I'm a little jealous of my friend who is getting one, and will now have his portfolio of video work with him where ever he goes, and can show it to anyone.

It'd be great when people ask what you do and you can just whip it out your pants and show em instead of just talking about it.

Not that that's what I'd use it for, I just saying, is all.

It's not what it does so much as what it represents, and what it facillitates. It's the delivery of on-demand HD content that's really going to shake things up.

And the remote control for the new iMac? That's a big hint right there, too.

Yeah, Apple is really doing a nice job of slowly, subtly developing iTunes into the sort of home entertainment hub Microsoft has always had wet dreams about. The iPod is just a nifty extension of this. It's gonna be exciting to see where this goes.

Andyk, you mentioned in a thread a few months ago that the company you're developing will have a lot of downloadable content for cell phones and such, right? I assume you're gonna be jumping all over this.

True. But the Microsoft Media Center is going to have a huge impact. The problem is that they havent been able to advertise it and get as much attention as Apple does with these products.

Still, I have my Mac connected to my Plasma and its the best thing you can ever dream of.

Quote from: GhostboyAndyk, you mentioned in a thread a few months ago that the company you're developing will have a lot of downloadable content for cell phones and such, right? I assume you're gonna be jumping all over this.

Yeah. We are launching KOOSY in a couple of weeks. The cell phones part is not done yet, and its the less important. The main thing is that you can download movies, music, tv shows, videos, etc... but its all done as a Community so you can discuss it and even share the content with friends.

Also, with the film production company we signed a big deal for digital distribution, and that is going to be big for everyone in the movie biz in the next couple of years.

I've got an HP Media Center PC, and I gotta tell ya, Microsoft is going to have to seriously overhaul their Media Center software is they expect it to have any impact.  It's clunky, hard to use, and it doesn't really do anything that you can't do with a handful of smaller, quicker, third-party programs.  Even the remote control is mostly useless, as I rarely (never) watch my computer from the other side of the room.
Title: Re: Apple is the best thing ever

But the Media Center is not to have as a computer... but as a Media Center. You connect it to the TV and the Home Theatre, and your Cable Box. Then you can record programs, watch two at the same time, download stuff and watch it on the TV, etc. Then the remote makes sense too.

They have to make it nicer and easier... but they will have that next year with the new operating system

Hollywood Calls for Cut of Video IPod Pie

In a show of unity, five unions representing actors, writers and directors issued a joint call for talks to make sure their members get a cut of revenue generated by the sale of TV shows on Apple's iTunes software.

The unions sent a clear message to TV producers.

"We have not yet heard from the responsible employers of our members," their joint statement said. "But we look forward to a dialogue that ensures that our members are properly compensated for this exploitation of their work."

The presidents of unions representing Hollywood writers and actors were lunching at a popular Beverly Hills restaurant on Wednesday when they saw a TV report about a deal to allow episodes of ABC shows such as "Lost" to be downloaded for portable viewing on the new video iPod from Apple Computer Inc.

In doing the deal with Apple, ABC became the first network to allow viewers to download episodes of their shows the day after they air on TV. Other networks are expected to follow shortly.

The development was news to Patric Verrone, president of the Writers Guild of America, west, and John Connolly, president of the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists.

The two called their counterparts at the Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America, East, which covers writers east of the Mississippi.

The show of unity was unusual, coming from unions that are sometimes at odds over issues such as royalties from DVD sales.

"We developed a new piece of stationary that never existed before," Verrone said of the joint statement.

The unions have not yet called ABC or its parent, The Walt Disney Co., to discuss how much of the $1.99 that Apple is charging for a single episode should go to writers, actors and directors.

"The guilds are our business partners, and we always welcome a dialogue with them on any business-related issue that affects their members," ABC said in a statement.

The groups already have agreements that cover the re-use of their work on the Internet or in "pay per view" models, such as video on demand. The unions also have newer agreements covering work produced for the Internet.

Under the WGA contract, writers are entitled to 1.6 percent of the license fee paid by networks to the producers of a show. The ABC hits "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives," are produced by Touchstone Studios, Disney's TV production arm.

Actors are entitled to 3.6 percent of the license fee.

A conflict could arise if studios decide to treat the Internet downloads the same as a DVD sale, which might result in lower payments.

"We have to learn more about the actual technology," Verrone said. "I'm thrilled by the notion I can watch my shows in the palm of my hand, but I also want to make sure we are paid appropriately."

I converted to Apple about 18 months ago when I bought a 15" Powerbook.  About a year ago, I bought a 40 gb ipod.  I love them both, I just get excited/sad when they put out something new.  Excited because it is normally great.  Sad because I can't have it.

Just sold my 40GB iPod Photo and Im buying the new iPod now... I have the Black 4GB Nano also cause it was a gift from a friend... I use a 12" Powerbook, which I got in May after changing my old one... but if they come out with new computers I will definetly change it.

I travel to Argentina once a month, and Apple products are super expensive there. For example, the same computer that costs 1500 here costs at least 3000 there. So I can sell my old used Powerbook and get enough money to buy the new one here.

Well... considering that up to today PC controlled 99% of the market... and that young audience is at least 60% of that (excluding companies) I would say they did reach to everyone they wanted. They still control the market, and they still have a lot to do with Apple. Especially now that Apple will have Intel processors, it will basically be same as a PC with a different software.

What Apple did, is that it made the transition to the Digital Era much easier to everyone... I have been involved in it, MP3s, digital video and music for years... and nothing made the switch like the iPod and iTunes did... thats the most impressive thing I believe... and the way they managed to stay ahead in this game which is very hard... the iPod will definitely be Apple's #1 accomplishment ever... and it has nothing to do with PCs

Like you said, the iPod has switched people over to Apple from PC companies, even though there are HP iPods. The media and the products themselfs have made Apple and the iPod very stylish and hip. Young people (i'm young too) i've encountered who have iPods and PCs want to switch over to Apple computers. Nothing says "Im cool" to a collage kid like an iPod Nano, and titanium G4 powerbook does.

Snooping fears plague new iTunes

Apple has been criticised over a new version of its iTunes program that can keep track of a user's listening habits.

The updated software includes a feature that recommends tracks similar to the music being played via iTunes.

Users said Apple had to be more open about data being collected because the recommendations use unique identifiers for a computer and iTunes account.

Apple said it did not keep any data gathered after it made recommendations.

Track back

The row arose following the update to the iTunes software released by Apple on 10 January.

The new version includes a MiniStore feature that recommends tracks to buy similar to those a user is listening to.

MiniStore looks for similar tracks when a user clicks on a tune in a playlist. It even makes recommendations about songs that were not bought via the hugely popular online music store.

Soon after the update was released, blogger Marc Garrett wrote a journal entry about MiniStore and the data it passes back to Apple.

Further work by other bloggers such as Kirk McElhearn found that the data being sent back to Apple to make the recommendations included artist, title, genre as well as unique identifiers for a computer and iTunes account.

Privacy advocates complained that Apple had not done enough to warn people about the information that was being collected, nor what was being done with the collected data.

By contrast Apple does mention in the licence agreement for iTunes that it contacts the Gracenote music database to work out which album is being played via the program.

"Apple should be clear about its information gathering practices," wrote Mr Garrett on his blog.

Data loss

Apple said in response to a request for comment: "Apple does not save or store any information used to create recommendations for the MiniStore".

On its support website, the company has posted and updated information about how to turn the MiniStore feature off. Information on the page has been updated since the row about iTunes blew up.

"iTunes sends data about the song selected in your library to the iTunes Music Store to provide relevant recommendations," says the entry on its support website.

"When the MiniStore is hidden, this data is not sent to the iTunes Music Store."

Digital detective work by bloggers has confirmed that no data is passed to Apple when MiniStore is turned off.

Macworld magazine reported on its website that an Apple official had told it that nothing was done with the information collected.

The magazine called on Apple to be upfront about the information it was collecting and what was being done with it.

In the past both Microsoft and RealNetworks have got into trouble for not disclosing that they were identifying users individually and monitoring what they were watching.

I just got a 17-inch MacBook Pro. It's a dream machine (so far, at least - I've only had it for a few hours).

I haven't had any trouble porting over software from my old G4 iMac - at least not yet. MS Office, Photoshop, Illustrator, Final Draft, MM Screenwriter, etc. all work fine. I've already sent off for my crossgrade Final Cut Studio discs, so hopefully once I get those, I'll have a nice little portable studio.

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs on Tuesday made the company's long-awaited jump into the mobile phone business and renamed the company to just "Apple Inc.," reflecting its increasing focus on consumer electronics.

The iPhone, which starts at $499, is controlled by touch, plays music, surfs the Internet and runs the Macintosh computer operating system. Jobs said it will "reinvent" the telecommunications sector and "leapfrog" past the current generation of hard-to-use smart phones.

"Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything," he said during his keynote address at the annual Macworld Conference and Expo. "It's very fortunate if you can work on just one of these in your career. ... Apple's been very fortunate in that it's introduced a few of these."

He said the name change is meant to reflect the fact that Apple has matured from a computer manufacturer to a full-fledged consumer electronics company.

"I didn't sleep a wink last night," he said. "I was so excited."

During his speech, Jobs also unveiled a TV set-top box that allows people to send video from their computers and announced the number of songs sold on its iTunes Music Store has topped 2 billion.

Apple shares jumped more than 6 percent on the announcements, while the stock of rival smart-phone makers plunged.

Jobs demonstrated the iPhone's music capabilities by playing "Lovely Rita, Meter Maid," from the Beatles' "Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," as the album's psychedelic album art graced a wide-screen monitor.

