Title: Joaquin Phoenix
Post by: Finn on October 07, 2004, 05:35:55 PM
He's a great actor who's been in a lot of really good movies. I really liked him in Quills, Signs, Ladder 49 and particularly The Village. He'll be playing Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.

I'm bumping this thread because something awesome is happening with Joaquin Phoenix.

Apparently, he's embarking on his new career as a rapper. I think he's just trolling everyone, but people are really taking this shit seriously. It's hilarious. People are like, "OMG, he;s going the same route as his BRO!" and "anuther heath ledger!!!!1!!" and it's funny as shit. As with anything celebrities do, the paparrazi blows it out of proportion and I think Joaquin is trolling them.

Check his interview from Letterman tonight.

Joaquin Phoenix's parting shots
What's the talk about 'Two Lovers'? Mostly that it's Joaquin Phoenix's last film.
By John Horn; Los Angeles Times

"Two Lovers" is the kind of highbrow movie many actors would consider a great showcase: a small, personal film with a demanding central role opposite an Oscar-winning actress. Joaquin Phoenix, the star of the new drama, sees "Two Lovers" in a very different light -- his swan song.

Phoenix's retirement from acting -- which he insists is neither a joke nor a publicity stunt -- has transformed the film's Friday launch into a circus nearly as surreal as anything staged by Fellini or Cirque du Soleil.

"I didn't think it would get this attention," Phoenix says. "I didn't think anybody would care."

The star of "Walk the Line" and "Gladiator" announced last fall that he was quitting acting to pursue a career in music, saying that "Two Lovers" would be his final turn in front of movie cameras. News of the unusual declaration -- Phoenix is just 34 years old and considered one of the top acting talents of his generation -- is threatening to eclipse the film itself, seriously testing the long-standing adage that there's no such thing as bad publicity.

"I have no idea if it helps or hurts," the film's writer-director, James Gray, said at the end of a recent day of publicity for the film, in which Phoenix was trailed by a documentary film crew under the direction of actor (and Phoenix's brother-in-law) Casey Affleck, who is chronicling Phoenix's career transformation. "But my instinct is it's pretty good for the film," Gray says. "It's a small movie, and it wouldn't have gotten a lot of press otherwise."

It's not just Phoenix's retirement (and, more notably, the media's coverage thereof) that is overshadowing the story of "Two Lovers," Gray's examination of the complicated emotional and romantic life of a middle-aged man struggling with mental illness.

At the same time, "Two Lovers" costar Gwyneth Paltrow is attracting a ton of attention too. But it's not for her increasingly rare film work or even her marriage to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Instead, the focus has been on the "Shakespeare in Love" actress' new self-help website ( www.goop.com), and not all of the coverage of her luxurious lifestyle tips has been very kind.

"While it's nice to get the attention and get the film's name out, it's a double-edged sword, because it's not reflective of the film," says Eamonn Bowles, whose Magnolia Pictures is releasing "Two Lovers" in New York and Los Angeles on Friday, while the film already is available through video-on-demand services. "The film is anything but a tabloid diversion. It's a soulful, serious, almost old-school story. And we don't want the tabloid fodder to overwhelm the film."

"Two Lovers," which premiered at last May's Cannes Film Festival, is hardly a lightweight romance: The film opens with Leonard (Phoenix) attempting to commit suicide. Leonard, who has moved back in with his parents following a canceled engagement, is soon entangled in two women's lives.

Michelle (Paltrow) is a Brooklyn neighbor who is having an affair with a married man, while Sandra (Vinessa Shaw) is a family acquaintance who is a healthier choice for the emotionally unstable Leonard.

Gray says that he wrote his script with Phoenix (who was in Gray's "The Yards" and "We Own the Night") and Paltrow in mind, and was inspired by the Dostoevsky short story "White Nights," which has been turned into half a dozen other movies.

"I think he's fantastic in the movie," Gray says of Phoenix. "If it's his last movie, I think it would be really sad. He's a wonderfully talented guy, and he has a lot to give the world. But he said over and over again, 'I don't like doing this anymore. I'm tired.' He looked exhausted at the end of the movie. At the end of the process, I saw him quite beaten. I have never met anyone as serious as an artist as him, and he doesn't care what anyone thinks."

That includes the actor's appraisal of his own work. Asked if Phoenix thinks that "Two Lovers" would be a fitting final chapter for this cinematic career, he shrugs, saying that he hasn't watched it. "I don't see the movies I do," Phoenix says. "Why would I?"

