Title: Spoon: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga ~ THE BEST ALBUM OF 2007 (So Far)!
Post by: modage on February 01, 2005, 10:32:15 PM
Exclusive: Spoon reveal details of new album, due in May
Source: Pitchfork Media

We've finally got the scoop, baby-- Spoon's fifth long player, now-finally-entitled Gimme Fiction , is complete and set to be released May 10 via Merge Records, the band's home since 2000's Loveways EP. And we don't want to blow our cred and sound like fanboys (and girls) or anything here, but we're pretty fucking excited. Yeah, like Who's The Boss on DVD excited. Star Jones at a seafood buffet excited. Sexually excited. And so should you be: Spoon have been rockin' hips consistently since the mid-90s, when Telephono sprang fully-formed from Texas' sole indie hotness hotbed, Austin. Then Britt Daniel and the boys went big time with their second album, got screwed by their record company, wrote a couple songs about it, and eventually ended up on Merge, which really is probably for the best, as it led to 2003's Kill The Moonlight, the band's so-far masterpiece.
But, you know, it's going on three years since Moonlight dropped, and unlike that record, which was released a year after 2001's Girls Can Tell and felt relaxed and maybe even a bit rushed, the band has laboured over Gimme Fiction, with little to no word on the proceedings. Aside from periodically released demos or videos taken from sessions, there was little to tide over the band's rabid fans. But with Merge issuing the new record soon, we're left with a tidy couple of months to repress our big boy crush on Daniel and sharpen our ears for what'll hopefully be a corker. Oh, and we also have a tracklist:

01 The Beast and Dragon, Adored
02 The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine
03 I Turn My Camera On
04 My Mathematical Mind
05 The Delicate Place
06 Sister Jack
07 I Summon You
08 The Infinite Pet
09 Was It You?
10 They Never Got You
11 Merchants of Soul

You may have noticed the band's name in our Coachella report yesterday, cleverly hidden among the Coldplays, NINs (our backwards "N" is at the cleaners), and Bright Eyeses. That, so far, is the only performance Spoon has announced for 2005, but we think you know that we know that you know that they know that that won't be it. Follow?

who else is excited?!  :-D

I listened to it once through, nothing really blew me away.  All of them were passable, nothing I hated.  Near the end of the album, it got interesting in a few places, namely Was It You? and parts of Merchants Of Soul They Never Got You.  But nothing really unique.  What'd you like, what'd I miss?

you missed their last two excellent albums Girls Can Tell and 2002's minimalist masterpiece Kill The Moonlight.  try tracking those down.  i'm just now hearing this new one today, but it grows with each listen, i've heard it through about 3 times now.  theyre a pretty awesome band and i've found that most of my favorite bands/artists today, none of them 'blew me away' on first listen.  for me, some of the most interesting music takes many listens to absorb, because you keep finding new things.  wilco and arcade fire would be two examples of this.  i think spoon are fairly accessible though and very catchy.  so just keep putting it on and i imagine it will grow.

That's the one I own. I used to play "Small Stakes" and "The Way We Get By" quite a lot at the college radio station last year. Great foot tapping songs.

I listened to it again, and you're right, it does grow on you.  Very nice.  What was really pleasant, though, was digging up The Way We Get By from one of their old albums and realizing that, yeah, I've heard it somewhere else before, really liked it, and had no idea where I heard it.  So yeah, where did I hear it?  Haha.  Maybe it was Conan?

Anyway, revisiting, I really like I Turn My Camera On and My Mathematical Mind.  Nothing transcendental (My Mathematical Mind gets close; it's borderline epic), but everything does get better with each listen.  And check that, Merchants Of Soul is really nice too.  Love the piano from the get-go, and the violins.  The staticky distortion heard in the guitars in some of these songs is probably the most unique thing about these guys.  Maybe it's just me.

So yeah, I've listened to this even more over the past month since it came out again.  Spoon is still very good, I'm still very impressed, but it's still no Extraordinary Machine (sorry, mod).  And Extraordinary Machine is still no When The Pawn, but that's another thread.

