many of you most likely share my opnion that chirs cunningham is one ofthe most brilliant music video directors working. i hear that he is about to shoot his first feature, based on a "well known" sci fi novel. does any one know more about this? i cant wait to see a feature from this guy. supposedly he was contacted by kubrick after he saw the "all is full of love" video -- he wanted cunningham to do CGI work for AI.

'All Is Full Of Love' is, like all of Bjork's videos, almost heartbreaking in its beauty.

Chris Cunningham is visual genius, and a lucky bastard too -- he was FX supervisor for Fincher on Alien 3 when he was 19 years old!

Check out this swell article, from which I got that bit of info:

From what i've heard - the "well known" sci-fic novel Cunningham is turning into a film is called NECROMANCER by William Gibson.  I also heard APHEX TWIN is doing the soundtrack!

Funny that my name is also Christopher Cunningham. I get emails here and there asking me if I really am him. I don't think most people in the business think it's my real name. Ahh well, maybe I'll have to come up with a pseudonym! There can't possibly be TWO Chris Cunningham directors, can there!!!!?

HAHA! That's too funny. I swear someone else has said that to me before. When those people email me and ask me if I'm THE Chris Cunningham, the only thing I can say is I'm a Chris Cunningham yes, so does that answer your questions? It's my routine now.

Reported on Sunday, Variety is confirming the rumors about video director CHRIS CUNNINGHAM’s film project ‘RANX’.

The British born director, who won acclaim for his BJORK, MADONNA and APHEX TWINS videos, has been awarded $164,200 dollars from the U.K. Film Council. The money is to be used for developing ‘Ranx,’ a sci-fi relationship drama inspired by the cult French comicbook series of the same name (originally published as "RanXerox" but forced to change its title after a lawsuit from the photocopier firm).

Though the screenplay is at an early stage, Variety reports the story will center a boy, a girl and her big robot. American scribe GORDY HOFFMAN, who wrote "Love Liza," starring his brother Phillip Seymour Hoffman, will be sharing the screenplay duties with Cunningham. The comic based project will feature visionary and experimental style, but due to its major innovative special effects, the film will not be expected to be release any time soon.

Cunningham was rumored to be attached to the film adaptation for William Gibson's cyberpunk novel ‘Neuromancer’, but all reports indicate that film project is most likely dead.

Fans should also be on the lookout for a couple of new DVD projects from Cunningham.

ONE: A DVD concept album - made up of eight short films with a strong musical element, some of it composed by Cunningham.

TWO: ‘RUBBER JOHNNY’ (photo below) - about a kid with a mean dog, shot in the style of an underground comic, will be released as a "DVD single" and has been sold to the Sundance Channel in the U.S. Cunningham is planning to expand that segment into a 10-part TV series

Quote from: StefenIs that money the whole budget or just for preproduction?
it's from the council's Development Fund.. "The aim [of said fund] is to raise the quality of screenplays produced in or from the UK through targeted development initiatives.  Over time, the fund aims to build creatively focused relationships, with a breadth of talent, from 'first timers' to experienced practitioners."

so i guess it's just to get the script right.

giger was the guy taht did the concept art for alien, poltregeist II (tequila worm concept art/production), dune, and species.

Well, Rubber Johnny is finally coming out.  From director-file.com.

Warp Films will release Chris' new short film Rubber Johnny on DVD Monday, May 16, 2005. It will be released in both NTSC and PAL formats, available through WarpMart.
Though they didn't confirm it in their current press release, a previous report said it will be available on the same day for download on Bleep.
The DVD will have special edition packaging, including a full colour sketchbook with 40 pages of original Cunningham drawings and photographic artwork.
Rubber Johnny, Warp reveals, is a 6-minute 10-second short film, featuring "afx237 v.7" by Aphex Twin, which can be found on his album Drukqs. It was shot on DV in infrared. The short film, according to warpfilms.com, "documents a 16-year-old, inbred mutant's solitary existence, locked in a pitch-black basement by his ashamed parents. They are TV addict rednecks who occasionally feed Johnny and yell at him for making noise. Johnny's only company in the basement is his little dog. His dog's I.Q. far outstrips Johnny's, who is a completely insane, bi-polar imbecile."
The trailer for Rubber Johnny is on Chris's Directors Label DVD.
According to Variety, Rubber Johnny has been sold to the Sundance Channel in the U.S.  Chris apparently also wishes to expand it into its own 10-part TV series.

yeah cos ur not making sense.

