Post by: Lucinda Bryte on October 22, 2003, 03:45:29 PM
Currently I have Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It?" stuck in my head for no good reason. I haven't heard it forever.  :?

I always have The Trial by Pink Floyd stuck in my head...

The evidence before the court is incontrovertible, there's no need for the jury to retire.

Actually that's really ironic because I had just written a journal entry about a guy (something I rarely do) and I was caught red handed showing feels of an almost human nature.

Er I'm done.

That's nice to see another Tori Amos supporter. I'm not a die-hard fan, but what I've heard, I love so much. She is so much better live than on her cds though, when she played Caught a Lite Sneeze on SNL, I wanted to cry and have sex with her at the same time. She's so gorgeous. Anyhow, CALS and Tear in Your Hand and Siren are really good songs.

"Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" -- Santa Esmeralda (from the Kill Bill soundtrack)
"Lonely Boy" -- Andrew Gold (that's my fault, I'm writing a movie and played it on a loop for a while to get 'in the mood')
"The Night Chicago Died" -- Paper Lace
"Radar Love" -- Golden Earring (though it shifts to Homer doing it sometimes)

I think the main reason it's stuck is either the "Showing feelings, showing feelings of an almost human nature..this will not be tolerated." or the "Craaaaaaaaaaaazy" little choir thing.

I'm still not sick of it, though.

But Sex and Violence by the Exploited is always in my head as well.

Top 3 Songs That Get Stuck In Your Head

1. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"
2. "Baby Back Ribs" jingle from Chili's Restaurant
3. "Who Let the Dogs Out?"

Call it the playlist from hell. But the real No. 1 song that gets stuck in our heads is different for each of us, according to University of Cincinnati marketing professor James Kellaris. He's done so much research on this odd and annoying phenomenon that he has coined a term for it: earworm.

He told The Associated Press that earworm is unexpected and insidious. It might be the first song you hear on the clock radio that wakes you up. It could come from an elevator or the CD playing in the cubicle next to yours. "There are certain tunes that we would describe as catchy that are more likely to become one, but just about anything can become an earworm," he told AP. His personal earworm is Byzantine chants, which he suspects has something to do with his wife's job as a church choir director.

Stuck songs have these traits in common:

- They are relatively simple.
- They are repetitive.
- They contain an element that surprises the listener, such as an interrupted pattern or something that violates expectations of what comes next.
- The most common culprits are songs with lyrics.
- They stay stuck in our heads for a few hours on average.

There is no cure, but these treatments sometimes will work to rid your brain of the repetitive earworm:

- Don't worry about it. (If you take this advice, just don't listen to Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" or you're sure to trade one stuck song for another.)
- Listen to different music.
- Distract yourself with another activity.
- Try singing the entire song--and not just the snippet that's stuck in your head--even if you can't quite remember all the lyrics.
- If that doesn't work, go find the forgotten lyrics. Kellaris theorizes earworm is the brain's attempt to resolve missing information. By finding out the complete lyrics to a song, you might be able to "unstick" it.
- Erase the offending song by singing the theme from "Gilligan's Island." (We have no idea why this would work, but if you're desperate...)
- There's even a folklore cure: Chew on cinnamon sticks.

Fun facts about earworm:

- Women experience more irritation and frustration than men do from earworms.
- People who are constantly exposed to music suffer from it more frequently.
- There may be a connection between earworms and a person's level of neurosis. (Uh oh.)

The research was presented at the Society for Consumer Psychology.

Is it just me or are the Killers the boringest band in a long time? I mean, you see them in interviews and they are a bore. They have nothing interesting to say, they just sit there with the same look on their faces looking pretty with their eyeliner. Like their too cool for anything....cause they wear eyeliner. You know who else wore eyeliner? Motley Crue and Poison and they aernt respected either.

Pussy Cat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes - "Don't Cha".  Absolutely dreadful.

The other dreadful part is the lyric says, "Don't Cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?" and none of the Pussycat Dolls are even remotely lukewarm.
Damn, I missed that one!  You were right on the money Mac.

I hate that song and love it at the same time. Or I just love it, but hate myself for loving it.

last night I downloaded about seven or eight versions of "perfidia" 'cause I was trying to find a version by 3 mustaphas 3.  It's such a fun song and you can go as over-the-top romantic as you want with it and it'll still sound real pretty.  I also realized that the tune "Memories" from Cats had to owe a lot to this song, consciously or subconsiously.
I'm looking for like an opera maestro to sing perfidia, I think that'll be awesome.  so far, 3 mustaphas 3 is the closest I can find, and I can't even find it.

I'm at work and sick right now.  My co-worker saw that I'm eating chicken soup for lunch and he asked, "What are you sick or something?"  I said, "Yeah.  I blame it on last weekend when the temperature was almost up to 70 and now it's back down to the 30s."  He said, "I blame it on the rain" and then he left.

Ever since then, that bastard song has been stuck in my head.

Chart-topper Rihanna rebels with haircut

Chart-topping Barbados singer Rihanna says she is going through a rebellious stage.

But unlike some of her celebrity peers, she has not been arrested for driving while under the influence, checked into rehab or spent time in jail. Instead the 19-year-old cut her hair -- without asking anyone first.

"I just wanted to get a little edgy and cut my hair and I didn't really ask anybody to do it," Rihanna told Reuters in a interview.

"I just did it, changed myself completely, my image and everything. I just did it like a bad girl would do it."

She said the "Good Girl Gone Bad" title of her third album, which was released this week, reflects where she is at in her life and her career and how she feels.

