Their third record Twin Cinema will be released in stores August 23.  Matador Records (http://www.matadorrecords.com/store/storesearch.php?artist=The+New+Pornographers) has a pre-sale going on so you get a free 7".  The disc is $10 (Cheap!) plus 3 for shipping so I suggest any of you who like this band and want to purchase it go over there.

The new album is far better then the two previous. It's not as cacthy as 'the electric version' but maybe that's the strenght - it lasts longer.

My head is bursting from the musical extravaganza that is occurring inside me.  This album is everything I could ever want from them, and more.  They really have created something special here.  can't wait to see it live.

No matter how immune you consider yourself to snappy pop hooks, grandiose supergroup pileups, or giddy, sing-along choruses, denying the smarts of The New Pornographers is almost impossible.

yes, the rumors are true!  i have a new FAVORITE ALBUM OF THE YEAR.  i've had this for a few months and have probably heard it over 100 times.  i cannot stop listening to it, and you all must hear it.  admittedly, this album is not going to change the world.  this is not okcomputer, but this is the goddamn catchiest thing you're bound to hear all year and you will listen to it a thousand times.  it refuses to get old.

Pitchfork: 9.0
Rolling Stone: 4 Stars
Entertainment Weekly: A
Spin: A-

Shaftr, this is for you.  you KNOW in your heart that weezer sucks now but you have no alternatives, NOW you do.  you will put weezer safely in a shoebox where it belongs when you realize that power pop can have emotion AND be smart!  (And you twitch in your seat /'Cause you wanna hit the street / When you're on drugs)

or steal the album yourself:

why is everybody talking about the new pornographers like they are new? why was nobody going apeshit when the electric version came out?

i was! I just feel like they should be on top of the world right now--way ahead of death cab and the killers anyway. A lot of people in the indie world still don't know about them.  I just think they are light years ahead musically, and should be appreciated now instead of far from now.

No one here is claiming that they're new or that they've just now heard of them.  I was gonna post about the pre-order offer and realized there was no thread which means you never went apeshit over EV here either.

did i ever say i was talking about xixax? it was a direct response to modage's post, where he posted links to various reviews praising the album. in my opinion, their album the electric version is as good as the new one, and should have gotten this amount of praise as well

and before you go and try to post a link to a pitchfork review of their last album, i know they got good reviews, but nothing like the stuff they are getting now

Fair enough.  I still haven't heard this one since it hasn't been sent yet.  I think sometimes bands like this benefit from the slow build of word of mouth and now that people have been talking about their great previous efforts, their newest record is just gonna be given high marks.  And don't worry, I would never post anything off of Pitchfork here.

i picked up twin cinema earlier today, on my lunch break -- my intro to the band. have listened to the first half twice so far. first listen felt lukewarm towards it. grew tremendously on second listen, once melodies were familiar. i expect to be able to get into it a fair amount. i've always had an affinity for jangly pop stuff like this.

also, anybody in the l.a. area can see them for free tomorrow, 7pm, at tower on sunset. be there!

yeah, i found out you have to buy the album to get a wristband, which allows you to see them, i think.  I don't mind buying the album a second time, since I get to seem and all, and they're a lot of fun live.  You can get the album signed, so thats pretty cool.

yeah i'm not sure, but you're right about that.  my cousin burned me a copy of Electric Version 2 christmas's ago and i had never even heard of them before.  and i subscribe to the same magazines now as i did then, so they definitely werent getting the attention they're getting now.  (they had the front page review in spin with a fullpage illustration?!)  but whatever the reason, it's good that they're getting some attention though i agree that Electric Version is probably as good as this new album.  but this one is new, so i guess i'm talking about them cause the thread had like 3 responses in it and i wanted to see if i could turn a few people around here onto them since it probably is my favorite cd now this year.  now i'm eagerly awaiting the results...

more praise:

Rolling Stone: 4 Stars

"Everytime the New Pornographers put out a record, it's like discovering a greatest hits album from some lost early seventies AM-radio group that was too good to really exist."

GQ
"Twin Cinema, the bands third and best album is not jaded, complicated, or precious.  It is pure joyous pop from beginning to end, a perfect midsummer record that you'll be singing along with instantaneously."

Paste: 4 Stars
"Twin Cinema is compulsively playable, a cohesive collection of razor sharp pop bliss."

Paper
"The Bleeding Heart Show makes clear the New Pornographers have gone somewhere deeper than they ever dared to travel on their earlier albums.  It's a place that has colors in the darker end of the spectrum, distinct flavors galore and a vibrant sound that will have their fans knocking down the doors to get in."

