'Avengers' Star Tom Hiddleston in Early Talks to Lead Relativity's 'The Crow' (Exclusive)

Tom Hiddleston may be flying from super villain to superhero, as "The Avengers" star is in early discussions to play Eric Draven in Relativity Media's reimagining of "The Crow," individuals close to the project have told TheWrap.

Based on the James O'Barr comic book series that was previously adapted as a 1994 Miramax movie starring Brandon Lee, "The Crow" follows a man who returns from beyond the grave to avenge his death.

Ed Pressman of Pressman Film and Kevin Misher of Misher Films are producing with Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh and Jeff Most. Dan Farah of Farah Films will executive produce with Relativity's Tucker Tooley.

Hiddleston recently had dinner with producers and sent them a makeup test that he did on his own in London. He will undergo a proper makeup test in the coming days, as the character's appearance is important to fans of the franchise, who should be delighted with the casting of a major member of the Marvel universe.

Acclaimed Spanish filmmaker F. Javier Gutierrez ("Before the Fall") is directing "The Crow" from a script by Cliff Dorfman ("Warrior"), though it's possible that other writers will be credited as well.

Production is tentatively scheduled to begin this fall, though the timetable could move slightly depending on several factors.

O'Barr wrote "The Crow" to help him deal with the death of his girlfriend, and it's the story's emotional component that sets it apart from other comic book properties. Hiddleston appealed to producers who were enamored with his ability to project both a light and dark side. He has also displayed gifted physical talents as the villainous Loki in "The Avengers," as well as impressive dramatic chops in the acclaimed indie film "The Deep Blue Sea."

In addition to his turns in "Thor," "The Avengers" and upcoming Marvel sequel "Thor: The Dark World," Hiddleston has worked with top directors such as Steven Spielberg on "War Horse," Woody Allen on "Midnight in Paris" and Jim Jarmusch in "Only Lovers Left Alive." He is also attached to play photographer Robert Capa in an upcoming biopic.

Hiddleston is repped by WME, manager Jon Rubinstein, Hamilton Hodell and attorney Jodi Peikoff. Gutierrez, who is managed by Farah, signed with WME's Dan Aloni and Ari Emanuel earlier this week.

The sewers are running white with face paint, as "The Crow" reboot has led a series of actors, from Bradley Cooper to James McAvoy, into discussions of slathering it on for the lead role. "The Avengers" star Tom Hiddleston was the latest name to arise as a possibility, but now it seems another actor's scheduling troubles may have snagged him the role instead.

Hiddleston's involvement with Relativity Media's re-launched franchise -- widely reported as it was -- looks to be nothing more than a brief conversation about the role, according to Deadline. The one to reportedly watch now? "True Blood" and "The East" star Alexander Skarsgard, recently left with a gap in his schedule after David Yates' "Tarzan" reboot, in which he was set to star, fell through over at WB.

Budget troubles were the issue there, but one has to wonder about the costs surrounding the forever-developing "The Crow" -- set to be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez ("Before The Fall") -- and how much longer the project can keep toying with a lead before settling down and getting into production. No official offer has been sent over to the actor yet, but here's hoping he accepts and this thing gets in motion.

'The Crow' Flies With Luke Evans

EXCLUSIVE: The Crow will fly with Welsh actor Luke Evans playing the title role in the F. Javier Gutierrez-directed franchise reboot for Relativity Media. Evans was the original choice, but he has been incredibly busy. He was just cast as the lead in Dracula Year Zero, he is the villain in Fast & Furious 6 and is Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Evans seemed to be unavailable because of production on Dracula and promotion on The Hobbit.

The distributor looked at Tom Hiddleston and more recently Alexander Skarsgard, the latter of whom has a bunch of offers after Warner Bros halted Tarzan. Ultimately, they have decided to push the start date to early next year to accommodate his schedule in order to secure Evans, who is currently promoting the release of Fast 6. So hey junket guys, be sure to ask him about it. They are now in negotiations and I expect the deal to make. He seems an ideal fit for the role originated by Brandon Lee, who died tragically during production on the 1994 Alex Proyas-directed revenge story based on the James O'Barr comic book series. He's repped by WME and United Agents.