"how much talent he has" is not determined by the length of his work. u can tell instantly how much potential genius there is in any artist from their best stuff in whatever medium. anyone who saw the Bachelorette video wouldn't deny that gondry is a relentlessly stimulating artist.

so in much the same way anyone who saw windowlicker or come to daddy cannot deny that they display an intense, profound creative force not found in 99% of feature films. he proved his ownership of the music video and that's enuff justification for that format.

what ur saying is he has to make a great feature film in order to prove he is the best video director, and that makes no sense whatsoever.

this article tells a little about Rubber Johnny and implies Ranx (Ran Xerox) may not be happening after all:

Time Out London .. 15-22.06.2005 ..

Warped Mind by Ben Walters
80 Spasming mutants, inside-out heads, deformed physiognomies that couldn't, and certainly shouldn't, exist - just another day at the orifice for Chris Cunningham. Best known for his videos for Portishead, Madonna, Björk and, most notoriously, Aphex Twin (a demonic version of whose face was plastered on to council estate kids in 'Come to Daddy' and bootylicious babes in 'Windowlicker'). Cunningham has now made 'Rubber Johnny', a six-minute film released by Warp on DVD.
Set in a dank basement-like room and shot in grainy-green night vision, it's an all-out audiovisual assault in which a shape-shifting mutant child in a wheelchair throws the mother of all fits. Like much of Cunningham's work, its power comes from the clash between the mundane and the monstrous, between a setting coded as 'authentic' (in this case the CCTV-style footage of a concrete room) and grotesque subject matter that often revolves around the collapsing body (here a kid with an outsized head and the apparent ability to expose its contents).
The disturbingly real feel is partly a result of Cunningham's reliance on plastic prosthetics rather than digital effects. 'To me, cinema is about photographing reality,' he insists, affable and engaged behind his shades. 'I don't think computer graphics look real enough yet - they sacrifice the psychological effect of something looking genuine.' Accordingly, 'Rubber Johnny' is 'pretty lo-fi. It's just me and a couple of friends with foam rubber, Sellotape, fake hair and an old wheelchair. All the pictures in the book were taken on my bathroom floor.'
'Rubber Johnny' also marks another - and perhaps final - collaboration with Aphex Twin's Richard James, featuring a mix of his music and Cunningham's own. 'I think I've taken that as far as I want to,' the director says. 'I've got to the point now where I'd quite like to do the music to my own film.'
A move into features is his next step, though he's been saying that for a while: planned adaptations of William Gibson's 'Neuromancer', Italian punk comic 'RanXerox' and Philip K Dick's 'A Scanner Darkly' (now filmed by Richard Linklater) came to nothing after Cunningham's enthusiasm waned despite substantial preparatory work. 'It's just embarrassing,' he admits. 'All I ever do is talk about films and then not make them. As a result I thought: just shut up about it - make a film then talk about it when it's done. But it's got to be something that I'm absolutely frothing about. After three or four years tinkering with other people's material I came to the conclusion that I just had to develop my own material from scratch.'
'Rubber Johnny' itself took far longer to realise than anticipated - four years of snatched weekends. It was initially conceived as one of ten Cunningham shorts to be issued collectively as a 'DVD album'; the production time prompted the decision to release 'Johnny' into the community on his own for the time being, packaged in a 42-page illustrated hardback sleeve ('more of a book with a bonus DVD, really').
Even this release was delayed when the Italian printers balked at the grotesque photographs, like the one on this page of deformed bodyshapes composed of limbs, arseholes, bollocks, and the occasional gaping gob. Unlike the film's fast, grainy images, these are flatly, brightly lit with an objective feel, like something out of a medical textbook: 'In my mind they were photos of [the character] as a baby,' Cunningham explains, 'being photographed in hospital and changing shape each time they took a photograph.' Hardly every mother's dream. There are also dozens of sketches that hark back to the character's origins as a doodle in the margins of Cunningham's schoolbooks.
It adds up to an impressive and unusual package - one that's typical of Warp Films' ambitious new reach. Founded in 1989, Warp Records nurtured the likes of Aphex Twin, LFO and Autechre (for whom Cunningham made his first video ten years ago); the label moved into film with Chris Morris's BAFTA-winning 2002 short 'My Wrongs #8245-8249 & 117', which sold well on disc, and last year produced its first feature, Shane Meadows' 'Dead Man's Shoes'. DVD distribution remains key to Warp's approach. It hopes to develop a loyal record label or film club-type audience for a varied diet of material. A week after 'Rubber Johnny', the disturbing 'Paradise Lost' documentaries are released; future titles could range from music-based content to vintage television.
Warp's Mark Herbert says the company has taken its cue from its track record in music. 'The director's vision is so important. Our thing is developing a body of work with people rather than one-hit-wonders, and finding an audience for it. With our own distribution, films don't have to be on 300 prints across the country.'
Feature production also continues: Meadows' skinhead memoir 'Oi! This Is England' is due to shoot in September and talks are underway with Lynne Ramsay, for whose 'Morvern Callar' Warp produced the soundtrack. Other projects include 'Harvest', a story by Frank Cottrell Boyce about allotments and asylum-seekers and eventually, perhaps, a Chris Cunningham feature. At any rate, he has no plans to return to promo work.
'Music videos are fundamentally wrong anyway,' he asserts. 'They're just wrong. Someone's individual interpretation of a song shouldn't be denied them by seeing some video. All of the tracks I loved as a kid, if I saw the videos, I'd be pissed off 'cos it would be like, "Now I've got that fucking thing in my head".'
Not that anyone would think such a thing after seeing any of Cunningham's work...