IPhone uses a patented touch-screen technology Apple is calling "multi-touch."

"We're going to use a pointing device that we're all born with," Jobs said. "It works like magic. ... It's far more accurate than any touch display ever shipped. It ignores unintended touches. It's super smart."

The phone automatically synchs your media _ movies, music, photos _ through Apple's iTunes Music Store. The device also synchs e-mail content, Web bookmarks and nearly any type of digital content stored on your computer.

"It's just like an iPod," Jobs said, "charge and synch."

The phones, which will operate exclusively on AT&T Inc.'s Cingular wireless network, will start shipping in June. A 4-gigabyte model will cost $499, while an 8-gigabyte iPhone will be $599, Jobs said.

IPhone is less than a half-inch thin _ less than almost any phone on the market today. It comes with a 2-megapixel digital camera built into the back, as well as a slot for headphones and a SIM card.

In a demonstration Tuesday, Jobs slid his finger across the display to reveal a home screen and then scrolled through a list of songs.

To make a call, users can tap out the number on an onscreen keypad or scroll through their contacts and dial with a single touch.

Apple is also introducing what it calls "visual voicemail," so users can jump to the most important messages rather than have to listen to all of them in order.

The phone supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology and can detect location from Global Positioning System satellites. It also can send and display e-mail and text messages. Apple is partnering with Yahoo Inc. on Web-based e-mail and Google Inc. on maps.

With a few finger taps, Jobs demonstrated how to pull up a Google Maps site and find the closest Starbucks to the Moscone Center. He then prank-called the cafe and ordered 4,000 lattes to go before quickly hanging up.

"My initial reaction is that this product actually lives up to the extensive hype, and I'm not easily impressed," said Avi Greengart, mobile device analyst for the research firm Current Analysis.

Also Tuesday, Jobs said Apple will begin taking orders immediately for the $299 video box called Apple TV. It will ship next month.

The gadget is designed to bridge computers and television sets so users can more easily watch their downloaded movies on a big screen. A prototype of the gadget was displayed by Jobs in September when Apple announced it would sell TV shows and movies through its iTunes online store.

The product could be as revolutionary to digital movies as Apple's iPod music player was to digital music. Both devices liberate media from the computer, allowing people to enjoy digital files without being chained to a desktop or laptop.

"It's really, really easy to use," Jobs told the crowd at San Francisco's Moscone Center before demonstrating the system with a video clip of "The Good Shepherd." "It's got the processing horsepower to do the kinds of things we like to do."

Apple TV will come with a 40-gigabyte hard drive that stores up to 50 hours of video. It features an Intel Corp. microprocessor and can handle videos, photos and music streamed from up to five computers within the wireless range.

Jobs also said Apple has sold more than 2 billion songs on its popular iTunes music download service, catapulting the company into the top ranks of music sellers worldwide. Apple, which sells 58 songs per second, or 5 million songs a day, sells more songs than Amazon.com and ranks behind only Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target as a music retailer.

"We couldn't be happier with the growth rate of iTunes," Jobs said.

He said Apple will sell digital movies from Paramount. Apple has partnered with Disney for several months, offering about 100 movies on iTunes. With Paramount's selection, it will have 250 movies available for downloading on the site.

With Tuesday's launches, it remains to be seen whether the leading seller of digital music players can take will find it as easy to jump into the phone business. Apple could use a megahit along the lines of its iconic iPod to divert investors' attention from the stock options-backdating scandal that has tainted its reputation.

The backdating of stock options, which has been widespread among Silicon Valley companies, involves pegging stock options to favorable grant dates in the past to boost the recipients' award. It isn't necessarily illegal, but securities laws require companies to properly disclose the practice in their accounting and settle any charges that may result.

In a December filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Apple said Jobs was aware of, or recommended the selection of, some favorable grant dates but he neither benefited financially from them nor "appreciated the accounting implications."

Apple shares were up $5.71 to $91.18 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of $50.16 to $93.16. Meanwhile, shares of other smart-phone makers slid: Treo-maker Palm Inc. dropped 4.7 percent, BlackBerry's Research In Motion Ltd. lost 6.4 percent and Motorola Inc. shed 1 percent.

Apple seeks online music shake-up
Story from BBC NEWS:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/business/6337275.stm

Steve Jobs, the boss of Apple, has urged the world's largest record companies to begin selling songs online without copy protection software.

He said the abolition of copy protection software known as digital rights management (DRM) would be good for consumers and music suppliers.

Copyright protection had failed to tackle piracy, he argued.

The firm behind the iPod has been under pressure to make its iTunes music store compatible with other music players.

It is clear that the record industry has some responsibility, but that does not relieve Apple of responsibility

Consumer rights groups in several European countries have lodged complaints with the firm over the incompatibility of iTunes with other music players.

"We welcome Apple taking this problem seriously, and addressing it at such a high level," said Torgeir Waterhouse, senior adviser to Norway's Consumer Council.

'Best alternative'

The abolition of DRM would enable all MP3 users to access music from any online music store, including iTunes, Mr Jobs said.

"This is clearly the best alternative for consumers and Apple would embrace it in a heartbeat," he said in a statement on Apple's website.

Analysts said such a move would benefit Apple as the market leader in the digital music marketplace.

Apple's iTunes store has sold about 2 billion songs since launching in 2003, and accounts for more than 70% of the US digital music market.

Shared responsibility

Mr Jobs said that if DRM safeguards were dropped, Apple would be in a position to create a download system that could work with devices other than iPods, including Microsoft's recently launched Zune music player.

I think Steve is finally saying something he has wanted to say for a long time - he is not saying this just to grandstand, he really thinks this could open up the market

He called on the world's four biggest music labels - Universal Music, EMI, Sony BMG Music and Warner Music - to begin selling their music catalogues without DRM restrictions.

But Norway's Consumer Council said the issues at stake here go beyond those Mr Jobs have chosen to highlight.

"It is clear that the record industry has some responsibility, but that does not relieve Apple of responsibility," said Mr Waterhouse.

EMI said it was considering Mr Jobs' views, while a spokesman for Universal Music declined to comment.

Music download site Emusic, which sells DRM-free songs in the universally compatible MP3 format, backed Mr Jobs' call for the major labels to drop their restrictions.

"DRM only serves to restrict consumer choice, prevents a larger digital music market from emerging and often makes consumers unwitting accomplices to the ambitions of technology companies," said Emusic boss David Pakman.

"Consumers prefer a world where the media they purchase is playable on any device, regardless of its manufacturer, and not burdened by arbitrary usage restrictions."

Responding to Mr Jobs' comments, Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey said: "I think Steve is finally saying something he has wanted to say for a long time.

"He is not saying this just to grandstand. He really thinks this could open up the market."

Yeah, they bought Final Touch HD (which used to be a 5-10,000 dollar program) and added it into the package as Color. AMAZING. I can't wait to try it out. And some of the features in Final Cut Pro are pretty spectacular. Having timelines recognize the clip settings is going to be really helpful. Now I wish I hadn't bought the student version of Final Cut Studio 1, because I can't upgrade. I'll buy the whole thing again when I get a new Mac, hopefully this fall.

i have FCP studio 1 academic too... i think i'm going to shell out at least for the new academic version, if not for the pro so that i can legally make money off of my editing. i wish i could upgrade, but i definitely don't regret buying 1.

Motion 3 in particular looks unbelievable.

yes, the student and pro editions are the same, but you can't legally sell anything you make with the academic version. i'm not sure what the rules are for putting together a reel to look for jobs, but if it's illegal there really isn't a way for me to get around breaking the law.

creative suite has been out for Mac, i believe... but there is a new one that is designed to run natively on the new Intel processors.

here's the link to the Motion stuff... the individual videos are worth checking out if something in the overview video catches your interest.

I've been making money off mine for a while, so I don't really care about that rule. The only thing that's annoying is that you can't upgrade...you have to buy the new versions. So ultimately, it's worthwhile to just buy the full version.

I don't know...I wouldn't be surprised. I was planning on getting the new Creative Production Suite so I could run After Effects on my Intel Mac, but now I'm thinking that maybe Motion is finally at a comparable level. I'll be getting that, regardless, so I'll give it a spin and see if it fits the bill.

I've never used Motion, but that video Reinhold posted is pretty impressive.  If it can do what AE does, I'll pick up a different version of Creative Suite to have Photoshop and Illustrator.  Plus, I assume you can move clips back and forth between Motion and FCP without having to render them out first like with AE.

i believe that you do have to render clips before exporting them, actually. the difference is that you can just select "open in editor" or simply edit and save the source file without having to take anything out of your timelines.

a program's stability with huge comps also has a lot to do with the specs of the system.

Apple to launch iPhone on June 29

NEW YORK - Apple Inc.'s highly anticipated iPhone will be available June 29, according to both TV commercials broadcast Sunday night and a company spokesman.

The combination cell phone, media player and wireless Web-surfing device will retail for $499 and $599, depending on configuration. It will be offered exclusively by AT&T Inc.'s wireless division, formerly known as Cingular.

The iPhone, which sports no keypad but instead a touch-sensitive screen, was unveiled with great fanfare in early January by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. He said it would appear in stores in June but gave no specific date.

Sunday night's ads showed off several of the gadget's features and ended with the pronouncement that the phone will be available "Only on the new AT&T" and "Coming June 29." One aired on the CW network before a 7 p.m. broadcast of "7th Heaven."

Tom Neumayr, an Apple spokesman, confirmed the June 29 sale date. An AT&T spokespeople did not immediately return a phone call.