"I just got a little rebellious -- I think it's about time. I just had to breakaway from that innocent girly image that I used to have," she said. "Everybody rebels in their own way and this is my way of being rebellious."

But as Paris Hilton was sent back to jail on Friday and actress Lindsay Lohan recuperates in rehab, a publicist for Rihanna stopped the singer from answering a question on what sort of example she thought they were setting for their fans.

As for her own image, Rihanna, whose single, "Umbrella" is currently No. 1 in both the United States and Britain, said, "I'm setting a great example for young girls, I just want to lead them in the right direction."

"Right now I am a very fun-loving person. I am very focused and ambitious. When I want something I get dedicated and I work towards it. I have a big work ethic," she said.

She admitted that she was still not used to all the attention that came with being a chart-topping singer.

"It's definitely awkward, sometimes all the attention, it can be weird," she said. "But I guess it's a great thing considering the new album 'Good Girl Gone Bad' just came out. I think it's great I am getting all the attention."

i keep whistling the Godfather theme.
oh my god. this has happened to me so many times. that's one of the most whistlable themes ever.

other things i've whistled for days on end..

- Piano Trio in E-Flat (schubert) from Barry Lyndon. a tough one to whistle, but rewarding.
- Jazz Suite, Waltz 2, from EWS. this melody is practically always in my head. i don't mind.
- other movie themes: Fistful of Dollars, Requiem for a Dream..
- Summertime. works at any speed.
- various tv show themes.. the simpsons, X-Files.

the most recent non-whistlable song i've had stuck in my head, nonstop for a while now: Sunny by Bobby Hebb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KjZaXn18kKY). beautiful song.

i keep whistling the Godfather theme.

really? cause yesterday around 11:30pm (Central) for no apparent reason i started whistling the godfather theme over and over. customers started whistling it as well and the whole store eventually turned into this cacophonous barrage of that little tune. seriously, WTF?

 I have had that so many times, but instead of whistling I'm humming.

Also from BL the one I do whistle to no end is Women of Ireland but instead of thinking about the movie I see young Stanley playing and laughing.

I got the new Breeders album...

It's real good. But every time I get done listening to it, I can't stop humming Cannonball.

I never really even liked Cannonball too much.

The other day, I had some headphones on and I was listening to, "lost dogs and mixed blessings," from John Prine and this song came on.  Now, this record is what happens when folk songs get over produced and it actually gets done right.  Or at least what happens to songs with folk sentiments, now long story short; this song jerked some serious tears from my face .  This hasn't happened for a long time.

Hopefully someone out there finds the same thing in there as me.

RIP pops.

Comedy Bang Bang is it a hit or miss show for me because the characters are so outlandish that you'll either find them hilarious or tedious depending on if you get the joke. Jon Daly is my favorite, and most popular for his character "Bill Cosby-Bukowski" who's writes what he calls "Jelloems". Anyways, Jon and Zach Galifianakis have put together a fan club called "The Peppermen" specializing in any and everything Red Hot Chili Peppers. I think what I find funniest about the bit is their dedication to playing it straight as themselves when talking about this. Jon took it a step further and made this amazing tribute song. Everything about it structurally is exactly a Chili Peppers song but the lyrics seem to kind of make fun of their whole career as musicians. I love that. Do yourself a favor and stick around until 1:48. Bing a bong, a bong, a bonga. Enjoy.

This is a cover of one of the worst songs I've ever heard (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVdnvQsKyUs), performed by the band that does the catchy but kind of obnoxious "Cool Kids", a band that consists of a group of teenaged siblings, and I've probably listened to it twenty times over the past two days. I can not get enough of this stupid song.

That 'Fancy' song was TORTURE over the summer. Just the chorus, none of Iggy's parts. I can't stand her.

Yesterday this was stuck in my head from the moment I woke up to when I got out of work. I couldn't stop singing it. I like Beardo's voice and nerdiness and how he looks like he totally doesn't belong in rap, but goddamn it he's trying. You guys will probably hate it just based on the chorus and the quality of this video. Maybe you'll find something funny in it, doesn't really matter. The point is: it was stuck in my head.

hozier is a bit like a pop version of bon iver

justin vernon, while feeling emotional with a breakup from a girlfriend, went into the woods and recorded for emma, forever ago, which became massively popular

andrew hozier-byrne, while feeling emotions from a breakup with his boyfriend, went into his parents' attic and recorded take me to church, which became massively popular

i believe these are good examples of music, and i think part of why they work is they're examples of emotional music, and it's like ok you can be born to play the piano, but also you can be born to be emotional

this is my favorite quote from the wiki page where i learned my hozier facts:
“I found the experience of falling in love or being in love was a death, a death of everything. You kind of watch yourself die in a wonderful way, and you experience for the briefest moment – if you see yourself for a moment through their eyes – everything you believed about yourself gone. In a death-and-rebirth sense.”

this is the music video to the song that made the song a big deal, and big fucking deal with triple-digit-millions of people and everything, this is today's pop music, highly likely you've heard this song, i've heard this song enough number of times that i should be over it, but i'm not, and even when i get over the song i'll find myself returning to it and feeling emotional again because duh

I was introduced to this through the "Lost Highway" soundtrack that I own, which is a movie I've only seen once for reasons unbeknownst to me. It has a very strong Halloween vibe and of course my favorite part is how it goes "OOOooooooooooHHHHHhhhhhhh….."  I know that some of you are hardcore Manson fans here (03) does he have other songs like this?

There has yet to be a really great cover. Huge opportunity.

Good book, too.