Good article, I think once Kubrick said something similar, Nicholson quoted him in the a life doc.

Yep, that's the best instead of endlessly teasing us.

The more I read about him the more I'm convinced he's a genius, what first impressed me (aside the fact he work with SK at very young age) is the way he express his ideas, then I saw some of his videos; he better start working on something like right now.

From what I understand - the version of FLEX offered on the Director's Label DVD is only 3 minutes of a 17 min film.

Does anyone know if a longer version of FLEX exists and if so, if it available in it's entire length.

I know at one point it was an istallation peice in the royal academy's 'Appocalypse' exhibition...it would be unfortunate if the entire version is not avail for viewing.

I after viewing this, I really really hoped that this wasn't the film in it's full length(of course deep down i knew it was).

I was very underwhelmed by this.

His technical aptitude is definately on display, however the content was boring and uninspired.

I do agree with stefen evaluation of the cheese - mostly the wheelchair breakdancing sequences didn't sit well with me.

dissapointed.

I don't know. I mean I was just clamoring for new Cunningham and he hasent done anything in so long. Maybe my dissapointment was a direct result of the hype I created for myself. I see this video being mentioned on other non movie boards and people seem to be impressed so maybe if I wasn't familiar with Cunningham my attitude would be different. It just lacked that punch, that awe. It was filmed over 2 years ago though, I actually don't even think he works with film anymore. I heard he just focuses on rocking the wheelz of steel. It's unfortuante, cause he's a creative and visual genius.