In recent months, the company's stock has been served by speculation and excitement over the iPhone. Shares of Apple's stock rose May 25 after a media report said that the iPhone would go on sale June 20. Neither AT&T nor Apple would confirm or deny that date at the time.

my initial thoughts

- coolest looking phone ever made
- so easy and intuitive that after a mere two minutes of playing around you're an expert
- the widescreen is a godsend
- comes w/ its own headphones, which are far superior than the ones that came w/ my ipod. these headphones have a little button on the wire so when you're listening to music and someone calls you, the music automatically fades and you can just press the button and talk w/ out ever touching the phone
- email is superb
- thus far i have yet to put a single scratch on it. and smudges/fingerprints wipe away easily

buzkills
- at&t offers no insurance on these bad boys, so when you inevitably lose it or get mugged, you're fucked
- the at&t edge service is painfully slow. wifi is the way to go, but drains the battery if left on all day
- $545 w/ tax

iPhone Owners Already Dialing In With Complaints
Customers — including MTV News' own Tim Kash — frustrated by long activation times, software glitches, clumsy browsing.
Source: MTV

With great hype comes great backlash.

Despite waiting hours — or days — in line, paying up to thousands on eBay and enduring weeks of relentless hype, some iPhone users are already grousing that the device some have jokingly called the "Jesus Phone" isn't exactly walking on water.

Among the biggest complaints since the phone/ music player/ mini browser went on sale Friday evening is that a number of consumers have had a hard time activating their phones, rendering the pricey devices practically useless. Others have criticized the "bulky" design, incompatibility with iPod add-ons and unimpressive sound quality.

Users who signed up with a new number for the phone apparently had little difficulty diving in, but some of those who tried to bring their old cell phone number over to the new device faced hours — or days — of frustrating delays waiting for exclusive carrier AT&T to get their accounts online. The glitch was, according to an Associated Press story, a result of overloaded servers trying to handle what analysts have estimated were 500,000 new iPhone users who tried to boot up their devices over the weekend.

Without the hookup from AT&T, not even the phone's alarm clock works, but an AT&T spokesperson told AP that the situation had improved by Sunday and that nearly all customers were able to activate their phones within a few minutes after the company made some technical adjustments to cut down on delays.

Experts said the activation problems are not unusual when a huge group of people rush to set up their service on a new phone all at once. But, unfortunately, MTV's own Tim Kash was one of those people who got stuck with a very expensive doorstop over the weekend.

"As soon as I got outside, a guy offered me $1,500 to buy it," said Kash of the 8-gig iPhone he bought on Friday in New York. He immediately hustled into a taxi to avoid being besieged by line-waiters who hadn't yet gotten their hands on one. "I opened the box and the phone is the first thing you see and it looks stunning. It's very clean-looking and fresh and very shiny. I set it up and went to the iTunes store and it said I had to activate it, otherwise all you can do is call 911 with it, and that gets old after a dozen times."

The first issue Kash said he encountered was that he was not allowed to pay for his monthly service or register using his U.K. credit card or overseas Apple account, which barred him from activating the phone. But even after entering his New York address and U.S. bank account number ... nothing.

"It said there was one missing bit of information, so I put it in again, and again and again, and it said the same thing," Kash said, echoing a complaint that showed up a few times from other users on Apple message boards. "At this point, it's Friday night and I've got my new phone and I want it to come out with me. But there's no point if all you can do is slide the thing on the bottom and call 911. I don't want to show a blank screen off to people who want to see how it works."

And, because you can't open the iPhone and insert your own SIM card, Kash said he was stuck with no service all weekend and is now waiting for the initial frenzy to die down before he tries to get his issue sorted. An Apple spokesperson did not return e-mails for comment at press time.

The bad news has not stopped the predictable eBay action, with iPhones (which retail for $499 and $599) going for an average price of more than $900, even though you could order them for list price with free shipping on Apple's site and they were still available in some Apple stores as of Monday (July 2). There were even reports of one weekend auction for a phone where the bidding topped $10,000.

Tech blogs dedicated to Mac products reported a variety of bizarre, seemingly rare hiccups, including one user who said their 8-gigabyte phone briefly displayed a capacity of 80 gigs after being synched. A group of consumers followed by USA Today mostly raved about the new gadget, but some complained that the touch-screen keyboard was hard to use because the keys were too close together, the Internet access was too slow (AT&T is notorious for having one of the slower Internet hookups for phones among the major carriers) and wished that the keyboard expanded for e-mail and text messaging.

And though the San Jose Mercury News praised the phone for allowing you to browse contacts while on a call and instantly synching your address book every time you plug into your PC, the paper complained about a lack of voice dialing and a nagging feeling that the device just doesn't feel like a phone. "The iPhone is beautiful and sleek ... [but] it feels too wide and bulky, particularly when I put it up to my ear to talk."

Another vexing problem is that many of the existing iPod accessories don't work with the iPhone. So, for example, if you're used to plugging your iPod into your car adapter to listen to podcasts you've downloaded on the way to work, you will have to buy a special new adapter in order to do it now.

But with all that said, the phone has been getting rare, almost universal praise from technology writers for its innovative touch-screen design and functionality. And that's helped put it on track to beat sales estimates — Apple has set a goal of selling 10 million by the end of 2008, putting the phone on track to follow the iPod and Mac as Apple's biggest-selling product.

um no, it's not.

90% of the article was bitching about at&t, not apple/iphone. i activated mine saturday morning in a matter of minutes via itunes. it was the most painless activation of a cell phone i've yet to experience, and i have had many cell phones and carriers in my day.

so these kids bitching about it not working b/c it's not activated yet, well wtf do you expect. what phone does anything before being activated. and when in history has a carrier had to deal w/ such a huge influx of new members in one single weekend. minor delays should be expected.

as for the other stupid comments:
1. the keyboard - yes it takes some getting used to, but it's an incredibly smart keyboard in that 9 times out of 10 it knows the word you're trying to type before you get to the 3rd letter. it's far more intuitive than any T9 system i've used. and how many cell phones have curse words automatically integrated into their dictionaries? type in FUC_ and iPhone will fill in the K. tell me your crackberry does that.
2. new adapters for cars - boo-fucking-hoo. any new product will inevitably have new, more advanced adapters. deal w/ it.
3. doesn't feel like a phone? please. it feels much more like a phone than any other smart phone on the market. walk down 5th avenue holding it and you will turn more heads than you ever have. it's the only phone on the planet that could get you laid.

will iPhone 2.0 be better? of course. but the fact remains - the iPhone is so far ahead of anything else out there it's a joke. why else would samsung, sony, nokia, helio, and all the rest of them be shitting their pants (and they are).

HAHA. *splat*

Still, nobody is probably capable of handling half a mil activations in that short a period of time.

I don't understand why Apple couldn't just make it a phone you could use on ANY carrier.

I know the only reason I won't get one is because I don't want to sign a long term deal with AT&T. If I could keep my current carrier, even if I had to pay double what I currently pay a month, I'd go out and get one the second they came out.

They look really neat, and I always wanted to blog about new movies as I'm watching them in the theater.

And what the fuck happens when you bring an iPhone into alltel when it breaks. I bet they call the cops on you. Haul you away in a cyber paddy wagon.

Apple needs to dump AT&T and just go solo. Mike Jackson did it, and where the fuck are the other Jackson brothers these days?

More than waiting on new models and price cuts, I think it will be a long time for Apple to go solo. I think AT&T paid big money for this and its part of their relaunch. Its their battle ship and they will not let others have it.

I dont know what will happen with the warranty... but its the only way I could have an iPhone... I prefer to risk the warranty than to subscribe to the shitty AT&T service.

I really do want an iPhone. I just can't justify buying one right now. it's alot of money, of which I don't have alot of. And I don't know what bugs it has.

Maybe in a couple years I'll get a 3rd or 4th gen iPhone, but until then, it's just not a wise investment. I got an iPod and a Kyocera Strobe, and a laptop, and super glue.

Kal and CBrad are in the unique position that they don't really need to worry about bugs, cause they can buy a new one when the next gen comes out cause they are either self made billionaires or their parents are.

I'm not a billionarie, and my parents arent either (besides I havent asked my parents for money since I turned 17).

However, I can afford an iPhone... and I will do it as soon as its confirmed that I can use it with my T-Mobile account :)

I guess I'm not, or I'd be getting the lame D-WADE SIDEKICK from T-Mobile... instead I got my iPhone today :)

I couldnt fucking resist. I mean, I was going to wait. But there I was walking around and decided to go into that fucking store... I asked a guy about it and he tells me "8gb? I think there is only one left!"... and before I knew it I was signing the fucking credit card on that little terminal... this was two meters inside the store, I didnt even have to walk to the register in the back.

So here I am... trying to figure out if this shit will be unlocked or not before I sign up with AT&SHIT. Worst case scenario I will have to, because this phone is awesome.

The good news is that one of my guys in the office is buying my Blackberry Pearl for $300. So I'm half way covered :)

Because there's no room for a hard drive like in the bigger ipods, so they have to do what they can with flash memory.

Is there a way to go region-free on the Mac Pro?  Being able to play DVDs from any region is the one thing I miss about my PC.  I have the PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-111D drive.  Apparently using VLC doesn't work on the Intel-based Macs.

maybe you could try grabbing something that will reset the number of times you've switched your region. if not, i'm sure a hack is on its way.

attention to anybody who might be on the fence about buying/otherwise obtaining aperture: get it immediately, if for no other purpose than making caps for xixax. the exposure controls alone are worth it. i'm getting an average of 2-3 more stops out of photos that i thought were too dark to bother with, and it just helps you get so much more out of the other color/contrast controls.

and it's by apple so it's fairly intuitive immediately, but i can't wait to get further acquainted with this program. 10 skulls.

