'Matrix' co-creator ready to be whole new woman

April 29, 2004

BY BILL ZWECKER SUN-TIMES COLUMNIST

Sounds as though Larry Wachowski -- one half of the Chicago-born, super-successful brother team (along with Andy Wachowski) that created the "Matrix'' films -- is about to make a life-altering move.

According to those close to the extremely reclusive duo, Larry is about to finally become "Linda.'' Wachowski, who has been living and dressing as a woman for some time, reportedly is preparing to take the final step and have sex-change surgery. As always, it was impossible to get any comment from the press-shy Wachowskis, but several longtime friends of the Rogers Park native confirm Wachowski is planning to complete the process of becoming a woman.

Wachowski's sexuality and sexual preferences have made headlines since his nine-year marriage to Thea Bloom turned into an ugly divorce battle over the past couple of years. During courtroom fights over the millions generated by the "Matrix'' films, Bloom made veiled reference to her husband's proclivity for cross-dressing and his taste for less-than-conventional sexual activities. Bloom accused Wachowski of being "extremely dishonest with me in our personal life,'' and blamed the couple's initial separation on "very intimate circumstances concerning which I do not elaborate at this time for the reasons of his personal privacy.'' Numerous press reports have highlighted a long-term S&M dominatrix relationship Wachowski maintained with the owner of a Los Angeles area sex shop.

Besides, I find the logic that we should feel free to ridicule and mock anything we don't directly identify with to be pretty ill-considered... This kind of thing is unfortunate for the personal traumas the people involved have to go through, but it is very fortunate that he's (evidently) finally ended that trauma for both himself and his ex-wife and taken a brave and necessary step.

How do you tell a joke about this?  I mean you can say anything, but really nothing is funnier (i.e. - more twisted) than actually thinking about what the hell is going on.

BILL
No,  Neo?

JOE
No, one of the directors.

BILL
Oh well, with all that money,  he can change his sex anytime he wants , can't he? HAHAHAHAHA, oh... I'm priceless, my wife says I should do stand-up.

THE END.

It's really not funny, though. The fact that no one identifies with this is exactly why it shouldn't be mocked. Whether or not you think sex change operations are a valid solution is a moot point; I doubt most, if any, of us have ever been so dissatisfied with ourselves that advanced cosmetic surgery has been an option we'd consider.

Don't get me wrong, I can find humor in the subject -- case in point, I'll laugh during 'Hedwig,' or during 'All About My Mother.' But that's a clear case of laughing with and not at.

So far, all the jokes have been about the relation between him and The Matrix franchise. I don't see anything wrong with joking this way, nor do I see anything wrong with anyone wanting to change his sex.  Takes all kinds of people to make a world.

Looks like a whim. I don't know,  I also don't see a reason why should I feel sorry for making fun of this.  Seriously,  having a sex-change must be the hardest thing in the world.
(I don't see a lot of shit , hehe)

FRANCIS:
Or sister. Where was I?
REG:
I think you'd finished.
FRANCIS:
Oh. Right.
REG:
Furthermore, it is the birthright of every man--
STAN:
Or woman.
REG:
Why don't you shut up about women, Stan. You're putting us off.
STAN:
Women have a perfect right to play a part in our movement, Reg.
FRANCIS:
Why are you always on about women, Stan?

STAN:
I want to be one.

REG:
What?
STAN:
I want to be a woman. From now on, I want you all to call me 'Loretta'.
REG:
What?!
LORETTA:
It's my right as a man.

JUDITH:
Well, why do you want to be Loretta, Stan?
LORETTA:
I want to have babies.
REG:
You want to have babies?!
LORETTA:
It's every man's right to have babies if he wants them.
REG:
But... you can't have babies.
LORETTA:
Don't you oppress me.
REG:
I'm not oppressing you, Stan. You haven't got a womb! Where's the foetus going to gestate?! You going to keep it in a box?!
LORETTA:
[crying]
JUDITH:
Here! I-- I've got an idea. Suppose you agree that he can't actually have babies, not having a womb, which is nobody's fault, not even the Romans', but that he can have the right to have babies.
FRANCIS:
Good idea, Judith. We shall fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother. Sister. Sorry.
REG:
What's the point?
FRANCIS:
What?
REG:
What's the point of fighting for his right to have babies when he can't have babies?!
FRANCIS:
It is symbolic of our struggle against oppression.
REG:
Symbolic of his struggle against reality.

whoa just today, the topic of sex change had been brought to my attention three times (average number of times per day the topic of sex change gets brought to my attention: zero)--once on the net, and twice a TV, all within the same hour.  They ran a trailer for a documentary on sex change on Showtime, and the Sundance channel had just finished showing a movie about that.  Weird.