I was disappointed, too. The trailer had such promise...so weird and creepy. That whole sequence of the film was great, but then it just goes crazy and ceases to be unsettling and gets old really fast.

i didn't wanna say anything too soon like my revenge of the sith review.

ok so it wasn't what i expected, that's my fault. once it stoppped being creepy, (after the menu, trailer, and site), or at least when i stopped thinking of it as creepy, it was still a brilliant music video. NOT worth the money, or hype, but it definitely worked. btw that ebaumsworld link is the worst way to watch it, half the frames are missing from the morph shots and u can't see shit in the darker shots.

in a dark room with the volume UP is the optimum viewing environment as crono said, but now having seen it so much it's starting to be FUNNY. which according to chris cunningham were his intentions anyway. in the same way that Windowlicker is quite funny and the dude screaming at the old lady in Come to Daddy is absurd genius.

if this really was a 10 part tv "series", rubber johnny would emerge as a sympathetic hero for the e-tarded generation.  his head is so huge and his eyes so bright and his mouth so expressive (LOVE those clicks), he is too harmless.. almost cute. this is what some of u called "cheezy". to think the music came before the film is mind boggling. he's got sumthing here, which over time will become more apparent as he works with new material (and yes i think he will, nay, must make a feature one day).

cunningham's flaw, if he has one, is that he isn't copying anyone. this kind of originality is sumtimes hard to take. like, wtf is going on? i dont' think he even bothers with that question himself. and if there is an answer it will be revealed as his work progresses. i think this quote is very insightful about his ideas:
Quote from: the cunningmanThe primary objective with this video and the collaboration with Squarepusher, was to try and push the synchronisation aspects of my work to the limit, before I did a feature. When I look at older videos, like Come on My Selector or Come to Daddy they look slow to me, even though they seemed fast at the time.
...
The bass line in [Afx. 237 v.7] sounded like an elastic band to me and so I got the idea of someone shapeshifting like a piece of chewing gum, whilst raving.
i hav yet to watch it one frame at a time, if only to appreciate how effortless he makes it look. yes, it is flawless on a technical level, and flawed as a narrative, yet so goddamn original, lucid, and "fast".. it's good before we even know why.

when i saw david cross a few weeks ago he told a story about how one of the funniest things he has EVER seen was being outside of a hotel pool with Bjork and Chris Cunningham and a bunch of people.  then, this lady from the hotel comes out to say that nobody can be in the pool all nicely and cunningham charged her and pushed her into the pool from behind and there was a second of silence and then the entire place erupted with laughter.

We realize this is disappointing and want to reassure you that we remove movies from our web site only in unusual circumstances.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you find many other movies to enjoy at Netflix.

It's not even $12 through Amazon.  I couldn't find it at my local tower though.

I'll agree that it might not live up to his other works, I'll still say that it's rather genius.  I've had just as much fun getting friends to check this out as I did with Widowlicker, and to a sicker extent tubgirl.

I'm not sure how well editing to a song to that extent would work in a feature, but I sure hope he tries.   :-D

i don't think he ever intended to try it on a feature, that would be stupid. in fact, from what he's said, he wanted to get over the synchronization experiments so he wouldn't hav to try them in a feature.

So, I bought Rubber Johnny and the film on the DVD is different than the one floating around the net (and the one posted here) the DVD is longer and alot better, the one on the net is all the cheesy stuff like the handicap breakdancing. It still doesn't have any narrative but it's alot better than I originally thought. That little dog is adorable, reminds me of Fulty.

It came packaged like a childrens book. But I guess if you look at it from a certain way it really is a childrens film for adults. I really wish it had more on it though, maybe the light aircraft on fire video cause that wasn't on the directors label dvd. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.

I can never see him doing a feature film. As a matter of fact I think his work with film will be rare from here on out. And that's a bummer.

Quote from: PitchforkPitchfork: I was always surprised you never did a Radiohead video, it seems like your style would work with their music really well.

Cunningham: I'm just not a fan. I recently bought OK Computer-- I'd never heard it-- and I thought it was amazing. There was one song on there that I thought, "Fuck, I would have loved to have made a video for that song."

Pitchfork: Which one?