Teen trades hacked iPhone for new car

The teenage hacker who managed to unlock the iPhone so that it can be used with cellular networks other than AT&T will be trading his reworked gadget for a new car.

George Hotz, of Glen Rock, N.J., said he had reached the deal with CertiCell, a Louisville, Ky.-based mobile phone repair company.

Hotz posted on his blog that he traded his modified iPhone for "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones."

"This has been a great end to a great summer," Hotz wrote.

The 17-year-old Hotz said he will be sending the three new iPhones to the three online collaborators who helped him divorce Apple Inc's popular product from AT&T's network. The job took 500 hours, or about 8 hours a day since the iPhone's June 29 launch.

Hotz made the deal with Terry Daidone, co-founder of CertiCell, who also promised the teen a paid consulting job.

"We do not have any plans on the table right now to commercialize Mr. Hotz' discovery," Daidone said in a statement.

AT&T Unleashes Lawyers on iPhone Hackers

After a rash of reports over the weekend of hackers who managed to unlock the iPhone—ranging from the iPhoneSIMFree.com team to a 17-year-old kid in New Jersey—AT&T has unsurprisingly decided to rain on the parade, with a little help from its legal team.

Gizmodo is reporting that AT&T has fired off a warning to a group that was planning to sell its iPhone unlocking software. In a press release, a spokesman for iphoneunlocking.com said that AT&T contacted the site early Saturday, warning that the group would run afoul of copyright laws if it went ahead with its planned sale of the software package. The site has decided to hold off releasing the iPhone-unlocking app for now, the spokesman said.

So, all this begs the question: is it legal to unlock the iPhone? Engadget asked a copyright lawyer that very question, and got a rather nuanced answer. According to the attorney, iPhone unlockers are most likely protected by an exception in the DMCA (a law that prohibits the cracking of DRM schemes) that lets you unlock your own phone for the "sole purpose" of using it "lawfully" on a cellular network. However, you can't unlock a phone (including the iPhone) and then sell it; also, Apple and AT&T are free to sue you on the basis of other laws besides the DMCA (and they certainly have the resources—and the incentive—to do so). Bottom line? The lawyer seems to believe that you're probably in the clear as long as you're just unlocking your own iPhone and not selling it on Craigslist; then again, there's no telling what Apple and AT&T have up their legal sleeves. Also, on a practical note, keep in mind that unlocking the phone will probably violate your warranty, so if anything goes wrong, don't look for sympathy from the Apple Genius Bar.

I have an 80 gig black ipod and I will run out space soon so I'm really thinking about selling my ipod and getting one of those 160gb models, but if it's coming in touch screen, I might just wait for that.

Those touch screen iPods are AMAZING.

Apple launches new wireless iPods

SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday unveiled a new version of the company's popular iPod media player that's based on the iPhone, featuring wireless Internet access and a Web browser but not cell phone capability.

Dubbed iPod Touch, the 8-millimeter-thick device and can store photos, music, videos and other digital data. It features the same 3.5-inch, touch-screen display as the iPhone, on which light finger touches allow the user to scroll through menus and use two fingers to resize pictures.

The iPod Touch also has built-in wireless Internet access and the Safari Web browser, including Google and Yahoo search engines and easy access to YouTube videos. The iPhone, which runs on the AT&T cellular network, also includes Wi-Fi.

An 8-gigabyte version will cost $299. A 16-gigabyte version will cost $399. It will be shipped worldwide starting later this month.

"It's one of the seven wonders of the world, it's just incredible," Jobs told employees and journalists gathered at a special media event near downtown San Francisco.

Jobs also unveiled other new iPod models, including an iPod Nano with a 2.5-inch video monitor for watching movies and playing built-in games. The current version has a 2-inch screen but does not play videos.

"It's incredibly tiny. It's incredibly thin," Jobs said of the new Nano, which features a 320-by-240-pixel screen with 24 hours of audio playback. "We think it's really, really beautiful."

The new Nano, which will be in stores starting this weekend, will come in a 4-gigabyte version for $149, and an 8-gigabyte version for $199.

Apple also announced it will be selling ring tones for the iPhone for 99 cents, plus the 99-cent cost of the song. Ring tones from more than 500,000 songs available on iTunes will go on sale next week

I'm really pissed off (as most people) with them lowering the iPhone price $200 already. I mean, its great... but what happened with all the hardcore fans (like myself) that paid $600 less than two months ago? It's not fair. They are getting in big trouble because they are pissing off these hardcore fans that buy the products when they launch. If this becomes a trend where they will reduce the price significantly in little time, people wont buy their products like crazy when they come out.

I saw some bloggers talking about the possibility of rebates and Apple offering these first iPhone buyers iTunes giftcards and other stuff. That could work. If not, its a really bad move by them because it justifies how overpriced the phone was in the first place. Its normal for prices to come down, but after a reasonable amount of time. 2 months its nothing.

agreed. it's f'ed up, and i'm infuriated. i have a 4GB which is basically worthless now. i guess i won't have to give anymore on-the-street-and-subway iphone tutorials, as now every bag of douche and his brother will have one.

you know they could've at least tried to appease the iphoners by providing some much needed software updates (like, uhh, the ability to copy/paste for one) but no, they drop the price 200 bucks and come out with 25 new ipods we really don't need.

To all iPhone customers:

I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.

First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season.

Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced.

Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these.

Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned.

We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple.

Steve Jobs
Apple CEO

Apple warns against hacking into iPhones
Apple says programs that enable the device to work with providers besides AT & T are damaging the handsets.
Source: Los Angeles Times

SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple Inc. issued a warning Monday to iPhone customers who have found ways to uncouple Apple's device from the AT&T Inc. wireless service: If your iPhone breaks, don't come crying to us.

Apple said many of the unauthorized software programs used to "unlock" iPhones from AT&T were damaging the devices. The Cupertino, Calif., company warned that updated software it periodically sent out might not work with phones that had been unlocked -- and could render the iPhones unusable.

Hacking the iPhone is a violation of customers' software license agreement and not covered under the warranty, Apple reiterated.

The warnings came in response to a slew of underground efforts to let the iPhone, which combines an iPod, Web browsing device and cellphone, work with wireless networks other than AT&T.

Since Apple began selling the iPhone in June, some customers have complained that they want the freedom to choose their cellular carrier.

In August, a teenager in New Jersey gained notoriety for unlocking the iPhone and using it with T-Mobile. But his solution took many hours and involved a soldering iron.

Then in early September, iPhone hackers began to sell software that accomplished the same thing. Some unlocked iPhones sell online for $1,000.

Despite Apple's warning, iPhone customers don't have to accept any updated software from the company. Some hackers say they have ready software-based responses to any attempt by Apple to relock the modified phones.

At a news conference in London last week, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs described the efforts to unlock the iPhone as a "constant cat and mouse game we play," similar to the company's effort to stop hackers from stripping copyright protection from the music it sold on iTunes.

Some Apple observers called the company's warning over unlocked iPhones a soft enforcement approach that stopped short of more serious measures such as lawsuits.

"Apple is in a tricky spot," said Columbia University law professor Tim Wu. "It's in their interest for people to unlock iPhones. It makes the phone more useful. But if Apple is seen encouraging that activity, who would want to do an exclusive deal with them again?"

IPhone unlock kits are selling for $59 at Mostofmymac.com, an online compendium of products and services for Apple business users. A site representative said his firm had sold several hundred iPhone unlocking licenses since Sept. 10.

It has warned customers that Apple will probably void their warranties if it detects that they used the software.

"The question is whether people care," said the man, who would identify himself only as "Mac Thinker" because he said he was unsure whether selling the software was legal. "They want the phone."

Jobs created a furor this month when he cut the price of the iPhone by $200 just two months after launching the product, angering people who had paid full price.

In response to the outcry, the company said it would give $100 in store credit to iPhone customers. Several days later, Apple reported that it had already sold 1 million iPhones and was on track to sell 10 million phones before the end of 2008.

Apple's shares reached a new high Monday, gaining $4.13, or 2.9%, to $148.28. The shares were boosted by a Citi Investment Research report that predicted higher-than-expected sales of Macintosh computers and a surge in iPhone purchases.

New iPhone, lower price: $199

Arriving in early July, the new "iPhone 3G" will sell for hundreds less than the original and—as expected—will come equipped with GPS and access to AT&T's speedy HSDPA network. Also: A new version of Mac OS X is on the way, along with a major revamp of Apple's .Mac online service.

iPhone 3G
It's real, it's thinner (at the edges, at least), and, truth be told ... it looks an awful lot like the original iPhone, from the front anyway. A couple of key changes, however: The headphone jack is now flush with the case—so no more need for a headset adapter—and the back panel is now glossy black plastic, which looks good, but may well be more susceptible to scratches than the original brushed—metal version.

So that's how the new iPhone looks. What's inside? As expected, 3G and GPS, good for turn—by—turn directions and geotagging photos. Nice, but we'd heard rumors of videoconferencing—which, judging from the lack of a front—facing camera on the iPhone 3G, isn't in the cards. Jobs claims five hours of "3G" talk time on the new iPhone (or 10 hours when using EDGE only), plus seven hours of video, 5—6 hours of Web browsing, and 24 hours of audio.

Also, no word on iChat instant messaging for the iPhone; then again, AOL has already announced it's making its own AIM app, and I'm sure plenty of other IM apps will arrive once the App Store launches (more on that in a moment).

And while we're at it—there was no discussion of music or video downloads over AT&T's HSDPA network, reportedly a sticking point between the carrier and Apple.