I watched Barry Lyndon on Saturday, and on Sunday NPR played music from the movie twice separately.

That's a Jungian thing. You tend to be more perceptive about things while you're fresh about something. For example, when you learn a new word, the next day you'll probably read something that has that word and you'll actually understand it, unlike previous times, where you simply ignored the word.

That's also the reason why a lot of people think that they can communicate with dead people.

You can only take that skepticism so far, though... it's a little oversimplifying. I've seen Barry Lyndon before and remember the music well, so how can you say I've ignored it every other day that it's played twice on the radio? And I'm not sure Jung would completely agree with you. What about the collective unconscious?

You said you watched Barry Lyndon on Saturday and listened the music on Sunday. So obviously you were more perceptive toward things related to Barry Lyndon.  And I'm guessing you don't remember what you dreamed on Saturday , that dream may have to do with it.

By the way , I don't like Psychology. I just like this Jung character.

I'm not saying the increased perception theory is wrong... it's just limited.

I don't think that seeing Barry Lyndon and listening to its music as in this weekend's short span has happened to you before, has it?

And maybe , this time , you payed a lot more attention to Barry Lyndon.
You even started a visual defence on it on the Kubrick forum.

He's a lesbian in a man's body, just like on The L-Word.  :)  Cool.  This all reminds me of John Waters' excellent quote: "We don't need sexual 'orientation'- we need sexual anarchy." I find people who refuse to be enslaved by their biology, whether they're gay or transsexual or drag queens or heterosexually adventurous, very compelling.

SNT, it's your right to find someone's bravery "ridiculous" if you prefer that; what makes many things brave is precisely that they appear ridiculous to small-minded naysayers with little imagination who have no problem calling something brave "ridiculous." You kinda proved my point.  :)

Your part 'o the world has it right. Jung is good for a lot of things, but (in my opinion) he's been ruined by crackpot reinterpreters. He's well worth reading and has some very interesting things to say (particularly for people with creative mindsets), but never, ever before Freud. He has this large cult that's sort of degenerated his work into a bunch of New Age/pseudomystical hooey, which is probably an American thing.

Basically, if you're gonna do Jung, just do Jung and ignore those who merely riff on his ideas. He's still second to Freud (at best), though. The thing about Freud is that people have built on his work in very intriguing and important ways, whereas with Jung it seems to have been a downhill trajectory from the original work.

So it all makes sense now...
I had no idea that Jung was  that popular,  but that crackpot reinterpeters  part sounds very possible. I hope I'm not one of them.
Truth to be told, all I know about Jung is what I read from Man and His Symbols, me being a layman. Now that I think of it, I have never talked about Jung with anyone until xixax.

a sex change question for those in the  know:

when he undergoes this surgery does that mean that someone will delicately chop off his penis and then  throw it away and then drill a 3in. vertical canal where his penis use to be ..then have breast implants ..then shave , then have a girl-esque haricut..then have his adam s apple removed ..and learn to be more sassy.?

i think he's up to step three, so he may hav already undergone electrolysis to remove unwanted hair, and should hav been "cross-living" a couple of years and taking female hormones. he should start to grow tits before they chop his thing off and shove it back inside.

a sex change question for those in the  know:

when he undergoes this surgery does that mean that someone will delicately chop off his penis and then  throw it away and then drill a 3in. vertical canal where his penis use to be ..then have breast implants ..then shave , then have a girl-esque haricut..then have his adam s apple removed ..and learn to be more sassy.?

A good, technically descriptive answer to this question lies in a very funny joke toward the end of this fantastic movie (which, actually, was for transssexuals what Cruising was for gays- not anything to get worked up over except they came at a time/social context when they were bound to be misunderstood. Looking back, they're both actually very cool and, in their ways, very progressive):

The duo will now just be known as "The Wachowskis", dropping the "brothers" part of their name. It is expected that Larry, now called Lana, will actually speak to the press about this for the first time, but not until after the Speed Racer film is out. The current feeling is that his sex change could hurt the family image the Speed Racer film is going for.

It is also expected that Andy will do all the press for the Speed Racer film, with Larry/Lana staying in the background for the above reason.

Dateline NBC is still rumored to have exclusivity of Larry/Lana's first public interview, but it has to be on his terms, not theirs.

More on this as we get it!

Or I can just borrow it from you, since you're a self proclaimed self made billionaire who still downloads tv shows from the net instead of buying them.

How much could it be?