Cunningham: "Subterranean Homesick Alien". At that time I was so into Aphex and Squarepusher and Boards of Canada-- my head was in a completely different place.

Pitchfork: That's ironic because after OK Computer they tried to incorporate some Aphex-type elements into their music. Have you heard Kid A?

Cunningham: No, I've heard odd tracks. I've heard enough to know it's not my cup of tea at all. I think they're fucking incredible, just not my taste. .

it took me a couple days to get over it.

seriously tho, that's gotta be one of the best interviews he's given. it's great how open he is about his process and honest he is about what he can and can't do. along with the radiohead revelation, he said he was not a "kubrick obsessive" but explains it well enough:
Quote from: CCI've been offered some pretty big stuff but if I'd been offered that I would have had a conflict because, on one hand I'm struggling to establish my own identity and I'm a new filmmaker and I've just made a few videos-- I was just finding out what I was about starting to understand my subconscious. I feel like each time I do something I want it to be more and more recognizable that it's me so, by the time I do a film, my films will be as recognizable as someone like David Lynch or someone who's got their own thing going on.

he's got his head in the right place, these observations and comments were also a highlight:

QuotePitchfork: Yeah, with Michel, his ideas seem so simple, they always have this great childlike quality...

Cunningham: I totally agree. When I saw his video out of a window of a train [for the Chemical Brothers' "Star Guitar"], I thought, "Why the fuck didn't I think of that" because most of my ideas come while looking out the window of a train. It's brilliant.

QuotePitchfork: Are you just having a lot of trouble adjusting from short videos to a feature-length film?

Cunningham: I think I'm smart enough to know that when I was doing videos I understood instinctively that you have work with bolder strokes and make an impression in five minutes and be more extreme. It's almost like being a comic book artist: You're not using reality as your medium, it's more like a fanstasy. Whereas with features you have to sit down and adapt your skills. Editing pictures to sound is one skill but that's of no use in film because I'm working with story and performances. I have to now apply my technical abilities to a completely different set of parameters. That's one of the reasons why I haven't made a film: I haven't yet found a story that checks all the boxes in all the things I'm interested in and is a strong enough to hold and hour and a half. It would be really easy to make a bullshit abstract film or something that's really visual. I do really love stories.
he's more like kubrick than he cares to admit.

QuotePitchfork: So it's basically going to be a album with a video to every song?

Cunningham: Maybe, or maybe an EP with videos. I'm not sure yet because I'm still working on it. It's a total left turn, it's something that's more exciting to me than making a feature film because that's so predictable. It's just about wanting to try things you haven't done before-- you don't know if it's going to work.
this dude is on "some Other shit".

The Horrors recently updated their myspace blog (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=28123580&blogID=141737428&MyToken=a2655480-d011-45a3-ab0e-f28e1c716bc1) with a link to the new video for Sheena Is A Parasite, directed by Cunningham and starring Samantha Morton.

here's a behind the scenes cap
(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2Fsheenacap1.jpg&hash=719643e8085a512168b7aca62f05379411c9cada)

as usual, the video does contain some disturbing imagery. this time more in the rubber johnny vein of exploding heads and flying entrails. here is a preview of such an image, clicky (http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/pubrick/vidcaps/sheenacap2.jpg). the video can be accessed through their blog in the link above but don't be scared off by the registration form you hav to fill in before getting to the video. just type any old crap on those things, like first name : fafafaf and email address 'afafaf@afafaf.com" and u'll get to the streaming page.

