Title: Do you lurk at XIXAX.com?
Post by: Tictacbk on August 06, 2010, 04:23:54 AM
Perhaps I shouldn't be calling attention to this, but I've been thinking about starting this thread for a while now.

I've been coming to this site practically every day for 7 years now.  It's crazy to think about, but true.  I find myself saying things like "No, its true, I saw it on xixax" to my friends in the 'real world.'  I get most of my news, and develop plenty of my opinions while reading xixax.  And yet, I'm not what you would call a "regular" here.  I've posted 300-something times in 7 years.  I don't know if its because i'm intimidated or what...actually I definitely wouldn't chalk most of it it up to intimidation, maybe mostly laziness.  But nonetheless I love this website.

Recently I've started to look at the "users online" section of the stats down at the bottom.  I'd see users online I wasn't used to seeing around here, but then notice they've been registered here for at least 5 years.  It got me wondering how many of us "lurkers" were out there.  I'm calling you out, goddamit.  Have you been coming here for years? Do you feel guilty for not contributing much to such a fantastic website?

Its a strange feeling because I feel like I'm part of a community, but not really.  I can read reviews and articles written by posters here and feel like, to a certain degree, I know the writer's opinion quite well.

I guess I'm starting this topic for a couple reasons.  One is that I want to call out the other lurkers.  The other is that I feel guilty for how long I've been here without contributing as much as others.   I'd like to start contributing, and formally thank the "regulars" who do so.  This really is the finest forum I visit on the internet.

I've always wondered this as well. How many people read this site. I bet there are tons even though it's a small base that posts.

I don't really count in the traditional sense, but I'm more of a lurker these days.  Don't get to see too many quality movies 'cause what art houses are around are so far away now, and I try to devote my free time to creating.  Cinephile and Neon Mercury are two other regulars that come to mind that seem to be just lurkers now, if that.

But: it would be nice to see some lurkers come outta the woodwork.  I wish this place wasn't as much of a sausage fest, too, but you can't have it all.  We seemed to have scared away most of the women who tolerate the testosterony goodness.  Or maybe it (still) is just the nature of the medium.  Who's the next Penelope Spheeris/Nicole Holofcenter/Julie Taymor/Sofia Coppola/Maya Deren/etc.?  It'd be nice to know she graced this place once, 'cause, well, I've seen a lot of film forums, but none has the heart this place does (which I largely attribute to its roots in PTA, but I digress).

I lurk more than I post, though definitely not a full-on lurker, but half the time I will go to write something and then just delete because I reconsider what it will actually bring to the thread in terms of critical value.

I try to resist posting here because when I contribute to message boards it's either for humor's sake or it comes off as rambling.  I never take too seriously what I put on them because it's just discussion, but then I see some people here putting out really well constructed posts and it encourages me to be a better man.

Maybe I should just write an essay on a film and then post it, not type it into this box here.  Somehow, typing into a form here always makes me weary of the page locking up or somehow accidentally closing the page or deleting my text and then being too pissed to retype it.

a friend of mine posted like three times back near the beginning and then seemingly vanished but has been reading ever since. i ask him why he doesn't join the discussions and he says we can't handle sarcasm and it will always turn into some kind of serious discussion on what that little bit of sarcasm really means.

If I remember correctly there was already a thread all about this.

I pronounce it z-eye-zacks.  ("eye" like the letter "I") -- Though I've also spelled it out, but that takes too long.

I pronounce it ix-ax, but I remember saying it someone who knew the board and they gave me a weird face so I could be wrong.

haha... this conversation comes up once every couple of years.

the pronunciation in mind when the site was named was "sex acts", but most people I talk to pronounce it "Zye-Zacks" like Ticktackbackwhackgiveadogabone said.

I read more than I post.

Side note.  This site should really have a t-shirt.  Provocative design, and enough of us jokers wear it, we might get some more of the right element here.  With an allusion to "sex acts," of course, and the ubiquitous film reel present.  Something like.  "you say it sex acts."  Or maybe am amalgamation of all these different pronunciations with "sex acts" being the punch line.  "a film site like no other."  M'eh.  Just shooting from the hip here.  "Come for the film, stay for the circle jerks."  Any one of our marquees could make a t-shirt slogan.  If I go through the marquees now I lose the post, so *click*.

EDIT: Added bonus of whatever revenue generated going to the site's server costs.

The t-shirts must still be being designed: http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=3670.0

Okay, a quick diversion in the form of a relevant past blast:

Ono pronounces it the way I pronounce it, so that must mean he's right.

Yeah, I've been coming here pretty well since it started, was on the old PT Anderson website before. Check it out probably 4-5 times per week, post in streaks, not as interested in posting as I used to be. I'm in my early thirties, and I feel old coming here sometimes. I feel like a lurker because I don't have 5,000+ posts.

Is Duck Sauce still around? Didn't he used to have a Count Chocula avatar? Or was that the old board?

No, yes, and both.

i'm a total lurker. when i do post something, it never seems to go well.

and i'm with gold trumpet on the pronunciation. i've always called it "ix-axe"... i know it's wrong, but it just feels so right.

Please note that hardcore lurkers, people who have been reading the site and stealing our opinions for years but never registered, won't see this post cos idle chatter is hidden unless you're logged in.

I come here since it started and I was also a poster on the old PTA forum, but over the years I've been posting less and less. Maybe it has something to do with english not being my native language that makes it feel easier to read than to write. But I login to ix-axe almost every day, even though I prefer sex-acts, because, well, I feel like I know a little bit about a lot of you, without really knowing much, and that's interesting. It's like "well, let's see what so and so has to say about this movie" or whatever.

That's how I've always pronounced it too. If it's wrong, I'm not going to change my ways now.

We're not exactly gentle to any new members trying to integrate themselves into the board.

i've known xixax (which i pronounce like nina hagen) since 2006 or so but only registered a year ago, and as you can tell by my post count, i definitely do more lurking than i do writing, even though i check in every day. i'll join elpandaroyal on the english not being my native language thing, which does often bring about laziness when it comes to forming an intelligible opinion on a film or whatever. but i still like to think i'm a part of the community, albeit a very discret, quiet one.

Yeah when I started posting here a few years after I'd been lurking the board it was just nonsensical blithering crap and I actually look back on it and can see how self centered I was at the time. I understand the elder users keeping a firm hand over what the norm is for the site because theres a lot of potential for us to fall into bullshit gray areas that don't mean anything and we should expect eachother to be smarter than that.

I relate to what panda said. Also, in my case, I stopped posting and visiting abruptly about 4 years ago, and I dind't even lurk for a long time. But I've been coming here in the last few weeks and it's one of my favorite places on the internet again. But when I was in highschool this place was a big part of my life. I used to tell my friends and my brother about stuff that was written here... I came here every single day.
I've been trying to think about why I don't post here often, and I can't even make up my mind about it. I think most of the times I really feel like I have nothing to add to a conversation. I really learned a lot about films in this place, and I met panda in real life and we have been keeping in touch from time to time.
I'd like to become a more active member in the future but there's a lot going on in my life right now and I just can't dedicate so much time to this place as I did a few years a go.
I pronouce it zigzacks.