Why are you so obsessed always with how much money I have? I was talking about you. I wouldnt pay for your operation cause I dont even know you.

And I usually pay for the shows, unless they are not available for download (like HBO shows). I'm usually one of those idiots that pays for everything, unlike most people. One thing you'll learn someday is that the more money people have, the cheaper they are. Most people I know have more than what I have and they dont spend it.

oh my god, once again.
Kal, nobody here gives a shit about how much money you have or pretend to have.  but as a poster who frequents this board like five times a day who wouldn't stop talking about it, it gets really fucking annoying.  You're not even like the other rich kids on this forum, 'cause you lack taste or anything interesting to say, and really don't have any insight as a self-proclaimed successful person.  It's easy to hate someone who is dumb, but you're just too easy 'cause you also claim to be rich.  nobody believes you or gives a shit.  It's even more frustrating to see you trying to flame somebody.  You become shamelessly stupid.  I feel sorry for you, I really do.  In the beginning I thought it was some kinda class thing--how my clients and friends and loved ones would love the comfort you keep on professing, and how they're much more interesting, attractive (I'm assuming you're douchebag ugly since you won't ever post your picture, not even someone looking like me has posted the most embarassing ones of myself), sincere, thoughtful, and hard-working than you seem to be.  Though now I've realized it's got none of that, it's that feeling that wells up in me long after my pity has run dry.  I wish I could meet a douchenuzzle like you in real life, because, believe me, I'd say the same exact to him.  But the people that I meet in real life who pretend to be rich are usually teenaged boys and girls or young parents with serious shit in their past.  Maybe you're one of those too, but everything you've said has either lacked the substance of an actual victim, or is just seriously annoying.  Now I'm going to let you know how I really feel about you, instead of taking jabs.  I've got a pork shoulder in the oven, it's gonna take 35 minutes, so I've got time.  Or maybe you're a thoughtful, generously wealthy human-being who just happens to have poor taste with poorer taste in the words you choose.  I'm still willing to give you a chance.  However, for the next hungry 35 minutes at least, and perhaps from now on even, I'm not gonna tolerate your bullshit.  You've made time-wasting tedious by contributing nothing to the good and bad citizens of this world who just wanna waste a few minutes of their day typing about things they enjoy.  Those minutes have added up, just like "wealth", as you falsely proclaim.

Actually, I love wasting time, that's why I come here in the first place.  However, you've made it somewhat of a drag everytime you mar it with your stupidity.  Again, you might be a decent fellow, I've been wrong about a lot of things.  However, when you've shown no decency, but only tedious stupidity, I can only assume that you're as stupid as your words.  if you're not sure what my fucking problem is, either read my earlier post or read this one: back off on your stupid ramblings about your alleged wealth.

No Sex Change for 'Matrix' Director Larry Wachowski
Source: FOX News

Larry Wachowski is still a man.

The co-director of the "Matrix" movies was rumored to have had a sex-change operation recently. Internet sites started buzzing recently that Larry was now called Lana. Someone even edited his Wikipedia entry to that effect. The Wachowski Brothers, they said, were about to become the Donny and Marie of filmmaking.

I must say, returning from a two week trip to Africa, I found this news rather startling.

Of course, Larry Wachowski — who’s reportedly into a lot of wild, tough stuff — has encouraged this kind of speculation among his fans and the press. He dates a dominatrix and publicizes it.

He let his wife’s vague angry language in their divorce filing make it seem as though as he was on the verge of a huge announcement. Either he was becoming a woman or turning into a pygmy.

Either way, Larry Wachowski’s purported sex change is right up there with "Paul Is Dead" and the "Beaver Died in Vietnam."

And it’s not true.

On Wednesday, I had lovely chats with people at the sound studio in Germany where the Wachowskis have been making the live action version of the Japanese cartoon "Speed Racer." The folks I spoke to got quite a kick out of the whole thing.

I asked one man in building operations, "Have you seen Larry lately? Does he have breasts now, as rumored? Is he wearing a dress, wondering if it’s making him look fat?"

Laughter. “He looked like a man to me,” was the response.

And what about this Lana business? Said one woman who worked in the "Speed Racer" office: “On the call sheets, it still says Larry. There’s no Lana.” She laughed too.

Rats! Where is the gossip when you need it? An assistant to one of the producers got on the phone.

“None of it is true,” he said. We spent several minutes rehashing all the stories that were floating around out there.

Finally, I did speak with Joel Silver, who executive produces the W Brothers' movies.

“It’s all untrue,” he reconfirmed for me. “They just don’t do interviews, so people make things up.”

Disappointed? I know. I am too.

