I thought it was a joke at first, but the "About Schmidt" DVD comes with a Child Reach envelope so you can "Meet The Real Ndugu!"

Maybe that can save us all from our late-age middle-class white American torpor...

I sound facetious there, but I actually thought it was pretty brave to sort of subtly criticize the too-much-leisure-and-too-many-resources ennui of the American middle class with little Ndugu, at the same time making it all so funny. The ending didn't seem sentimental to me; it was like a perspective-giver. He was only a "failure" by his own faulty standards. I really liked that. I thought it was optimistic, because he didn't have to go on feeling like a failure and wallowing; he'd already done something worthwhile.

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

Yeah, I felt cheated that I didn't get it in mine, especially with the lack of special features. I think Bob owes me big time. I'm sending a complaint to his office.

When I moved back home from film school, my mom said to me (with a proud smile on her face) "look, Sean, we adopted one of those Brazilian orphans...", and handed me this pat little picture, explaining that you send $5 a month, or whatever it was, and the little guy gets to eat, or read, or something. My response was: "when he comes of age, do we ship him over here to work on the plantation?" She wasn't very amused.
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

Seriously, though... I don't think most people who participate in these things expect anything in return. Schmidt just got lucky.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but last night on my buying spree, my buddy picked it up, and he was telling me about the whole Ndugu thing. Sounded pretty funny.

Everytime I think of kids like that, I have two images married in my mind: the episode when Starvin Marvin goes to Marklar (where everything is Marklar) on South Park, and the Phil Hartman "Bill Clinton explains Warlords to people in McDonalds" skit from SNL.

It's actually very funny and simultaneously very moving, which is part of what makes the movie so unique. I didn't find it sappy at all; any sentiment in the end is well earned, in my opinion. It's not a rose-colored thing at all.

You must see it ASAP, especially if you enjoy Payne's other films.
