Title: Movie Quotes You Use Too Much In Real Life
Post by: polkablues on April 29, 2010, 06:54:58 PM
I saw a similar thread on the CHUD message board (I swear I don't post there, I was just checking out the Lost discussion thread), and thought it would be interesting to see what film quotes we, the fascinating and intelligent people at Xixax, incorporate into our everyday lives, in contrast to the knuckle-draggers who post on the CHUD boards.  I'll start it off:

Often, when I'm being congratulated for something, I'll toss in, "I guess the only thing I can say is, I promise to keep rocking and rolling and to keep making better films."  Actually, I usually misquote it and say "movies" rather than "films", but I'm working on that.

If I notice a friend of mine blatantly checking out a girl, he gets a "How's the peeping, Tommy?"

Big Lebowski is a constant source: "Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man," "You're out of your element, Donny!" or the answer to any instance of the question, "What is that?" -- "Obviously you're not a golfer."

If my girlfriend and I have to split up somewhere, like if I have to park the car while she goes into the restaurant to put our names in, I'll slip in a Last of the Mohicans-style "Stay alive!  Whatever may occur!  I will find you!"  She rolls her eyes, but she hasn't dumped me yet, so I have to assume she's okay with it.

Your turn.  Go.

"You are a fool, [person's name], and you will lose everything."

from Harry Potter but really I just stole
it from my uncle because I've never seen Harry Potter.

Mostly stuff from french movies of course

I use "Stop crying your sniveling ass. Stop this nonsense " alot. Usually after I kicked someone.

It tends to be excessively goofy, try-too-hard 'cool' statements for me, like:

"Awesome. Awesome to the max." (Futurama)

or:

"Charles" (The Ice Storm)

I have also sometimes said to the ladies (and guys):

"I wanna be ON you." (Anchorman)

And climbing the ranks lately has been:

"She's in danger of getting her hair pushed behind her ear." (Zombieland)

The problem comes when you've said these things so often ironically that they start to lose their quotation marks and slowly just become how you talk...

Awww shit, Polka's giving Pas a run for his money!

Loving this already. To name a few:

Anytime anyone of my friends does something uber-pretentious or snooty:

"What are you, a fuckin' world traveler?" (My Cousin Vinny)

Gay friends and I way over-quote Mean Girls:

"[Mom] Can you go fix your hair?"

Stop trying to make _________ happen! It's not going to happen!

"So if you're from Africa, why are you white?"

One of my more recent staples, from Weeds:

"That should merit you getting some cock-amole on her face-adilla."

My second quote (How's the peeping, Tommy?) was from Talented Mister Ripley, in case anyone didn't recognize that one. My first quote should be obvious to everyone on this board. Except Pas, I mean.

i use "no way wade, no way" from fargo...
"the occasional acid flashback"  "a lot of ins, a lot of outs", from lebowski
"and that's that", mainly from the gangster scorsese pics
"let's shag ass" from the royal tenembaums
"what's shaking", which i've heard in a couple of altman films
"welly welly welly well..." from clockwork orange
"a little of the old...(insert whatever here)", from clockwork too...

Recently, "I'm fed up with this world!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LR1oG8-JajM).

also, the following by Sy Ableman (A Serious Man):

"...you, you are jesting?"
"I seriously fucked your wife, Larry." (note: in the movie I think its actually," I fucked your wife, Larry! I seriously fucked her!" but isn't slightly misquoting part of the fun?)

I'm not much of a quote puller, but I do use, "How goes it?" (SLC Punk!) as my adopted greeting to people. In fact I have used it for so long with so many people that I know a lot of friends who have copied me without realizing where I got it from.

Ha.

Every time I can't properly explain something to somebody, I now resort to, "I mean, even I don't understand the dead cat."

Whenever I see Amanda Seyfried, I have an irresistible urge to say either, "I can put my whole fist in my mouth," "No, you have your cousins and then your first cousins...," or "It's sixty-eight degrees and there's a...thirty percent chance that it's already raining."

i'd say the two i use the most are both from the big lebowski

"that's interesting man. that's fucking interesting."

and

"...really ties the room together."

both are said usually out of context.

prime simpsons are highly quotable.

i cant find the quote in english but it's from this scene:

Preparing for Lurleen's television debut, Homer struggles with his string-tie.  Marge notes that while Homer and Lurleen were out judging a greased pig contest, Maggie cut her first tooth.  But Homer isn't listening. Colonel Homer S03E20

when march says "you're not listening!" I quote homer's answer in spanish: claro que podrá! (of course she will!). I use it when I don't want to answer.

lately i've been referencing princess leia's "the more you tighten your grip, the more star systems slip out of your fingers." it's a surprisingly great analogy for so many situations.

and anything from the room. but "do you understand LYFE?" is the most frequent.

"wha' happened?" (a mighty wind) was a staple of my friends for a while.

and YES to the occasional "clevah girl.."!

oh and "yo ass used to be Beautiful." jackie brown. extremely rare.

Excellent! In my experience, this is an undervalued line, often overshadowed by the more famous (but significantly less genius) "You're tearing me apart, Lisa!" that comes right before it.

I quote Wayne's World in everyday life from "I'll use the may I help you riff" to "I never learned how to read" and sometimes just to confuse people "I once thought I had mono for an entire year, turns out I was just really bored"

anytime I get a house tour and it comes to the bedroom, I ALWAYS say, "so this is where the enemy sleeps?" from Almost Famous.

"I'll just walk to the curb from here" god I love when I have the opportunity to use this line

and the cliche "I'm walking here" is said often in my house.

Haha, yeah I use that one quite a lot too. Though it's one of those quotations that doesn't obviously announce itself as a movie reference, so it can seem like you're passing it off as your own joke if the person doesn't know the film - this is a moral grey area: are you required to explain that it comes from Annie Hall, or do you let your friend think that you just made an excellent funny? Ah, the politics of movie quotes...

Last night my gf made chili and welcomed me in the house by saying : "Welcome to my chili con carnaval!" in english, too.

I thought that was pretty funny/surprising of her because she never quotes anything.

That Scott Tenorman episode is so good though that it shouldn't be surprising.

Pitch Perfect has usurped Mean Girls' place as the super-popular film that gets quoted all the damn time in my household.

- "Damn, prison changed you."

- "Make good choices!"

- "Not a good enough reason to use the word 'penetrate.'"

- "Yeah, no, don't put me down for cardio."

- "Nothing makes a woman feel more like a girl than a man who sings like a boy."

Whenever someone is laughing AT me and not with me, I always respond with a quick "Laugh it up, FUZZBALL." (Empire Strikes Back)

It happened to make my now girlfriend laugh every time while I was courting her, so I stuck with it without telling her it was a Star Wars quote. Mutual friend blew my cover. She still loves me but I don't quote that line anymore. Kinda lost it's magic.