But I think Larry, er Lana, has gotten the last laugh, at least for now.

Wachowskis Reaching for Plastic Man?
It's not a stretch to believe this casting rumor.

We recently told you about a series of meetings taking place between Warner Bros. and DC Comics focused on bringing more of the publisher's superhero properties to the big screen. Now, there's a fresh rumor that one of those properties, Plastic Man, could soon be in active development.

A scooper for CHUD claims that producer and frequent Wachowskis collaborator Joel Silver dropped the Plastic Man bomb recently on a German radio show. Silver reportedly tipped that the Wachowskis will soon make the movie based on their decade-old screenplay, and that the comic book flick could even be ready for a 2009 release.

And guess who they're supposedly considering for the title role? None other than Neo himself, Keanu Reeves. All of this is unconfirmed, of course, but we could see it happening. The Matrix star was pegged by IGN as a good fit for the role in our 2003 review of the Plastic Man screenplay.

Wachowski Bros. to Direct New Superman Trilogy!?
by Erik Davis; Cinematical

There is a wild and wacky rumor right now, but according to a scooper over at AICN who watched a television interview with James McTeigue in Berlin, there might be some funky things happening to some of those much-hyped future franchises. The scooper, Ballack, reports back that McTeigue -- who mainly talked up his upcoming Ninja Assassin -- finished up with news that if Warner Bros. doesn't let the Wachowski Bros. go with Plastic Man as their next project (and they may not, according to McTeigue, because of a "major shake up of projects at WB"), then they could be the guys who reboot the Superman franchise.

Wha??? Supposedly (so says McTeigue), the Wachowskis have been approached about Superman and are "currently reviewing their options." McTeigue, who was supposed to aid the brothers in the second unit department on Plastic Man, says that if they do take on Superman, he'd most likely serve in the same capacity on that flick. Plastic Man, however, is a passion project for the Wachowski siblings, and so expect them to fight hard to make it a reality. McTeigue also noted that Bryan Singer is done with the Man of Steel, and that he's moved on to the Logan's Run remake.
Title: Re: wachowski thread ready for a title change
Post by: Gold Trumpet on February 12, 2009, 12:54:59 AM
Good. If only for the reason I don't think the Wachowskis respect the original Superman films enough to just copy them. Bryan Singer was guilty of pure flattery with his update. It was ridiculous. The series can be rebooted, but it needs to take a complete 180 turn.

Besides, it makes thematic sense for them to be interested. If the character Neo of the Matrix is to be comparable to any super hero, it would be Superman. The seeming invincibility and savior worship associated with both characters has some interesting similarities.
Title: Re: wachowski thread ready for a title change
Post by: Kal on February 12, 2009, 01:20:03 AM
I loved Singer's version and would like him to continue. Everyone and their mom knows the origins of Superman and all that, so I think its more interesting to keep going from here to where the character could go next... not so hard considering there are trillions of comic books... even Smallville is finding shitty ways to continue the story and keep people like me (die hard Superman fans) watching.

The Wachowski's need to do something original for themselves, go back to their roots with The Matrix and create something good (even though they stole The Matrix from somebody).

The Wachowskis' Next Film Under Way?
Arianna Huffington reveals pics from the set.
by Jim Vejvoda; IGN

Could it be that the Wachowskis have been secretly making their next movie? According to The Huffington Post's founder Arianna Huffington, they are.

In fact, Huffington tweeted yesterday that she was "on plane to Chicago to take part in the Wachowskis' movie on Iraq from the perspective of the future." She later posted pictures of her on the set against a green screen, showing what she is supposed to look like 90 years in the future. There are also pictures of her posing with Lana Wachowski (p.k.a. Larry Wachowski) and in costume.

/Film brought Huffington's tweets to our attention, while CHUD speculates that these set photos could merely be camera test footage. Meanwhile, Cinematical speculates that the project could actually be the Wachowski-produced adaptation of David Mitchell's third novel Cloud Atlas, which Tom Tykwer (The International, Run Lola Run) has been attached to direct.

And what is Cloud Atlas about exactly? Here's the novel's synopsis from publisher Random House: "A reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified 'dinery server' on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific Islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilization -- the narrators of Cloud Atlas hear each other's echoes down the corridor of history, and their destinies are changed in ways great and small."

Jesse Ventura spills about the Wachowskis' secret sci-fi film
Source: SciFi Wire

You may recall the weird news that pundit Arianna Huffington posted that she appeared in a top-secret futuristic sci-fi war movie being shot by the Wachowski brothers (of Matrix fame). Well, now comes news that former Minnesota governor and Predator star Jesse Ventura may have shot something as well.