Looking more like a hard-living rock star than a matinee idol, Phoenix conducted his interview with matted, disheveled hair, an unruly beard, tattered clothes and dark sunglasses. While some have dismissed his retirement as an Andy Kaufman-style prank, commenting endlessly about his legendary Las Vegas performance, where he lost his balance and toppled off the stage, Phoenix says his switch from multiplex to recording studio is dead serious, a path he began steering toward years ago. Indeed, Phoenix sang all of Johnny Cash's songs in "Walk the Line," for which he was nominated for an Academy Award.

"It's something that I have been doing for a while," Phoenix says, lighting up a cigarette and sipping a Snapple. "I don't want to film right now. . . . It's not satisfying."

Phoenix says he is in a recording studio every day, working to finish an album that he hopes will be completed in a few months. He says the music is hard to categorize and that, while it will include raps, the mix will be eclectic and unpredictable. "I want to do wild, out-there" stuff, he says.

Which also describes how the "Two Lovers" press day unfolded. Journalists interviewing Phoenix were asked if Affleck could film the sessions as part of his documentary, which made the proceedings feel more like "This Is Spinal Tap" performance art than a publicity tour, especially when Phoenix reenacted his Las Vegas stage stumble.

"It really started out innocently," Phoenix says of having Affleck shadow him. "I was in the studio, recording, and I wanted a document of that experience. I wish there was footage of Public Enemy making 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back,' " he says of the seminal 1988 hip-hop album.

Phoenix says that as a young actor he would walk by movie sets, smell the acrid scent of colored gels smoking in front of hot stage lights and become intoxicated. "I want to get in there, I want to get in there," he says of how was drawn to acting. "But I haven't had that feeling in a while . . . and my mom always told me, 'Be true to your heart.' "

He says that while he has no idea whether he can succeed as well in music as he has in movies, he needs to do what he finds fulfilling. When it comes to acting, he says, "there are too many other elements that are a part of moviemaking that I just find unbearable." Phoenix doesn't spell them all out, but it's clear it became more of a job and less of a "mystifying" creative endeavor.

"I was excited by it," he says of performing in front of a camera. "And then it starts to become this thing."

What's also clearly changed is that the kind of movies Phoenix has been drawn to are not always films audiences care for. Although 2005's "Walk the Line" grossed more than $180 million worldwide, Phoenix's more recent movies have been far less popular, with 2007's "Reservation Road" barely grossing $100,000 domestically. "I just think audiences have become more selective," he says.

That is likely to be the case with "Two Lovers," and Phoenix knows it. As the actor was winding up his unusual day of interviews, he picked up a mounted copy of the film's poster only to discover that another poster was glued to the back, from November's hit " Four Christmases."

"This is how you make money," Phoenix says, looking at the "Four Christmases" poster before turning it around. "And this is how you don't."

Abso-fucking-lutely. I don't think Phoenix has ever been so exciting.

I think I was just trying to say that I'm pretty certain his actions have been very deliberate and not the stumbling of some narcotic fueled nutcase. Not that you were saying he's a narcotic fueled nutcase - so I guess I was just being redundant.

I mean, maybe he is a narcotic fueled nutcase - but even so, I don't doubt for a second that the dude is in total control of whatever it is.

Big ups to JP.

Joaquin Phoenix rap show ends with confrontation
Source: AP

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Joaquin Phoenix appears to be getting into the act of being a petulant hip-hop star.

He jumped off the stage during a short performance at a Miami Beach nightclub early Thursday morning and confronted an audience member who was heckling him. Security guards dragged him back on stage and escorted him away.

It's unknown whether the confrontation — and his pledge to quit acting and start rapping — was real or a put-on, but actor Casey Affleck recorded the performance on camera.

In October, Phoenix's publicist confirmed he was making the career switch. In January he performed at a Las Vegas nightclub and the next month he made a strange appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show." Actor Ben Stiller lampooned that appearance at the Oscars.

Hundreds of people packed the nightclub at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel after the doors opened at 10 p.m. Wednesday night.

Several of those in the audience said they came just to see Phoenix, who left them cooling their heels for almost four hours while disc jockeys played house and hip-hop music.

Phoenix came out on stage before 2 a.m., smoking a cigarette and wearing a disheveled dark suit, sneakers and his scraggly long hair and beard.

He began rapping to a beat played by the DJ and nodding to the music, although most of the lyrics were unintelligible. Then he responded to someone who appeared to be heckling him in the audience near the stage.

"We have a (double-expletive) in the audience," he said before jumping into the crowd. It was not immediately clear whether the two men exchanged any blows.

"I saw the guy screaming at Joaquin, and Joaquin just came down," said Jorge Lledo, 30, of Miami Beach.

Security guards swarmed the scene and dragged Phoenix away.

The bizarre spectacle struck many in the audience as the latest prank in an extended farce staged by Phoenix. Affleck, an Oscar-nominated actor who is also Phoenix's brother-in-law, is making a documentary about Phoenix's career shift.