That said, it turns out the rumors of lower prices were true. A 16GB iPhone 3G will sell for $299, while the 8GB will go for $199. That sounds a lot better than $599 for the original 8GB iPhone. Also: The iPhone in white!

And finally, the release date: July 11. Looks like we've got a little wait on our hands.

iPhone Firmware 2.0
We already knew that the new App Store (which will come stocked with applications built by third—party developers, courtesy of the iPhone SDK),  Exchange support (including over—the—air syncing of e—mail, contacts, and events), and IT—focused security enhancements would come with the latest version of the iPhone firmware, but now we have a few more details on the upcoming iPhone update, along with an estimate of availability: early July.

First, of all: contact search, which will pull up matching contacts the moment you type starting characters. We'll also be getting read—only support for PowerPoint documents, as well as full support for iWork, Apple's Office competitor.

Next up: the ability to move or delete groups of messages, or even save photos attached to e-mails in the iPhone's photo album (no mention of saving images from Web pages).

Rounding out the new Firmware 2.0 features: parental controls (including restrictions on YouTube and the iTunes Store—sorry, kids); a new and improved scientific calculator (just turn the iPhone on its side to get all the new buttons); and support for Chinese, Japanese, and other languages.

Applications
A series of developers demoed at least a dozen games and applications during the keynote. Among the highlights: Sega's previously announced Super Money Ball (now with 110 "stages"), an auction tracker from eBay, GPS—assisted social networking from Loopt (good for seeing if you have buddies nearby), a mobile blogging app (including photos) from TypePad, an AP news tracker complete with videos, and an app from Major League Baseball that'll real—time (or close to it) game highlights.

Games such as Super Monkey Ball will sell for $9.99 when the App Store launches, while the other apps I just mentioned will be free.

Mobile Me
Looks like the leaks about a revamped .Mac were true. As expected, the service—now dubbed Mobile Me—automatically syncs your e-mail, Address Book contacts, iCal events, and photos over the air between iPhones and Macs. Even better, Mobile Me will support Outlook for PC users. Unfortunately, no price drop—we're still talking $99 a year, although there will be a free 60-day trial. Look for Mobile Me to arrive in early July, along with the new iPhone firmware.

Not too impressed. I was expecting to be pissed about owning a generation 1 iPhone after today's announcement but other than the improved headphone jack there's nothing here I'm really fiending for. The Edge network has never been that terrible for me and most places I go have WiFi. The new phone is slightly thicker and I'm not a fan of the new back at all. The $199 price point is nice but that's with the two year contract and they are charging $10 more a month for 3G so it pretty much balances out. Another speech without a "...One More Thing." Apple is still the best thing ever.

Yeah, especially since they've already started patenting technology for upcoming versions, including video chat and solar power.

You can download the developer's kit from the Apple website and make it yourself...as long as you give Apple 30% of your profits...sorry I can't be of any more help than that, but I believe in you.

Make sure you write up a treatment of your idea first and mail it to yourself.  That way if they steal it you have proof that it's yours and can sue.

Anyone else really disappointed in Apple for discontinuing the larger capacity iPods and opting for smaller iPods with less storage capability? My 160gb is almost full and I always just assumed Apple would keep making bigger and bigger iPods. Now it seems they're abandoning the music fans who supported them when the iPod first came out and are not catering only to the casual music fans who only care about the hot singles and only need 16gb of space.

ugh.

I disagree. They target both the hardcore fans and the masses. The hardcore fans want innovative new products. There is probably less than 1% of buyers who are interested in carrying more than 160GB around. Its ridiculous. You dont listen to that constantly, so you can have the music in your computer and sync it constantly whenever you want to change the current 30,000 songs you are listening to.

When the device becomes in majority for video, then it makes sense to have more storage and bigger screens, which is the point of the iTouch anyhow, not the Classic iPod.

I looked into a refurbished previous generation (which I think still would have been capable of HD editing), but it wasn't cheaper than using my student discount on a new one, so...

Why don't you just invest in the 24" iMac? They're fantastic and greatly underrated. For the price you'll be paying for a mac book pro, you'll be getting a machine just as powerful, with a 1g saving.

you might want to get the previous generation anyway if you'd like the firewire 400 ports instead of just the 800.

my june 2004 g5 tower just crashed on monday completely while trying to encode an HD project that i just finished for DVD-- until the new Mac Pros come out in (hopefully january but probably) march i'm stuck using my roommate's old acer laptop. i'm also an editor, and my recent problem has motivated me to do some research that may be able to help you make a decision:

when you say HD, do you mean 720p, 1080i60, HDV, or uncompressed? also, will you want to be running after effects or any other especially RAM hungry applications? the reason that i ask is that with newer operating systems, apps will be able to utilize a lot more than the current 4gb limit... so we'll start to see MBP's with 6gb RAM expansion, etc. also, final cut pro is getting a ground-up redesign right now and who knows what they'll be trying to make realtime for the next version.

if you're used to using an old laptop then any of the new models will be a huge upgrade, but if you can hold out for another few months until things are shipping with Snow Leopard (http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/) in Q1 2009, you might see a promotion or even a chip upgrade although those are unlikely. if nothing else, though, you'd save $129 on the new OS.

check the buyer's guides at www.macrumors.com

edit: if you're doing straight cuts and not too much effects work, you should be fine for editing HD in any of the CODECs above on all recent generations of the MBP. if you're going to be doing much effects work or working with uncompressed HD for your final product, then i'd suggest making an offline copy of your project to get the timing worked out and then exporting an EDL to apply to your HD footage. even working online from the beginning, your new computer will be completely fine if you do as little compositing, etc as possible in high def. there are limits, though. for example, if you plan to be doing online cuts of HD projects much over 15 minutes, you will be running your computer pretty much at its max... count on longer-than-real time rendering and frustratingly long encodes down to SD.  still, everything related to final cut on a new machine has got to be a LOT faster than  on your current laptop

alt/option + P is your best friend if you don't want to work offline and don't necessarily need to see a render in real time.

Apple Announces iTunes Pricing Changes
Songs will now be available at three price points: 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29.

At the Macworld Conference & Expo on Tuesday (January 6), Apple Vice President Philip Schiller revealed iTunes pricing changes and a new MacBook Pro, CNN reports.

Schiller explained that the new iTunes store will have pricing ranks, offering songs at three different price points: 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29. More songs will be sold at the lower price point than at the higher, Schiller said. The pricing shift comes more than a year after Apple almost shut down its iTunes store in protest of a proposed royalty hike that would threaten the store's 99-cent price structure.

On top of several improvements to software offered by Apple — like Learn to Play, which will be a part of the new "Garage Band" — Schiller also announced plans for a 17-inch MacBook Pro notebook. It weighs in at 6.6 pounds and is less than 1-inch thick.

On top of its lightweight design, the notebook can last up to eight hours on a single charge and runs on less power than a light bulb. "This is the best display we've ever shipped in a notebook," Schiller said of the MacBook, which will cost around $2,800 and should arrive in stores later this month.

Schiller filled in for Steve Jobs, who has given the keynote address since 1997. Jobs pulled out of the appearance after word started to spread that he wasn't in the best of health. His absence had many attendees of the conference buzzing about what could be ailing the company's CEO. In 2004, Jobs was treated for pancreatic cancer.

I think the lines will be a lot smaller now.

1) economy
2) lack of huge changes for average iPhone users. the last one featured 3G and it was a big change on the outside/inside, this one not so much.
3) A lot of people who upgraded cannot qualify once again for an upgrade so quickly.

is there some special step I'm missing? Is it only confirmed to work with older phones?

I just picked up the 3G S and xixax is bookmarked but I don't have the icon.

The phone is awesome... Noticeably faster than the 3G. I was split between the 32gb 3g and the 16gb S but decided that speed was more important than space for the extra hundred bucks  considering that 32 still isn't enough space for everything.  What I like most so far is the incredibly responsive typing with auto correction that seems to be eight more often than not. Coming from a razr, this is heaven.

Some Nifty Movie-Related Apps for Your iPhone
Source: Cinematical

I'm sure there are a ton of you who received an iPhone as a gift over the holidays, and I bet you've been busy dancing to ringtones, showing the phone off to your relatives and waving it in the face of those friends who think their Blackberry is, like, the best thing ever. One imagines you've also been scouring the App Store for apps that interest you. The good thing for movie geeks and/or filmmakers is that there are a slew of very cool apps you can download and play around with -- some of which I wasn't even familiar with until The Wrap threw together this nifty list.

They list 10 movie-related apps that range from goofy, geeky things to pass the time (like the "HAL 9000" app that spits out lines from Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey every time you touch the glowing red orb) to useful, on-the-job apps (like the "Artemis Director's Viewfinder", which lets you preview a shot after you enter the format, aspect ratio and type of lens you're using). Some of these apps, like the "Artemis Director's Viewfinder", are already being used by production teams on shows like 30 Rock and Nurse Jackie, while others -- like "Movie Tweets" -- could be used by you to check out the latest Twitter buzz on a film you're thinking about seeing. You can check out the rest of their recommendations over here (http://www.thewrap.com/article/10-hollywood-apps-you-must-have-12286).

A couple apps they didn't include (that you might also want) are "Moviefone" and "IMDB" (self explanatory) and "Run Pee", which offers up tips on when to go to the bathroom during a movie.

That viewfinder app looks awesome. I've always wanted something like that so I could play armchair filmmaker. $29.99 is mad expensive, though. Wish I still had my iPhone jailbroken so I could steal it.