Slashfilm reports:

Appearing on Tuesday's episode of the Howard Stern Show on Sirius/XM Satellite radio, the professional wrestler turned actor turned governor Jesse Ventura dropped word that he just got done filming a movie for the Wachowskis. When asked if he missed acting and would ever consider returning to the big screen, Ventura dropped the bomb shell:

"I just did one with the Wachowski brothers..."

Ventura explained that he didn't know where this film is gonna end up, to which Stern asked "What is the film?" Ventura responded: "I don't know..." Ventura revealed that they didn't have a script, and the whole thing was done ad-lib/improv.

"Wait til you hear what they did. They brought me, and they brought Arianna Huffington in after me. Arianna was there, and they had her looking like cleopatra. What they did ... Do you remember what John Travolta looked like in that horrible film Battlefield Earth? They put multicolored dreadlocks on me all the way to here. They gave me this crazy beard that was hanging down pointed, looked like Travolta, right? And they put a third eye in the middle of my forehead. Because what this is, is this is a hundred years in the future, and they wanted me to talk about the current war in Iraq and how I felt about it. And so I got to vent, looking like this maniac in this whole outfit."

Ventura said he didn't know what he was doing or what the movie is beyond that.

Weird, huh? Stay tuned for more ...

Larry And Andy Wachowski Shop U.S.-Iraqi War Tale With 'Hard R' Gay Love Story
By MIKE FLEMING; Deadline Hollywood

EXCLUSIVE: Little has been heard from The Matrix team of Larry and Andy Wachowski since 2008's Speed Racer crashed. I'm told they are circulating a new script that brings them back to terrain they covered in 1996's Bound, a heist film with a lesbian romance. This one's a drama that focuses on a "hard R" homosexual relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi. It's a cinema verite-style treatment that begins in the near future and then spans back over years that include the current war in Iraq. I've heard the siblings completed the script, want to direct it next, and that it is out to financiers. It sounds far afield of their trademark stuff, but then again, The Matrix seemed pretty far out when the siblings first pitched it. Will furnish more info when I get it.

The new Wachowski sci-fi film CN9? Here's why it's called CN9
Source: SciFi Wire

We're hoping that CN9, the new film from the Wachowskis, ends up more like The Matrix than Speed Racer. We're hoping that it treats its subject—the relationship between a U.S. soldier and an Iraqi in a near-future sci-fi setting—in a Hurt Locker kind of way rather than exploitatively. But meanwhile, we're also struggling to understand what the frak the title means!

According to worstpreviews, the Wachowskis are already casting what will be a "hard R" movie, with no word yet on when filming will begin.

But what does CN9 stand for?

The site speculates that the term may refer to the ninth cranial nerve, which is a glossopharyngeal nerve related to the tongue and the pharynx. We have no idea whether that's the take the Wachowskis intend, or how they'd spin it in a sci-fi way, but it certainly has us thinking.

We’ve Got Details on the Wachowskis’s Top-Secret Gay Iraq War Romance Cobalt Neural 9
Source: Vulture

For months now, Hollywood has puzzled over the Wachowskis (ne the Wachowski Brothers) and their Cobalt Neural 9 — a project so shrouded in secrecy that Hollywood’s talent agents groused they couldn't even properly advise their clients on whether to read for it. All that was known from various leaks was that CN9 is a cinema verite-style film, to be set in the future, centering on a love affair between a US soldier and an Iraqi one. But now, Vulture has obtained intriguing details about the script. Caution: major spoilers ahead!

First, if you don’t understand the title, don’t worry: Our spies who read the screenplay tell us it's gibberish designed to inspire debate as to its meaning; it appears nowhere in the actual script.

Secondly, part of the film takes place in the future all right — nearly a hundred from now. But its main story is told in Cloverfield-esque flashbacks by digital archeologists sorting through “found footage” from CNN and chips from old digital cameras from the US occupation of Iraq. The heroes are indeed a gay American soldier named (with little irony) "Butch" and an Iraqi soldier turned militant. Butch is endearing, young, and a ravishingly handsome Marine. Our spies tell us that he, "just wants to fuck and kill everything" in Iraq — until, that is, he falls in love with the Iraqi.

The two meet while Butch is on a combat patrol in Iraq during the second Gulf War, and soon enough, the two are engaged in graphically-described sex (actual line from the script: "They rut like animals behind this fence") albeit while disguised in burqas. The two soldiers’ relationship blossoms, and Butch begins to get to know his lover's family. But after he inadvertently draws attention to their ancestral home, disaster strikes. This tragedy radicalizes the pair and they become convinced that the only way to rid the world of evil is to kill the architect of the invasion, the then-President of the United States, George W. Bush. And so, during one of the president’s secret sorties to Iraq, they attempt to assassinate him.