IF THATS ALL TOO MUCH TROUBLE, copy and paste this url into your windows media player to watch the streaming clip:
http://exodus.interoutemediaservices.com/?id=aa81817d-41e3-480a-8d7f-bb83e4463add&delivery=stream&tk=Hx%2BotJVwyAg=vIETfe%2BfH%2FftFfpbzWsgCWfhuqk=3O1d2A==17 (http://exodus.interoutemediaservices.com/?id=aa81817d-41e3-480a-8d7f-bb83e4463add&delivery=stream&tk=Hx%2BotJVwyAg=vIETfe%2BfH%2FftFfpbzWsgCWfhuqk=3O1d2A==17)

pretty much the same info plus a bit more can be found on their blog and at the cunningham site (http://www.director-file.com/cunningham/horrors.html).

my thoughts on the video: samantha fucking morton rocks her ass off. these are two minutes of certified mayhem. nothing new by way of cunningham innovation except working with a "name" actress, i don't know whose idea it was but morton has redeemed herself for her forgettable appearance in that U2 video (Electrical Storm directed by Anton Corbijn), tho it's cool that she even appears in these things. the video is almost stolen by the creepy bass player, and the rest of the band's energy certainly comes through also.

the reason i mention them is because this presents something slightly different to other cunningham videos, or at least the way he had evolved to making them. possibly because it is a performance video, and the nature of the material (hard and fast), the energy of the talent onscreen comes across much more naturally than in any of his previous visual masterpieces. tell me you are not affected by morton's hips just past the minute mark. shakira wishes she had cunningham to exploit her assets so effectively. he continues to marry image and sound like no other artist working today, and in this he captures the kinetic presence of his "subjects" in a way that propels and punctuates our own experience of the material, similar to his other works in the visual manipulation but with a new additional layer --- a different angle on the distortion of human form.

in perfecting the unification of the superficial aspects of sound and image, through his aphex experiments, he is moving towards a more significant unison.. that of a palpable human energy as displayed by his subjects on screen; his own vision; and our own perception. there is one way to see his work --- it becomes purely our way. this isn't his best video, but it shows that he has not lost any ground in pursuing what i perceive to be extremely high ambitions. ultimately he'd say all these words are a bunch of bullshit anyway. like kubrick would if he ever saw what i wrote.. and was alive.

Video: Gil Scott-Heron: "New York Is Killing Me" [Directed by Chris Cunningham]
Source: Pitchfork

Chris Cunningham is the visionary director behind our favorite music video of the 1990s, Aphex Twin's wonderfully absurd "Come to Daddy" (among many other classic clips), but he's been dormant as of late. Luckily, that looks to be changing.

The director debuted his first new video in four years-- for Gil Scott-Heron's "New York Is Killing Me"-- at the Museum of Modern Art last night. Cunningham also remixed the audio into something considerably more ominous, which perfectly synchronizes with the shadowy, New York-at-night clip. Even more good news: MoMA's site says Cunningham is "presently working on his first audiovisual album."

Watch the "New York Is Killing Me" video below:

Watch: Teaser Trailer For Chris Cunningham's Documentary On LA Rockers Warpaint

Today marks the return of LA rockers Warpaint with their sophomore self-titled album, a ten-song blend of slinky, bass-driven jams, and it's certainly been long-awaited—their first record of came out in 2010. That same year also held the last music video work from the deliciously twisted British director Chris Cunningham ("New York Is Killing Me" by Gil-Scott Heron), but thankfully he's stepped back into the spotlight as well, by crafting a documentary and music video combo surrounding Warpaint and their new tunes.

The creative mind behind videos such as Aphex Twin's "Come To Daddy", Portishead's "Only You", and "Sheena is a Parasite" by The Horrors, Cunningham is a director remarkably consistent in giving each project that he tackles a unique spin. For his work with Warpaint, he spent over two years with the band—comprised of founding trio Emily Kokal, Theresa Wayman, and Jenny Lee Lindberg—as they wrote, rehearsed, and recorded their latest album. And now a new documentary aims to explore that process, as well as offer reimagined music videos for each track.

Showcasing elements from both the documentary and music videos, a new clip (via Pitchfork) uses Warpaint's new single "Love Is To Die" to confirm that Cunningham's mysterious sensibilities are well and present once more, but this time mixed with an intimate look into the established band's dynamic. It's bound to be an interesting result; no release date set yet, but check out the new clip below in the meantime.
