Can anyone tell me what the term "Check the gate!!"  means when the director shouts CUT!????????????

Can anyone tell me what the term "Check the gate!!"  means when the director shouts CUT!????????????

checking the gate is done when you are changing set ups. when someone "checks the gate", they are checking the film gate to see if there are any hairs or particles in it-- if there happens to be a hair in the gate, they want to catch  it before the set - up is torn down, so they can re-shoot it with a new mag.