Best tracks?  I Summon You and They Never Got You.  I Summon You for its chilling lyrics, and They Never Got You for its brilliant instrumental it drifts off into during its final minutes.  Very inspiring, that's all I can say about it.  Makes you feel like you can do anything, makes you feel like you can fly, and if that's the only thing I could ask of music, that would be it.

The album still has some weak tracks I can't quite forgive.  I like them okay, but I almost want to skip them when they come on, which isn't good.  Things like Sister Jack, The Infinite Pet, and The Delicate Place should really stay the hell away (though Delicate Place is the most tolerable of those three).

The Beast and Dragon, Adored and The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine are such a strong opening that those weak tracks can be forgiven.  I really love the fantasy fiction theme that seems to be running through this album, and the story told in Monsieur Valentine really elevates that.

I Turn My Camera On and My Mathematical Mind are so catchy, but it's a shame there's no ultimate punch to them.  These songs just kind of plateau and never really go anywhere transcendental.  They could be better, even though they're very well done as they are.  Merchants Of Soul is a good ending, but the album probably should've ended with They Never Got You.  Even though it's too good a track to be stuck at the end of the album, it fits because of its powerful instrumental.

man, i saw spoon last night for the first time and they were AWESOME.  i didnt really have any idea what to expect but they sounded great.  and britt as a frontman was awesome.  like shuffling his feet around and stuff.  the songs were way dancier than i expected, like you could not stop moving throughout the whole show.  it was GREAT.  they also played a great setlist of every song i really wanted to hear and even songs which i dont care for as much on the album rocked hard live.  shaftr, you might like to know they came out to prince.  and i turn my camera on was     cause you never really know with some of these 'indie' acts what their stage prescence (or lack thereof) will be but they were rocking like they pwned the place.  and they did, it was sold out.  see this band, now.  you will love them even more.

Largely due to this forum, I went out and bought Girls Can Tell, then Kill The Moonlight a week later. I had never heard Spoon prior to this. Girls is catchy enough. I should probably like it more than I do. Nothing really stands out on it for me. Just a bunch of decent songs. I willl dutifully continue to play it and hopefully it will grow. Moonlight, on the other hand, grabbed me from the start. Love it. Haven't heard anything from the new one yet. I wanted to start near the beginning. Anyway, thanks Mod for pushing this band and compelling me to seek them out. By the way, have you heard A Series of Sneaks? How is it?

i'll be honest.  i got into them in 2002 when Kill The Moonlight came out and I was reading about it everywhere and downloaded Girls Can Tell which I did not get into for years.  it wasnt until recently that i replayed that stuff and really liked it.  a series of sneaks i think has a handful of good songs but for the most part is sort of skippable, (i've never even heard their debut album telephono).  so in my mind, spoons catalog starts with GCT where they sort of became the modern spoon.  the new cd is great, and you will like it.  hold onto GCT though, cause maybe not now, but someday you will get into it.

I saw these guys last night. It was a good show, sold out.

They rocked pretty hard. Highlights for me included the first three songs off Gimme Fiction (Beast and Dragon Adored, Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine, I Turn My Camera On.) My Mathematical Mind definitely benefitted from being played live. I was never a big fan of that song until last night. They also played some stuff from Girls Can Tell, like Me and the Bean. The crowd went nuts for Small Stakes and The Way We Get By, but that's no surprise. Mod, you are right, the songs are very danceable. Actually, I read somewhere that Britt Daniels' original intention was to make Gimme Fiction a dance album. Oddly, the crowd was very subdued throughout the evening. Mostly just a lot of headbobbing going on. It's not hard to see how these guys have achieved some success. They have a veritable arsenal of really solid songs.

I think the album is fantastic. Not the best of the year, but it deserves recognition for one of the best of the year. It's so much different than kill the moonlight. I had alot of fun with kill the moonlight, but never really spent time with it, as in pacing around the living room listening to it, just playing it during hangouts and in the backgrounds. Gimme Fiction has me pacing, The Beast And Dragon, Adored is a great opener, really sets the mood for the album. I think my favorite track is my mathematical mind, it's just really fun and reallyyyy good.  I wish it was a little longer, but who really needs filler? Good album.

