Following up on their tremendous Herzog/Kinski Collection, Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced The Werner Herzog Collection. Due on August 3rd, this six-disc set highlights the eclectic career of the German director with the films The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser, Even Dwarfs Started Small, Lessons Of Darkness, Fata Morgana, Heart Of Glass, Little Dieter Needs To Fly and Stroszek. All come with new anamorphic transfers, audio commentary tracks (with Herzog and Norman Hill), production notes, bios and trailers. "Dwarfs" will be available in fullscreen and also includes actor Crispin Hellion Glover in on the commentary. Retail is $89.98.

On August 3rd is Zorba the Greek, starring the father of a thousand children, Anthony Quinn. Presented in remastered 1.33:1 full screen and Dolby 2.0 stereo, extras include audio commentary by director Michael Cacoyannis, the 45-minute Biography special "Anthony Quinn: A Lust for Life," and alternate introduction sequence, two vintage newsreels, a still gallery and theatrical trailers.



Up next on September 7th is Alexander's Ragtime Band, which also gets a newly remastered 1.33:1 full screen transfer and Dolby 2.0 stereo remix, plus. Supplements include a new audio commentary by Ray Faiola, three deleted scenes, the 45-minute Biography special "Alice Faye," a still gallery, a newsreel, and theatrical trailers. Retail will list for $14.95 each.

Davisdvd.com:

MGM Home Entertainment has removed The David Lean Collection from its release schedule indefinitely. The eight-disc set (which included the films In Which We Serve, This Happy Breed, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, The Passionate Friends, and Madeleine) was due on September 7th. No new date has been set.

Warner has at last announced the special edition of The Shawshank Redemption which stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. This hugely popular Frank Darabont directed film will be available in both two-disc special edition and deluxe limited edition sets from the 5th October this year. Retail for the standard special edition will be $26.99, whereas the limited edition will retail for $44.99. Both sets will feature new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfers along with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Track. Extras will include an audio commentary by director Frank Darabont, a Shark Tank Redemption spoof, two in-depth documentaries, photo gallery, storyboards, a 2004 Charlie Rose Show Segment, the films theatrical trailer, and other DVD-ROM features that have yet to be confirmed. In addition to all this, the limited edition will include film historian Mark Kermode's book about the movie's production and huge popularity along with Thomas Newman's soundtrack.