Giant: A+

"Over the course of two albums, the Vancouver-based group has shown its penchant for layering keys, guitars, horns, drums and vocals into exquisite power pop choruses- the kind that remind you how ridiculously giddy great music can make you feel."

I just test drove Twin Cinema and it's my least favorite of the three.  Not saying it's bad, it's a good album but it does not stack up to where they've set the bar.

I'll be seeing them tomorrow despite the absense of Neko and Dan, both of whom steal the show throughout the three albums.

Meh.

wow, for me, its their most interesting record to date.  I absolutely adore Mass Romantic--like I'd kill for that record.  I like EV a lot too, but that one doesn't have the same oomph as the other two have for me.

that sucks, because i'm pretty sure they're supposed to be on for the whole tour.  i read somewhere that AC said he was psyched cause it would be the first time in forever everyone would be there for the tour and that would explain letting Destroyer open a bunch of the dates.

Yes, yes, I know.  Haha, oh well.  No one will ever listen to me again ... or for the first time as it were.  It's not like I don't like it, let's get that straight.  "The Bleeding Heart Show" honestly may be my fav NP song ever.  There are a lot of bright spots on the album, and a lot of room to yes, grow on me, but I just had to rate it as my least favorite.  Kinda like if I had to name my least favorite Stooges record it'd be the first one even though I love that record, it just happens to be rated lower than Fun House and Raw Power.  It doesn't mean I don't like it.

And I didn't even get the 7" for fuck's sake, they must have been out which astounds me.

Funny sig, mod.

Anyway, I'll bring back a report later today/tomorrow of the live performance of the Some Pornographers.

Neko Case--and Dan Bejar even--will be on the official tour.  the past week was just a professional thing. Go here and you can watch the KCRW  Morning Becomes Eclectic performance and see the newest member, Kathryn, who's been singing all of Neko's parts while she's been gone.

I'm very excited for the real tour now!

Yes, this was just an in-store (technically an out-store) today.  Neko's absense was not missed since like that guy said, the new keyboardist, AC's niece apparently, took over the female vocals and did a great job.

Twin Cinema
Use It
The Laws Have Changed
The Bleeding Heart Show
Slow Descent Into Alcoholism
Sing Me Spanish Techno

The Candians were dying in the heat but pulled it off pretty well.  I'll try to see their proper show when they come back around next month.
Title: New Pornographers
Post by: modage on September 15, 2005, 09:36:38 PM
just saw New Pornographers for the first time.  it was SWEET.  no Neko, but a surprise Bejar* (including mini-Destroyer set) was awesome.  songs played were

10 from Twin Cinema - Twin Cinema, Bones of An Idol, Use It, The Bleeding Heart Show, Jackie Dressed In Cobras*, Sing Me Spanish Techno, Three Or Four, Star Bodies, Streets Of Fire*, Stacked Crooked

3 from Electric Version - The Laws Have Changed, All For Swinging You Around, It's Only Divine Right

5 from Mass Romantic - Mass Romantic, Fake Headlines, Slow Decent Into Alcoholsim, Jackie*, Breakin' The Law*

plus a spot-on Cars cover of My Best Friends Girl sung by the drummer and a guest-Trumpeter on Stacked Crooked (which was probably the best thing they did live).

its funny that all bands seemed to have a 'bastard' album.  was it coincidence or why did they draw more from their first album than the 2nd?  many bands do this.  its puzzling.

seeing them live though, i can sort of see why they're not a bigger band.  i'm not sure if it was because they played so early (7:00) or what, but it seemed to take them a few songs to warm up.  but when they were going they sounded great.

it's funny though when people talk about grunge as being a movement where the guys in the band looked like normal people.  i dont think so.  look at kurt cobain, it was grungeglam but it was still glam.  he looked like the rock star of that era, and it was cool.  new pornographers are not cool, they're just dudes (and chicks) that write great songs but they're kind of dorks.  not neccesarily very attractive.  kind of like wilco before they had all the YHF cred.  and i sort of like that.    in the past week i've seen a few bands (Sahara Hotnights, who really rock live and Dandy Warhols, who don't) who even though they're small bands they have the rock posturing down and the stage presence.  during the new p's set they realized that at one point they had 40 minutes left but only 2 songs left on the setlist.  it really seemed to bewilder them even though they have 3 albums to pull songs from as to what they would play next.  it's probably only a matter of time before their stage presence catches up with their songwriting ambition.  but for now it's nice to see a band as unpretentious as this play and have a good time.