You've gotta get "Telophono".  If for nothing else than the song "Plastic Mylar", which is my favorite Spoon song there is.  And I agree about "Series of Sneaks"... a little bit of cream amidst the filler.  I haven't heard the new album yet, but I'm hoping there's a little more of a return to the rock edge that they stepped away from on "Kill The Moonlight" (not that there was anything wrong with that).

So I was thinking I might pick this up tomorrow. I have no idea what it - or the band - sounds like. Albums referenced in this thread, perhaps not in relation to this album whatsoever but referenced nonetheless and thus comparable in a subconscious manner, include DMB (who I nearly hate) and Fiona Apple (who I adore beyond reason) and Ryan Adams (who puts me to sleep) and Sujifan Stevens (who I love).

However, I haven't bought enough albums this year, and this seems popular and the cover is cool, so I'm going to follow the crowd and try it out.

I don't know why, but they remind me of the 80s and not in a The Killers Are Trying Really Hard way
they have a pretty bare kind of sound (?) which throws that off

The closest of those listed musicians that matches Spoon is Runhg, Ryahng, oh god, I can't even say it without getting nauseous

Spoon is good though, I am betting you'll like it

As soon as I picked it up and saw the track listing, I recognized that I Turn The Camera On song, which I've heard a handful of times and kinda liked. So now...I've almost made it through the whole thing so far, and part of me likes it and part of me is kinda bored. It reminds of listening to the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack, where the Placebo stuff is good and all but it really just makes you want to go listen to some vintage Bowie. This is like that for me at the moment.

It's actually really hard for more straightforward rock/pop to impress me these days, but let's see if that whole growing-on-you-thing works.

I'm a little disappointed.  Not my favorite album of the year so far.  That would be the Stereophonics' "Language, Sex, Violence, Other?"... which itself isn't as good as their last album, "You Gotta Go There To Come Back".

How can a Spoon album not have a single catchy song on it?   :yabbse-undecided:

I'm trying so hard, I swear to god... I've loved Spoon for so long, I feel I owe it to them.  But this album just feels more like good background music than anything I want to actively listen to.

Who knows, though.  Maybe it'll sneak up on me, kind of like Bright Eyes' "Lifted" did (I was bored pantsless by that album the first time I listened to it, and now I'm addicted).  I'm not giving up... I just miss songs like "Utilitarian", or "Reservations", or "I Didn't Come Here To Die"... songs that grab you by the balls and squeeze.

If it matters any that's my least favorite song on there. In fact, I think every other song on there is Great to Excellent, but I usually skip Camera when it comes up.
Thanks, Raikus.  I've seen a lot of adoration for this band over the past few years and had never made the effort to seek them out.  The radio station here started playing that song and it just didn't impress me, but I'll take your word and see if anything else of theirs suits me better.

yeah, 'i turn my camera on' is actaully on eof the weaker songs.  i liked it at first b/c its got some cool falsetto singing r&b hip-hopesque thing going for it...its th emost unique son gonth ealbum...but i seriously think the standout tracks are 'i summon you' and 'missoure valentine'...'i turn my camera on' gets old b/c its the same thing over and over....

i went on a long driving trip and i've had buying this album on the backburner for a while, so i picked it up. first listen through i took it to be a little too straightforward rock. the drums are almost like a metronome and everything is so clean. then after listening to it some more it really sunk into my brain. i also listened to it on headphones the other day and noticed there are a lot of little things sorta burried in the mix.

what spoon album would you recommend next?

"Girls Can Tell".  Their one truly perfect album.  Then "Kill The Moonlight".  If you're still on board at that point, grab "A Series of Sneaks" and "Telefono".

