Title: Are we nerds?
Post by: Sigur Rós on May 12, 2003, 03:06:46 PM
I'm looking back on nearly 500 posts, and asking myself "Am I a nerd?"

Are we, the members of xixax.com, nerds?
:?

If you aren't then prove it.....

Absolutely, totally. You know how excited I got when we did our "movies you wanna see on Criterion" posts? That's gotta be a nerd alert.

Of course, before that, I watched "George Washington" with her and tried to explain to her why it was brilliant, so I'm straddling the fence just a little bit.

I think "cinephile" or "passionate" or "devoted" or even "obsessive" are much prettier words than "nerd," but when it comes right down to it...

I don't know... some people give me a rather awkward look when I tell them that I watched a 4-hour-documentary (Chung Kuo, an very interesting movie) or even Sancho Dayu by Mizoguchi. ("A japanese film? With subtitles and so on?").
What shall I say?  I couldn't live without movies. Does that make me a nerd? I don't think so. Perhaps it depends on the perspective.

I prefer the term 'socially challenged' to 'nerd'.

For your accurate definition enjoyment:

nerd also nurd
n. Slang
1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

Hmmm, let's see:

Alright, Nerd test passed. Next up:

geek

2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.
3. A carnival performer whose show consists of bizarre acts, such as biting the head off a live chicken.

Nerd definition #2 = Me. Exactly. Hmmm.
Title: Are we nerds?
Post by: godardian on May 12, 2003, 03:56:45 PM
I think people generally mean the single-mindedness and forget (or, more likely, don't know) the rest of the actual definition. I think single-minded pursuit is pretty admirable, but I people who actually use words like "nerd" or "geek" as an insult are frightened by anyone paying too much attention to/thinking too much about, well, anything, really. It only serves to show up the fact that they're complacent conformists who wouldn't go out on a limb and risk being called a name for something they really cared about.

I remember when I was entering High School, I was very alert to the qualifications of what made a nerd or jock or prep or what. See, I grew up as a jock my entire life and was pretty good in a lot of sports but then blew it all off in high school. In high school, everything was dominated by the social consequences of the actions. In college though, everything seems to have faded for the most part and I am comfortable so in answering this question, now I feel like I am myself instead of a nerd or whatever label. Everyone has some weird passion.

i prefer "film-geek." nerd to me is more a geek who is into science and gadgets, and likes school.

nerd: peter parker
geek: quentin tarantino

there are all kinds of geeks: comic book, movies, dungeons and dragons.... (somehow "music geek" doesnt work. i guess music is considered "cool")

I prefer "film-geek," also. That's the term I most often use to describe my own cinephilia.

I loved that Yo La Tengo article! I was hoping that would be the link that was being posted when I clicked on it...! I am both a music geek and a film geek, I'm afraid...

I saw Yo La Tengo on Wednesday: it was absolutely wonderful. Thankfully no natural disaster prevented me from hearing any of their postmodern, ironic love ballads...

I don't like the term 'nerd' either - as Cecil so deftly pointed out in his comparison... I would proudly admit to full-on geekdom however...

Yeah, I like Yo La Tengo, also. I've seen them live only once, though, I believe on tour for I Can Hear the Heart.... They're sweet (not in the "sweet, dude!" sense, but in the "aww... that's sweet" sense).

nerd or geek, it doesn't matter.. to be part of an internet community qualifies anyone as a bona fide loser.

I'm gonna see Yo La Tengo live at Roskilde 2003. I can't wait....I'm a geek....

Ummm...... I am the biggest nerd in the world. I love it, it's my passion. The ID name explains it all. I could talk all day about film. Uhhh. I'm a nerd. I get so happy whenever film is mentioned. Uhh I love it. It's awesome!!!

thefilmfreak is right.

I think we all need to watch "revenge of the nerds" to confirm that our nerdiosity isn't something to be ashamed of.

If you aren't ashamed to have Urkel as your avatar, I say skip the movie. You're confirmed.

Yeah, I'm going to say the same as cecil. I'm not smart enough to be a conventional nerd with the science and all that, I'm definitely a film nerd/geek. Film is the only thing I get REALLY geeky about...with all my other interests, I'm just passionate.

I'm not unsociable either, I'm just shy.

I will make a public confession.

Last weekend, I watched Jay and Silent Bob.

...And I actually liked it...

One thing that occurred to me as they surfed Movie Poop Shoot Dot Com was that I have created a poop shoot of my own.

And pretty soon, A heroin addict and a rotund PTA hater are going to show up at our door and kick our asses.

I hate to admit it after all the shit that went down with Kevin Smith and PTA, but there is an awful lot of truth in Jay and Silent Bob. Painful truth.

Recommended viewing for all Xixaxies.

nothing to be ashamed of, i love J&SBSB. And I'm also a computer messageboard nerd. See, you can tell who's a computer message board nerd if Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is J&SBSB, or if Punch Drunk Love is PDL or things like such.

Well, although the stereotype affiliated with nerds is usually science and stuff, I think I'm a nerd. Everytime I talk to someone about films or digital technology or something, I see the awkwardness rise as they desperately try to end the conversation. I'm having a hell of a time talking, but all they want to do is get away from me. I think that definetely qualifies me as a nerd. Plus I have absolutely no social life to speak of, so...
Although, I think I agree with Cecil about the nerd/geek difference. I think I'm more of a geek. But that can be cool, right?

Ugh. I hate Jay and Silent Bob the very most out of all of Kevin Smith's films. It makes Chasing Amy look like Bergman. It just epitomizes everything I can't stand about him. Smugness disguised as self-deprecation, and a level of disingenuousness and cynical pseudo-populism that would make Eddie Vedder himself blush. Any South Park episode does what Smith tries to do in that film with 10 times the laughs and more succinctly, too.

Everyone should see it to form their own opinion, but please- I'm asking you, lord- let them not see "painful truth" in it?

It just made me want to scurry home and watch Bigger, Longer, and Uncut again, just to remind myself I did have a sense of humor and my reasons for hating Jay weren't because of the "what" (the jokes, the content) but "the how" (the smugness, the sloppiness and, for a comedy, the rather grim and lifeless tone).