So is it basically a foregone conclusion that apple is going to announce the tablet? How awesome is it going to be and who's getting one?

i just started using quicktime's "save for web" feature, which is awesome for video people. with one mouse click, you can output a movie file each for for streaming to computers, iphones, and iphones with cell connections, and it creates an html page for you with header and body code for you to copy/paste. apple even hosts scripts that detect the device and connection speed, and a version is picked automatically for viewers. if you can host the files in the same place as your page, it's a matter of straight cut/paste. pretty awesome if you don't want to put something you've worked on on youtube.

I've had the iphone for a few years now, to the point where typing on it has become second nature.  Normally the auto-correct feature works flawlessly, picking up on the little moments when your fingers miss the target and figuring out what you're actually trying to write.  Occasionally, though, it suffers from a serious case of whatthefuck.  Case in point, I was writing a text to my girlfriend in which I used the word "might".  I get through "mig" before the little auto-correct balloon pops up and offers what was clearly the most obvious choice for what I was trying to type: "niggardly".  To recap, I typed "mig" and the iphone jumped all over itself to suggest "niggardly".  Iphone, I love you like a cute cousin, but seriously, that was weird.

Are you implying that there was another situation where "niggardly" was necessary to use?  Or did it just come out of nowhere?
Title: Re: Apple is the best thing ever
Post by: polkablues on May 28, 2010, 05:16:31 PM
The phone came up with it out of nowhere. I can envision situations where one would use the word, for example if one were a financial reporter from the 1910s. But for the phone to presume that it was the most likely word that I might have been trying to type is nothing short of bizarre.

I can guarantee that I've never once typed the word niggardly into my phone before today.  Also, that's not what niggardly means, logophobe.

nig·gard·ly
   /ˈnɪgərdli/
–adjective
1.
reluctant to give or spend; stingy; miserly.
2.
meanly or ungenerously small or scanty: a niggardly tip to a waiter.

so, like a niggardly jew. nothing racist at all.

whenever I go to type "now" and end up typing "noe" it ends up capitalizing it "Noe" instead of "now".  Gaspar Noe is the only reason i can think of for this.  but I can't have typed that more than like, once.

sam mendes directed this new iphone commercial

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLrP8rCctgg

the 2min ad is all about the new front camera feature of the iphone4 and what they are calling "face time".

are you kidding me? apple are laughing all the way to the bank with this shit, they know there will be millions of ppl who think this feature is something new and fresh. who is falling for this? i can't believe something that has been around for YEARS AND YEARS - SERIOUSLY I HAVE A NOKIA FROM AT LEAST 5 YEARS AGO THAT HAS THIS FEATURE - is somehow being presented as something NEW and EXCITING.

wow. apple is for idiots who never hear of anything until apple does it. of COURSE it's fresh and new and game changing if the only game you have ever paid attention to is what steve jobs says.

Is Apple really positioning this as a new feature? I don't think most apple freaks think that. What makes it exciting is that video chat will be more ubiquitous and generally more awesome (have you seen that screen?!). I don't know how the video chat feature works on a Nokia, but are you not restricted to use it only with other Nokia video chat users? And how many people do you know who has that same Nokia? I can't imagine enough to use the feature with any regularity..

We could check email and get online with our phones pre-iPhone. But Apple changed the way we do it and made it so seamless that it does in fact feel new, even though it's really not.

Yeah, this isn't the apple thread so I'll keep this brief, but Apple isn't pretending this is something brand new, they're just getting the word out that this is available on the new phone.  The new phone is a brilliantly designed upgrade to something Apple has already done best.

Also, double camera so you can switch from your face and the thing you point with your phone without turning it... I don't know, sounds simple and silly, but huge step forward towards "Back to the Future 2" video calls.

Yeah, this isn't the apple thread so I'll keep this brief,

moved it now so feel free to elaborate.

firstly i don't disagree that the new phone is a massive upgrade on the old one,. what bothers me about apple and its fanboys (and i should've known there'd be heaps here) is that with every single product they've made their only real claim to success is that they have made everyone think they are the bees knees of technology.

cbrad's questions here pretty much prove my point:

Quote from: ©brad on June 09, 2010, 10:10:13 AM

no you are not restricted to use it only with other nokia phones. no they do not have to have the same kind of phone. in fact the video calling feature has been common here for many years. not only nokia (many of their models have double cameras) but also my current Samsung S7350 from 3 years ago has a front facing camera capable of video calls. my old phone that i lost a year ago, which was also a couple of years old at the time, the LG Viewty, had a front facing camera. AND THEY CAN ALL CALL EACH OTHER ON VIDEO.

the amazing thing with all these phones, or rather amazing only if apple did it i guess, is that you can make video calls OVER 3G. you don't have to find a wifi connection in order to talk to someone, which is basically just giving you a webcam. it's much more futurisitic to be able to use a video phone over the existing telephone networks and not hav to find a wifi hotspot like some kind of CAVEMAN using a payphone.

telecommunications technology is one of the most misunderstood things the average consumer has to deal with every day. i think the problem is that in america you hav a really, REALLY, bad system where every carrier is operating on a different band with massive gaps in 3G coverage nationwide and massive strain on existing networks in big cities. for this reason i dont' think it's entirely your fault as an american consumer that you hav never really got to use video calls before or even heard much about them. it's my understanding that most carriers discourage this for the amount of bandwidth it uses even with existing 3G networks.

if you don't know what 3G refers to, that's another thing. but here's where 4G supposedly comes in. the new HTC Evo is a far superior phone to the iphone, for many reasons i won't bore you with. but it is just another example of what really bothers me about apple, and what has been bugging me since this thread started.. where i said, regarding the latest ipod at the time..

Quote from: P on October 13, 2005, 01:48:47 AM
it's not like it's the first device ever to play video and mp3s and all that. it'll be the highest selling, coolest looking, and whatever, but they are hardly the first to make porn portable.

it doesn't seem to matter that apple charge you more for a product that has essentially been on the market for years. i suppose if you can easily afford it, then that line of argument is moot. but it's not just that they are raping ppl's wallets, what bothers me is the idea that somehow they are at the forefront of anything other than profits. and that too is a fallacy, as nokia are the leading manufacturer wordlwide. the problem to me is the kind of mentality they hav created. apple fans are to technology what family guy fans are to TV, they know absolutely nothing about it. ppl think that apple are the benchmark of modern technology or of what the "future" is, like pas said above, and what's infuriating about that is it's complete FOOLISHNESS. you are actually living MANY years behind the real state of the art. and if an apple fan were to somehow realise that, then about 90% of the appeal of the brand would instantly evaporate.. "what.. i'm NOT the coolest kid just like everyone else i know?"

and that's the problem. being cool has nothing to do with being smart or being right. it's to do with what everyone else is doing. it creates a cult like mentality that is impossible to break through. look at the cognitive dissonance following my post.. "but SURELY nokia is exactly like iphone and they have only like ONE phone that does this.. cos apple only has one phone that does this so it can't be THAT prevalent.." . and when someone like me offers alternatives, they are considered something between blasphemous troublemakers and party poopers.. it's almost too much to believe. i guarantee you some ppl will have trouble believing that nokia, samsung, LG, and other brands have had video call capabilities since years ago.

apple knows that they have always made their money out of ppl's ignorance. this is exactly the reasoning behind the ipad for example. who needs this if they hav a laptop? also there have been tablets around for years, but the flaw of the other companies is that they dont' hav a CULT like following that will buy everything they spew out. the ipad is also probably apple's most user friendly product, it's for babies, i mean literally for babies.. it is a way to penetrate the market at a really young age so to begin indoctrinating toddlers to use only apple products.. no one with proper tactile use of their limbs will use the ipad as anything more than a TOY.

well anyway. thanks for reading this if you did, sorry if i offended this precious brand too much. i'll go back to 2010 now..

You sold me. I'm getting the iPhone 4.

Question - can I keep my exisiting unlimited data plan if I get the new one and will it extend or will I only have it for the remaining life of my existing contract? I never considered myself a bandwidth hog and I thought that I was just using the iPhone the same way anyone would, but it turns out i use 4gbs a month and that's double the 2gb the new tiered plan offers.
Title: Re: Apple is the best thing ever

P, I'm sad to read that.  You are usually a smarter guy than that.
Blind Apple hatred is just as bad as the blind Apple support (or blind PC following).  Idiots follow everything and assuming everyone that follows any one thing are all like these idiots is just ignorant.
So is saying that the HTC Evo is definitively a better phone.  It may be better for some, but it's still a matter of preference (I could give a shit about open source, the iPhone has a much better touch response, and I'm already used to the more-intuitive Apple UI).

Apple doesn't pretend to be bleeding edge, bringing everyone new inventions.  They are all about design.  And they are the best at it in most cases.

Everything is designed on the way people think and live and Apple is about bringing them what they want in the best way they can (obviously it's about profit, but what giant company isn't?  At least Apple has a voice)

I don't have an iPad.  I just can't afford the luxury, but some people can.  If you look at it, it's perfectly made for lounging.  That's how it's angled and it doesn't pretend to be the replacement for laptops.  If it were, they would be more expensive and they would get rid of their far superior line of actual laptops.  It's a very casual device, perfect for reading or watching movies in bed or on an airplane, taking a few notes when you need to.
It's not meant for big business meetings or heavy design work.  --- that said, I have no real desire for one at all.

And what's the problem with Ease-of-use?  Are you mad that you had to learn how to use computers the hard way?  That's an old-man complaint.

And you know what?  Apple products LOOK COOL.  There is nothing wrong with design.  Look at what they put into their design and the pride they take in making everything useful and functional.
I hate when people bitch about Apple caring to make their products so attractive.  It seems like a bitter reaction.