Post by: ABKman18 on September 16, 2005, 12:28:12 PM
wow, they usually have a huge stage presence. One of the best bands I've seen live before.  I'm very surprised Neko didn't show up.  I thought she was going to be on the main tour; well, I'm hoping she'll be on the rest of the tour at least.  She better be at my date, or I'm gonna hurt someone.  well, glad to hear about the set.  I think they played more from MR than EV due to MR just being a more rocking album and just a lot more playful.  For me, it's a lot more fun to sing along to.  That's awesome they played such a long set--they rock my world.

yeah, maybe it was just the early show time that made things a little weird.  the show was 'sold out' but it was never packed.  maybe they set aside more cmj spots than people showed up.  probably didn't help that they were competing with the Arcade Fire (with not-so-surprise guest Bowie) in Central Park.  in retrospect i should've gone to that show instead too!  i wouldnt worry about neko, this cmj thing is seperate from their actual tour so she should be there in the future.

wow!  i saw them again yesterday and it was 180 degrees different from that first show!  totally day and night.  not that they had rock posturing down or anything but the overall sound and performance/show was just BIGGER.   and with neko there it completely changed their sound (improved 1000x).  all in all, it was awesome.

even longer set this time (22 songs!).  they played...

5 from Mass Romantic: Mass Romantic, The Fake Headlines, My Slow Descent Into Alcoholism, Jackie, Letter From An Occupant

7(!) from Electric Version: The Electric Version, The Laws Have Changed, The End Of Medicine, All For Swinging You Around, It's Only Divine Right, Ballad Of A Comeback Kid, Miss Teen Wordpower

8 from Twin Cinema: Twin Cinema, Bones Of An Idol, Use It, Bleeding Heart Show (the highlight of the show), Jackie Dressed In Cobras, These Are The Fables, Sing Me Spanish Techno, Streets of Fire

1 b-side from a request: Graceland.  and 1 impromptu Stevie Nicks cover.

I've listened to the new one about five times now, thanks to modage's nagging encouragement.  The Bleeding Heart Show is their best song, I can say that much.  Haven't gotten a handle on the rest of it yet.  Usually takes about ten listens for that to happen, and twenty for the best stuff to really come to the surface.  I will say that the album starts off great then drifts off to averageness from Falling Through Your Clothes to Star Bodies before it picks up again right at the end.  That may change though.  Prime example, I used to loathe how Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief finished -- now, I love it.

i think there's something wrong if you need to force urself to hear sumthing 20 times before u start liking it.

a good album/song should be evident after 5 listens, MAX. the best stuff is immediately brilliant anyway. and then gets so good by the 5th listen that u can proclaim it the best album ever. all this repeat repeat repeat approach is doing is brainwashing u into tolerating it, and then maybe u think "hey this must be good cos it's all i've been hearing for the last 2 weeks!"

it's like a cult-recruitment strategy.

I disagree. I mean, let's compare it to something familar to this site, film. From my experiences, sometimes it takes more than one viewing to really take in all there is in a film. For instance, if you are not in a good mental state ie tired, high, drunk or something similar, it might throw off your experience of the film. There are movies which I've seen 20 times in which I can discover and enjoy something new that I hadn't noticed before,

With music, it usually takes me a few times to really enjoy an album. In my case, on average I listen to 10-15 new albums a week. I find that I like something now that I might have heard a year ago, that I enjoy now but couldn't get into. An album which is very accessible should be very easy to listen to. But an album or piece of music which creates tension and dischord might take a long time to really get into.

Edit: so this reply is relevant to the thread, I might see The New Pornographers tonight at the trocadero in philly. If so, it will kick ass.

Nah, for me, certain things do click on the first listen, but sometimes the better songs don't make themselves known until the tenth time around.  You're right about five being key, but if I've listened to an album 5 times, I'm going to be listening to it 20 anyway.  And that's just so I can hear all the nuances after I've first gotten the gist of it.

Radiohead is a prime example.  So nuanced that some songs I didn't take to at first have become favorites of mine only after hearing them before or after others on certain albums.  This is because there're just so many subtleties to them.  Amnesiac, again, is a key example.  Its ending, with Dollars and Cents, Hunting Bears, Like Spinning Plates, and Life in a Glass House really annoyed me at first, but I really liked Packt and Knives Out and the others at the beginning.  After hearing their live album, seeing what Like Spinning Plates is really about, I appreciated that recorded version much more, and the others started to stand out more -- especially Hunting Bears which at first I thought was stupid, which is now really kinda brilliant.

