Mira Nair to remake Munnabhai!

Sometimes, vanity can have strange consequences.

If you were an internationally acclaimed Indian director working with lavish budgets on Hollywood costume dramas after wowing festival crowds with a gritty take on the darker side of a Delhi wedding, complete with a marigold-chomping central character, what would you imagine your next project to be?

Adapting an Indian Pulitzer Prize winner's novel? Perhaps. Or even be in consideration for the next Harry Potter film.

What Mira Nair would not have expected is that her new 20th Century Fox venture would see her crafting a remake. Especially the remake of a big-budget, masala, song-and-dance Bollywood comedy.

Yes, Variety magazine has announced that Nair will be directing Gangsta MD, the Hollywood adaptation of Raju Hirani's mega hit -- Munnabhai MBBS.

In a first for Bollywood, Fox bought the script rights for the Hindi film earlier this year, and Chris Rock's name has been mentioned several times during initial speculations.

Now, it has been confirmed that Mira Nair will direct the venture, and it is to be re-adapted by screenwriter Jason Filardi, who last worked on the Steve Martin film, Bringing Down The House.

Gangsta MD is expected to hit movie halls in early 2005.

Mira Nair's most recent venture, Vanity Fair, opens in India on December 3.

Munnabhai MBBS Plot Synopsis (from official site)

Munnabhai is a happy man. He lives with his gang in the bylanes of a 'dhobi ghat' in Mumbai; takes pride in being a 'social worker' (they actually settle 'financial disputes' through 'dadagiri'); and enjoys his booze, babes, brawls followed by a good night's sleep. Not much bothers Munna.

Except his parents' annual visit from the village. Munna's father, Hari Prasad Sharma, an upright, moralistic man believes that his son is actually a doctor running a charity hospital. Every year, when his parents arrive, Munna and his gang bathe, shave, don white coats and stethoscopes and pretend to be diligent doctors.

This year, however, the clever charade falls apart. Hari Prasad Sharma's runs into an old friend, Dr. Asthana, who has a daughter called Suman. The two decide that their children, both doctors, would make a perfect match. Munna tries hard to save the situation, but his father discovers the truth. And all hell breaks loose.

Hari Prasad Sharma, now broken by the truth, removes his white spotless 'pagadi' and cries. Munnabhai then takes a decision that would change many lives : he decides to become a doctor.

Munnabhai MBBS is a hilarious and heart warming story of a local goon's journey into the medical world - a place he neither belongs to nor believes in. It is a classic story of a right man in a wrong place.

Patch Adams-y, but somewhat enjoyable.
