LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Acclaimed Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo is to direct a Hollywood remake of the classic French film "The Red Circle," the industry press reported.

Woo has signed on to make an updated version of the 1970 movie made by his idol, French director Jean Pierre-Melville, whose work has had a profound influence on the Asian filmmaker.

Industry bible Daily Variety said the new version of the film would be made by Paramount Pictures, produced by Woo and his partner Terrence Chang, and will be written by Jeff Pinkner.

"John has been obsessed with the original film since he saw it, and you can see some influence on his Hong Kong films," said Chang, who teamed up with Woo to form Lion Rock Productions.

"John has wanted to go back to his roots a bit, and this is a good opportunity to make something different from the rest of his American films," he said.

The original film noir-inspired "The Red Circle" starred French actor Alain Delon as a thief who teams up with an escaped murderer to commit a robbery as the police close in on them.

Woo has drawn on Melville's work for inspiration in past films, including using elements of the Frenchman's "Le Samourai" in Woo's "The Killer."

The Hong Kong director has become one of Hollywood's hottest and busiest properties in recent years, making blockbusters such as 2003's "Paycheck" with Ben Affleck and "Mission: Impossible II" (2000) starring Tom Cruise.

The 58-year-old is currently either in production with or planning no fewer than five movies, excluding "The Red Circle."

exactly, so is there any chance of this thread being updated exclusively in regards to the red circle, other than its cancellation, any time soon? no.

when sumthing as vague as "new project announced" comes along, especially when he's got like a million other things in development, no cast hav been announced, it might not even be made.. it generally goes in the director's thread as a bit of news.

for example, if there's no director thread, and it's just a bit of goss u heard about brad pitt being interested in sum movie, put it in HIS thread, it's not a coming attraction.

redirection and lockage.