Currently, we’re told that The Wachowskis are developing two projects simultaneously, and will shoot whichever gets financed first. One, of course, is Cobalt Neural 9. The other is their adaptation of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas, with Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) writing the screenplay and the Wachowskis producing and possibly directing a few of the novel’s six interlocking story-lines. (Unlike Cobalt, Cloud Atlas has already attracted stars like Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, and Natalie Portman, who are all attached, and James McAvoy, who has an offer outstanding.)

Cobalt Neural 9 would cost only an estimated $20 million, while their Atlas is a much larger blockbuster that would likely require studio financing to meet its expected $80 million to $100 million budget.

One rep we spoke to tells us that the Iraq movie will “never, ever” be made by a studio — but points out that with the money the Wachowskis pocketed from the Matrix films, they could easily self- or co-finance CN9 independently. Indeed, we hear the siblings had been planning to shoot in L.A., Germany, and Morocco as soon as next month, though that may have changed.

We'll keep you posted on further details, but the project may become harder to track: We’re told The Wachowskis are demanding that all interested agents come directly to the office of Warner Bros. casting executive Lora Kennedy to read the screenplay on her couch, and that, in the interest of secrecy, they plan to change its title again soon.

Halle Berry joins Natalie Portman in The Wachowskis' latest epic
Source: SyFy

The reclusive filmmakers behind The Matrix and Speed Racer are stocking their latest science fiction project with an Oscar-caliber cast, including Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman and Halle Berry.

Based on David Mitchell's 2004 book, which tells six interwoven stories spanning a thousand years—touching on New Zealand in the 1800s, Belgium in the 1930s, California in the '70s, London in the present, Korea in the near future and Hawaii in the distant, post-apocalyptic tomorrow—Cloud Atlas seems to have overtaken the controversial Gulf War-set gay romance Cobalt Neural 9 on the Wachowskis' to-do list.

In an interview conducted after a screening of her latest film, Frankie and Alice, Halle Berry let slip that she's set to start shooting Cloud Atlas this coming summer.

It sounds like an ambitious undertaking—but if you can find faults with any of the Wachowskis' films, lack of ambition isn't one of them.

Focus Features And Tom Hanks Sign On For Wachowski-Directed 'Cloud Atlas'
BY MIKE FLEMING | Deadline

Tom Hanks has become officially attached to star in Cloud Atlas, an adaptation of the David Mitchell novel that consists of six interconnected stories. The Matrix helmers Andy and Lana Wachowski and Run Lola Run helmer Tom Tykwer have signed on to write and co-direct the film. Warner Bros is set to distribute the film in North America, and Focus Features International has signed on to handle international sales and distribution of the film overseas. They will sell rights at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Shooting on the film will begin in September. The logline: An epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution. The film has been rumored for some time, with James McAvoy and Halle Berry among the actors who've been rumored to take part. The film will be produced by Five Drops' Grant Hill and Stefan Arndt, with Philip Lee exec producing.

Hugo Weaving Says He’ll Play 6 Different Characters In ‘Cloud Atlas’
Source: The Playlist

Are the Wachowskis ready to make good on the promise they showed those many, many years ago? After making the lesbian thriller “Bound” and the groundbreaking “The Matrix,” the siblings diluted their goodwill with two bloated, disappointing sequels and then flopped with “Speed Racer” (though the film does have its champions in certain quarters). On the producing front, while they scored with “V For Vendetta” they failed to deliver with “The Invasion” and “Ninja Assassin.” In the same vein, Tom Tykwer made a big name for himself with “Run Lola Run” and has failed to match that success since, with a series of films of decreasing quality culminating in last year’s truly awful “Three.” As the saying goes, go big or go home and for their next directing effort all three helmers are teaming up and getting together one helluva cast to adapt one of the most celebrated, and complex, novels in recent memory. David Mitchell‘s “Cloud Atlas” will get the Wachowski/Tykwer treatment with Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent all coming aboard. For those unfamiliar with Mitchell’s excellent book, the story follows six stories across time, which fold in on themselves: a 19th century notary on a Pacific expedition, a bisexual musician in the 1930s, a female journalist in a thriller in 1970s California, an aging publisher in London in the present, a clone in a futuristic dystopia, and a Pacific survivor in a post-apocalyptic world. So given the multiple storylines and time periods, the decision has been made that actors will be playing more than one role each in the film and Weaving has revealed a bit more about what we might expect. “That’s a project that’s really exciting because all the actors will be playing more than one role,” Weaving told the Herald Sun (via Filmonic). “I actually have six characters in the same film and they are all different people in six different stories.” Of course, who those characters are hasn’t been divulged just yet. Either way, for the Wachowskis who seem to raise the stakes on each of their films, “Cloud Atlas” may prove to be their most ambitious offering yet. No word yet on how the directing duties will split, but we’d love to see the Wachowskis get out of their futurist mode and try their hand at period material (though we doubt that’ll happen). Either way, this is probably the most exciting material the directors have worked with since their debut feature so we’re pretty eager to see how this one all comes together. No release date has been set, but Warner Bros. will be distributing the film and we’d guess we’re not going to see this until 2013. Shooting begins in September.

