Title: Godfather Part II HELP!
Post by: finlayr on June 01, 2005, 09:09:03 AM
Warning:  Godfather Part II SPOILERS

Okay, so I need some help with the Godfather Part II.  I've watched it again for the first time in a few years and I'm a little confused for some reason.  It's about a story thread.  This is what I think is the story...

Michael Corleone
Frank Pantanglia
The Rosato Brothers
Hymen Roth

These are the characters my problem deals with.

Frank Patanglia (wrong spelling; the guy with the grey mustache and loud voice) was assassinated in a pub by Hymen Roth and The Rosato Brothers men.  He didn't die, though.  While in the pub, one of the men walks up behind Frank and says "This is for Michael Corleone", making us and Frank think it was Michael who ordered the hit.
We find out later on that Michael didn't order the hit and that Roth and the Rosato Bros were just trying to make Frank think it was Michael.

Questions:

What was all of this over?
Why did they want Frank to think it was Michael?  So it would stir the shit?
Why didn't Frank think it WAS Michael since he was told it was in the pub.

Confused, please help

in case u havn't noticed this is now in Other Movies.

idle chatter is the one forum that is not movie related. and, uh, a thread about the Godfather movies (while amazing that there is not one already) i think qualifies as movie talk.

don't go nuts over it, it's a basic message board occurrence.

getting back to your question, what i never understood was why it would matter that they frame michael corleone for the hit if they're just going to kill frank anyway? the fact that he lives is coincidental.

feel free to insult my intelligence with what is probably an obvious answer

Paramount prepping new Godfather?
Source: Moviehole

Remember those rumours about a possible “Godfather 4”? Remember how they said it would star Anthony LaPaglia, and be filmed in his native Australia? Well, those rumours were a pile of horse dun… apparently.

The good news is - there might be another “Godfather” film – or two.

Thanks to the success of the book “The Godfather Returns” – and the newly commissioned “The Godfather’s Revenge” – Paramount have decided to try and transfer those literary beauties to the big screen. Though the studio snapped up the rights to the books – both written by Mark Winegardner – quite a few months back, its only this month that “Returns and Revenge films seem to have been ramped up to active -development status – meaning they’ll probably get underway within the next year” a rat within the ranks at the studios, tells Moviehole. “I don’t think the new film is going to be done in Australia [though], no”.

The casting problem with “The Godfather Returns” is that the story is set between “The Godfather” and “The Godfather II” – yep, its been quite a few years since Al Pacino and company gave life to those characters, so it’d be almost impossible to fluke it with CGI – so unless someone can turn back the clock…

“They’ll re-cast naturally”, the studio leak says. “I guess you’ll notice it about as much as Brandon Routh stepping in for Christopher Reeve in Superman [Returns] – a film that was supposedly set between Superman II and Superman III. Difference being here of course, all the characters will probably be recast”.

The second film, “Godfathers Revenge”, will much easier to cast because it’s a “prequel, about how Tommy Hagen came to shack up with the Corleone’s”.

No word whether Andy Garcia will get a look-in in any of the films, but the actor, who co-starred in “The Godfather Part III”, said recently that he’s surprised Paramount haven’t done anything “Godfather” sooner. "The irony and fascination for me is that - with all the movies Paramount takes risks on each year - they have this franchise people are desperate to see and they won't green-light it”, said Garcia. (Garcia was said to have suggested to director Francis Ford Coppola that Leonardo Di Caprio play Sonny Corleone in a “Godfather” prequel).

Here’s my two-bob : I see the films happening, but I see them being VERY different beasts, - almost disparate - to the original films. They may feature the same characters, they may even retread over familiar territory, but they’ll be more contemporary re-working’s if anything. I guess, in some respects, they have to be – today’s main cinema-going audience weren’t even around – and I’m predicting eight out of ten 17-year-olds haven’t even seen the original films – when Brando presented us with an offer we “couldn’t refuse” all those years ago.