I'm still lost on this one.  I've heard conflicting information.  Supposedly, current ATT customers will be allowed to keep an unlimited plan.  It's only if you change your plan or if you're a new customer.
I have my doubts about that though.

ok, that baffles me, it's fine if ppl are in love with apple, but, standing in line for hours when you can easily walk by the store a few days later and buy one?? or worse, if ppl are so in love of the latest technology, why don't you order it on-line and save a bunch of time??

the only good reasons I can think are that the upgrade to the current i-phone is a game changer, and so ppl must have it now, that's fine, the other, that it'll be sold out and not available for months to come, but is like that? or do they not produce enough i-phones?

Sounds like they might have rushed it out a little too soon.  Problems people are reporting range from weird yellow streaks on the display to reception dropping out when you hold the phone by the edges (because the outer rim of the phone is the actual antenna).  I wasn't going to get one right away anyway, I mean I've only had my 3GS for a year at this point, and hopefully they can get the kinks worked out for the next few batches.

I had a 3g so I waited in line for 4 hours this morning to get the 4 because I'm an idiot*.

*So last week when they put the phone on presale I, like many others, tried all day to preorder from the website.  No luck, too much traffic, no one getting through.  So on my lunch break I stopped by the Apple Store to say "hey, can I preorder a phone" and was told I could download the new Apple Store app on my current phone and try my luck there.  So in the store, I downloaded the app and it would only let you reserve a phone in the store, as opposed to letting you purchase one.  I was like "okay".  That night around 8 or so, you could FINALLY get through on the website to order the phone so I went online.  Got about halfway through the process and realized that they will only ship the phone to your billing address, which is my apartment, whose mailbox will not fit the phone, I don't have a doorman, hence it would be returned to the post office for pickup.  Since I couldn't get it delivered to my office, I decided that it would be easier to just swing by the Apple Store and pick mine up instead of waiting all the way until THE NEXT DAY at the post office (because it would be closed by the time I got off work).  So yesterday during lunch I swung by the Apple Store again, to say "hey so what's the deal going to be tomorrow".  I was told to get there "as early as I could" and that "people were already lining up at the 5th Ave store".  It was probably 3pm.  I then realized what a fucking idiot I was in thinking that things had changed since 2 years ago when I waited FOUR HOURS IN LINE FOR THE PHONE.  The ONLY reason I did this at the time is because it was the only way to get the phone.  You couldn't order it online.  I had naively assumed that since you could now just ORDER THE PHONE ONLINE that no other fucking idiot would actually line up at the store and wait HOURS for their phone now.  But I was so very very wrong.  And I was now one of those idiots.  To put an even bigger FUCK YOU on top of the whole thing, for those that ordered their phones (when I had the chance to), they shipped A DAY EARLY.  So not ONLY WAS I (and HUNDREDS OF OTHERS) going to be waiting outside in 90 degree heat at 7 in the FUCKING MORNING for this stupid phone, but BUT BUT everyone else already got their phones YESTERDAY!  Making the whole exercise completely pointless.  I don't know why I did this.  The phone is cool though.**

**Except for the phone part, but we already knew that.

I never had 3GS so I don't know. But I can tell you this thing is waaay faster than my 3G. Actually, that email response seems totally accurate.

I've been messing around with my co-worker's new iPhone.  The only way the reception is affected is if you wrap your hand around the ENTIRE phone.  Who the fuck holds the phone like that?  You use like two fingers and a thumb... that doesn't affect reception.

If you hold a lot of phones like a mental patient, the reception will drop.

That said, if some phones are actually affected by holding it like a normal person, then shame on Apple.

I'm still waiting for 4G because I'm no dummy.

For my 3G, at first it was draining my battery like crazy!  As in, I'd go to bed with it fully charged, and by the morning it'd be at 70 percent, just on standby mode.  I rebooted it and it was fine.  Now the battery lasts a little longer then it did before the update.  Some things run a little slower, but a few things run much faster.  My Facebook app barely worked before the update, crashing all the time and taking forever to make a comment on something.  Now it works like it's supposed to.

All in all, as of right now, it hasn't made too big of a difference for me.  I'm happy for the slightly longer battery life and the working Facebook app.

If you're having problems, try restarting it or restoring it.

I've got a 3GS and at first I was blown away by how fast things were after the update, but Safari has started to lag and overall I can feel the phone going in that direction as well. Still love having folders and the display seems much more bright and crisp since the update, and the camera is much faster now, too. Before the update, it would take something like 5 seconds for the shutter animation to finish and sometimes it wouldn't even take the picture. Glad to have that fixed.

Apple, AT&T Hit With Class-Action Lawsuit (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/01/apple-att-class-action-la_n_631993.html)

Apple's new iPhone 4 has a front-facing camera, multitasking, and what appears to be an big antenna problem.

Numerous iPhone 4 users have reported that holding the phone in a certain way--specifically, so that bare skin touches the phone's antenna--can interrupt the phone's signal and cause reception headaches.

Although Steve Jobs has told consumers, via email, that "there are no reception issues," Apple and AT&T have been hit with a class-action lawsuit over the iPhone 4's antenna.

According to Gizmodo, which has a copy of the official complaint, the lawsuit accuses the two companies of the following:

• General Negligence (APPLE and AT&T)
• Defect in Design, Manufacture, and Assembly (APPLE)
• Breach of Express Warranty (APPLE)
• Breach of Implied Warranty for Merchantability (APPLE and AT&T)
• Breach of Implied Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose (APPLE and AT&T)
• Deceptive Trade Practices (APPLE and AT&T)
• Intentional Misrepresentation (APPLE and AT&T)
• Negligent Misrepresentation (APPLE and AT&T)
• Fraud by Concealment (APPLE and AT&T)

Handling any phone's antenna while it is in use can affect signal strength, but what differentiates the iPhone 4 is that its antenna is part of the structure of the phone, making it difficult to handle the phone without touching its antenna.

"It's got integrated antennas right in the structure of the phone--it's never been done before and it's really cool engineering," Steve Jobs said at the unveiling of the iPhone 4. "This is some brilliant engineering -- we use that stainless steel band as part of the antenna system." Using a rubber "bumper" case for the iPhone can reportedly resolve the antenna issues.

As ReadWriteWeb points out, a leaked copy of an internal Apple memo instructing employees on how to handle iPhone 4 reception complaints could be damning. "Within its instructions are tips about how to hold the device to avoid touching the antenna and the suggestion to use a case or bumper made of rubber or plastic," ReadWriteWeb writes.

Moreover, Apple has recently indicated that is hiring antenna engineers.

Letter from Apple Regarding iPhone 4

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple's history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T's recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone's bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4's wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

Thank you for your patience and support.

I've heard a lot of people say (and it makes sense) that Apple is so used to everyone loving everything they do, they just don't know how to admit they fucked something up.  No setting for "apologize".

Hayao Miyazaki Compares iPad Use To Masturbation (http://kotaku.com/5584759/hayao-miyazaki-compares-ipad-use-to-masturbation)
via: Kotaku

Hayao Miyazaki is the greatest animator alive. And he does not like the iPad.

Noted for Studio Ghibli classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Miyazaki has stated that he rarely watches TV, does not own a computer or a fax and doesn't even own a DVD player. Instead of e-mail, he writes letters. He also makes wonderful films.

In an interview in the July issue of "Neppuu", the Studio Ghibli published pamphlet, the famed animator does not pull any punches when discussing the iPad, or what he calls the "game machine-type thing" that people are "stroking with strange gestures".

"For me, there is no feeling of admiration or no excitement whatsoever," Miyazaki said about the iPad. "It's disgusting. On trains, the number of those people doing that strange masturbation-like gesture is multiplying."

Miyazaki also noted that he also got "fed up" when everyone on the trains started reading manga and then later when everyone began using cell phones on the trains to presumably send text messages.

He might seem like an eccentric technophobe, but he is coming from an "All I need are pencil and paper" point-of-view. That might be all he needs. He's Hayao Miyazaki! And with those simple tools, he can create brilliance. Not everyone is talented as Miyazaki. Later in the article, however, he encourages people to become creators, and not simply consumers. With all today's information overload, it is easy for people to lose sight of what they need to focus on to advance society.

Yes, I agree.  I love the transitions between panels.  Additionally, normally when you read a comic book you have the entire two pages spoiled for you out of the corners of your eyes but reading it 1 panel at a time you actually experience it completely linearly without any clue as to what the next panel will bring.

They should market the iPad as one big spoiler warning. Good feature.
Title: Re: Apple is the best thing ever
Post by: pete on July 28, 2010, 12:31:41 AM
but a comicbook isn't a storyboard; how the panels play out on a page against each other and how a page is composed, the layout dictates the rhythm of a story, and a good comicbook oughta be read that way.

No, Pete's right.  A good comic artist/writer knows that things can get spoiled by things showing up out of the corner of you're eye.  It's carefully planned out so that things are revealed at page turns.  The way the panels fit together are a big part of the comic.

Okay, so I need some helpful advice from those of you more technically advanced than me. I need a new phone. Seriously, I've had the same phone for nearly 4 years and it was outdated then. I need to upgrade. I would love an iphone and I keep going back and fore, debating. If I was going to get an iphone then naturally I'd wait until summer and get the iPhone 5 when it's released. The only thing which is putting me off is the insane price plans I'd be forced to carry with either AT&T or Verizon. My wife and I are on a family plan and assuming we both got an iPhone it'd cost us like $160/month - and that's on the lowest (unfeasible) number of minutes and without any text messaging plan.