I disagree about Tom Tykwer. I haven't seen all of his movies, but The Princess and the Warrior was massively underrated/unnoticed, Heaven is superb, and they're both better than Run Lola Run.

They should have gone with Eddie Murphy. Actually, Tarantino should cast him in every role in Django Unchained.

The Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer's ‘Cloud Atlas’ Scores A Dec 6 U.S. Release Date & Almost 3-Hr Running Time Revealed
Source: Playlist

In a piece about the various financial comings and goings at Cannes, Anne Thompson has revealed specifics about the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer’s ambitious, Tom Hanks-led adaptation of David Mitchell’s multi-tiered “Cloud Atlas,” which screened on Wednesday for international buyers, including details on its running time and domestic release date.

Thompson first mentions the interesting details surrounding the film’s funding – initially the Wachowskis and Tykwer proposed that Warner Bros. finance the entire film (this was the studio, after all, that bankrolled the Wachowskis’ hugely successful “Matrix” films and considerably less successful “Speed Racer”). Warner Bros. passed, gawking at the $170 million production budget, and when they did, the directorial trio got lean (which included getting mega-budget stars like Hanks for peanuts), slimmed the budget down to $101 million, secured financing overseas, and according to Thompson, “got the movie made the way the Wachowskis and Tykwer wanted it on foreign pre-sales.” Oh, and Warner Bros. bought the domestic distribution rights for $20 million - nothing like having your cake and getting to eat it too, for a fraction of the price.

Thompson is reporting that the film clocks in at 2 hours and 44 minutes, which Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov let slide despite a contractual obligation to have the film come in at 2 and a half hours (or less). Quite frankly we’re amazing that the movie is that short – the novel, which cannot be recommended enough, consists of six interlocking stories that ripple out from one another and interweave in astounding ways (the stories cover everything from a paperback-y seventies thriller to a poetically post-apocalyptic tale of survival). In short: it’s a fucking epic. The script came in at well over 200 pages as well, so clearly a lot of trimming's been done.

What’s more, a stateside release date is being reported, with Warner Bros. opening the film in America on December 6th. This release date (in prime Oscar territory), along with the lax approach to the running time, indicates to us that the film is really, really good, and the fact that the movie is already finished means that Warner Bros. can screen it earlier and get the buzz rolling.

Warner Bros. Sets Release Date for Star-Studded 'Cloud Atlas'
Source: THR

The studio will also distribute the movie starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry, in the U.K., France, Spain, Australia and Japan.

Warner Bros. Pictures has set Oct. 26 as the release date for Cloud Atlas, the star-studded adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel directed by the team of Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer and Andy Wachowski.

The studio’s distribution chiefs – Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of international distribution – also announced Tuesday that the studio has acquired rights to distribute the film the U.K., France, Spain, Australia, and Japan, where it will be released in early 2013.

The movie, which stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Keith David, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Wishaw, James D’Arcy and Zhou Xun, got a positive reception when it was shown to foreign buyers at the recent Cannes Film Festival, and its late October date will put it squarely in the awards-season corridor.

“Audiences who have seen an early screening of Cloud Atlas have been elated by its powerful and inspiring story, as well as its breathtaking visuals.  An October release in North America is the perfect window to showcase this epic film,” Fellman said.

“We are proud to be distributing this remarkable motion picture in a number of key markets.  We look forward to working with these visionary filmmakers and the other international distribution partners to bring Cloud Atlas to moviegoers around the world,” Kwan Vandenberg added.
Tykwer and the Wachowskis also wrote the screenplay for the film and produced along with Grant Hill and Stefan Arndt. Philip Lee, Uwe Schott and Wilson Qiu served as executive producers.

