Hey duders/Tyler,

We're looking to resurrect the PTA's DVD Picks section of the site (along with all the other long dormant sections) so what I'm looking to do is spruce up his incredibly mid-2000's picks (Mystic River, LOTR, Lost In Translation, Kill Bill, etc. etc.) with some more far reaching picks.

So, what I need from anyone who has time is to find me any interview where PTA mentions a film as an influence or just something he dug.

Don't really want to get into 'we think this is inspired by this' kinda just want to stick to things the man has recommended/admitted to liking. I think our blind spot is from TWBB on but it's possible some archival stuff has slipped through the cracks.

Here's what we've got so far...

Thanks for any help!

he once mentioned back when capote was nominated that he voted for it for best pic. unfortunately I cant remember where I read that.

what I do remember is that he finished saying he voted for it because of the ppl involved with it, and that he hadnt seen at that time crash  :yabbse-smiley:

I may be mistaken, but didn't he send a Christmas e-mail to C&RV or even ptanderson.com years ago where he talked about enjoying Little Miss Sunshine and a western Christmas movie (3 Godfathers maybe)?

ElPandaRoyal

Doesn't he mention on the Boogie Nights commentary that he's a fan of Zelig and Spinal Tap, when talking about faux-documentaries?

He said this at the UC Berkeley Q&A, just a few days after the Oscars when Crash won Best Picture. He said it with an embarrassed look on his face because he was supposed to have seen all the nominees before voting for Best Picture.

But to be honest, I couldn't say for sure whether he voted for Capote because it was a movie that he particularly loved, or because he had to choose between those nominees and went with his buddy's movie.

you might want to put the VHS tape of JAWS on there as well.

Well, I'm gonna have to go and do my homework on this now (seeing as you called me out my name  :yabbse-smiley:).

But what I remember from his DVD commentary tracks is he mentioning:

Sydney commentary:

Mellville's "Bob the Gambler" and Demme's "Melvin and Howard"

He mentions Truffaut but he doesn't mention an specific movie of his.

From the boogie nights commentary, he mentions "I am cuba" and "Putney Swope", also "Raging Bull". I believe he also mentions that Scorsese was inspired by Elia Kazan, but again, no specific movies mentioned (Though if you watch ON THE WATERFRONT and EAST OF EDEN, the influence is rather obvious, but that’s besides the point).

In that Magnolia documentary, he projected Lumet’s “NETWORK” and Redford’s “ORDINARY PEOPLE” for the crew.

I remember reading an article where PTA and Scorsese were talking (after PTA had shown TWBB to Scorsese) and Marty told Paul that he (Paraphrasing) “Saw a little bit of “GIANT” and “DAYS OF HEAVEN” in the film”  and PTA agreed
.
I also remember from an article he did around the time of Boogie Nights, where he mentioned 10 movies that inspired him...

1. Putney swope
2. Nashville
3. Goodfellas
4. singing in the rain
5. shoot the piano player
6. The Jade pussycat (BEWARE: this one is a legit porno movie. Might want to skip this one)
7. I am cuba
8. Melvin and howard
9. Stray dog
10. Bad day at black rock

And that’s really all I got from memory. I'll come back later  and add more to it after I do a little digging...

EDIT: Here’s the article:  http://mubi.com/lists/paul-thomas-andersons-top-10 (There was a more detailed version with PTA actually commenting a bit about these movies, but I can't seem to find it).

is there no record of PTA mentioning casino?? I mean boogie nights, as I think tyler pointed out a few weeks ago, has A LOT of stuff that seems directly taken from it. more than good fellas.

polkablues

I recall him mentioning somewhere his love of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" in addition to his directly referencing it in the "Try" video.

Yeah, for BOOGIE NIGHTS and MAGNOLIA he borrowed A LOT of stuff from CASINO (Scorsese goes absolutely nuts stylistically and it is beautiful) but even with all the similarities I don't ever recall him mentioning it or someone mention it TO HIM in like an interview or something. I guess people are too stuck up on Goodfellas and don't appreciate THE MASTERPIECE that is CASINO.

But I do remember reading something where Paul said he loved "The age of innocence" and it was actually one of his favorite Scorsese movies. (I could point out that the digital flower opening in Magnolia is borrowed from the opening of The Age of Innocence... But I rather not do that  :yabbse-grin:)

He has also mentioned his love for Sofia Coppola's "Lost in Translation", even saying that it reminded him of why he loved movies so much.

I also remember reading an article where he talked about his love for french movies and how inspired he was by the works of Ophuls and Clouzot, etc. (Here’s the article:  http://cigsandredvines.blogspot.com/1997/04/interview-french-premiere-magazine.html#more). Sadly, he doesn't mention any specific movies.

I don’t know if this has been posted before but I also found this very interesting Website that analyzes and breaks down Punch –Drunk Love’s story and also points out many references and Homages:

I will keep digging because I know there’s a lot more….

That's not what modage is after, you're talking about homages again. And "remembering" something is not a good enough source, you need to find where he said it.

To start with you need to read every interview he did around the time of cmbb and note every movie he mentions favourably.

It has to come straight from PTA's mouth, not someone else's ass.

Yes, like this:

In addition to LiT & Mystic River, already mentioned, it's Noi Albinoi.  I think a lot of people are missing the point of this thread.  Like P said, it's movies PTA actually made a point of saying "hey, you should watch this," and not "oh yeah, that scene from that movie was kinda cool" or "yeah, that might have influenced me."