"(Affleck's) camera was filming the whole time, so it makes me think he has ulterior motives," said Luis Gendron, 23, of Miami .

"He knows the game he's playing, and he's good at it," Gendron said of Phoenix.

Buyers See Joaquin Phoenix Mockumentary
By MIKE FLEMING; Deadline Hollywood

EXCLUSIVE: Casey Affleck has completed that much-talked about and long-awaited mockumentary he directed about his brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix's eccentric metamorphosis from actor to hip-hop musician (or so we've been led to believe). I'm told that the film made its debut in a private lunchtime screening at WME headquarters last week for buyers -- including Harvey Weinstein -- who were sworn to secrecy. WME is selling the film, and it may only take a couple of days to reach a deal. I hear the agency and the distributors intend to keep the mock's content under wraps for as long as they can for maximum shock value. (So it won't be part WME Global's sales push at the Cannes Film Festival.) Presumably, the film answers Hollywood's bewilderment about whether Joachin was serious about quitting acting -- or whether he was just, well, acting. His long months of bizarre behavior culminated in his semi-mute interview with David Letterman that was as surreal as anything Andy Kaufman ever did. And, his musical debut at the Las Vegas night club LAVO where he claimed to be a homeless rapper, jumped around the stage, and fell off.

What, he rules. He definitely brings his personality to the table when he's cast in his kind of role. Buffalo Soldiers is pretty underrated. And if James Gray can get his head out of his ass and stop writing his own scripts (though he got better with Two Lovers, but still that was the weak part of the film) these two could make a masterpiece.

Source: ThePlaylist

After a recent market screening of Joaquin Phoenix 's documented attempts at a rapping career last year, potential buyers who saw the film have reportedly expressed confusion at its lead's authenticity with many walking out "more mystified by Phoenix's behavior than when they walked in."

Directed by Phoenix's brother-in-law Casey Affleck, the documentary titled "I'm Still Here: The Lost Year Of Joaquin Phoenix" apparently provides no set up for the odd behaviors of its lead last year instead blurring the lines between documentary and mockumentary and leaving audiences in a state of genuine confusion on whether Phoenix was truly was going for a career change or whether it was all for show.

The film does document failed attempts to woo Sean "Diddy" Combs as a producer on a potential rap album but, along with that, also come with Phoenix uncharacteristically "snorting cocaine, ordering call girls, having oral sex with a publicist, treating his assistants abusively and rapping badly." Other notable scenes include what is being described as "more male frontal nudity than you'd find in some gay porn films and a stomach-turning sequence in which someone feuding with Phoenix defecates on the actor while he's asleep."

Now come on, if there was ever any doubt, that description surely answers questions about how genuine Phoenix was about being a rapper. Would an acclaimed, Oscar-winning thespian really give up his flourishing career for all this "Jackass"-style "Hollywood debauchery" and what is evidently "very little talent for [rap] music"? Surely, this can all be explained by Phoenix's devotion to method acting...

Confusion aside, buyers were apparently fascinated by the documentary, agreeing that "they'd never seen anything like it" while debating its commercial prospects. It is really a debate or are studios just holding their cards close to their chest? Phoenix's red carpet antics and his appearance on David Letterman's 'Late Show' last year sparked a flurry of interest — the official Youtube video is clicking close to four and a half million views — with the whole stunt pretty much making for a greater marketing campaign than money could buy.

Phoenix's dedication alone should be an attraction for viewers with the role not only consuming the actor's life but also sidelining his career. One sequence in the film apparently shows Ben Stiller approaching Phoenix about starring in Noah Baumbach's "Greenberg" to which Phoenix's rapper incarnation was obviously not interested in. We assume Stiller was offering the part eventually played by Rhys Ifans.

It remains to be seen then if and when Phoenix will come out of his acting "hiatus." The actor has already broken out of his rapper persona and was even briefly linked to play Edgar Allen Poe in Daniel Stashower's "The Beautiful Cigar Girl" before that eventually fell through. Surely, he's not that method to keep it up until the release of 'I'm Still Here'?

Joaquin Phoenix documentary: Even buyers aren't sure if it's a prank
Source: Los Angeles Times

It's far from the Joaquin Phoenix you're used to seeing onscreen: snorting cocaine, ordering call girls, having oral sex with a publicist, treating his assistants abusively and rapping badly. And not, apparently, playing a role — or was he?

Even after seeing the documentary "I'm Still Here: The Lost Year of Joaquin Phoenix" in a private screening earlier this week, film buyers still aren't sure of its genuineness. Was the "Walk the Line" and "Gladiator" star, who said more than a year ago that he was quitting acting to become a musician, playing a sophisticated prank, or did he really ditch his Oscar-nominated career to become a disheveled rapper?