New Pornographers Trick Out LP
Source: Pitchfork

If you really want to be ready to step into the ring with the New Pornographers' Challengers on August 21, one CD just won't be enough. Nor two. Three, maybe, but since we're thinking big, why not go four? That's right, Matador is offering a deluxe box set version of Challengers-- what they're calling the "Executive Edition"-- packed to the brim with four discs. It's available right this minute as part of Matador's Buy Early Get Now pre-order campaign.

The first disc is of course the Pornos' fourth LP. The second aims to collect every B-side, demo, and alternate version related to the album, while the third, titled "Live From the Future", will include live Pornos cuts from gigs on their just-announced fall tour. The final disc includes videos, photos (no Neko Case lingerie shots that we know of, sorry), and album artwork.

You might be wondering, hmm... how can they sell me a box set that includes songs that haven't been recorded yet? Well, the answer is... the box set doesn't actually exist in a box. Unless you make it yourself. You see, all of the extra goodies will be downloadable from the Buy Early Get Now site-- it's up to you to burn it to disc. And since it's a bunch of downloads rather than a physical product, Matador can add new stuff to it whenever they want. Magic!

In addition to the box set, "Executive Edition" subscribers also get to stream the whole album RIGHT NOW, mp3s of three exclusive bonus tracks, and early bird access to tour dates and tickets. For five bucks less, you can get the "Standard Edition", which includes everything but the box set.

There are so many Candian bands that you gotta hate one of them. This is the one I hate. I'll DL their new album if I can find it on Oink quick just to up my ratio, but otherwise, I hate this band with a passion. This band and Wolf Parade. Gross. No thanks.

Twin Cinema was my first taste of them and I liked it quite a bit - enough to get AC Newman's solo effort.
I also love the Wolf Parade album. I kinda sluffed them off as another Pitchfork overhyped band, but then came back to the album and now enjoy it quite a bit. Looking forward to their new album this year.

its totally meh.  even the bejar songs are subpar, and those are the usually the only ones worth caring for.  spirit of giving is worth the price of admission though.

Outta nowhere, New Pornographers have a new album, Together.  I learned about it from Amazon, of all places.  Saw it was out just last Tuesday, May 4th, and I ordered it (it was only $7.99, very reasonable).  But... I was disappointed.  Let's just say it's no Challengers.  Or Twin Cinema.  Whereas I thought Challengers was a step up from even Twin Cinema, and one of the best of 2007, this is just average.

A trademark of their music is jarring, go-nowhere pop that never peaks, only plateaus, with a unique pattern that is equally likely to enrapture you as it is to grate on your nerves.  While there are no bad tracks, and the first four are pleasant enough, it takes until number 12, We End Up Together, for anything memorable to occur.  And it is very memorable, one of my faves in their whole catalog.  Silver Jenny Dollar is annoyingly amicable, if such a thing is possible.  Your Hands (Together) and Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk are two of the other standouts.  But 6-11?  Filler.

Bumping 'cause hey, maybe someone else will like it more than I do (not to say I don't, just that I expected more.   On to Wolf Parade's Expo '86 (and an outta-place thanks to the Now Playing thread for the heads-up)!

I actually really liked this record, but now it's starting to feel a little worn. Moves, Crash Years, Silver Jenny Dollar, and Up in the Dark are the stand outs. The others are slowly sounding less and less memorable, but I still really enjoyed it. And yeah, Challengers is still better than this. I think the people who thought it was slow or boring just because it's very different will now realize it was actually a very nice change of pace and a good step for them artistically. Together reminds me a bit more of Mass Romantic in it's sort of likeable mediocrity. But, I have to say, Dan Bejar's songs are actually good for once (I typically can't fucking stand him). It's safe to say any new album will never be no Twin Cinema.

Amazon is using Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk to plug Kindle.  They've arrived.  Or something.  Makes me at least look back at the song and album and reconsider.  We End Up Together is still beautiful.

And, as always...

WE HAVE ARRIVED... TOO LATE TO PLAY THE BLEEDING HEART SHOW!

New album, August 26th.

One song is available for sample at that link, and it is really well done, I think.  Shades of their older stuff, but a good mix feels of all NP eras.  I'm excited, and I like the art.  That's always been the case with them, though.

EDIT:

CD available for pre-order along with other stuff in their store.  Track listing is on that page too.  Anticipation rising.