Atlas will be released in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland by X-Filme-Verleih; in China by Dreams of the Dragon Pictures; in Hong Kong by Media Asia Group; in Singapore and Malaysia by Ascension Pictures; in Korea by Bloomage Company; in Taiwan by Long Shong Group; in Russia and Eastern Europe by A Company; and in other territories through Focus Features International.

Netflix Picks Up Wachowskis/ Georgeville Sci-Fi Drama ‘Sense8′ With 10-Episode Order
Source: Deadline

The Wachowskis’ new sci-fi drama project Sense8 has landed at Netflix with a 10-episode order for a debut on Netflix Instant in late 2014.

The series is produced by Georgeville TV, Reliance Entertainment/Motion Picture Capital’s TV studio, in association with J. Michael Straczynski‘s Studio JMS. This marks the first foray into TV series for the Wachowski siblings, the masterminds of The Matrix franchise, who are teamed with sci-fi veteran Straczynski (Babylon 5). Sense8 is described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted” that incorporates the Wachowskis’ storytelling style. “Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time,” said Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

Added the Wachowskis, “We’re excited to work with Netflix and Georgeville Television on this project, and we’ve wanted to work with Joe Straczynski for years, chiefly due to the fact his name is harder to pronounce than ours, but also because we share a love of genre and all things nerdy.” The duo, repped by WME and Circle Of Confusion, also shed some light on how the series was conceived. “Several years ago, we had a late-night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox Sense8 was born.”

I love that the Collider chooses to use "I" over the "editorial we". I know it's small but it fucking feels good. All other doesn't-matter publications, take note!

Wachowskis' New Sci-Fi Series, Sense8, Will Include LGBT Characters
The 10-episode series will stream on Netflix and include both gay and transgender characters.
BY PATRICK YACCO

After nearly a year-long wait, details about Lana and Andy Wachowski's television project with Netflix have finally been revealed, reports TVLine.com.

The program is titled Sense8, and the 10-episode series follows eight people who are linked by a violent vision. Although the characters are located all over the world, they share images of both the benevolent Jonas and the villainous Mr. Whispers.

Veteran science fiction writer J. Michael Straczynski, who was responsible for 1990s television program Babylon 5 and served as executive story editor on the Sci-Fi cult classic TV series Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, will serve as show runner.

Sense8 begins filming in June, with shooting locations ranging from the United Kingdom, Seoul, Mumbai, Nairobi, and Berlin to Mexico City, San Francisco, and Chicago. Cast members have not been announced yet, but roles for the series include a "closeted telenovela hunk" and a transgender blogger.

Other episodes will focus on a thief from Germany, an Icelandic party girl, a Korean executive, and an African bus driver.

Netflix has recently increased its production of original output over the past year, and other future programming includea a multiseries deal with Marvel Comics. The streaming network has released several shows with visible LGBT characters, such as House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black, which have in turn become breakout hits.

Exclusive: New Matrix Trilogy on the Horizon!
Source: Latino Review

Little bit of background before we get into the scoop. The studios M.O. has always been to deny any story before all the “pieces” are final.

For example, J.J. Abrams and the Khan denials, the new Star Wars trilogy, ID4 Sequels are all news stories broken by fan boy sites that were denied and ended up being TRUE. We can go on and on and with more examples but nonetheless, the studios and its reps will lie.

The scoop! For years people have joked, assumed and even have posted stories about new Matrix movies being in the works to eventually be revealed that the story was not true… How things have changed.

There is an old saying in Spanish, “Por La Plata Baila El Mono”, which loosely translates to “For the Money, The Monkey Dances.”

Cue the music, the monkey is about to dance.

The Wachowski siblings have a very long history over at Warner Bros. but with the exception of the Matrix Trilogy, none of their movies have had great financial success.

Speed Racer/Cloud Atlas tanked and let’s not kid ourselves, by the looks of it, Jupiter Ascending will not be much better.

We’ve been told that the Wachowski’s have already started the writing process with early treatments and outlines already turned into the studio. No word if they will want to direct but my money says “Claro que Si!”.

Warner Bros. is desperate for a surefire franchise and will be making a push to have the new Matrix films ready to up against any new Star Wars and Avatar films by 2017.

So the big question, will Mr. Anderson be back? Who knows!! One of the early outlines was about the birth of the Matrix and now that WB is Terminator-less, some of suits would like to explore that early world but it’s way too early and the story is still very fluid.

I’ve been also told to that the previous animated Matrix films will not have any effect on the live action movies.

Will keep you updated with all the denials.

The derisive ending of the original Matrix trilogy include the bearded Architect suggesting that Neo wasn’t the first “One,” opening the story world for prequels.