Agents at William Morris Endeavor, the sellers of the Casey Affleck-directed film, have started showing the movie to potential distributors, and while some were apparently interested in bidding for "I'm Still Here's" distribution rights, the shoppers left the screening perhaps even more mystified by Phoenix's behavior than when they walked in.

Several buyers said the film overflowed with Hollywood debauchery, including more male frontal nudity than you'd find in some gay porn films and a stomach-turning sequence in which someone feuding with Phoenix defecates on the actor while he's asleep.

The documentary — or is it a mockumentary? — also includes Phoenix's infamous appearance on "The Late Show With David Letterman," in which the bearded and bloated actor barely spoke, leaving Letterman bewildered if not infuriated and people wondering about Phoenix's mental health.

The buyers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Phoenix comes off unsympathetically and shows very little talent for music in the movie, directed by his brother-in-law (Affleck is married to Summer Phoenix). Sales agent WME declined to comment.

In some scenes in the film, the 35-year-old Phoenix is trying to get Sean "Diddy" Combs to produce Phoenix's rap album, but the hip-hop impresario is not terribly interested. Another sequence shows Ben Stiller approaching Phoenix about starring in writer-director Noah Baumbach's "Greenberg," but Phoenix is barely interested.

Two buyers who saw the movie were unsure if Phoenix had turned out an elaborate piece of performance art, where the joke was really on the audience. While they were debating the film's commercial prospects, the buyers did agree on one thing: They'd never seen anything like it.

When Herzog Rescued Phoenix (http://www.collider.com/2010/09/15/werner-herzog-joaquin-phoenix-animated-short/#more-49214)

During the social media Q&A for his film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?, director Werner Herzog fielded a question from fellow director David Lynch. Lynch asked Herzog via Twitter to tell the story about the time he saved the life of actor Joaquin Phoenix near the director's home. First Look Studios, who hosted the event, was later approached by animator Sascha Ciezata about producing an animated short  using audio from the interview. When Herzog Rescued Phoenix was posted to Youtube this past Monday, September 13th. The short relates in cutesy style what surely must have been a harrowing experience for everyone involved, a feeling that is reinforced by Herzog's matter-of-fact voiceover. I do wonder if it was really a Prius that Joaquin creamed with his Camaro, though. Hit the jump to see the clip, as well as the original Herzog interview.

If this makes anyone feel better, it doesn't even sound like a superhero movie:

"According to Marvel Comics mythology, former neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange is one of the most powerful sorcerers in existence. He draws his abilities from the invocation of powerful mystic objects, the manipulation of the universe's ambient magical energy and his own psychic resources. Strange's magical repertoire includes energy projection and manipulation, matter transformation, animation of inanimate objects, teleportation, illusion-casting, mesmerism, thought projection, astral projection, dimensional travel, time travel and mental possession; though the full range of his abilities is unknown. The character has graced comic book pages for over 50 years, was featured in a direct-to-video animated film and has appeared across several Marvel cartoon series."

Joaquin Phoenix won't be playing Marvel's 'Doctor Strange'
by EW

Well, it was strange while it lasted. But those hoping to see Joaquin Phoenix channel his searing screen intensity into waves of psychedelic magic in Marvel Studios' upcoming Doctor Strange movie can hang their heads in disappointment.

The Oscar-nominated actor and the movie multi-verse pioneers have failed to come to an agreement, and now director Scott Derrickson and Co. are looking for a new actor to fill the good doctor's high-collared cape.

Phoenix, who reunited with The Master director Paul Thomas Anderson in the upcoming noir-satire Inherent Vice, had been Marvel's first choice for the part, but three months of negotiations with William Morris Endeavor have ended with neither side willing to commit, sources close to the talks tell EW.

Although there are rumors Ethan Hawke, who previously worked with Derrickson on the horror flick Sinister, may be a candidate for the role, that is nowhere near a done deal, sources say.

It was a gamble to reach for an actor like Phoenix, who tends to avoid big-budget blockbusters in favor of offbeat and intimate stories such as Her and the self-mocking mockumentary I'm Still Here. Joining up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe often means agreeing to appear in other titles, such as the Avengers series, which is a lot of commitment without much control.

Face front, true believers! This will be a mere bump in Doctor Strange's journey to the screen. While other directors, such as Guillermo del Toro and Wes Craven, have seen projects collapse, Marvel Studios is devoted to making a cinematic version of artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee's 1963 comic book creation.

As Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told EW last year: "I would love Strange to be a part of [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] only because he's a great character. He's a great standalone character," Feige emphasizes. "He's got a great origin story, for the most part. And that world of pure magic, we haven't done yet. There's a whole supernatural/magic alternate dimension going on in the Marvel comics that we haven't ever touched on."