Last summer, after basking in Gimme Fiction's glow long enough, I bought Kill the Moonlight, Girls Can Tell, Love Ways, and later A Series of Sneaks.  After having been acquainted with these guys for over a year, a couple impressions: how are they not more popular?  I Summon You is glorious, and for being rock pop, it should have gotten more attention than it's been given.  It's a great song that should make anyone's ears perk up immediately.  As for the older albums, Kill the Moonlight is okay but somewhat tame.  It does have a few memorable tracks in Stay Don't Go, Paper Tiger, and the ever rockin' Back to the Life.  polka's right, Girls Can Tell is their masterpiece.  So many solid songs, but only two truly amazing ones: Me and the Bean and the beautiful instrumental This Book Is A Movie.  Despite this, I think overall I'm more fond of Gimme Fiction.

I think A Series of Sneaks is a bit underrated.  An apt title, power rock that comes at you quick and leaves an indelible impression starting with Utilitarian, and then with 30 Gallon Tank and Metal Detektor (my favorite on the album), through to Staring at the Board, No You're Not, Quincy Punk Episode and Laffitte Don't Fail Me Now.  The Love Ways EP is also incredibly solid, with all tracks worthy of more than just a few listens.

Recently, I got a hold of Telephono and Soft Effects EP, and was amused but not blown away by anything yet.  All of their stuff takes a while to grow on you and must be given a chance.  From Telephono, Not Turning Off and Nefarious are standouts (not to mention Nefarious is darkly hilarious).  Soft Effects hasn't really gelled for me yet, though Mountains to Sound is a solid opening to their typical hey, look-what-we-can-do EP.

any know what song AMC was using to promote their new series?
it featured piano and i know it's not on Gimme Fiction of Girls Can Tell.
the simple guess would be Kill the Moonlight, but i'm more hoping someone knows exactly what i'm talking about.

Here's a nice little review of A Series of Sneak: http://www.cokemachineglow.com/reviews/spoon_sneaks1998.html

Anyway, Spoon is one of my favorite bands. I love all of their albums except for Telephono and the EPs which I think are decent (except for the Agony of Laffitte, love that shit).

Anything You Want. Oh man. I tell you what.

I haven't seen the ad, but from your description it's almost certainly off of Kill The Moonlight, and it's most likely "The Way We Get By".

I think you gotta give Telephono another chance.  For one thing, "Plastic Mylar" is still my favorite Spoon song of all time.

New song. http://filexoom.com/files/2007/3/28/65636/Ghost.mp3

It sounds very mature, almost reminds me of what Small Stakes would sound like had they made it NOW, but nothing like a single so maybe it's just a leaked track, or even a B-Side.

I hear no Jon Brion, so maybe he didn't work on the new album.

One of my most anticipated albums of the summer.

Well, it hasn't leaped up the list of my favorite Spoon songs, but I definitely dug it, and I'm sure I would like it even better in the context of the album.  I like how it feels like a bit of a departure from the overly smooth production that turned me off of Gimme Fiction; it has that level of rawness that I love and expect from Spoon.  But really, all it's going to take for me to prefer the new album to Gimme Fiction is simply not having "I Turn My Camera On" on it.

A lot of these songs sound like a mix between "Was It You" and songs like "The Way We Get By" or "Take the Fifth". Only song I skip is "The Ghost of You Lingers". Favorites so far are "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb" and "Don't You Evah".

you missed their last two excellent albums Girls Can Tell and 2002's minimalist masterpiece Kill The Moonlight.  try tracking those down.  i'm just now hearing this new one today, but it grows with each listen, i've heard it through about 3 times now.  theyre a pretty awesome band and i've found that most of my favorite bands/artists today, none of them 'blew me away' on first listen.  for me, some of the most interesting music takes many listens to absorb, because you keep finding new things.  wilco and arcade fire would be two examples of this.  i think spoon are fairly accessible though and very catchy.  so just keep putting it on and i imagine it will grow.

modage I just took your advice from some time ago about this band (and the birth of the new album), I must say most of it is just great. Thank you people.