No, very bad things could come of this. I'm not ruling out the possibility of these being good films but strike one: return. Strike two: revenge. Comparing it in any way, shape, or form to Superman returns only enhances my skepticism. If Coppola helms, I'll be more inclined to cough up ticket money. If not, they better get a director I already have a great respect for or I might just skip these things altogether.

Who am I kidding? I'll see them no matter what. But they still might suck balls.

Are you talking about the xixax awards? I was okay with A Woman Under the Influence winning. I voted Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, but I was okay with A WUTI winning.

sry, false alarm guys. I was just watching last night and having never seen it I was like "damn, this shit's good as fuck, how did it not win best picture?" because it just seemed like a sequel would never get that kind of credit, but this was a rare case. Being drunk and all I figured it'd be easier to complain about my ignorance than actually do my research.

Here we are six years later and no one ever answered the original question.
Funny, cuz I just watched this movie a couple weeks ago and I've already forgotten the answer.

As for the original question, it's pretty simple:

this was over the public war between Roth and Frank AND the secret war with Michael (beginning of the movie assassination attempt against Michael)

I think the whole ''Michael corleone says hello'' deal is for bystanders ears. The people around will repeat that Michael killed frank which will lead to internal war between the faithful to frank and the faithful to Michael. Divide and conquer.

Finally, Frank DID think it was Michael. The original poster really didn't understand the story of the film at all. Frank goes to testify against the Corleone family but Michael has Frank's brother come in from Sicily to scare him off doing so. Frank later dies STILL thinking it was Michael all along. That's why he commits suicide, Tom implies that his family in sicily will be well taken care of if Frank takes 'responsability' for betraying the Corleone. Which MEANS  in mafia terms that if Frank doesn't kill himself his family in Sicily will suffer.

You have to understand that if the mafia tells you ''do something and we will help you'' it means : ''if you don't do this we will destroy you''. They probably won't help you or take good care of your family etc.

SO YEAH, here you go.

Haha, I had completely forgotten about that (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=7957.0).  I must have really been in a bad mood that day.  In my defense, I wasn't getting laid like at all in 2005.

Was Hedwig a funny poster??? I don't remember him so much, except his awful avatars and being a respected member.

at his peak, hedwig was one of the top 5 funny posters who ever lived/wasted their lives posting here. but he often was too subtle in a pozer way, ultimately he will be remembered for taking the sensible position in every argument he entered.

that thread is also notable for containing the only thing silias has ever said that made me laugh..

He was officially banned from the world on april 29th 1980.

Ha! I forgot about that thread. It also contains Samsong's (dead-on) parody (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=7957.msg196757#msg196757) of my posting circa 2005. For the record, I still think Gerry is the worst. Only now I think it with proper capitalization.

I usually get a Godfather/70s Coppola kick twice a year.

Man, if I made Godfather 2, I would feel like the greatest filmmaker in the world. Crazy year for film that year though, Godfather II, Chinatown, The Conversation and A Woman Under the Influence.

It's a damn shame that Pacino didn't win best actor that year- I think his work in that movie might the greatest performance of all time (then again, maybe Art Carney in Harry and Tonto might be transcendently amazing, I've never seen it) . Same deal with Gena Rowlands in her role. And of course, De Niro was fantastic and his win is a positive one but it's an even greater shame that John Cazale  wasn't nominated (heck, Duvall too) and didn't win.

The Godfather is better. I rewatched them in January and thought I would prefer Part II again, but The Godfather is just a perfect movie.

It's always a hard choice but I think II is the better film. It's technically superior and it's fascinating to watch Michael to head further down this very dark path (and watching Fredo emerge as one of the film's central emotional points). The stakes are as high as ever but it's a darker, more ominous and sinister film. Of course, I absolutely still adore the first one. It's warmer overall and it feels like a more gradual film whereas the second one (while longer and featuring a flashback storyline) is ultra-focussed on the immediate plot. But yeah, both are great and I don't think anyone's ever had a decade like Coppola.
