I do not care for Jack White and his music.

I was looking to update my film list excel file, and the imdb board for PTA sucks. Did a search on the internet and found whatever that website is called.

I'm too lazy to list my favorite films, so I'll just list directors:

Kubrick
---
Bergman
Kurosawa
Fellini
---
Iñárritu
Aronofsky
PTA
Wes Anderson

• I like to say that Hitchcock is overrated, but I always find myself glued to the TV when one of his films comes on TCM.
• Oliver Stone broke my fucking heart when I saw Alexander.
• I'll see anything with Gael Garcia Bernal or a Gyllenhaal.
• DP: Conrad L. Hall, Rodrigo Prieto, & Roger Deakins

I do have many pics, but I don't feel like whoring myself out - yet.

Obviously what you are doing right now is called (in my upcoming book of psychology at least) validation. I think it's a normal thing to do. People will reply, say anything, and then you're gonna do what you were subconsciently thinking of doing all along.

Well, I'm a long-time lurker that just signed in and defended a film that I didn't think was necessarily great, but just sorely underappreciated.

How ironic.

I really love Dave Kehr and Stanley Kauffmann - I feel like they provide analysis that is more insightful than most critics nowadays. Jonathan Rosenbaum is a wonderful writer as well.

I also love reading David Bordwell -  his texts don't feel didactic ... they just feel alive. And I am a big fan of David Thomson's prose. I don't necessarily agree with him all the time, but his encyclopedic knowledge, as well as passion, always manages to be disarming.

Taking a film theory class right now. I'm quite excited - we'll be reading some Bazin and Einstein. I've only had a cliff-notes version of both - so I can't wait. Some Walter Benjamin will also be incorporated next week... so yeah, it should be a blast.

Um, I think film criticism seems like dead or close to it, at this point. It's something that is seen by most as something we should consume, and should not analyze whatsoever.

I love Wong Kar-Wai... I feel as if there is no filmmaker out there other than him right now that can depict Benjamin/Boudelaire-ish concepts about time and space better. I'm getting acquainted with Jean-Luc Godard and I think the way he infuses politics and cinema is nothing short of brilliant - it is a breath of fresh air from today's political film, which is so in love with liberal guilt and not enough with life.

I am sick of Oscars, yet I have been following it for years. Go figure.

I used to be a big Ang Lee fan... but then I saw Brokeback Mountain :( Hulk wasn't encouraging either. I think Crash and Good Luck and Good Night were one of the worst films of last year - masturbatory, liberal guilt material. Especially Crash - what a pos!

I hate Michael Moore and Oliver Stone with a passion- they stand for everything that I would like cinema not to be.

And I defend Cameron's Titanic with every chance that I get... which I guess strike some people as weird.

Um, that's it, I guess.

Gamblour.

Einstein

I think you mean Eisenstein. But welcome aboard, you seem pretty intellectual, which is always nice. I think it's nice to read academic discussions of film, but I don't like to engage in them, it pains me to analyze something like film. Reading analysis is alright though. Go and talk about why you don't like Brokeback, I'm curious why. And hating Good Night, and Good Luck? You got some splaining to do.
WWPTAD?

You hate Crash, but you like Titanic.  The hating Crash thing counts more, so you're welcome to stay.

I also welcome this new member. He seems spirited enough to really offer debate. And considering his opinions, I'm sure we'll be in the thick of one soon enough.

1. it's called "Good Night, and Good Luck."
2. "Crash" and "Good Night, and Good Luck." are two separate films

and yeah, if you plan to post in the "Good Night, and Good Luck." thread, maybe explain why the hell you label that story "liberal guilt material" and why a left-wing perspective in a film prevents you from appreciating it despite your fascination with the fusion of politics and cinema.

but ya don't hafta if ya don't wanna

oh no, intellectualizing wong karwai films--hope you're not one of those people.

sounds good, smart even, which is always welcome. except he seems to be always on the defensive. he came here to defend a movie, he makes a point of defending titanic every chance he gets, i hope he's capable of initiating some original thought or discussion outside the context of a "defense". we all saw how long it took Losing The Horse to lose that habit.

and that concludes our post-intro wrap up.

I used to be a noob once.  I weighed 500 pounds.  I was getting really high every day.  I was even doing my dishes in the bathtub.

But I've recently joined the ranks of Manute Boll, The Titte Brothers and Andre Giant.

Hello.

:waves to everyone:

I'm really liberal. I would consider myself a socialist :) GNAGL's script was a poor excuse of a rhetoric. I learned more about McCarthyism in seventh grade.

Oh, and sorry, for the typo on Eisenstein

Split Infinitive

Good morning.  As with just about everybody else who posted in this thread, I'm here to introduce myself.  My favorite directors are Woody Allen and Billy Wilder (can you tell I'm a writer?), though I also dearly love Fellini, Richard Linklater, and (for my not-so-guilty pleasure) Guillermo Del Toro.  My favorite film is Casablanca. My tastes tend toward the mainstream, but I thoroughly enjoy art house cinema as well.  I can't think of a single thing to say that would be particularly impressive or secure my status as an "up and comer to watch," but intend to stick around for a while.
Please don't correct me. It makes me sick.
