:

lack of milk love (no best drama/screenplay/director?)
no brolin for W
no 'let the right one in'
nothing for lost
entourage is still getting nominated for doing the same shit over and over
vicky cristina barcelona is not really a comedy

Man, I know I haven't seen any of these fucking movies yet, but goddamn, they're probably not that good. Franco getting a nomination is interesting and kinda cool, but whatever.

And no Lost is seriously a fucking shame. Season 4 was so awesome. I'm going to see Milk today, so I'll probably more outraged by everything else later.
WWPTAD?

TOM CRUISE FOR TROPIC THUNDER?????!

it wasn't a good performance. but even if you thought it was, there is no way it's one of the top 5 supporting male performances this year.

He threw on a fat suit and acted like Tom Cruise.

it is 100% based on the fact that he's tom cruise playing something tom cruise wouldn't normally play. if someone else who looked and sounded exactly like tom cruise but wasn't had given exactly the same performance, he would not have been nommed.

Go to the 4:45 mark to hear the audience's reaction to the Cruise nod:

Tom Cruise: More of Les Grossman in the Works!
Source: E! Online

Forget Tom Cruise's reaction to his Golden Globe nomination for his work in Tropic Thunder for a moment. Mr. Cruise can't help but think of how his foulmouthed alter ego, Les Grossman, would react to the news.

"Les would probably say something unprintable," Cruise told me today in an exclusive interview. "First thing when you hear about that character is, just what would that guy say? It would have to be something unprintable."

And it sounds like this isn't the last we've heard from the balding, hairy-chested studio boss. Read on for all the Grossman details...

"I've talked about doing different videos with the character," Cruise said. "I've started working with Ben [Stiller] on it, and we've kind of talked about different things to do. We were gonna do some in our free time, but we haven't found the free time…yet."

He doesn't rule out a full-length feature film centered on Grossman: "He's a fun character," said Cruise, who will next be seen in the real-life WWII thriller Valkyrie. "I gotta talk to Ben, but there could be more to do with that guy."

Grossman's future aside, Cruise said of the nomination, "I'm really thrilled. Kate called me, and family and friends. It's just very exciting."
“Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” - Andy Warhol

i don't buy this. whether tom truly deserves the nom is one thing, but the whole "if it were someone else was playing the role or directing the film you wouldn't like it as much" beef (i.e. if ron howard directed there will be blood, we'd think it was just okay) is a lame one.

you're absolutely right. but this is a painful exception. and i'm not saying 'if willem dafoe played it' or anything like that. that would make it a different performance. i'm just saying this is all about who cruise is outside the movie.

They also just want him to show up. It's the biggest ratings boosting nomination they have.
My assholeness knows no bounds.