I've been listening to it since it leaked. It's good, but not great. It's just a cute, fun, short record. It lacks the creativeness of Gimme Fiction. You will not find ANY epic tracks on Gax4 like Gimme Fiction had with The Beast And Dragon, Adored and My Mathematical Mind.

It's a summer record. It's a definite step backwards, but in a good way, since it matches their earlier work well, but doesn't surpass it.

Britt Daniel is an amazing musician though.

i think my favorite of the last 3 is Girls. KTM isn't bad, but i don't get why they didn't flesh out the super short songs on side 2.

his voice sounds higher and different than on any other track of theirs i've heard (to me anyways). sorta like McCartney and When I'm Sixty-Four - it was sped up.

i'll take this as the sarcasm it is, but try this:

if you have headphones try to listen to the track and really single out the main vocal.

before i ever messed with recording i never thought about all the types of reverbs, eq, etc, that are used all the time. beforehand i always thought John Lennon had an odd voice and it wasn't until later that i learned he tried to bury his voice a lot so he would put it through different stuff.

for instance with Kill the Moonlight. on the first track - notice the reverb or echo effect on britt's vocals? every time i hear that i think of richard ashcroft/the verve and the urban hymns album because they use a very similar reverb.

This is like when I used to always hear a fart early and at the halfway part of The Tourist on OK Computer. I went nuts and spent years throwing the song through different audio machines and programs trying to pinpoint that noise and it's cause and effect.

Then I stopped smoking pot.

Then I got my drivers license.

you get a 7" with two non-album tracks that is signed by Britt. i lucked out and happened to check up on the album on Merge the day it went on preorder. that afternoon i tried to post here but the post wouldn't go through for some reason.

13.50 no shipping charge got me:

-the album in nice glossy digipak with bonus disc (i think all the first pressings will have this)
-gagaga button
-Merge sticker
-pretty large gagaga poster
-band signed 7" with Underdog demo and non-album track with super long title

apparently Britt signs his name, "BD."

i haven't heard the record yet, but i did see the Underdog video yesterday and it was great - appears to be one unbroken shot, but i do remember a place early that could have been a Rope-esque edit.

i'm glad you put Don't You Evah on there. this is my favorite on the album and it's getting neglected in all the reviews i've read (other than to mention that it's a cover) while people are going 'ga ga' over Cherry Bomb. i love the backing to that track (i keep thinking of the Stones' Under My Thumb) but the vocals are too distorted and it's just not very melodic to me. i still like it, but not like everyone else seems to.

i'm really wondering what the original version of Don't sounds like...

nah man i love the beast and dragon adored. gimmie fiction is probably my favorite album of '05. couldn't really put every spoon song that i like on there because it would quickly become a mellon collie type collection. i just put a couple songs on there from each album that i thought would best grab my friend's attention.

I like the part where I had no clue a new Spoon album was in the works (other than "hey, it's been over two years!") and then it leaked.

Before Destruction is de(struct-a)licious!

Are you quite certain, love?  Is Love Forever?  Wow.  Just two knee-jerk reactions, 'cause I'm loving this even more than Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, which was so slight, especially after the majesty of Gimme Fiction.  I wanna talk, but first I wanna listen.  Thanks for the heads up in the Now Playing thread.  More later!

Spoon is a band I'm always interested in hearing new things from, though I haven't loved one of their albums unreservedly since Girls Can Tell. They started getting really good at production from Kill the Moonlight on, which is great and they've done nothing but impressive work since then, but I still always long for the rawness of their first three albums.

The loosest they've sounded in over a decade. I'm for it.

Spoon teased a new album recently, and released a single on Spotify.  So, while the world may be going to Helena Handbasket, there's that.

Spoon's new album is pretty damn good.  Hot Thoughts is such a catchy title track, and I really love the ending track, Us.  Like nothing they've ever done before, though if pressed I would say shades of This Book is a Movie or maybe stuff on A Series of Sneaks.  The song Shotgun is deserving of a better title.  Those are the ones that stick out so far, though I've only had a week and a half of commute time to listen to them yet.