So I've been looking into other options. So far Virgin mobile is proving by far the most seductive. For $40/month each we could get a great package: 1200 minutes each, plus unlimited text, email, data and web. Now, Virgin is a new player in the US so there coverage is spottier than the big boy, but it doesn't look like isn't going to be an issue. They don't have a wide selection of phones, but a couple seem pretty decent:
http://www.virginmobileusa.com/cell-phone-plans/beyond-talk-plans.jsp?intcmp=p-hp-mps2-25planfortune-0308111

So basically, I'm asking for advice. Is an iPhone really worth it? As far I can tell the biggest difference between the iPhone and other smartphones is that I can use the iPhone as an iPod substitute on the go whereas other phones wouldn't play iTunes format of music? And I guess all the iPhone Apps won't work on any other brand of phones either?

So assuming I'm still leaning towards the Virgin option - how do those phones stack up? Although I've got a shitty phone right now, and want to makes sure that when I get a new one it's the shit. That's why I've been hanging on for so long and why I was contemplating waiting till the summer for the new iPhone. Anyone know anything about these phones available or does anyone use the Virgin network at all?

Really appreciate any advice anyone can give. I'm completely lost when it comes to cell phones.

Whether you get an iPhone or an Android phone or whatever, get a smartphone with a data package. I personally have had iPhones for the past four years, and I have nothing but positive remarks about them, but either way, having access to a tiny little Internet-connected computer in your pocket at any given moment is the breakthrough of the 21st century. You'll never want to go back.

I've only ever had an iPhone (smartphone) so I can't really compare to Android or any other brand. But from what I've heard from people who have used both is that it is the best, but it's not going to do anything radically different than any other smartphone.

dude i pay 50 bucks a month with 6 gig data (more than enough per month unless you're the lawnmower man), evenings starting at 5 and 400 anytime mins.  this is in toronto but 160/month is fucking retarded.

best thing to do is lie about being offered a corporate plan from a different provider and get your current provider to try and beat/match them. with a little bit of research you can convince anyone of anything (that's how i did it)

I pay $100 a month for my iPhone. Just for me. I have unlimited data which for me is a must. Between Netflix and NBA League Pass, I use up a lot of data. I'll stick with whoever has unlimited data plans.

I've played with the Droid X and it's really neat, but iPhone just feels better and can do more.

I hope so. I check mac rumors sometimes and they were saying there may not be a new iPhone until 2012.

QuoteIn what would likely be a major surprise to many Apple followers, The Loop's Jim Dalrymple reports that Apple is not planning to introduce any new hardware at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, scheduled for June 6th through 10th. The conference has been consistently used to introduce new iPhone hardware over the last several years, with the company occasionally introducing other hardware as well.

Apple closed the door this morning on any speculation that it would announce new hardware at its Worldwide Developers conference saying it would focus on iOS and Mac OS.

Apple's apparent focus on software in its WWDC announcement backs up what my own sources are saying about the annual conference. That is, expect a software show in 2011, not a hardware event.
While a focus on software is not unusual for Apple's WWDC promotional materials given its primary positioning as an event for developers, Dalrymple notes that the 2011 materials do nothing to contradict what he has already been hearing from sources: namely, no new hardware this year.

It is also important to note that Dalrymple has not specifically claimed that new iPhone hardware won't be introduced in the same general timeframe as WWDC, merely claiming that any introduction won't occur at the event itself.

One analyst report from late last month indicated that a September launch for the fifth-generation iPhone seemed to be the likely scenario. Those rumors were turned into claims of "delays" that were refuted by Dalrymple himself and other sources. The difference may have been in semantics, however, as Dalrymple simply noted at the time that Apple had not deviated from its own internal release schedule plans, but whether those plans called for a typical June release or something more in line with the September rumors or even something else entirely was unknown.

Update: Japanese blog Macotakara reports that the fifth-generation iPhone will "probably" not ship until 2012 based on the current status of part production.

According to Chinese source, iPhone 5 will not probablly be shipped during 2011 because the parts manufacturing for iPhone 5 are not started.
The site had previously offered relatively accurate information about the iPad 2. The site also reported earlier this month that the fifth-generation iPhone will adopt an aluminum back and a redesigned antenna.

Update 2: Macotakara has clarified its original report to note that the fifth-generation iPhone is apparently not set to ship before the end of Apple's fiscal 2011, which occurs in late September 2011.

Update 3: All Things Digital and Engadget are hearing similar claims that there will be no fifth-generation iPhone introduction at WWDC 2011.

My wife upgraded to the 5. When you first hold it, it definitely feels insubstantial compared to the 4/4S, but once you realize it's not going to snap in half, the lighter weight makes it so much easier to use for long periods of time. Other than aesthetics, I haven't noticed much of a difference from the last generation, except that web browsing is notably faster, both on wifi and 4G.

All right guys, on Friday I'm going to be pre-ordering one of the new iPhones, because I've had my old one for three years now, and that's just sort of what you do nowadays. But I'm torn between the slightly bigger 6, and the great big fuck-off gigantic 6+. On the one hand, movies and games and shit on an enormous, beautiful screen I carry around in my pants. On the other hand, I have to carry this thing around in my fucking pants. I clearly want the big one, but I'm afraid of the unknown. Also, I always make fun of people with humongous cell phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note (which this new iPhone is actually taller than). Also also, I'm a hypocrite, rendering that last point irrelevant.

I do not want the Apple Watch. It is dumb.

I can't abide by the larger sizes. I guess I'll go try holding the six at the store, because the technology it houses is nice and maybe I could get used to it. But I can't stand the idea of something bigger than what I have. I wish they'd continue to upgrade the 5s size so those of us who like things compact don't feel left out.

The watch is cool but not so cool that it would make me want to actually wear a watch.

U2, Apple and rock-and-roll as dystopian junk mail
By Chris Richards, Washington Post 10/9/14

On Tuesday afternoon, U2's new album was just there, waiting for you. Like an Ikea catalogue. Or a jury summons. Or streptococcus. The latest inescapable unpleasantry for anyone who's chosen to participate in our great digital society — more specifically, the 500 million human beings on this planet who use iTunes.

First, to premiere its new single, "The Miracle (of Joey Ramone)," the band chose to play it live at Apple's latest product-launch ceremony in Cupertino, Calif. "Wasn't that the most incredible single you ever heard?" Apple CEO Tim Cook asked the audience when it was over. "We would love a whole album of that."

Presumably from a script, Bono replied, "The question is now, how do we get it to as many people as possible? Because that's what our band is all about."

Voila. Apple instantly inserted U2's new album into the "purchased" folders of half a billion iTunes users, triumphantly calling it the largest album release in history. (The album is being given away for free, but speculators are speculating that Apple has paid U2 up to $30 million for the honor.)

As for the album itself, it's called "Songs of Innocence," perhaps to suggest that U2 is abandoning a swaddled orphan on your doorstep, not an intrusive cluster of idea-starved rock songs. Yeah, okay, this might be the largest album release in history. It's also rock-and-roll as dystopian junk mail.

And that's why this stunt feels more alarming than the starry, out-of-thin-air album releases that preceded it.

In 2011, when Radiohead dropped "King of Limbs" without warning, it felt like a genuine surprise. Later that year, Jay Z and Kanye West released their unexpected duet album, "Watch the Throne," with similar gusto. But when Jay Z tried it again with 2013's "Magna Carta... Holy Grail," the method was starting to feel boring (and creepy, considering the album was released by Samsung as an app that would collect customer data). Pardons were granted when Beyoncé dropped her latest from the heavens last December — it felt spontaneous, a word rarely used to describe Beyoncé .

In this brave new farrago of medium and message, U2 seem to have transmitted all of rock-and-roll's misguided egotism into one ridiculous statement: Our music is technically worthless and everyone in the world should hear it. That's what this band is "all about," and Apple is happy to do its part, making you the owner of these songs without asking your permission. Which is disgusting.

So as you delete "Songs of Innocence" from your memory — as you should, without hesitation — remember the fleeting heebie-jeebies as they crawl around your follicles.

That utopian philanthrocapitalist democracy that Bono is always stumping for will also be a place where your belongings will be chosen for you.

I'm absolutely going to buy this, hating myself the whole time.

I like to stay 1-2 generations behind on iPhones, but I will have this eventually.

So from what I understand, someone could grab your iPhone, point it at your face to unlock it, and run away with it, right?

But then that someone could only use the iPhone until it locks itself again. He should take the severed head with him everywhere he goes. Or it doesn't work if the phone senses that the head is dead? Damn. They're clever at Apple.

My 6 is dead because the battery doesn't work anymore. I have to go to the Apple Store. I hate the Apple Store. But I am very happy with an iPhone 6. I'll go with it until it refuses to function.

My 6+ is feeling the cold withering hand of obsolescence slowly creeping over it. Battery life is going south, there's a lot of lag switching between apps, I have apps crash on me a lot more frequently than I used to. Also I've just had it for a while now and I need new shit. I am an American and I demand constant iteration.

I'm not blown away by the Face ID stuff -- it feels like a wildly overcomplicated answer to a really simple question -- but I'm sure I would get used to it quickly enough. I'm mostly excited about the idea of having a bigger screen on a smaller overall phone. And that OLED screen looks positively lush. Also, optical zoom and image stabilization on the camera is pretty sweet.

I have the 6 and am quite happy staying for now. I really don't use it to its full potential anyway, although a camera upgrade would be nice. Excited for OS11 though, mostly for the new "do not disturb when driving" mode, which is something I've been wanting for a while.

I don't upgrade my phone, that's why it doesn't lag. I mean, before the 6, I was with an iPhone 3. I still feel like I am in the future.
